This place is great! Started coming here recently for a quiet place to work away from home and Ive been loving it. Tons of books and resources for just about everything, and plenty of quiet tucked away places to read, study, and work. Outside of the practical side, it looks great inside and out.
This library is the nicest library Ive been to. Pick up a book, some coffee on the main floors cafe, and then head to the top floor (via elevator if you dont want a workout because its 6 floors of magnificance). On the top floor there is a rooftop balcony where you get a great view of ladybird lake and the surrounding area.
Love this library. Lots of nice seating areas to read a book, great rooftop garden with view of the river and part of the skyline, the gardens around the library are nice as well, decent cafe, great spot to bring a friend from out of town, reasonably priced parking in the garage
I went to the Central Library to see a doc on the making of the opera Eva and the Angel of Death. Sadly the sound was poorly mixed and it was difficult to understand what was being said by the interviewees. The opera itself was staged badly as the library is not a good fit for a piece of musical theater. The music and story was compelling though. Good performances and a great orchestra saved the day.
This is quite possibly the best library Ive ever been to. The outside (and the 6th floor) is so lush, great views, the color schemes are exquisite, and there are so many spots where you can just sit and relax. Coffee shop on the 2nd floor, a small boutique, and a snacking section. The Childrens area offers a gigantic chessboard, and theres a teen section where no adults are allowed. 1000/10 recommended.
This library is hella cool! Kind makes you feel like you’re iba Harry Potter movie and they have a good book selection I also find some great reads my only complaint is that there’s a lot of homeless but hey I guess it isn’t Austin if there isn’t homeless folks somewhere
Love this library, they are extremely nice to the less fortunate (those not born in France and shipped over here obviously covertly to cover up the fact that Americans are not at all Americans). At least if they are being cheated out of life they can read a history book on how it happened. Beautiful structure, nice entertainment really.
Obviously a great place but..... Getting rid of the science fiction area was stupid. Trying to find the books I like is now terrible. I have one hour for lunch, 20 minute walk leave me 20 minutes to get several books of the genres I like is now impossible. Who ever came up with the idea to merge the different fiction areas onto the general stacks was stupid. The idea might have made organizing easier but, the idea mustve come from someone who is involved in the library but not a real reader.Put the books back where they belong.Outstanding staff and gorgeous building.Put the books back where they belong.Im old and love libraries,. But, seriously, separate the sections again.
Summary: Excellent facility! Tons to do for adults and kids. Many accessible computers and even 3D printing!Details: parking can be problematic especially if you have a large vehicle. The underground parking facility has very tight spaces. The facility itself is fantastic and features a cafe, a kiss area, many meeting/study rooms, comfortable seating and six floors of knowledge. This is by far the nicest, most well stocked library I have ever been to.
Wow! What a library... the building is well constructed with all modern features. Inside there are many, many spaces to sit and work or read. There are public computers to use or laptops to rent. There are 6 levels and several outdoor spaces as well! Beautiful views from the deck areas. There is a little coffee shop, special events center and large parking garage. The children’s area is amazing, lots of room and areas to read books.
The coolest library I have ever been to. They have a huge selection of books, movies, music, graphic novels, and even board games to play. There are a large number of computers available le to use, even laptops that can be checked out. The patio garden is a great place to read a book with fantastic views of Austin. There are also rooms available to check out for meetings.
Although the new library is spacious and modern It was not iconic. I am not a fan of the what will it look like when it is finished architecture. Sadly, I could not find many books, only a shop, cafes, event spaces and a maze of stairs. I am pretty sure this was built for the electric scooter set and not the dear reader. One need only look at the Seaholm Building next door and wonder what could have been.
This is a new modern library in central Austin. There are 6 floors with loads of space to read and study. The roof top garden was beautiful with seating and a view of the water. I don’t have a library card here so I can’t comment on that aspect of the library. There is free parking in the parking garage for up to 30 minutes. The lot does get busy so you may not be able to find a spot.
Hogwarts.Best public building in town. Austin has needed this. We still need a science museum... heck, more museums in general, but great addition to the city.So many positives to list:Book checkout and return system is amazing! Assuming every book has an RFID tag and you just place them on the reader all at once and you’re done.Incredible amounts of laptops, tablets, and other devices free for checkout and for unlimited/unrestricted use.Essentially an entire library dedicated just for kids, which I am not, but can certainly appreciate and admire.Outstanding seating options throughout the space.Tons of gorgeous private rooms that each have whiteboards, projectors, and hookups for technology available for free and easy to schedule.Jaw dropping outdoor patios. They’ve just done a great job of offering a LOT to the public. Price tag makes me cringe, but it all still makes me very proud and happy to have this is town.Only downside I have experienced is with printing... you can only print black and white 1-sided and you have to pay in cash. Expecting color, 2-sided, credit card options. Ha! Something that can certainly be updated in time I imagine.
