Getting there is difficult with all the construction but that didnt stop AARP Chapter 2426 ROLL & STROLL group from attending the Naturalization Cerimony to the 28 new citizens who now call Austin Texas USA their home, their country! Under God, Indivisible with LIBERTY and JUSTICE FOR ALL. What a wonderful setting for everyone. Just like I like it: Accessible and Cool.
Nice place to visit while in town. Clean open quiet space to learn some of the history. The bigoted comments I overheard from other patrons was a bit outdated and there could be a few more exhibits to help teach them the experience of others. Please expand the last few exhibitions on current day and the future history we want to see around being an inclusive society to help increase their compassion.
This museum was so good that my thirteen year old daughter looked at every exhibit on every floor. Afterwards she volunteered, “That museum was actually really good.” 😳And she’s right. Loads of cool stuff: artifacts from prehistory, Spanish conquistadors, settlers, range wars, war-wars, the discovery of oil, and the space race.We looked at everything and we’re there maybe 2-3 hours. Good gift shop too. There’s a cafe but it closed during Covid and hadn’t reopened yet. Plenty of bathrooms, all clean, and it wasn’t crowded on a late morning Sunday.A really top notch museum, as high in quality as any you’ll see in DC or anywhere else.
Very lovely Museum...the mental health exhibition was so awesome, and made my husband cry ( he has a mental health disorder) because it was so informative. I hope a lot of ppl visited this exhibit and took it seriously. My son also enjoyed the experience of all the exhibits. This museum is three floors high so theres quite a bit to look at. We hope to visit a different exhibit in the future ❤️
On our vacation to Austin, Texas, we decided to check out a museum since it was raining outside. Ive lived in Texas the majority of my life and there was a lot of stuff I didnt know about that I found really interesting. The was also a small section before you enter the main area where you can see all the guitars through history as well as the largest playable guitar. I definitely recommend this museum. To get in was $10 for the underground parking with a clearance of 8 and I believe $15 admission for adult tickets.
It has been a while since Ive been here. Came for the Fourth to watch F9 in the IMAX. I was nicely surprised to see the Guitar exhibit, being that Im a guitarist player myself. The exhibit was well done and had a lot of info on vintage guitars. Really enjoyed it.The theater is well kept. Picture quality was excellent as well as the sound. They are continuing to practice social distancing so there are only a number of seats available. Good for you Bullock crew.Very clean and sanitize. Pricing was average so nothing out of the norm.I highly recommend coming here at least once and looking at the exhibits and grabbing a movie. Nice place.
We were not sure about visiting with our children after checking out the website. From the website, it looked cool but werent going to spend the money if it wasnt good for them too. At a friends prompting we decided to go. It was very interactive and they had lots of things to check out for the kids.It starts at the ground floor with the beginnings of TX and moved to the top floor being more modern advancements. It was well put together and worth the time.
The first floor alone is worth the visit. An excellent, comprehensive examination of the origins of Texas. The second floor is fascinating as well but seems to be a work in progress. I didnt make it to the third floor as I had spent over three hours on the first two. All in all a magnificent museum experience.
Awesome Texas History With A Beautiful IMAX Theater. They Have Incorporated A Lot Of Interactive Displays To Teach You Different Things. My Kids That Are 5 & 8 Had A Wonderful Time. I Do Suggest If You Want The Full Experience, Leave The Kids At Home. This Will Give You The Ability To Read All The Exhibits. Bought Season Passes & Will Be Back!!
The only reason I didnt give it 5 stars is because there are SO many Temporarily Unavailable exhibits.Other than that, it was awesome. Anyone who loves history will absolutely love it here. There is so much to see in this 3 story museum you may need to come twice just to see everything.
Ok so...this place is HUGE. Its spacious and well designed to showcase the enormous size of Texas history. My favorite bit was seeing the boat as well as literally getting startled by a statues shadow. But in my case it was a long day and I was tired but still it was kinda comical.
I would rather give them 4.5 stars. As someone who is from outside of Texas all the information of this museum can be overwhelming. I wish they had a map or a brochure that walks through the various areas broadly so I can get a better sense of the bigger picture first. Did learn quite a bit but unfortunately not enough time for me to read everything! It is also nice that the museum is very clean inside and well kept.
This museum tells the history of Texas from its indigenous and colonial beginnings through independence, statehood, and more modern movements. While it doesn’t have a ton in it that can’t be seen or learned elsewhere, it does tell a compelling story from start to end across three floors that is terrific for someone not super knowledgeable on Texas’ fascinating background.
