Fantastic facility, extremely helpful adoption process, and behavior consulting to make your adoption a success. We went through the process to adopt our second dog and they helped guide the introduction, and follow-up through the process. Any questions we have had have been promptly answered through email or calls. Cannot recommend them enough!
I was dropping two dogs off as part of my job and was only in the overnight/after hours holding kennel. However, if that space is any judge I would say the Austin Animal Shelter is a great facility. The kennels, and the space as a whole, were well maintained. Bowls for food and water were readily available for the dogs. The space was not over crowded and the dogs had reasonable space in the individual kennels to move about somewhat. I was able to put both dogs in a single kennel with plenty of room, which made my job easier and they were much happier due to them seeming to be very much pair-bonded.
The wonderful people who work at Austin Animal Center are truly angels. I recently adopted a brother and sister pair that I was led to, lucky for me. Dont buy a pet, adopt, and visit these great folks before you do.Edit: So here we are, a year later from adoption day, and I couldnt be happier. Best dogs ever, so terrifically loving. Sure, its not all been sunshine and roses, but it mostly has been. Loves of my life, my reason for being, they are.
Nothing has given me as much joy as canceling all of the applications I have placed with AAC that have been labeled Pending since November 14th- or longer! I gave up on adopting from a pound and went looking for a small breed puppy to buy. Found a nice baby mutt for $75. They really need to fix their confusing application software and get the fosters or workers to update the outstanding applications. Even a cancelation would be nice- I understand tons of people are probably applying for the many litters of lab, chihuahua, and rat terrier pups that I have seen come in over the past months. Declined would even be fine. Pending just hurts.
My husband and I got our dog Bonnie there as our wedding gift to ourselves/Christmas gift. The only negative is that it is understaffed and you have to hunt people down. But everything is clean, well organized, loving, and efficient. We will be going back when we want to add to our little family.
I had no idea what to expect on my first visit, and admittedly I was a bit wary that I would be seeing a bunch of sad animals in sad kennels. But this was not the case at all! The center was very welcoming, and it had a very good feel to it. I was very pleasantly surprised that I was able to just freely walk through various dog houses and see all of the canines, even though some were barkers which made it harder to connect with those that were quiet and observant. Overall, though, it was a good experience, and my kudos to Austin Animal Center for doing such a good job caring for so so many!
This shelter was extremely nice, and the employees were also very caring/knowledgeable! The only reason for the 4 stars and not 5 is because they wont test their dogs with cats. Almost every shelter we went to on the East Coast when we lived there highly encouraged it. About half of them here in Texas will walk the dog through the cat room to see if they react or not. But unfortunately because they would not offer that here we werent able to adopt. We dont feel it is fair to adopt a dog and it not be good with our cat and have to take it back.So this shelter is good if you dont have a current pet in my opinion.
The staff is awesome I found two wonderful little sisters that are now part of my family and they are happy since the people who had adopted them first brought them back in less than a week they now have a forever home and were all happy the black one is named Hecate and the tortoise shell I named Sparkle because she just shines and neither one cannot stop licking me Sparkle more I dont know if they are grateful, thirsty, or just tasting me in case I suddenly died and can no longer operate a can opener LOL and they love their brother another rescue whos the green anole name 🐉 Dragon
I am not happy about their service. I requested to a supervisor for an affidavit and the supervisor/s never called me back since before Memorial Day which i am still waiting today is Friday. The animal control needs to be more organized at least make an appointment instead of waiting on empty hands which i had to do phone calls and i did not do it because waiting for an officer or a supervisor to call me.
Two bad experiences trying to adopt a kitten and I’m out! Several years ago I attended “kittypalooza” (free cat adoption event) and chose a kitten I liked. I was told I would need to call a phone number where wait time was over an hour to adopt the kitten. However! someone else may already be ahead of me in queue to adopt the same kitten. If they were it would be a waste of time as I would wait over an hour and be declined. This seemed very inefficient to me so I left. Three years later I contacted one of their foster moms about another kitten. Someone else had shown am interest in the kitten I initially liked so she offered for me to meet another kitten. Sounds reasonable, but then she told me the other kitten who no one else showed interest in besides me might be adopted out to the person coming by to see the first kitten if I didn’t come by the next day. I offered multiple other dates the same week to meet this kitten, but apparently it had to be a certain day or the kitten may be adopted to someone else… even though no one else was even interested. I moved my schedule around to accommodate her. The kitten wasn’t a good fit but the experience was worse. I much prefer Bastrop animal shelter where you can meet a lot of kittens at once and easily adopt one the same day. Austin animal shelter won’t even let you meet a cat without filling out a form and waiting around. Waste of time! The second star is for the kittens because they are still pretty awesome.