Stunning place! Private rooms to study, areas to hangout, teens club, childrens club! 6 floors! Underground garage, coffee place opening soon, a souvenir shop!! Wow this place has every thing in one! You need to get a share card from your local Library (If you dont live in Austin) or you can pay a membership to have access to the library! Janitors constantly cleaning,. The gif shop is a little over priced, but if the money stays at the library, I guess is worth it! Staff very friendly and helpful!
What an amazing library!! Ladybird Johnson would certainly be thrilled to see this majestic structure overlooking her lake/river. 6 stories of intentional design all geared toward a futuristic celebration of books and life long learning. From the teen section where ONLY those from 13-19 may sit and read/work. To the many laptops that can be checked out and used onsite. To the Technology Petting Zoo, where folks can play with things like 3D printers. This place is so impressive. And the view from the sixth floor is gorgeous. If you’re looking for a place to spend the day working or reading - I dare say this place gives WeWork a run for its money.
Nothing less than spectacular! Six floors of gorgeous open naturally lit interactive library magic!! Gorgeous views from the rooftop butterfly garden on the sixth floor and a cafè coming soon!!!!!! Staff while still getting their bearings are wonderfully helpful. State of the art technology petting zoo complete with VR headset. Print and copy centers. Plenty of shared learning rooms for studying, meetings, etc. Magnificent artwork, giant clock, and plenty of sculptures outside. There is even an interactive sculpture that leads you on a real life choose-your-own adventure around Austin with four different story lines.
Amazing building and library. A must see if you are visiting the area. This is a Texas size library. There is a parking garage and there is no charge for the first 30 minutes. There are of cool spots and places for people to hand out and study or relax. It looks like they have a lot of meeting rooms that students and the like can reserve. Amazing views from just about everywhere but the best for me was the top floor outdoor patio area.
They really outdid themselves with this library, i’ve honestly never seen anything like it. Let’s just hope they upkeep it properly and it stays in good standing because it seems like the stairs already pretty cranky in a very loud in the center of a library. Still the nicest library I’ve ever seen and been doing and think I’ll ever see but let’s just hope it again it stays that way. Gorgeous architecture beautiful balconies oh and of course great reading criteria.
I liked it cuz at school at kinder elementary 4th grade had a filed trip and it was like a museum and on the elevator I got mostion sickness cuz we had to go Down,up ,up and up and then I became stressed but it was fun there was lots of kids and a teens area it great for teen,Butterflies on the 6th floor, and Turtles but watch out by the lake there was poison ivy I wanted to get it but my teacher said no but it was fun a that library my opinion is that people should go there for fun, art, books, and ativies ♡´・ᴗ・`♡
Super beautiful building. My son says the interior stairways remind him of Hogwarts -- and I can see why. The open spaces have loads of people, action and conversation, yet are not intrusively loud. The reading rooms are silent. This place is re-defining my concept of what a library can be. Its really spectacular.
Closed all day on Sunday so if your books are due back the following Monday this wouldnt be a problem at any other library I have ever been to but somehow when they built this place they forgot to and have not since installed a book drop. Meaning you can only return books when the library is physically open.EDIT: there is a book drop on the North Side of the library. Hard to find. Not sure if there is a drive by book drop available, but this one is not. It would be hard to park and then access it. Also, it was built for a different time even though this library was just built in 2016 and I will explain why. It is an electronic book drop which means it is set up to record the timestamp and assess fines based on the timestamp. So they can give you a receipt to show you returned in time. But now that APL has followed the rest of the country in joining the movement to abolish library fines, it would be better if they had just a mail slot shute to stuff your books into while sitting in a vehicle or multiple drop locations for example on the corner or embedded on multiple sides of the building, clearly marked and easily visible. They say the current book drop is in front of the building on 2nd St. But most people enter through the South and the library uses a South facing view as their main website picture so its strange to see it naturally as the back of the building and even so should still have a 24/7 book drop.
Madly in love with this library. I am used to old buildings (from the XVIII or XIX century, and I also love them) but this modern 6 story building, by the lake in downtown Austin is my new affair. They have a rooftop (the view!) where you can just work, read or hang out. Sharing learning spaces (basically small offices, some with computers, others not where you can work). Take up to 50 books at the time (yes, its not a typo). I dare you to experience it yourself.Note: I heard parking is pretty bad, I ride my bike there.