Gotta say had a great time museum is awesome loved it theatre concessions are wack popcorn and pickles thats all they got and sodas but thats a given. Austin is the worst city in this beautiful state. Worst city to celebrate Texas history if they had a vote to change capitals like move to different city I would vote yes.
Ventured here on Sunday because we learned that the museum is free on every first Sunday of the month! It was low-key and there werent too many visitors when we went, which allowed us to walk around freely and take our time looking at the exhibits that piqued our interests most. I highly recommend checking out the museum to learn the history of Texas any time of the week, but if youre looking for free weekend fun, First Sundays is the time to go!
This was a very educational visit; the exhibits were presented neatly and the layout was well thought out. There was enough here to spend many hours, and we enjoyed every minute of our visit. The second floor was our favorite, but the technical marvels of the 3rd floor were the most eye-catching. The store was reasonably priced and had a good variety of merchandise, some of which felt fairly unique.I can definitely recommend this for an afternoon trip!
My husband and I spent two enjoyable hours touring this museum while we were in Austin, visiting from Florida the beginning of March. I found that 2 hours were enough for us to walk around all 3 floors and see almost all of the displays. I learned a lot about Texas from my visit. We ended our visit with an iMAX movie, which I enjoyed as well. All of the staff we encountered were nice and helpful.
Came here with my Girlfriend on Saturday (Not busy at all).We are new to Texas having recently moved from California, so when we found this museum and saw that it was focused on the history of Texas, we had to go!Spent about 2 hours there, it was a decent sized Museum, the 2nd and 3rd floor had the most items to read about and admire. It definitely was an eye opener amd explained a lot about Texas/Tejas rich history! Overall it was worth the trip (Drove from SA) had a great time!
Getting tickets online was a little confusing but overall friendly people and a good experience museum wise. We did unfortunately go when there was a few schools which happens, it just made to experience a little noisy and sometimes hard to view things or keep our distance is all.
Exploring Texas and of course we had to squeeze in a quick history tour. This museums felt very somber but then again we only checked out the spacious 1st floor before the choice to head out was made. Lots to look at, artifact, mini videos. I noted a cafe and giftshop. Easy parking for the most part.I look forward to maybe one day returning to explore the rest of this gold mine of history of, Texas, and how it came to be. For the time I did get to spend, I would not only recommend but Id also hope you invite #ThoseGilligans on your next trip!
Great time today at the Museum. Many great exhibits for all ages to enjoy. I certainly learned a few new things and so did the kids. The 4-D movie theater was awesome and very cool info...i recommend spending the little bit extra if you can to experience it. I will need to go again when I have more time to get to all the Museum exhibits...this trip was more about being a chaperone the kids around. The ship was also really cool.
Amazing spot to spend a couple hours especially if youre a history buff. Theres an absolute ton of information. Every piece has detailed information located close by and theres a wide variety of artifacts from small to large. Cheap admission and they even participate in Bank of Americas Museums on Us program. Great for all ages. They even have a decent Cafe on the second floor with very reasonable prices.
This museum is totally worth seeing, especially if youre Texan. Really friendly staff and docents. Great exhibits. Great views from their cafe. Texas Spirit movie was totally worth it! Great, interactive movie. Beautiful building, too. All of it was really well planned and built. Loved it!
Great museum. Really does a great job teaching Texas history. Cool exhibits. Old boat, Texan training plane, old guns with cool stories. Even a replica of the statue on 5op of the state capitol building..... From the looks of her she was meant to be viewed from far away. Convenient parking garage located under building. Walking distance from the capitol building.
Ok, we have 5 years living in Texas, and by a customer recommendation we visited this place to celebrate my mother 64th birthday, and I’ll back for sure. This place is gorgeous, immaculate, and the exhibitions interesting and fabulous.General entry $13. Special price for kids and seniors.
Its a great place. I think the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I wish it was a little bit bigger. But they have an amazing exhibit and its totally worth the trip. Maybe not two, since you can pretty much see everything in one trip, but the exhibits do change, so going out there when the exhibits change would definitely be worth it. They have a parking garage underneath so parking is a breeze and not too expensive, even though its downtown. I didnt try out the movie theater but Ive heard its pretty amazing so Ill for sure have to do that next time I go!