Over the past weekend, I repeatedly saw two dogs with collars but no tags roaming around my neighborhood. I called 311 3x because of the heat, they were not looking well (i also posted all over social media trying to find the owner) I was able to coerce them to come to my house for food and water on a few occasions. I even tried to bring them inside but one of them got really aggressive with my cats so I just decided to keep feeding and watering them outside. I left my back gate open because my backyard has quite a bit of shade. When it had been 4 days, I finally decided to try and take them to the AAC myself. For reference, I am pregnant and preeclamptic and all of this was above and beyond what I should have been doing for mine and my child’s health. One of the dogs was big. He was not good on a leash or around other dogs. He pulled me onto the ground multiple times, tried to fight other dogs, etc. I became very stressed. I checked in, filled out my paperwork, and waited. They were scanned for microchips and their owners were located. I was given their addresses and asked to drop them off myself.I told the employee that I was not willing to do that. I explained that I am pregnant and supposed to be on bed rest and I really just needed the owners to come pick them up. I was shamed by the employee “don’t you want to help them?”My keys were sitting on one of the benches and I had the dogs under a tree to try and cool them down. When it became apparent that this employee was not willing to work with me for an alternative solution I handed her the leashes, told her my health was more important and that I was leaving.I started to walk away and realized I’d forgotten my keys. I turned around to get them and when she realized I’d forgotten them she ran over to the bench and sat on my keys so that I could not leave.I kid you not, she purposely sat on my keys to keep me from leaving. That cannot be policy. What happened next I am not exactly proud of but I continuously tried to advocate for mine and my child’s health only to be guilt tripped. I pushed her aside, grabbed my keys, and left.Animals deserve help. Preeclampsia is serious. There had to be a way to work with me to find a solution that suited us both. I used to volunteer at the AAC pre-COVID so this stressful and bizarre experience was really disappointing to me.Three stars because I still love the AAC, but the employees clearly need to be better trained if they think it’s appropriate to detain an at-risk pregnant woman.
They DO NOT accept walk-ins for microchipping. Drove across town to get my dogs microchipped as per their website Yes, if you are a Travis County Resident, you can get a free microchip and ID tag for you pet... Please come down to Austin Animal Services during the hours of 11am to 7pm to get a free microchip and/or ID tag for your pet. When I got there I was told they didnt accept walk-ins and directed me to try emancipet for $20 per dog. Fair enough. 4-5hr wait at emancipet. No thanks. Sorry doggos.
Great facility with terrible website/online presence. (It wasnt always like this.)The link to view adoptable pets is broken. The bit.ly links on Instagram dont work. You can find their animals on Petfinder (but thats not stated on the site). Its not always clear which animals are in the shelter vs in foster. The annoying chatbot will ask you that if you try to inquire about an animal (even if you have its AAC ID number.) Had to search multiple sites looking for information about Kitten adoption event today. *Nothing* on their website about events.I think the current director has no experience with animal shelters and it shows. Austin can do better.Could probably get a UT student to structure and coordinate all your socials as a marketing project.
Have rescued two different dogs from them! Six years apart and I remembered I wanted to go back to them for a pup! They do a really good job of having foster parents that go above and beyond to make sure the pups got to a loving home and made the experience very memorable!
It’s an incredible animal center. In fact, I’ve lived in many cities across the U.S. and it’s the best animal center I’ve EVER seen. Incredible people. My experience December 31, 2015 was incredible, I adopted my first dog, Journey and I still love her with all of my heart today. We have the best friendship. I’m coming back soon to find her a brother!
This is the most beautiful pet shelter in the country. My husband and I adopted a dog 4 years ago, and she became the first member of our family. We moved to NY, and this week we came to visit Austin. As part of our visit we took our toodler to see the center to teach her about rescue and adoption. We will be always thankful of this place. The volunteers have huge hearts, and make this place feel like home for so many animals.
If you are looking for an animal shelter that is no-kill, professional, and exemplifies the Austin spirit, look no further. I work as an Animal Enrichment Volunteer, so I am able to witness the ins and outs of the facility. The staff are extremely professional and they make the adoption process very easy. The kennels are wonderfully maintained and it shows that the local government values the shelters presence because it continually is being upgraded. Some of my happiest moments in this city have taken place at the shelter, and to me, its a little slice of heaven.
This was a great experience. Great staff, low pressure, and a true love for the animals in their care. I came home with a new best friend and playmate. I encourage everyone to check them out if youre looking for a pet. Its free to adopt right now. They even have bunnies!
Officer Amber Harvey came out to my address when my Pitbull puppy got out of my home, she left me a bit on my door informing me that he had gotten out and that if I needed a kennel that I could pick one out. Whoever donated this impact kennel you have saved my boy with this high anxiety crate!Thank you all for all your help and everything you do for the animals of Austin! Yall are wonderful!
We have a special connection with this place. Our first & only pet, our four legged daughter came from here. My wife fell in love with our pup instantly around five years ago… She was very well trained at the shelter & had a great personality. The staff here do a great job & really care about the pets well. Go visit them & guarantee you’ll end up finding your perfect (canine) match! Thank you Austin Animal Shelter for everything you do!!