Our diamond of a city just became even more bright and shiny with our new Central Library. This six-story library is filled with natural light that pours through gigantic windows and well-placed clerestories, beaming sunshine into every floor. This makes it a joyous adventure to climb upward, experiencing every level of our library, from the ground floor amphitheater to the rooftop garden. In addition to the books, this librarys many treasures include: circular windows that invite the kids to imagine theyre in a submarine or a spaceship, a sunny Reading Porch on the third floor where families enjoy some luxurious RR&R (rest, relaxation, and reading), artful angles in the architecture that feels like were inside of an M.C. Escher artwork, a rooftop garden vibrant with native plants and butterflies...As others have mentioned, the parking can be problematic. This week, we got stuck in a 30-minute traffic jam around the noon hour, after parking on the 2nd level. Super annoying issue with the ticket payment process! I mention it here just so you dont make the mistake of getting stuck with a bad final impression after your otherwise glorious library experience. :)
Im normally apprehensive about new buildings being better than old buildings when it comes to public services, however in this case I was totally surprised how successful this new library is. You still need to use the computerised catalogue to find books but its organised well.Dont forget to check out the roof garden! Will definitely be back in the near future.
What an incredible work of art this buiding and area is. This library is huge and a must see if you are passing by Austin, TX or visiting. There is a coffee shop and multiple floors to explore. Even though I am not a patron of the library I very much felt I was, while exploring the library on my visit. The childrens floor is clean and safe and has a great collection if you are a browser like me.
Located in probably one of the most beautiful blocks of downtown Austin, this library is a masterpiece of engineering. It houses 6 levels with expansive windows on all sides. It has large skylights with tons of natural light. Each story contains aisles and aisles of books. There are over 300,000 books. As I took the steps up to the top level (elevators are available) I noticed that each level had some kind of event going on. There’s a “technology” area on the 5th level that has 3D printing, virtual reality headsets, and literally every device you could think of. On the 2nd level there’s an art gallery that I made sure to check out. There’s self check out on each level, which makes it a breeze to check out a book. You can book meetings, workshops, and study-groups — all of the offices on each level are equipped with videoconferencing. Computers are also provided on each level. At the entry, there’s a cafe shop to stop at and grab a bite to eat. At the top level you can sit back and read a book while looking out the window that overlooks Lady Bird Lake. It sucks that I can’t visit this library as often as I would like. I live so far from this area. I would comment on the customer service, but I never saw any staff walking around—I didn’t mind, I was busy taking in all of the beauty.
This is definitely a must see, if your coming to Austin for a short time. The architecture is phenomenal and the view of the city from the mezzanine facing south east is great as well. The staff is very helpful and if your looking to pick up a momento while you visit there is a secondhand bookshop on the first floor and a movie theatre down the street.
Great library! We rode the bus to it for $1.25 and it stopped right in front of the building. It is busy and new, but it is so cozy to just sit and read! The seats are magically comfortable, the kids floor is fun for all. Bring a water bottle, they have fountains to refill them. I want to go back and just wander the floors. Texas seed library on the 6th floor!
Nicest library I’ve ever seen, actually one of the nicest structures I’ve ever seen Altogether. The only problem I noticed but is so easily overlooked was the creaking stairs on my way up. They are so many good views at this place. They did an awesome job. Unreal! Pictures don’t do it justice. Go visit the location you won’t regret it.
Despite being huge, its pretty easy to find your way around. Everything is chant labeled and they have maps/floorplans on each floor by the elevators. The selection is massive, including racks and racks of video and audio, a childrens section, reference section, and two floors of nonfiction.Im definitely spending the day here studying today because even during their busy hours its pretty quiet and the atmosphere is comfortable and conducive to work.
It rocked before. I hadnt gone to the Central branch for maybe a few years. Then they remodeled and relocated and now they made a perfect thing better yet.I love the redesign; it invites and welcomes you.If you cant find what you need for a research topic elsewhere, come here and the rows and rows and rows and rows and rows of books will offer more than you could ask for.It takes two buses for me to get here, so too bad its not closer. Libraries, especially libraries like this one, shine as our governments crown jewels.
One of the best libraries in the nation, hands down! Between the beautiful architecture and gorgeous views, the central library continues to astound.Oh yah, and they have books here - so many books! A book lovers dream. For those who werent already aware, they have ebooks too.
Originally being from a small town, this library was great if not overwhelming at first. Everything is organized once you get over how big it is. Lots of reading areas are spread out. I recommend talking to a librarian when you first get there to answer your parking questions and get a map of the library.
The staff at the library are very nice and well read. So ⭐️ So their recommendations are probably great as well. This library has nice teen and child section. I love how they have them separate. The children’s area has some interactive parts and the colors are bright.❤️ The inside of this library is just astounding and they did a good job. I look forward to their events post COVID. Also when it gets cooler, I recommend to go to their rooftop and enjoy the views😍😍
The inside of this library is beautiful and there are so many awesome spots to hang out and read or study. I’d highly recommend a visit! However, the last problem you’d expect to have in a new library in a city like Austin would be the WiFi but it is pretty bad. WiFi is pretty necessary to get any kind of studying done now and my friends and I️ all had trouble keeping a connection. So now we only come to show friends the library and then head to a coffee shop to get things done.