I loved this museum! It was a quality experience overall, and we learned a lot from the exhibits they had available. The first floor they’re currently running an exhibit on Prohibition, and it was easily one of the highlights of the museum for me. They reviewed key players in the prohibition act, and the woman’s suffrage movement. There were several interactive experiences that made it all the more fun. The second floor was more Texas History based, and we had a wonderful guide go over the woes of Sam Houston. They also had a nice cafe where you can get some refreshments. The third floor was another special exhibit focused on video games. They had a ton available to play with, and it was definitely a positive experience. I would go again! This is definitely a great museum for older kids. Parking was $10 and they had an attached garage. We parked there and explored downtown for the rest of the day on foot. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
Great place to learn about the history of the Texas, especially when its cold outside. Was a bit hard to find the way to the entrance as there is a huge construction in progress.Ive spent there 2 hours, as they provide you with a lot of stends and movies to entertain.New section with old ship and other artifacts was not open yet, but you still can see the exposition from the upper levels. Not too crowded and there are workers everywhere to help you with any questions. Restrooms on every other floor and a nice gift shop next to the ticketing window.
Been to several museums, and this has to be one of the better ones. Not just in content but also in being well maintained, beautifully kept and logistical and aesthetic design. Many interactive exhibits throughout the three floors of history. The video presentations throughout also are professionally made and are constantly updated. Well worth the trip, many guides around to help with questions or provide additional details. From beginning to present day - the history of Texas lives here.Other additional options like Imax, and the spirit theater are also in this museum. Usually they also have special limited time traveling exhibitions.
Nice place. Very interesting and entertaining if you are a history fan. A part of it was off-limits due to remodeling (June 2018), so I guess it will be even better in the coming months. Also, Texas is the birthplace of the integrated circuit (Jack Kilby, Texas Instruments engineer) so this should be a pilgrimage destination to all us electronics and computing engineers! The exhibition about this was quite modest. It should be highlighted more (maybe Dallas has a museum dedicated to this topic?).
If you are proud Texan you must visit this awesome museum while in the gorgeous city of Austin .Learn about the states industry and the changes it’s faces throughout the years! This museum offers a great experience for those who simply like to nerd out.Promise it’s worth the price, Parking garage is 10 bucks and entrance is about 12 dollars approximately
We were visiting Austin in a rainy day (I know! Real unfortunate) and we ended up going to the history museum, which was great except for one big issue! They had live music in the lobby and it was extremely loud and you could hear it from everywhere in the museum. This was annoying to the point that we ended up not seeing the 3rd floor (last section of the museum) and just leave. So, my recommendation is that if you go there and there is live music, do not get tickets, otherwise its a great and informative experience about Texas history.
Love it. New exhibits are always coming in and the story telling through exhibits, electronic displays, interactive screens and documentaries is a great way to experience history. If you go more than a couple times a year, see their movies or documentaries, then its worth getting the membership.
We truly enjoyed our visit to the Bullock Texas State Museum. The exhibits tell the story of Texas. It includes a few video viewing areas where brief videos focus on specific periods of the states history. And its IMAX theatre and multi-sensory theatre bring historical events to life! Our entire family enjoyed the experience.
This was the first museum Ive been to. I enjoyed walking around looking at all the exhibits, but I assumed it was gonna be more Paintings to look at. It was mostly historical items of Texas past. But the top floor is epic. Pictures Paintings and lots of postcards. I really enjoyed myself. They have a cafe inside so you can even eat lunch before you go. And its all wheelchair accessible theres an elevator on each floor. Parking is 10 bucks with this heat though its worth parking underground.
The only grief I have is the gift shop redicuesly expensive like anything now in Austin. Soon to be like California where mere mortal would not be able to afford to leave there. No wonder there is such a big homeless problem and if the politician keep being hired to corporations is only going to get worse.
A must visit Museum in Austin. It has varieties of stuffs to see in case you like museum and history. It has 3 floors with games at the top floor. Theres a huge boat in the ground floor and a plane in the top floor. One of the must visit places in Austin. It also hosts parties in the evening which are great attraction.
This is a nice museum with some interesting exhibits. They had just opened an exhibit on WWI before we visited and it was quite interesting. One thing they could improve is explaining the context for their exhibits and why they are being shown. For example, the ship hull of La Belle is quite interesting to see but we had to read all of the plaques in the surrounding area to piece together an idea of what had happened to it. Perhaps a summary plaque could be placed in front of each of the major exhibits or something. Otherwise great though! The underground parking garage was a nice convenience. We were able to leave my car there while exploring the city.