I am so grateful for the animal center, because our cat had just died two weeks before, and we wanted to rescue a couple of cats. We didn’t intend on rescuing a three-year-old cat but she was so amazing we could not not rescue her! And then the kitten just started doing backflips when we walked into the room and reaching out of the cage and talking to my husband, and that was it - he had claimed us! The little cat is now called Ivan the terrible , although he’s really not terrible – he’s really curious! But its a Norwegian name, and the female we have named lady Astrid because she is a Norwegian Forest cat! but who knows what we really call her! Sometimes queen Latifah is she lays around and walks around like she’s a queen. I hope this helps you guys! I’m a huge fan of the animal Center and Wood courage anybody Who is serious about having an animal to go through them.
A friend and I went in to adopt. He picked the dog he wanted and I found the dog I wanted. So we talked to the lady that was there and she told us that the dogs have been tagged. So apparently if a rescue place wants them they get the pet first. I dont get it at all. You think they would want the pet to go to a home instead another facility.
We had a great experience adopting our boy Murphy from AAC. They helped us coordinate a visit with the foster of the dog we were interested in. When we decided to move forward with adopting him it was a quick and efficient process. We were able to bring him home the next day! Because of COVID his adoption fee was even waived. He is such a sweetheart and we couldn’t love him more! Highly recommend adopting an adult dog. It was nice to skip right to the good stuff and not have to worry about house training and whatnot.
I adopted a dog with some behavioral issues. They made sure that I was aware of all his issues and how to deal with them. They had me bring my 2 other dogs to meet the new guy and make sure that they would get along. They really care about the well-being of the animals and followed up with me to check how things are going. Very happy with the whole experience.
Not alot of parking spaces; they provide masks(cotton) upon entering if you dont have one along w/sanitizer stands. Not the best smell inside all the buildings. All the rabbits & hamsters were all gone. Few cats, alot of dogs of all ages & weight variety, loud & aggressive barking here & there. You can only walk dogs w/green dots on their cage info. You have to wait in line to get info about any animal, their QR code doesnt work well. A nice lil family outing for about 45mins+
WORST FKIN PLACE EVER! You think youre doing a good thing by helping a stray dog in need by taking him in while also trying to find its forever home and USING ALL THE RESOURCES given by this shelter and getting no where, their website their Facebook page their phone call appointment THAT THEY NEVER CALL from. And then actually going in person and getting turned away THREE times.. smh. If someone is telling you they cant take care of a dog, wouldnt you do what youre supposed to do to get the dog in better care?? They could careless to help the dog, they are literally failing this poor dog.. I honestly am at my last resort in just letting the dog free, back on the streets where he was found.
Came here for a volunteering event with my company. I’ll admit, any animal shelter is going to be sad to come to, but this place takes very good care of their animals. They have many many dogs and cats that could use a good home. I came here to help walk the big dogs and the small dogs as a volunteer I would encourage everyone to come here and volunteer to these sweet animals. Some of them are scared and need some extra love. I will be back to volunteer here for sure.
My husband and I have adopted to chihuahuas from Levander Loop Animal Center and we are so happy with them they are like our children... they have been a blessing to us. We thank the staff and Austin Animal Center for being such a pleasant and loving place for all animals God Bless the staff for being awesome. They do a great job.
This place has been a huge help with getting the feral cat population under control. All kittens were adopted and we got the population down to 5 spayed and neutered adults. They have come a long way from when I first moved in. They sleep on my porch now and will even play with me some. 🙂
Ive volunteered at Austin Animal Center for ten years as a dog walker, and highly recommend it if youre looking for a way to stay in shape, contribute to the community, and meet precious pups. I also foster kittens for the shelter, which is a great way to help AAC handle the influx of baby felines in the spring and summer. Austin is lucky to have such a well-managed city shelter.
I hate this place.i brought Skippy to them after caring for him for the opportunity to find his original owners .I told them I would like to keep him if his owners werent found .they took him off the site and said he needed surgery and to call and check the site until he is able to be adopted.i literally called everyday and messaged.then they said he wouldnt be available until after he was healed but ofcourse they said we WONT hold him for you .even though Ive cared for him and he is bonded to me.after a month they said his stitches were removed on the 24th but he STILL wasnt available for adoption.i just contacted them a few days ago and he wasnt still available.they said check the site.i did yesterday he wasnt on there.i contact them today and they adopted him!Im 99%sure they didnt give him to me because a staff probably adopted him the moment he was ready rather than giving me the opportunity who saved him and cared for him.ive written over 30 times and called 311 so many times they know me and the kitty by name.im so upset
Pound puppies are the best! We got this guy from AAC many years ago and he was the best dog in the whole world. We also fostered a young dog from AAC and she was very sweet and found her forever home after about a month. Most recently we have worked with AAC to spay cats in our area and while they could be more organized (AAC + Austin Humane Society), they are working hard to do everything they can.
We have adopted a puppy and a kitten from here. It is the first shelter I have ever been to where the cat rooms smell like the cat food they were feeding. It was incredibly clean. The staff and volunteers are awesome. Our kitten was healthy, socialized and very friendly. And our puppy grew up to be just the best.