Of all of the libraries we have loved, we love this one the most. The librarians are friendly, helpful and enthusiastic, especially in encouraging young readers in the children and teen sections. The adult collections are impressive and the nonfiction area takes up an entire floor. The most delightful surprise, however, is the beautiful rooftop garden where you can read, eat and put your feet up all while taking in the gorgeous views of the city. It’s pretty amazing.
Incredibly rude to my toddler while he was upset about wearing a mask. We weren’t there for longer than a minute and the second my toddler started to get upset and pulled the mask down, an employee marched over to tell him directly that if he didn’t wear it then he would need to leave. I get it if your communicating this to adults, but to do this directly to a child while he’s excited about getting a book is wrong. Do not visit if your child slightly struggles with masks.
We went on a Monday to see if what everyone was talking about. It’s six floors of glass, metal and books. The top level has some amazing views of Austin and one of the best patios in town. A lot of people were studying and reading but you could easily host a meeting or get together as well. The rest of the library was laid out extremely well with kiosk and computers around every corner. Parking in the basement was affordable too and convenient. If you like to read or just a fan of architecture give the new Central a visit.
Apart from being a beautiful library with a star view from the sixth floor patio, the Austin Central Library has spacious study/meeting rooms and an awesome non fiction collection (theres really everything but I was mostly impressed by their non fiction collection). Staff is really helpful and friendly as well!
I LOVE this place! The building is beautiful and the atmosphere is great! I have spent time at this library to study, browse, and sometimes just to enjoy the building and the outside garden! I wish parking was easier. The small parking garage beneath the library is ALWAYS FULL. So far it has been worth the effort for me and I appreciate all the work they do to maintain a great space and promote local literature. The staff is GREAT! They are easy to find and very very helpful!
Horrible parking experience today. Parking is full, so the car are blocked getting in and out.For the size of the city Austin need probably 2 more libraires like this. It is a nice building with a lot of empty unused space (huge staircase). I bet most of the cars are parked long-term in here. For 30$ you can parked more than 12h. A time limit of 6h for visitors should be easy to implement. Its the only library with bookable space around the metro. For that thanks you.
Why would you charge the public for parking?! Your mission is to educate & motivate the public to read and learn. So you should make yourself as accessible as possible, not charge for parking and basically tell people they have 30 minutes to get out of the library or pay up. Its reprehensible! Once again Austin lives up to its reputation as a greedy town. Shame.
Always loved this place. I think this is the most beautiful building in the city! Found some good books. The outdoor area is quite nice and relaxing. Have some tech stuff too but I’ve never had any experience with that. Most of the time the staff is friendly and willing to help (may have had one sort of unfriendly person, but not enough to take down my 5-stars) - overall great place. Thanks!
This place is AMAZING!!! Im SO GLAD they have re~opened post~~Covid. My 14 year old and I went in this week to get his summer reading book. The staff was VERY helpful locating his AISD account. The rooftop botanical garden is STILL in top form and were looking forward to our next visit...when my sons book is due?!;~)
This is now an Austin staple, think massive coffee shop with thousands of books and some of the nicest writing/reading/thinking space in the city. Cant beat the roof balcony in the spring or the fall, and the reading room is so silent you could hear a literal pin fall. If there was a 6th star Id use it.
The Austin Central library is world-class. And if you’re driving an electric vehicle, can park in the garage and use the Chargepoint network to juice up. Parking in the garage is free for the first hour. Check the prices to chargers if you’re not an Austin Energy customer.
The best library I have ever visited, hands down! Such a unique and aesthetically appealing building. If you’re visiting, it is worth dropping in for the great view of the city and lake. I love the outdoor seating area upstairs and the children’s section is full of awesome interactive activities. There is also a great board game collection for adults. For library card holders there is a technology petting zoo and anyone can watch the 3D printer at work. A great place to walk around or spend time working, relaxing or reading.
This Library is great for locals and for vacationers. The area for children is large and has a great selection of books. The outside terrace is great for reading and seeing the city. The rooftop garden is very small but still fun to check out. Parking isnt cheap but doable. Highly recommend riding the bus there, if youre a local. Plenty of restaurants, bathrooms, and family friendly amenities. Handicap accessible and great for students of all ages. My kids want to go back!
Amazing addition to downtown Austin! The central library opened a few years ago and is a gem.If you are a tourist it’s a great stop on your downtown stroll. Central staircase takes you up six flights to a rooftop garden and beautiful view of the lake. Local artwork and glass throughout give your lots of aha moments. Paid parking but better option is finding a place on the street as cheaper rates or Uber or walk from someplace close that’s free.If you are a local and wanting a quiet place to work the or read, bring your patience on the weekend. The constant in and out of tourists can be a drag but we love the money they spend. If you are truly working would recommend the sixth floor area near the outdoor garden or for a truly quiet spot the fourth floor reading room for a truly quiet spot. Note no talking or noise in this room and people will truly shush you out or get someone to ask you to leave.Recommend a stop in their cafe for great coffee (free refills all day) or a bite inspired by books in the library.