This was my first being there it was so awesome seeing the different things they had way back in time we even saw the first original monument of the lady on the capital. My sons whole class enjoyed their field trip. There is just so much to see from working in the oil, Austin City Limits, WW1,WW2,and so much more
This is a great museum for the whole family to visit at least once. Kids will learn that the history of Texas is not only about cowboys and oil refineries. There is a lot to see in this museum, they also have a movie theater and a coffee shop (but you aren’t allowed to bring any food or drinks around the exhibitions). The parking is quite expensive ($10) and the admission is $13 for an adult and $9 for anyone under 17 years old. if you want to catch a documentary in the movie theater you’d have to pay $9 for an adult and $7 for a kid, plus the popcorn and drinks. So it’s quite expensive to do specially as a family with more than one kid, but as I said, it’s nice to do it at least once.
Went here as part of a short get-a-way. This place was the best part of the trip. The exhibits were outstanding. They were both entertaining and informative. The staff was very friendly. This is a must see place, especially if you are Texan. Could have stayed longer.
A lot of great material about the history of Texas. But coverage is uneven. There is a huge gallery on some of the earliest European exploration, with an excavated French ship, but little on the actual Spanish governance and economy -- which lasted 300 years! Theres a bit on the pre-European cultures, but it feels spotty and incomplete. The biggest emphasis is on the political history of the 19th century, a sort of Whig history of the march toward statehood. There are some fascinating exhibits about some of the early non-Spanish colonists ... including failed settlements ... but its very light on the demographics and economics of the period: how much farming, how much ranching, the competition of the different railroads (something that the Dallas museum emphasizes), landowning patterns, income distribution, the later oil economy, the sources of immigration, .... What was the role of Mexicans and Spanish-speakers?There is a little material (but not enough) on slavery in all its aspects -- where was it most common? what work did slaves do? what were ownership patterns? All in all, though the exhibits themselves are nicely done, the coverage is too uneven and biased towards the Anglo narrative of progress.
One of the most beautiful museums I’ve been to. Very detailed floor plan. Honestly this rivals the world class museums in New York and Chicago. I would know; I’m from Chicago. Also learned quite a bit I didn’t know about the lone star state. Also has a huge star in front of it so if your one of those people who take pictures in front of huge things this is a must go. All in all it was amazing.
I loved this museum! I took the metro to get here and got soaked head to toe from unexpected pour of rain, but the friendly staff totally understood and redirected me towards the lockers. Lockers are free to use, but you have to have 2 quarters in order to use it (you get it back when you are done using the locker). The locker area was clean and open. Totally handicap and wheelchair okay! The bathrooms are very large and clean. The museum is made up of three lvls, each with its own little themes and area. There are a cute little activities for kids on the each floor, its easy to keep them occupied :) Very enjoyable and would love to visit again someday.
Interesting museum about the history of Texas. You start at the first floor and work your way up to the third floor. They did a good job on making it more interesting by combining plain information with objects/ artifacts (?), movies, special staging/ decor and so on. Next to that the information panels were not too big or long so it was easier to read them all. I find long panels discouraging and they make my head explode. Here is was always a very nice amount of information.First and second floor are all about the history. The third floor is more relaxing and talks about music stars, professional athletes, pictures of Texas from the sky, ranches, ...The café on the second floor gives a break right on time. They also offer other services (like movies).
Visited with the kids on the first Sunday of the month. We had an excellent time learning about our states history and the extra activities were so fun! Be sure and snap a photo in front of the huge bronze star. We utilized the all-day parking in the garage below the building and walked a couple blocks to see the capital building.
Had a grand old time while here picked up some Texas paraphernalia in the lobby and saw some pretty cool exhibits including at the time, the gaming history exhibit which was pretty fun and they had a few demos and what not. Really nice, informative, well maintained museum! While there check out the food court for a quick bite and head out to the balcony on a really nice day for some great photo ops of the Capitol building!
I really enjoyed this museum. Its three floors of some pretty comprehensive Texas history. You really get a good perspective on why Texans have such pride in their state and identity, I had no idea the history the people and state went through. On the bottom floor you will find a large colonial ship, movie theater and a rotating exhibit I think (prohibition when I went). Second floor is the Wild West days, and about the land and farming. Up on the top you will find info closer to modern times about media, oil and war.Overall, well worth the money, for adults and kids.
Three floors of amazing history! And a decent size gift shop. Interactive screens for all ages and mini documentaries/movies bringing history to life. Texas history beginning in mid 1600s up to recent developments. The IMAX theater featured several choice documentaries and a movie, which changes up every couple months.
Worth visiting, especially for Texas history! The exhibits are reasonable. While some areas didnt have an abundance of items, the method of display was very informative, and easy to navigate. The facility was beautiful, clean and not crowded (on a Monday). Parking is an adjacent garage with easy access and reasonable rates.