Simply amazing. Went to get an oil change at South Point Hyundai and they had a stray cat found on premises. I said I would take the cat to the shelter. Oh my goodness. The staff really care. They didn’t treat me or the beautiful kitten like a number or just “next”. They truly care and I love them for that
I love this place. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The animals are well taken care of and the areas are clean. I lived in Dallas at the time but I was visiting for my birthday and we fell in love with a pup named Karina, she had a limp leg and was having surgery the following week. We knew we wanted her and the staff was very helpful through the whole process with keeping us updated after the surgery and letting us know when we could make the drive to pick her up. I used to work for an animal clinic and just to see them keep up with us through this whole process was amazing considering how many animals they have under their care.
I went into the shelter today to adopt a dog and the staff there was very rude. There was a girl there who looked like she was the only one working in that area. I felt bad because she seemed a little overwhelmed but I found a dog I wanted and when I was finally able to ask her about him, she gave me such an attitude. I asked her if it was possible for me to take the dog to the play areas they have towards the back and she tried to tell me the dog would bite me. She insisted that he was absolutely terrified of strangers. I said okay and that I was willing to wait around for him to get comfortable. Ive had dogs like that before so I understood that they just needed some time to get to know you. She seemed annoyed and she said that I could take him back there but that he just had an interaction with someone else and so he needs some time before I take him. She said it would be a while. I said okay, Ill wait. Not even two minutes later, while Im still standing there, another family comes and asks her about the same dog and she was much more polite to them and she did mention that hes not used to strangers but that she can take him to the yard for them right away so they can interact with him. I was so angry because she just told me he couldnt go back there just two minutes before. And she didnt mention once to the other family that he would bite them. I wish I couldve got her name but she spent such little time with me and tried to ignore me, so I didnt get it. She was young with dark hair and she was heavy set. I would definitely avoid getting any help from her.
We got our newest family member at AAC about a week ago. There were (sadly) lots of dogs to choose from, and we were able to visit with several before choosing the best fit for us. All of the dogs have their basic information posted, and there was even more information available from the very helpful volunteers. Our girl had notes that she *might* be housebroken and had trouble with other dogs, but we havent had problems with either, so I think they may be a little conservative in assessing the dogs. Dont let labels or certain breeds scare you away!
Ability to leave a found but loose and lost dog impossible because location not marked. No signs for where drop off is located. Totally inaccessible for disabled or elderly. Outdoor admission process in the cold. I could not bring the dog contained. Too big and very energetic, uncontrollable and drop off too far from parking location. So not sure how much this will benefit someone else but I will be written management.
I had such a nice time here. The facility is so large, so nice, with so many animals to choose from (which is good because lots of choices, bad because... wow, cant believe so many animals dont have homes). I had a dog recommended to me based on my needs by a volunteer within the first 5 minutes of browsing the dogs, and I left with her the same day. Process was so quick and simple and painless!
I have very mixed feelings about this shelter if I would’ve written a review about my first visit it would have been 5 stars but sadly my next visit wasn’t as enjoyable we had called the 311 about a specific cat to see if it was still available and the original guy said no but was very vague and wouldn’t explain so we ended the call I then became very confused about whether she had been adopted or been moved from the shelter considering she’s 12 and had been there for several months so I called back an another guy had answered and said the only way to find out is if you put in a service request which would take 3-4 business days to get a call back I felt that was a little ridiculous considering we just wanted to give this sweet cat a home. We then went online and It says she was available so we went down there we made it down at about 3 mind you they close at 7 we went in and spotted her we texted the number to get in line to consult someone that took almost and hour to get our meeting and then we got to visit with her then had to be put in another “line” just to adopt her this took almost 45 more minutes just to be told that they needed to check with the vets before we could adopt her but they had gone home it was around 5 y’all are open for 2 more hours and your telling me ALL the vets went HOME? And she said we could simply come back tomorrow and check? If she wasn’t ready why would she be up for adoption? Luckily when we showed up the next day after another 40 minute drive down in south Austin traffic they said she was ready it took about 40 minutes to get everything sorted so we could take her home just for them to last minute not be sure if she was spayed even though all of her papers said she was? Ridiculous I’m just glad we got her.
If you want a pet, go here. They also partner with EMANCIPET which is a terrific place. I have taken all of my pets there for quality pet care given with care and concern. Also consider donating both money and goods here they can use. They have a donation box right in the parking lot. The pets here need homes. It kinda broke my heart to go here because I wanted to take them all with me. Especially the big dogs.
We adopted our kitty Hunkules during their Kittypalooza event. The process was a little longer but that was because our kitty was on a stray hold. In all 3 women helped with the whole process. The volunteer in the cat area was incredible. She gave us so much time to get to know him and helped in finding information for us on him. She truly loved the animals she helped. Applying and picking him up both ladies we interacted with were kind and super helpful. They truly were just excited for us to add this kitty to our family.
I like the way they have managed to take care of so many animals and doing it well. Anyone who chooses to work with these animals truly care. To even be a tech you have to go through a selection process, make good grades, and eat dirt for your whole career. If thats not love I dont know what is.