A beautiful building full of wonderful books and charming librarians. The rooftop terrace is my favorite place in Austin. Beating out a bunch of wonderful restaurants and my girlfriends house (please don’t tell her that).Parking can get a little stressful but you can usually find a spot in the garage. It turns over pretty quickly if you are willing to wait a few minutes. They have a ton of really cool additional things you can use from 3D printers to Laptops.
Beautiful architecture, lots of things to explore. They have a technology petting zoo when you can explore new tech like 3d printers and virtual reality headsets. There are computers for public use everywhere. The library is sectioned of for kids and teens too. They have regular events, like a Harry Potter Club for teens. The third floor has a giant chess set to play on. There is a roof garden with amazing views of downtown the lake.
Beautiful, exquisite architecture.Like an Escher painting.Coffee from the cafe!!.Amazing rotating art exhibits.Clean bathrooms.Great garden patio for reading and working.A section even for zines.Yes, there are tons of homeless people, but have a heart. We are a growing city and homeless people are humans that need a safe refuge from living outdoors without shelter in the elements. There is great security, so no worries about safety. My favorite library in the world.
Really like the library and the ability to rent out laptops. Nice design and many floors, including a coffee shop on the first floor.Only issue or minus one star is the inability to find a table or seat to work out of each time I’ve been to this library throughout the week. 80% are filled up by the homeless and the remaining 20% by college students.
Stunning institution! The fact that there are maps at the entrance should tell you how expansive this library is. The architecture and design are thoughtfully executed. There are tons of communal seating options—from quiet nooks for reading or studying to large tables for playing board games or chatting with friends. Towering six floors tall, be sure to check out the beautiful roof garden that overlooks the cityscape and Colorado River. Theres also a coffee shop and cafe on the premises. One could easily camp out at this library for hours on end. A public space definitely worth a visit. Well done, Austin!
The design of the Building is very nice and modern. It does not feel like a library especially on the weekend. There are often multiple activities going on different floors and the place is buzzing all day. If you want some quiet space there are plenty of reading areas and private learning rooms tucked in all around the place. They have a sick selection of Mac & PCs for people to use and a tech gadget petting zoo which the the only really cool thing there is the 3D printer. Overall it is the coolest public library I have ever been to. The only criticism is that all the books are so spread out across the floors and you can’t really just browse through them without looking up something ahead of time. So if you don’t know what you are looking for form the start you likely won’t find it. Maybe I just don’t understand the way the books are indexed and organized or maybe I’m just a dumbass. I was too distracted by other things to really want to search for books anyway. Was a fun place to spend a couple hours regardless. Recommend.
I’ve never seen a library like this. The most unique aspects were the cooking demonstration and free samples, rooftop garden, art gallery, teen/YA section with maker tables, 3-d printers, a keyboard (a kid was playing beautifully), hangout space, an all-around teen friendly atmosphere that actually has lots of teens there on a Thursday afternoon. I was completely blown away.
This is such a beautiful structure, I’ve never seen another library like it. The architecture is amazing, I love the stairs they feel almost as if your floating on air. The upstairs balconies have beautiful views of the city.. and if course they have a massive reading selection.
The New Central Library is an amazing place. Its more than a library, with access to the latest technology, exhibits, huge kids area, outdoor seating, and private meetings rooms that can be reserved. A fantastic place to relax and enjoy a good read or get some work done. The architectural work is beautiful inside and out.
This library is truly an architectural wonder. When you walk inside, you just get a happy sense of openness and easy discovery. There are fun and interesting places to sit everywhere, meeting rooms for public events, art everywhere, and a million features that feel like a new brand of library, like the ability to check out laptops for use, or try out new technology on display. Its always in use!!!
If you want a free library card, be warned! Of you live just outside Austin, or Even if you live in Austin, you may not be able to get one due to gerrymandering! But there is a roundabout way to get one, which is by using the Texshare card, which you can get from other local libraries without restrictions, such as Beecave library or Roundrock library. Also, you will need proof of Austin Address to get a card. Me and my friends local to Austin went, but we all couldnt get a card! Lol. Either due to Gerrymandering or wrong address on our IDs. This is not the libraries fault, but just know it may be a hassle to get a card here unless you pay I think $160 or something a year.
