Love this place , amazing selection of guitars and amps. That one tall bald guy is a little shady though, didn’t know that the boss bf 3 pedal they were selling had a bass input then argued with me that it didn’t and walked off in a huff when he found out he was wrong. I bought it anyways because this is a great store with awesome gear!
Great selection of some really cool instruments here. Pricing seems fair, and they have a mix of new, used, and consignment guitars, basses, and other instruments/amps for sale. They buy used gear, too. Not sure if they are willing to haggle at all here, as I didnt purchase anything, but the employees were friendly enough. That being said, I wasnt even acknowledged or asked if I needed help the entire time I was here. Not that I needed it, but I took notice and wouldve appreciated the opportunity to respond. Other than that, a cool place to check out.
I seldom leave reviews, good, bad, or otherwise since it is very hard to discern truth from tale on the internet. Below is my account of dealing with AVG and the facts surrounding my purchase. My experience with AVG was absolutely one of the best experiences I have had with an out of state, sight unseen purchase.I have an unusually large guitar collection and wanted something cool that I could add to it. I found exactly what I was looking for on AVG website, made the purchase and paid them immediately. Again, all of this sight unseen only based on their online description.Well...I received the guitar three days later (TX to NC), a special Custom Shop model, and it did not meet the description the store put online. It was at minimum, 100 times better! This guitar was more perfect than they described. Good business in my opinion, especially when I received something better than I was expecting. First rule of business - under promise, over deliver, and over deliver AVG did!I was so happy, I reached out to Steve at AVG and spoke to him on the phone, explaining how unbelievable my experience was. What a great guy. So much so, I gave him a list of high dollar holy grail guitars I am looking for in the event he bumps into one of them one day.In this day of people trying to find someone doing something wrong, it is important we let people know when someone is caught doing something right! Steve and his team did right by me!Spend your money here! They may be AVG, but they are way above average! (see what I did there?) They are AWESOME!
Came in 100% ready to buy a Pre-CBS Jazzmaster. Cash in my pocket. Just a generally unfriendly atmosphere. Ended up not buying it.It doesnt feel the way a guitar store should feel. The staff wasnt friendly or inviting at all. It was almost like they were just waiting for me to leave.
My wife surprised me with a 2006 Gibson LC-1 Acoustic-Electric for our wedding as a gift (no, you can’t have her, she’s mine!). Apparently, she had worked with the guys and gals at AVG for months to make sure she to me the perfect guitar for my likes/needs and they ABSOLUTELY made it happen!I called a week or two later to ask some maintenance questions and the team was so helpful, showing much interest in how much I liked the guitar and if I was happy with the purchase.I’ve been here before for strings and they were so friendly. But all of this in consideration, I recommend AVG for all your guitar needs, especially being that they’re a locally owned business.AVG all the way, baby!! They have the best and provide the best.
I’m giving 5 stars because I love this place and I would never do ANYTHING to hurt Steve & Leslie’s business! However I have noticed like others that over the years that the level of service has faltered. I know you’ve grown and Steve & Leslie can’t personally assist every one of us on the first name basis like you did 15 years ago. I get that. But a lot of us have spent small fortunes in this store. Do I purchase a $3K amp every time I come in....no I do not. I even make a habit of bringing my own guitar when I’m shopping as to not wear out the stuff on the wall. But when I make a major purchase I ALWAYS do it here! Just kinda seems like if you’re not Jimmie Vaughan or something the current staff is arrogant and almost bothered by you? They literally tried to talk me out of a pickup/mod “that would cost SEVERAL hundred dollars” and “we’re backed up for months”.... So what? If I’m willing to pay for it and wait to get what I consider the best in town than my business should be valued as much as the ghost of Hendrix. Just some feedback... I’m not going anywhere. Where else would I go? Just don’t forget the little guy.
This Guitar Shop is the premier number 1 place in Austin to buy premium guitars. The selection of Gibson guitars is the best i have ever seen. There are numerous models of Les Pauls, Specials, Studios and Customs. The ES-335 and ES-339 models are absolutely primo.Their selection of Fender guitars is also immaculate. Rare MIJ Telecasters, mixed in with Memphis Teles and several beautiful Stratocasters as well as a few Mustangs and some very special G&L guitars too.The awesome gear just keeps on growing as they always have numerous Fender tube amps. I purchased a Fender Pro Junior tube amp crom them at a great price and it performs majic for me at every gig. There is also nice selection of regular Marshall amps and other primo gear.Steve has been providing top notch guitars and amplifiers to Austin Musicians for years, all the way back to his first shop on South Lamar, which just had tons of vintage equipment stacked to the ceiling. The Red River location is an awesome extension of that original store and has several other very cool affordable guitars for younger players and Beginners. As well as a nice selection of strings and parts... he even found two old Crate Amp knobs for my SLM 100W Head and gave them to me for free! These guys are the real deal and thus place is awesome!!! True Austin old school Vintage guitar experts in a modern setting!!