I was sooooo very pleased the new family member, Magic, that we were able to give a furever home!!! The service that I experienced was top notch and it was way quicker than I had anticipated!! Now for thw just okay part....I just feel that there should be someone there who can tell what breed the babies are that are older and coming into your facility! Magic is super sweet and a typical Malamute and he was listed as husky looking, not close at all, and that us just my example, we saw numerous examples of babies that may not have a home cause they were not listed as a correct breed. I understand that they intake numerous mixed breed babies however, in some cases its obvious and it appears lazy to not take the time to list theses babies properly! Again, I would like to reiterate that the service I received was impeccable and it is very clear that these babies are CARED for, just small steps that may increase thw chance of other families to connect with as awesome of a rescue as we have been blessed with.
Came to their adoption weekend and walked out with the perfect addition to our family. They were very friendly and had really great COVID protocols in place. The staff were friendly and the animals are well taken care of. The best moment was seeing a shelter favorite get adopted and there wasn’t a dry eye in the area. They really care about what they do.
I lost my dog within 2 hrs of putting up fliers someone called and had taken my dog to this shelter. I arrived early the next morning and found Misty alone but cared for in a single crate. They had already given her shots and did not charge me because she had been spayed. Thank you Austin Animal Center for taking care of my Misty!
They made a big mistake initially but once it was brought to their attention they did everything humanly possible to correct it. They did, everything is okay, they seem to care a lot for the animals in their care. They also waived all fees I would normally be stuck with. Alls well that ends well and Im satisfied.
I adopted my dog here one year ago. This facility is amazing. I just go here as a fun activity because its so nice. Its so clean and well cared for. They have a really clear system in place for which animals can be interacted with and in what way. Their large dog kennel suites are amazing. Ive never seen an animal here that looked uncomfortable as far as the care provided. Everyone is always super helpful and excited to answer any questions you might have. Their website is also quite nice and straight forward. When I adopted my dog the process was very clear and easy, nothing felt confusing or ambiguous. Just all around a good operation going here.
Okay! There are some cuties here an not your man, ha!..Fr. I had no ideas lost/ stray pets were at an all time high of not being with owners. The Austin Animal Center at this location is doing a wonderful job so far of hydrating and accomodating animals here at this location. There were plenty breeds especially pits. We are waiting for Australian Shephard/s to reappear, so if you have one, donate. please! Happy Friday!
We got our dog from here 2 years ago and he has changed our lives for the better! They gave us all the information we needed on him and answered all of our questions. They let us meet with each potential dog before we decided. They also had him neutered and chipped before I left with him. Were currently looking for a second dog at this place too.
Loss Animal staging reclamation an adoption center stray pets come in everyday they hold them about 4 days you can adopt pets. The compound is large enough to hold a sizeable amount of dogs an cats... There are some small pets eg birds hamster mouse rabbits etc that may be present also. Friendly staff.
I love that they help animals but I don’t like the customer service. Anytime I go I feel like a criminal because of their demeanor towards me. I adopted a german shepherd Doberman mix puppy from here but unfortunately it died from distemper almost 2 weeks after I adopted her. I took her to the vet twice in that time and both times the Vet thought it was kennel cough and gave her medicine and injected fluids because she was so dehydrated. Unfortunately she passed away.
This place is great! Given what this country is going through with the pandemic, we were given an hour long appointment to view the animals we were interested in. I think that they should put more information about the animals on the website. I say this because of the 4 animals we were interested in three of them had behavior issues which was not mentioned under the dogs profile on their site. However, we did find our first choice and she will be joining our family!! I recommend that you write down the animals you are interested in and walk in with your choices. It makes the adoption process go much faster and easier for all parties.
My first review was about three years ago. I gave it five stars then and five stars now. I had hands-on help in finding the right fit for me by staff member Andrea T. She knew of several dogs that would fit would I needed and sent out a text asking for recommendations from other staff. That is really great customer service from a place you wouldnt expect that kind of care. I would not have found my new boy if not for her efforts. In addition, the volunteers were enthusiastic and you can tell they love what they do. I really encourage anyone looking for a new pet to check out the AAC. They have so many good animals that need good homes.
I went to go get a cat. I picked it out online and filled out all the forms. Made an appointment. It was sleeting & raining. The front gate was locked And there was a sign saying go to the back gate. Well I don’t live in that area I don’t know where the back gate is and it was raining and sleeting such took me about 30 minutes to get to the back gate When I get to the door the woman screeched at me “YOUR LATE”!! She was so incredibly and unbelievably rude and snotty and unreasonable I left. When I was driving off she actually called the cops on me just because I wanted a cat I mean I still want a cat but I’m thinking about going somewhere else because he’s people are incredibly unprofessional. I would look another place if you want to adopt. I just feel sorry for the animals. I doubt I’m first person she drove away with her obnoxious lack of personality.
Not sold on the way they run this place. Very strict with appointment times even when they werent busy, also some pretty dirty kennels. Lots of the same kind of dog, which was a little sad to see but understandable. Not the best experience. Lots of pushy employees that left me feeling a bit uncomfortable.
We loved how friendly and knowledgeable the staff there are and the humane way they treat the animals. Many dogs to chose from and We found our wonderful stray dog, which seemed to have a tough past but turns out extremely sweet. Strongly recommend adoption here instead of buying. You can help save a dogs life. This is one of our favorite place to donate for a great cause.