Views are breathtaking, however, for a brand new facility, I expected better attention to the details. They have 3 elevators, one of which is a separately operated staff one thats nonetheless open to the public. The problem is that it has separate buttons to operate on each floor, so, anyone who knows their way around calls both the right two and the left elevator to see which comes fastest. This obviously results in a lot of phantom stops once you do get onto one.Bathrooms — they have doors with mechanical locking handles. Who does that? They also dont have any paper towels (or any accessible or unisex bathrooms), so you cant get out without getting your hands dirty after having to turn the door handle to open the door.I am also honestly surprised by the doors for the balcony — theyre supposedly handicapped accessible, but it says push to operate. You basically have to have quite a bit of muscular strength to operate those doors — its just ridiculous! Why not a proper button or sensor that anyone would be capable of using?Study rooms — they call them shared learning, and the smallest one is for 4 people. They dont restrict minimum group size, which is helpful, but its still disappointing to see that they dont have a plethora of smaller rooms where phone interviews could be conducted. They limit reservations to max 2h, max 1 a day, and max 5 a month, which limits the ability to use these rooms for phone interviews — how can you possibly find a job with only one 2h slot for interviews each week on average?! At least the shared learning rooms do have reasonable sound isolation unlike some other libraries. One nice thing is they do have the patrol enforcing the rules — they tell folks not to nap, not to have food, not to put shoes off etc.
If you need to use a restroom, do so before visiting the library. The homeless people have pretty much taken over the bathrooms on every floor.Other than that, the library is a great spot for game nights, hanging out with study buddies, and finding resources for your next big adventure.
Ive been to libraries around the world, but this place is something else. I just moved to Austin, and going in, I wasnt expecting much, but everything about this place is amazing. They definitely outdid themselves. The outside patio, the rooftop (with stunning views), the sheer quantity of books, DVDs, and online content is extraordinary. The furniture and layout is straight out of a catalog. Great lighting and loads of seating space with really nice views of downtown and the lake. This will definitely be on my list of things to show family and friends when they are visiting.
An incredible space that went above and beyond my expectations. Ample seating, bright light and beautiful architecture. The outdoor garden area with a view of the water and downtown is fantastic. The parking garage is a pain but its still less expensive then some parking in the surrounding area. Although I wish it wasnt so tight to navigate. Especially at the entrance/exit.Im very excited for the cafe to open.
A fantastic addition to our library system! I was stunned by how pretty the building was both inside and out! Im very glad to see public libraries transitioning from simple libraries to these fantastic mixed use spaces. The government could have sold off this land for a small fortune for more condos or office buildings, but instead they put the time and effort into such a wonderful project.
Its an enjoyable library to walk through but there is little focus an actually functioning as a library. The layout is bizarre and an extreme waste of space. If youre working anywhere but the reserved learning rooms, which are hard to come by, all the noise is funneled up the main atrium and dispersed into every open working area. The views are nice, so theres at least that.
The library is stunning and the cafe is gorg. Parking can be difficult. I could rate it higher (cause in all honesty, the physical building is amazing), but when the staff is so rude and completely unhelpful I won’t. When in the world has it ever been this hard to get a library card? So weird.Happy reading.
This library is one of Time Magazines top 100 places in the world. Not top libraries, top places in the entire world. It has the most natural light of any library, and is certified sustainable. Theres a roof garden, a cafe, 3D printing, video games, and an art gallery. And, of course, a lot of books. Its honestly one of the greatest places in the city of Austin, and if youre traveling, Id consider it a must-see destination.
*Note: This is a how was your early voting for the 2020 Presidential Election experience? post*. I went there to vote early today and it was great! The line moved quickly. I think it took me a little over an hour to vote. They had like 23 voting machines there, I believe. Thats what I heard. I didnt count them, but 23 seems about right. I recommend this location, but Im sure as early voting continues that the wait/line time will increase.
One of the more special novel things to check out in Austin - check out the stunning architecture of this wonderful new library building, then head up to the rooftop to hang out in an amazing garden with a fabulous view. When the weather is right, you couldn’t ask for a better spot to read a book.
Worst part of covid is this library is only available virtually and curbside pickup. It’ll never replace the feeling of being a kid again walking around a library surrounded by books but feeling like you are in a candy store. They are closed you cannot go in and it’s heartbreaking I miss being in the library so much I will not be using their current services online is not the same as in person. Covid sucks and so does all of the restaurants opening but not libraries!!
Great architectural experience....the new library is right near downtown and right by townlake. The library has 7 floors. Good working computers on the all different floors and the restrooms are clean and neat and modern. Great window views of the City of Austin. Great employees neat interaction. Neat Lower level floors. Great Family friendly amentities . Its a library at a whole another level.
The library itself is beautiful but it literally smells like BO when you walk in now. All the furniture smells like armpit and the restrooms are always occupied with homeless folks. Its really a sad situation but Ive seen on multiple occasions homeless men harassing women, trying to talk to them, ect. Homeless people asleep inside the library often or just wondering around, is kinda sad. Not the most comfortable spot to be anymore, but I guess at least they have a place now?
Austin’s New Main Library is a marvel of engineering and represents the Library of the future. A winner of multiple nationals and international design awards, this City facility is built to serve the citizens of Austin for the next 100-years. Plan plenty of time for your visit, there is a lot to see! Fun for every age. Ride up to the front door right off the hike and bike trail. Enjoy this jewel of literacy, architecture, and a gathering place for the community.