Beyond their exceptional store and friendly and knowledgable staff, AVG is great to work with. Theyve been clients of my familys print shop for many years, and theyre always reliable and friendly people. Theyre locally owner run and operated and theyve been serving Austin musicians, as well as the world, with excellent guitars and equipment.
Great experience coming in to buy an amp cab. Awesome selection. Friendly vibe, not at all intimidating to try stuff out. I was looking for a 1x12 and they were all out, but the guy helping me did a thorough search. Ended up helping me find a slightly bigger cab I loved, and for a great price too. A unique find at a good price point, I will definitely be back!
The customer service here is superb! I recently had a guitar setup with one of their guitar technicians and all I can say is that Ive never had a guitar play so well in my life. The minute I opened my case I could already tell that they did a fine job. They carry the industries best pedals. Their collection of used and vintage amplifiers and guitars is excellent. Everyone there is helpful and kind.
They are incredibly helpful and go the extra mile. They respond to emails quickly and do not blow you off when you ask questions. Their prices are very competitive and they do not come across pushy. I unfortunately could not purchase the guitar I wanted due to personal reasons, but if a windfall of finances fell in my lap, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt where I would be purchasing my next guitar.
One of the best guitar shops Ive visited. Every time Ive been in theyve helped me get what I need quickly and at a good price. I just came in with an amp I wanted to test on a different cab and they were more than happy to help without pressuring me into anything. Great service and will continue to come here in the future.
There are a lot of instruments to choose from here, theres some new stuff but its mostly vintage like they advertise. This particular guitar was priced at $1100.00, had some dings here and there but sounded great and played beautifully. Staff was cool with my questions, their prices didnt seem outrageous. Pretty cool store.
One of the best selections of vintage Fender and Gibson electrics I have seen. They also have a few other brands, some acoustics, some pedals, large bass selection and a good sized collection of vintage amps. Also some non vintage but great quality used gear. Their inventory of electrics compares or exceeds the stores in Nashville or LA.. Yes, I have purchased from them and very satisfied with service and the time they allowed me (on an off for a few days actually) to demo and compare. Will return.
Austin Vintage Guitars are amazing. I stumbled in the while on a business trip and their customer service turned me into a customer. Nick was extremely knowledgable. I ended up coming back in a second time right before flying out because I saw a video of him demoing a Magnatone amp on his Instagram page. I ended up falling in love with it, I couldnt get it out of my head. They let me sit there for well over an hour playing multiple guitars through it to make sure I really dug it. Their extensive collection of high end Custom Shop and vintage guitars was refreshing and it allowed me to truly experience the amps tonal range. Im so sick of walking into chain guitar stores and only finding a low-dollar selection.I couldnt get the amp out of my head and I finally called Nick to make the purchase. They dont like shipping amps because of the possible damage but they worked out a solution for me the amp to my home in Philadelphia. They were completely cool with me buying it locally but It was important to me to buy from these guys because their service was that damn impressive. I can not stress that enough. Easily one of my new favorite guitar shops. If youre passing through Austin, make sure to add these folks to your list of places to stop and visit.
Always a great selection of equipment, and the staff is pretty cool. They also do repairs here, and the techs have a great reputation. My only complaint is that people eat their food at the counter- take it to the back and be slight bit professional on the sales floor.
This place has some really great gear and some pretty rare pieces. However, I find them to be severely overpriced on a lot of their vintage equipment. It is kind of a must-see for any guitar loving individuals, and if nothing else, you can leave with a cool t-shirt and a picture of the larger-than-life Telecaster sign.
Great refret on the 59 Jazzmaster! Great service work on my 50s tweed amps! Been a happy customer since AVG first opened when my son and I walked out with a 67 Super Reverb. Staff are all very cool and know their stuff. Shared a lot of laughs and a few tears with all there. .
Lots of great instruments, mostly higher end stuff but that is exactly what youd expect going into a store like this. there are some lower cost guitars and a good number of intermediate level instruments. Overall a great selection with whats hands down one of the most diverse and interesting inventories Ive seen. The issue wasnt the store as much as the staff itself. The owner seemed like a nice guy but the others working werent so great. Ill go back just for the inventory, but Ill be ready for that Austin welcome when I do.I ended up getting a 1976 Electra from another Austin store instead. I hope to have a better experience shopping at Austin Vintage next time, I really want to love this store.
Lots of old and spendy classics, but affordable stuff too. Housed in a beautiful shop with well informed staff. Prices are fair & market value - this is a retail store after all. Repairs are very reasonable and fast turnaround (10 days) By far, my favorite guitar shop in Austin.
Fantastic collection of guitars, if you cant find what you want or need, you dont really want or need it. Great staff will assist you knowledgeably or give you the space you need to test them out. One could spend a fortune or buy a reasonably priced fundamental guitar.
After playing for years and having an eye, feel, and taste for fine instruments, Austin Vintage Guitars wildly exceeded my expectations. It is, in my opinion, by far the best guitar store and shop west of the Mississippi, for sure in Texas, and only one of two stores in the entire nation that I would currently consider purchasing a guitar from. I found a guitar of my dreams there and will support them for life as a player. The staff is so friendly, extremely knowledgable, and they earned my trust. Five stars for sure!
I walked in and eyed a vintage Gibson hanging in the wall, a little more than $4k. Feel free to try anything out a voice said behind me. Thats my kind of guitar store.Great selection of vintage amps and both new and vintage guitars. Check out the Burly Guitars they sell there. Super cool guitars built in Austin, I think.
Sales team was rude. Terrible set up on my Gibson Les Paul, then proceed to get noticeably upset when I wanted it re-set up.. picked it up again, it wasn’t changed at all, over a course of several weeks.. way too expensive for the lack of work they did.. go to STRAIT MUSIC OR ERLEWINE. They actually do a good job. Only reason for 2 stars instead of 1 is they have a good selection of guitars, but they’re painfully overpriced. Typical Austin business who thinks they’re better than everyone else.
In-store luthier identified a rising saddle AFTER the price was initially negotiated. The owner refused to even negotiate a price for the fix. The owner Steve then raised the original quoted price written on his business card-without the cost of the fix. Rude business practices and communication. Wont be back...wouldnt recommend.
Rewired guitar incorrectly. Had to come back to have it looked at again. Didnt offer money back for hassle. Didnt fix problem again, but I didnt have time to come in yet again. Labor is so expensive too (compared to other Austin guitar places). The amp repair on the other hand, top notch!!!! Think his name is Bill. Awesome guy!