Clearly y’all don’t actually care about the well being of the animals under your care, you have amazing workers there doing great things for the dogs that need homes by promoting them in a positive light that grants them an opportunity to be seen by a larger audience and better their chance at a forever home but rather than encouraging this, because it does indeed FIND HOMES FOR THE DOGS the higher ups are ruining this, y’all should be discussed and ashamed of your selfs for Punishing your employees for helping find these dogs homes. It’s unprofessional and the dogs deserve better than this. Do better and allow for the dogs to be advertised so we can find homes for the babies who need it. Clearly this place needs better management and leads who actually care.
Austin Animal Center is the largest no-kill animalshelter in the US. They house hundreds of animals at a time and take in tens of thousands every year. Everyone is very nice and helpful and adoption fees are low compared to what the animal receives when it leaves (spayed/neutered, rabies vaccine, microchip, booster shots, flea and tick and heartworm prevention, etc)
Very concerned about your pet, if youre surrendering one. I was unable to go inside, which I was upset. Im an educated animal Lover,5yrs veterinary school. I had to surrender my kitten, Bec my granddaughter is allergic😭 The head lady whom met me outside of doors was very kind nice, Im very far away, I would have loved to go inside
Took cat in to be fixed today. Had him ready to go an hour and a half early. Hes fixed, but still a little drunk. Hopefully he will heal up nicely. Lots of people were there, so I felt pretty good about the quality of service. The staff was great! Very nice, and professional too. Overall, a good experience. If I need anything else for Sebastian, the rescue cat, that really rescued me, I will take him back to Emancipet. Great job Emancipet... 10 rating...G-Man approved!
They used to be great. However, during covid and under the leadership of Don Bland, they seem to care less and less about the animals and customers. Don bland has outright said that animals are “inventory”... pretty sure he only cares about moving them and keeping under budget. The Pet Resource center used to be helpful but now doesn’t give a flying F about you or the animal. Unfortunately we need them to help with the city’s animal welfare so not sure how to address except for a bad review in hoping they will be better. Please be better... for the animals sake.
We were only there to surrender two strays. Pretty efficient for an office that was only staffed with two people on a Sunday afternoon. Both staff members were very friendly, understanding, and helpful. Best to have a reservation as well as printing and filling out the forms before you arrive.Editorial comment... dont go out and buy a cat or dog. Visit the Austin Animal Shelter, Austin Humane Society, Austin Pets Alive, or another shelter. There youll find a loving pet who will be happy to go home with you.
This is a really well put together shelter full of staff who really care about their animals. I loved every second of being there and you can tell the animals in their care are well loved and well cared for.If youre looking for a forever friend, give the folks down at AAC a visit! They have plenty of animals waiting for their perfect person and the staff there would be more than happy to help you find that perfect match.Very clean and helpful! Go give them a visit today!
We adopted a puppy on Thursday. She was spayed the morning we picked her up. They used adhesive to close the incision. It was oozing and opening before she had been home for 3 days. A trip to the vet and was told that the abdominal wall had not been closed correctly and required surgery to be closed correctly. I contacted 311 for the animal center. I got a call after they had closed for the day, and then a call from someone the following day who told me they would send up my information up the chain and would be contacted again by a higher up. I have not yet heard from that person(s). Be wary. It cost us plenty and the puppy has only been home with us for 6 days.
This is no ordinary animal shelter. The buildings and facilities are gorgeous and extremely well maintained. Quality of life for the animals in this shelter far surpasses my expectations. The animals are well cared for by a loving, vigilant, and knowledgeable staff. On my first visit I was immediately assisted, finding the dog that we came in was very quick. I mention this because the large size of the facility might feel overwhelming, but the staff dispenses of that feeling completely. The atmosphere of the center is always quite warm and inviting. If you are thinking of adopting or volunteering , this is a great place to do so.
I absolutely love this shelter! They have the cleanest facility. I went to many shelters before I came here, they were super friendly and there was a place you could go to meet with your dog while your paperwork was getting started. I got a super healthy, sweet doggy and I couldnt be happier. Definitely recommend! They also have name your own price weekends as well.
My good dog is from Austin Animal Center and I volunteer there because I just love what they do for our community pets. Shelters are never ideal, but AAC has extraordinary outcomes for pets in their care and the community is very involved. It is a great place to volunteer. Youll love the animals and the people. It is also one of the best places to get a new furry family member.
The shelter is clean and the animals look well cared for. However the day we were there, they were overflowing with dogs (maybe cats, too), had a special adoption fee offer on, so they also had a lot of people. We had to wait 70+ minutes for adoption, so perhaps they could get more volunteers on board for events like this. Yet they are to be commended for what seems to be good care and being a no-kill shelter. We adopted a puppy.
This was a great experience! The young lady that was helping us gave us information on the dogs that we were considering. she helped us narrow down our search based on what we needed as a family. Once we did our Meet and Greet with our Daisy we knew she was going to fit right in. She still needed to be spayed, so that was scheduled for the next day, and then we were able to pick her up. They were very honest about her condition when she was brought in, so we knew that she would be needing some extra TLC. Thank you Austin Animal Center!