Love the details this uniquely designed work of art is. This is my favorite library that I’ve ever been to. Been there several times, and, staff was helpful and very pleasant. Agreed, parking is a bear & I def wouldn’t trust my teen driver to make the sharp exit turn! So, I just park a street or two away and walk. I’m thinking of riding public transportation so I don’t have to pay to park:)
Literally one of the coolest places ever. Its like Hogwarts! The amount of activities and facilities they provide for public use is great! So many things for people of all ages to do. Theres a little rooftop garden that I recommend checking out. Spent almost 2 hours here and didnt even check out a book.
The library itself is gorgeous and very well maintained. However it is in the worst location possible. Incredibly loud construction on three sides of the building, and the fourth side is positioned on a busy street with loud motorcycles and trucks frequently passing. The quietest room there, (the reading room) was still too noisy to read in. Not only that but the people in the library seemed to be inconsiderate of their noise level. People playing music and games on the computers, volume turned up and without headphones, multiple crying and screaming children who echoed through the whole library, people having loud conversations, ect. No matter where I moved to I couldnt find a spot quiet enough to read. Would not recommend going here if youre actually trying to get work done.
Great place. Super cute and with beautiful views to work, parking was easy, but my three stars is because of the staff. Very off putting, pretentious, and rude staff when we needed help getting around the library. Sucks that they took away from the great experience we had overall.
Here is the most popular library in Austin. I know that not very many people go to the library anymore these days ever since the smartphone has been out. Whats amazing about this place is that its in downtown Austin and downtown is where a lot of young people like to hang out. This library has many futuristic designs and it has the most stuff out of every single library in the whole entire Austin metro area. It has 6 floors unlike other libraries in town.
What a beautiful place / invention !! Totally different than any other library around the world. Very entertaining place full of natural light and a wierd design that represents Austin. Not the traditional library that we are all used to. Many public spaces to hang out meet with friend or even for families to spend a Sunday over there. Sections for everything and an amazing garden on the rooftop with a great view over the lady bird lake and Austin down town.I highly recommend visiting this library if you are visiting Austin .
This is ahe most beautiful library Ive ever been in. It offers a host of amenities from a Technology Petting Zoo which features VR, a 3D printer and other gadgets. Additionally, you can reserve rooms for free. You can print, and they have countless computers and laptops to use. All around, its a modern building that makes lots of interactive features that make it fun to go to the library again.
I personally really the like Austin library. I guess it can technically still be considered new since it hasnt been around for too long but its a really nice place that definitely looks like it took its budget and ran with it. The parking garage is convenient, especially since I am bad at street parking and hate looking for it. The place was huge and honestly very beautiful. I held a meeting here before and it was great. Also, they have such a large selection for everyone! I am an anime fan so I was super excited to see that they have a pretty well-stocked anime and manga section. The seating and multiple outlets also make it a great place to study. It was pretty quiet when I went and everyone was minding their own business so I never really felt like I was going to get distracted by outside factors while there. I never interacted with their staff so I cant really comment about that, but they had computers all around to help with looking up books so I never really had to talk with a staff member. The only thing would probably be if you are checking out a book, but the place is so cozy the I recommend just sitting down there with a good book and really just cranking it out then.
Everything is so spread out. The cafeteria had still not been opened. There are 6 floors and even though there are 3 elevators, there is still a wait for them. The elevators seem narrow, maybe because they are 12-14 feet high. There is only 1 elevator going from floor 1 to P1 and P2.Talking about parking, they have their own parking garage because there is not much parking around. $3 for an hour, $5 for 2 hours and it incrementally goes up; even on Sunday. There is free parking for up to 30 minutes, but you can forget about that. It took us 15 minutes from getting in our car to getting out of the garage. The reason is you have to make a left to exit to 1st street, and the traffic is backed up waiting for the signal. 2 stars for the rooftop view. We will never go back
A municipal masterpiece. The nicest library I have ever seen, and right in the heart of downtown. Truly a downtown destination for residents and visitors. I love it.Library perks: Check-out books and eBooks, read magazines, listen to music, plenty of meeting rooms bookable to groups, and space to lounge & read/study/do homework. Kids and teens can play with tech devices, puzzles, and video games. There are indoor and outdoor reading spaces, including a beautiful garden on the rooftop.Cafe will open about March- will have recipe-cooked dishes, wine, and beer. You can borrow a laptop (Chromebooks and Macbooks) for 2-hours as often as you like, and install any apps you want. Library staff told me the checkout kiosk will wipe the laptop and load a fresh image for the next person, so your app store login will stay secure. Be sure to return laptops within 2 hours to avoid a strict late-fee.
New favorite weekend spot to hangout and get work done. They have a great selection of cook books. I’ve saved so much money coming here to work instead of a coffee shop and borrowing books rather than buying on Amazon. I’m more than happy for my tax dollars to go to this place.