2021-11-27A Pilgrimage to Guitar Mecca. As an amateur guitar player/collector from North Carolina I thought buying a special guitar on my holiday visit to Austin would be fun, meaningful and provide a karma-filled memento to add to my collection and provide years of Texas inspired playing enjoyment. I was seeking something used, electric, semi hollow bodied and a little out of the ordinary. Not in the vein of the Fender Tele or Gibson Les Paul already in my small collection.Searching online I found the perfect shop to hunt for my treasure. The name said it all. The well organized, up to date gallery on the website gave me much to browse and drill down on in the weeks before my trip and other reviews favorably mentioned the knowledgeable staff. In the “Other” section I found my candidate, a 2014 Duesenberg Double Cat. I’d never heard of a Duesey before but it looked the part, particularly with the black enamel and silver Art Deco details. After extensive research on the company and listening to YouTube reviews I was pretty sold. The clean sound and P90 plus humbucker pickups fit the bill. The tremolo arm was a bonus. John Mayer plays one, on certain numbers, and he’s a stand-in for Jerry Garcia after all.All that was left to do was go to Austin, catch a Lyft to AVG, meet and play the Double Cat. AVG was worth the trip alone. A guitar lover’s paradise created by Steve and Leslie, guitar lovers themselves, for likeminded souls. The number and variety of instruments is breathtaking. I spent 2 plus hours there picking and strumming, listening to others much better than me, and getting to know the friendly owners the day before Thanksgiving. This was the place and this was the one. I bought the Cat! AVG restrung and cleaned it up, packed and shipped it and I have the tracking number showing it already on its way to NC the day after Thanksgiving, a.k.a. Black Friday. I have much to be grateful for thanks to AVG and can’t wait to get home and start making music with my new axe from Austin.

2022-05-31Great selection of new and vintage gear! Very accommodating staff. As fair a price as any place for your trade-ins, probably better than most (and no, you wont get retail for them here either). Recently traded for a Martin Sinker dread. Like it so much I just went back and traded for the 00. Love it just as much. D*** G.A.S.

2021-05-17I sensed it *immediately* when I walked into Austin Vintage Guitars: this place is a Temple to Sound. Everything is exactly where it should be. Instruments were displayed in a way that drew my eyes to what I wanted, even before I could articulate what that might even be.Well-done, yall. You are helpful, friendly, and hands-off. I cant wait to go back and buy some sweet gear!

2022-05-01Bought a few vintage pieces from AVG that are prizes of my collection, this is an absolute gem of a shop that makes me happy i moved to the austin area. Friendly and knowledgable staff that lets you do your thing without bugging you, but also will enthusiastically nerd out with you over any piece in the store at a moments notice.Ive known for years now that the place is top notch in the sales area, but recently took my Deluxe Reverb in for some tube replacements and general service, after dreading it and avoiding it for months. It should come as no surprise, but when i got my amp back (after only 3 days) and plugged in, i was absolutely floored with the sound. My amp sounds better than it did when i bought it. Never again will i hesitate and spend months dreading taking my amp in for service and dealing with it in the meantime. These guys and gals do impeccable work at a great price. Special thanks to amp tech Jesse!

2022-08-02Beautiful, beautiful guitars, but make sure you’re a real pro before going in. I’m still a learner - went in looking for a good lefty acoustic to replace my faulty first guitar - and once the staff realized that, they were no longer interested in my business.

2018-09-25Wow this place has a large selection of guitars. I was very surprised. Usually vintage guitar shops are smallish little venues. This place had some serious stock on hand. It was interesting to walk around and try to identify some of the more wacky vintage models. I loved this place.

2022-04-20Always great to go get my hands on some vintage dream gear. Theyre very helpful and easy to work with. For the hard to find stuff, this is the place to go!
