Athens Cafe in other cities:
Chicken fried Steak sandwich???? No..big, but not a real steak, but hamburger meat chicken fried! Chef should research how real cfs is made and do it right or change to hamburger steak chicken fried. Go try it at Cotton Patch Cafe.Other things were okay. Waitress was busy, but always bringing by drinks. This was at 3pm...still pretty busy. Lunch is served until 3pm...afterwards another couple of bucks.
The waitress took my drink order as I sat down at table, told her I was having buffet. Finished my drink have way through my meal and finally was able to flag her dow to get another drink as I went to get a lil fruit she brings me a water, as there was a water sitting on the table and I was having orange juice for my drink. Waved down some other waitress and she brings me a juice when I I was finished and ready to leave. The charge for that was $17.37 for one person. Don’t think that’s very friendly and cost efficient for customers.
I have been coming to the Athens Café for about 20 years. Pretty much everything you expect in a small town cafe/diner. They have traditional American breakfasts and a smattering of Mexican breakfast options. Friendly staff that is sometimes more attentive than others. Plate lunch specials daily and desserts. Simple decor but what you come here for is good food, hot coffee and to see how many folks you know and speak to on any given day. I’m here at least a couple of times a week.
I visited this place for breakfast with a group of friends. It was our first time in Athens and honestly this place has us wanting to go back. The breakfast buffet is so convenient and affordable. The food was delicious. The omelet station was a pretty cool touch and the cook made the omelets delicious! Would definitely visit again on our next visit to Athens.
Took me a minute to find them (behind the Lil Cesars 😏, but well worth the hunt. Great food, friendly attentive waitresses, and reasonable prices. Oh, and dont forget those fabulous Belgian Waffles! We went by for breakfast but since they are open until 9PM, we will be back to try lunch and supper.
We arrived at 0930 on a Saturday and were seated immediately. They serve Pepsi products and I was able to get my Mountain Dew! My wife had coffee. She said it was very good coffee. They do have a breakfast buffet but we chose to order from the menu. The service was prompt, courteous and efficient. The food was delicious! One of the best kept secrets in Athens! I will be back!
I rarely turn in a review for a place of business and have never given a poor review. This place prompted my first ever bad review. It was my first visit. The staff were plenty. The place was not real busy for the amount of staff on duty but had to wait to be seated. Wait for a menu. Wait for coffee. Ask to get more coffee. Food was over done and extremely greasy. The staff was my biggest issue. None of them looked like they wanted to be there. No smiles. No welcome, and no thank you while paying for breakfast. I wont go back!
Family owned and operated caters to good sized portions of delicious meals. Good atmosphere, clean, tasty and well seasoned foods; provides a great place for breakfast or dinners. Chicken fried steaks, omlets, nachos, enchaladas all prepared so well. Some take home provisions for later if not all consumed. Very good smiles and service!!!! Must visit often with fruends, guests, business or family, all will enjoy.
The cooks here really know what they are doing! Daily lunch specials are a great deal. Fried catfish, hamburger steak, chicken fried steak all wonderful! Tostada salad, actually three tostadas, is teriffic! Mexican menu excellent! Plus, they are open most nights till 9:00 pm. Why cook when you can get great meals to go?! 5 stars.
Went in with a friend that was going to have lunch I did not go there to eat I was there to visit with my friend I ordered a glass of tea they brought chips and salsa to the table as they do at most Mexican food restaurants then after my friend was through with his meal they came to the table and said they were going to charge for the chips and salsa because I did not order and I ate some I will never go back to that place and I recommend anyone that goes there be very cautious
Antonio made me huevos rancheros today. He takes his responsibility of restauntuer seriously. Hes humble, hardworking and there all the time. You can tell a lot about a man from the way his children and employees comport themselves. His children and employees are educated, professional, responsive and respectful. The food is great! Try Saturday or Sunday buffet with Antonio cooking eggs any style at the omeltte bar. Great institution - Athens Cafe.

2022-04-16We had the breakfast buffet. Most food was okay- some sub par. The omelets were excellent. The guy that makes them does a great job. Restaurant has a slight smell to it- not sure what it is. Bathrooms were clean. If you don’t like your waitress to come around much this is the place. We could not even get one to come over when we waved her down and made eye contact. We won’t be back.

2022-07-07We had breakfast, my husband and kids got the buffet while I ordered an omelet. Loved it! Delicious food and very friendly staff. We went on a Saturday morning around 8:30-9ish and had no waiting time, it was great.

2022-04-12Very good food! Attentive staff. We went for the southern comfort food on menu but guessed the mexican food would have also been good based on the chips and salsa that came as a free appetizer.

2020-09-17We stopped in for a evening meal and the food was horrible. I ordered shrimp and okra and it was burnt. No seasoning on the fries or the table and the cocktail sauce looked and tasted expired. My daughter had a enchilada and the beef didnt even reasonable beef it appeared to be old leftover meat. Not sure what happened the cafe use to be a good place to eat. There was only one other couple in the place eating. I do not recommend eating dinner there.

2020-10-26Wow, amazing Spanish breakfast in a little roadside Cafe in Athens, TX. This is so much food for about $8--! And SO good. The service is friendly and prompt without being invasive. The perfect balance. 😊When they ask if youd like more creamer, they dont skimp!

2019-04-28We traveled to Athens for the TVCC Cardettes show. Found the cafe online with great reviews and decided to give it a try. Food was absolutely amazing. Best biscuits and gravy I have had in a long time. The pancakes were super fluffy and very tasteful. Great communication with the staff.