The library is full of places to study. I was amazed by the varieties of the chairs and tables the library provides. The library, by itself, deserves to be a tourist destination. However, I only gave four stars for the vacuum of relevant, up-to-date collection in Science and Technology. Since Austin has a good amount of tech scene, people would naturally come to the city library looking for tech related books.
Visited APL as a tourist so I cannot review the staff but the facilities look amazing with something to offer any age or interest. There are fiction books, non-fiction books, graphic novels, childrens section, teens section, computers/printing, technology petting zoo, and so much more!
The parking situation at the library HAS to be in improved. I just attempted to visit the library and park in the garage. I quickly learned that the garage was completely full aside from half of an entire floor being reserved and empty. I was only in the garage for 8 minutes and was charged $30. When I contacted the parking representative, they were rude and unwilling to help. Not only was I unable to park, but I was charged $30. UNACCEPTABLE
Beware double booking of Event Center and one-sided contractSigned binding contract with Event Center and paid deposit for 80th Birthday Celebration. Nearly 2 months later when I asked them about starting the event an hour earlier, they responded a week later informing me that they had double booked and I could move to the Café which was makeshift and would not accommodate the number of my guests. With that, they said they were voiding the contract, returning my deposit and that was the end of the matter. In the interim, I had invited guests, selected a hotel near the Library (booked and paid for rooms) booked two musical acts and one theatrical act for that night, hence there was no flexibility with dates. Booking the library was foundational to all these other bookings based on my budget. I also incurred other expenses as the event coordinator scrambled to find an alternate venue. Since our options were narrowed after a 2 month time lapse, I had to book a more expensive venue. When I asked the Library to pay the difference, they said they voided the contract under its terms and the answer was “no”. I was just asking them to do the right thing. When I reached out to the Director of the Library to see if he concurred with the decision, he refused to even call me back and after 2 weeks I gave up.Bottomline: incompetence, one-sided contract, poor customer responsiveness all on their side. What if I had not made the inquiry, when would they have discovered the double booking? Maybe the month before the celebration? While I operated in good faith, I’m the only one suffering adverse consequences. There are no “do overs” for 80th Birthday Celebrations.

2021-12-22Never thought I’d geek out over a library space yet here I am doing just that. Austin Central Library is a magical wonderland for bibliophiles or people just looking for a quiet place to work. There are so many cozy nooks to curl up in and get lost in a great book. They have a large selection of books + media for all ages and interests. They have a dedicated children’s spot as well as a room for ages 13-18. The view on the garden patio is gorgeous and overlooks the river. There are computers and tablets available and the staff is really kind and accommodating. Daily parking is available and includes dedicated spots to charge your car should you have an electric vehicle. I can spend hours here and this is my new “work from home” spot.

2022-05-12Love this library. Contemporary and sustainable architecture in the middle of downtown Austin, right next to Lady Bird Lake and at the southern end of Shoal Creek.Great book selection in their catalog. Lots of collaborative meeting spaces, technology centers, monitors for use and areas where to go and study/read. Beautiful roof patio with a beautiful view. An incredible update from the precious central library.Paid parking is underground, entrance on the west end.

2021-09-04One of the nicest libraries I’ve ever seen & been to. It’s so grand, it never feels crowded. So many books & video options for all ages. They have amazing terraces all around, you can sip your drink and read a book for hours at comfy chairs outside too. They have almost an entire floor for children. Staff is very helpful and kind. 1st hour free parking and then $5 for up to 2 hrs at the indoor parking garage.

2022-06-07Beautiful, kid-friendly library in the Seaholm District with great views of Downtown Austin and Lady Bird Lake. Setting up a library account is simple. Staff is friendly and ready to solve the toughest of problems (even if it takes multiple tries)! The rooftop terrace is a highlight of this library, dotted with native Texan flora. Return here every weekend with my child and parents. Love it!

2021-08-27Best public library Ive been to in my life. Such an inspiring building, a million unique nooks and crannies to read and a large collection of books. Only complaints are the paid parking (but its the reality of a downtown library), and the hours seem a bit limited but that might just be for the duration of the pandemic.

2021-12-28This place is phenomenal. What a hidden gem. Alot to offer the public. Cool place to visit. The childrens section is nice. They have a piano and an outdoor section. The top level is cool. They have a snazzy Cafe that offers good coffee and cinnamon rolls. The people are nice and friendly who work at the Cafe as well.

2022-06-26Austin central Library is like a museum and library in one. There are so many different places to do work and collaborate. The architecture is very appealing and you can find just about any thing you need there, especially staircases twisted one above another . There is a cafe on the top floor for when you need study break with breathtaking view of modern buildings and butterfly bridge . There are interactive displays all around the library, cool chairs and plenty of windows for natural light. It is a great place to study!