The experience I had there was...intense. I picked up two dogs on the highway. Called 311. The next day, they called me and said to drop off here because they couldn’t come out. I went there and there was no record that that was the case. the lady there said that the dispatcher told me to set up an appointment, not drop them off..which wasn’t the case. She definitely told me to drop them off and be quick about it and get there before 6 because they were short staffed.. However, the lady at the animal center then went from 0 to 100 and said, “so you’re saying she’s lying? So she had malicious intent?” (Yes...she used the word malicious)....then started saying they were going to reprimand her!! I was so horrified. Super horrible. Mistakes happen! Yes, it’s frustrating to be told one thing but honestly I was just frustrated...that’s it. I didn’t think anyone was malicious or wanted anyone reprimanded! And I made that totally clear, yet she went on and on: “no, she WILL be reprimanded”...anyways, They took the dogs, which is great, but the experience was saddening.
I am taking care of someone elses dog and got permission to have him fixed it was only place that was reasonably priced that I could get him fixed and his shots. To give him neutered was only $65 how to get all his shots was 135 total.. youre the best I have taken all my other dogs Samantha pet and I love it they really do care. Note to neighbors what is the way for another few weeks the other couple
I spent all day Sunday meeting different dogs. It is so important to get the best match. The staff here are amazing. Patiently working with me. I adopted a beautiful brindle female. She may be a different dog than I envisioned, but SHE IS PERFECT! I got the best dog for me and my old Maltese.Family friendly. Wheelchair access. Cats, dofs dogs and bunnies!
I didnt have much interaction really. What they do seems awesome, However , how they do that is somewhat a mystery to me.How to get to the facility to drop off donations and that process left me feeling frustrated and still out of the loop and wondering how it all works. Other than that I am looking forward to trying again and maybe meeting some people there 👍
Came to adopt a cat. Of all the city shelters Ive seen, this is one boasts the best facility. Wide, open, and full of natural light, this facility is in great condition to house many animals. The staff is patient and understanding, especially during high load times.Adoptable animals are well laid out, and well documented information is available at a glance at their cages. Staff is knowledgeable and can get you more information on desired animals in request.
After a not so good visit at a different pet adoption center, my wife and I came here to try to find the newest addition to our little family. Most of the dogs seemed in very good spirits, all of them healthy, but a lot of them dirty.First I want to say that I like this place and when it comes time that we want to add another pup to the family this will be the place we come hands down. The reason I am leaving 3 stars is because the poor puppy we ended up adopting had made a mess in her kennel and gotten poop all over herself but was not bathed before her surgery to be fixed. When I come to pick her up Im told that because of the healing process I cant give her a real bath for a week. So I had to get puppy wipes and clean her off as best I could with those.I understand there are a lot of potential pets there and there isnt time to bathe them all, but I think there should be exceptions for pups that have literal poop all over them.
First my cat was dropped off by my neighbor and finally found on the brink of death in this facility.I demanded my cat get treatment brought on by this facility, only to be greeted by an over-sized human who thought she could bully me out of my conviction that my cat be seen by the vet. The vet hid like a coward and never did anything. The next story, would be these fascist giving me a giant, paraplegic Pitbull when I never owned a dog. They actually were laughing at me. Thinking it was funny to give someone like me a dog they already decided would be dead.I have owned 6 cats in my 30 years, and they all lived past 20 yrs of age.I would have liked to see the dog live the same life, but I am certain, he is dead by euthanasia by Lake Austin Animal Center.I have photos and will share my story with any journalist looking for truth!
We love this place. The animals are all treated very nice. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. My favorite part was that you can go into any cage/pen and pet or play with the animals. All of the dogs have leashes nearby so you can take any of them for walks, as well. Great environment. We even found our two puppies here. They are an awesome Rottweiler/Great Dane mix, and a cute little shepherd mix.
We walked in and they barely knew what we were talking about when we asked if a dog was up for adoption instead of fostering. We had to ask three people before we got an answer. We were told a dog we found on their website was only up for fostering and when we called previously we were told that we could take the dog home and adopt him, but he wasnt even at the location. We also witnessed multiple dogs in small portable crates laying in their own feces and urine. There were dogs that were heartworm positive and dogs with mange near dogs that were healthy and adoptable. The facility wasnt clean and we walked in urine when we were looking at dogs. To sum it up, conditions were less than humane.
They let us post our missing cat poster inside and have been very helpful in the process of getting closure. Also I love the facility, the staff is very friendly and you can play with the animals easily. I wish I didnt live in an apartment right now, or Id adopt them all. Id definitely reccomend this place if youre looking for a pet, and trust that youre getting them from a good establishment.
This place is so clean amd the dogs are awesome. The staff are really nice but the waiting time for adoption can be hours. Be prepared. Bring food and drink as there are no cafeteria. Just some vending machines. But otherwise it is a really nice place with a huge variety of pets for all flavors.
This place is unbelievably awesome. There were some people that kicked to very sweet dogs out of a car and I was desperately searching for place to take them to find good homes.None of the shelters in my area would help so I called these guys and they helped the same day! Absolutely wonderful staff and compassionate people work here. Thank you Austin animal center!!! Thanks to you, these dogs have a real chance at having a forever home.
Absolutly fantastic 👏 WOW people, loving caring, they did a fantastic joeat, with my great dane/Labrador during my stay in the hospital, I couldnt find a dog sitter before being wished off to hospital for s heart problem (3 days/2nights)Thanks again guys youll did a great service for both the population 😀 at large and poor me, now beginning to accept the fact that at 83 BELLA is not a puppy any longer, sooooo I am looking for good home if youre interested contact the AUSTIN ANIMAL CENTER @..................
Im very sad to have to post this review after always recommending AAC to clients. Im a veterinarian technician at a local animal hospital who recently had an owner surrender their overweight 12 year old cat in leau of euthanizing it since the doctors felt she was not a candidate for this. I told her I could reach out to AAC and ask for help, seeing as I would cover medical expenses to deal with her current uti and weight loss. When I called AAC to discuss options they used the exact words you should euthanize her. And tried to explain that response with well cats just dont do well in shelters. I understand this as I have spent a few years working at a shelter prior to being a tech, but I also know this cat has a good chance at finding a home due to her amazing personality and laid back demeanor. I also understand that we are in a pandemic with covid but at what point is it okay for a No kill shelter to tell me to kill a cat that is not medically ready? And at what point and age is a cat no longer of importance to enjoying thier life.
Austin Animal Center was a great experience it would have been nicer to have left with a furry friend all the small pets had been adopted but if your looking for a huge pet this is the place to find a friend, volunteers were friendly the kennels were clean but with the covid situation you have to stand outside in a line for a bit best to make an appointment
You have the power to impact your local neighborhoods. These knowledgeable lovely people are there to handle a crazy number of appointments everyday and help you meet the pup for you. My experience was great, but there really aren’t that many dogs needing rescue even in a high kill state such as Texas. I can’t find a sub 10lb female pupper (tea cup size) for the life of me! 4 weeks counting. All med - large dogs. I’m holding out hope but I wish there was a waiting list for pre-qual people... call me / email when the best fit for me is available!!
One of the best animal shelters I have ever been to. The staff is friendly and the animals look to be well taken care of. I love how each animal has their own card on their door describing them and if they have a green dot you can actually take the dog out and play with them. If this shelter wasnt so far away from me I would definitely be a volunteer here.
Very helpful and knowledgeable people. I was watching a friend dog who got out and took off running. Shortly after the neighbor watched found him and referred me to these guys. I was relieved and happy to know it took a few docs to get my friend dog back. Thank you Austin animal center for helping me through that stresssful experience.!!!

2022-03-08I just wanna say thank you guys from the bottom of my heart. After a terrible experience at another shelter here, I finally found my best friend😭 she’s been with me over 2 weeks now and see feels like my child more than anything lol. I have autism and I was looking for a pup I could train to be my service dog. Cleo is literally the dog of my dreams. She’s so sweet, listens so well, sits when strangers walk by, loves cuddles, makes the cutest noise when she yawns, she loves to lay in front of the oven while I cook, she will be sound asleep and if you leave one room she will follow you to the other just to sleep next to you, etc. She truly chose me. The staff here is amazing and so so sweet. They really care about the animals at the shelter and I didn’t have to wait hours to adopt her either!

2022-01-06I started fostering with Austin Animal Center in March 2020 and also started volunteering with them in September 2021. They are the best! They have a really well organized foster and volunteer program, and they really care about their animals. The on-site facilities are very nice for a city shelter. They also have a few particularly great programs specific to more vulnerable shelter populations (e.g. Classic Canines).

2022-04-07First time at the austin animal center and I will definitely be back. I love how nice the staff are and how you can walk some of the dogs. The volunteer I spoke to was super nice and gave us treats to feed some of the dogs. I wish I had a home big enough to adopt them all!

2021-08-21Austin Animal Center is very well organized with a friendly and helpful staff. We visited the dog kennels and all the animals looked healthy and well kept, the facility was clean and cool inside on a very hot day. They make it really easy and informative if you want to adopt a dog, there’s a very detailed info sheet outside of each dogs kennel, including a scannable QR code if you wanna watch videos of the pup in action.

2021-11-21Excellent staff and a smooth adoption process. We brought our dog Luna home from there in September with everything we needed following her spay surgery. We will continue to support AAC through donation and adoption.

2021-10-08They did not have a lot of cats for adoption. The had a lot of black kittens and the cat my daughter lost a few months ago was black. She could not get another black cat without always thinking of Misty. My daughter found the friendliest, most lovable cat they had. The sign said she was a year old but only weight 8 lbs and is a calico. She is very kitten like so we believe she is way less than 1 year. The sign on the cage said she was not friendly. Boy were they wrong. She is a sweetheart. My daughter is very lucky. Her cat Misty died a couple of months ago and she was only 6 years old. She was heartbroken. It tore her to pieces. She named the kitten Dumpling because of her colors. What a precious baby she is.