I was sad there wasnt more about the Texas Rangers and more modern events in Texas. There wasnt a lot to keep younger kids engaged. But as an adult who its a native Texan, I really enjoyed the museum. They did have a kids craft today (Saturday) so that was a nice surprise.
This museum is not only for Texans and Americans but also good for tourists from outside of the US who wants to better understand the history and forming of the state of Texas and the natives living there before the Europeans came. There is also an IMAX theatre showing not only the standard wildlife films but also movies like the latest Star Wars. Good place to spend a rainy day in Austin.
Excellent museum, we learnt lots and lots about Texas State History. We were especially impressed by the reconstruction of La Belle, a French ship wrecked in the Gulf of Mexico. We also learnt about all the battles leading to Texas independence from Mexico plus their role in the Civil War.
Go here! There is the remnants of an amazing French ship From the 1600 that ran aground and was unearthed som 300 years later. The history of Texas is tremendous and quite literally encompasses all parts of the creation of the US to today. Lots of good stuff here to learn and see.
Nice layout. Type is offered in both English and Spanish. Elevator and stairs. Bathrooms are open. Nice overall history of Texas and good displays of its products. Plenty of space for wheelchair. Not super busy, we went during the week. $13 entrance fee was reasonable but $10 for parking seemed high. Overall a nice museum.
Awesome experience. My wife isnt a native, and it was so much fun getting to share this history with her. The exhibits were interesting and varied, covering everything from the earliest explorers to the modern age. I learned a lot, as well. We really enjoyed the guitar exhibit, too!
They have a free day each month - GO!! Dont even think about it. For tourists who happened to come at the wrong time, still worth a visit. Very cool exhibits and at least one traveling exhibit. Would highly recommend; spent 3+ hours there and still didnt get to everything.
I cant believe Ive never visited in the past! I got a History lesson like no other. Too bad we arrived within an hour of the museum closing. In just this short time I learned things I either didnt know or had forgotten about. We are definitely coming back and making it an entire day of history for us and two foreign exchange students were hosting.
Fantastic Museum! Impressive collection of artifacts & memorabilia. We took a group of ten year old girls and they were intrigued from start to finish. The La Belle Shipwreck is phenomenal! The place is clean, well laid out, and staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The Imax on the Turtle Odyssey was super cool.Highly recommend!
This museum contains just about everything there needs to know about Texas History, with admission of course. I found every exhibit fascinating but my favorite would have to be the Belle, Robert Cavalier de La Salle’s ship that went down in Matagora Bay and was surfaced along with everything in it including a cannon marked with the crown of The Sun King.
This is one of the coolest museums I have ever visited. My wife and I were on vacation in Austin and jumped at the opportunity to take in the local and regional history. Each floor reflects the history from a different era. The IMAX theater movies are extra, but so worth the cost. I highly recommend you make this part of your visit to Austin!
Really excellent museum! This was not a part of the original plans for our four-day trip to Austin, but one rainy day left us scrambling for new plans to improvise with, and I have to think it was fate that took us to this really lovely museum. Tons of great info on Texas history, and history of the entire country, in a well-curated and accessible museum located right in between the state capitol and the UT campus (which are both also great sightseeing opportunities, that you could make a whole day out of).

2022-06-14I really enjoyed my experience here. I wasnt expecting the remains of a ship to be housed here. There are plenty of places in the exhibit to sit down which is important when you have a disability. There are also elevators and ramps. I especially enjoyed the exhibits about the indigenous peoples. I only wish there was more about ancient indigenous culture. Theres a section on how Texas became independent, civil rights, and Texas industries.

2022-06-23My best friend was visiting from NY and is a museum fan. She picked here and it was a great experience, definitely be prepared for a good 4+ hours stay if you plan to read in detail or want to really pay attention. There was plenty to do once inside such a movies and a cafe, but the museum alone was worth it.

2022-06-05Pretty good museum and decent size - only issue I had was finding bike parking (there was none) so I had to lock on a trash can. But we went on the free entrance on Sunday which is once a month. Definitely worth a visit!

2022-01-22Great experience and necessary stop when in Austin. Someone who didn’t grow up in Texas I missed Texas history in school, it was fascinating to learn and see the history here. We did a self guided tour, but hopefully they have guided tours available other times as well.

2022-06-07This is a very neat museum. The first Sunday of every month is free :)Their IMAX theater is so great!! They open the seats from about thirty minutes before so if you want good seats, you want to be there a bit earlier and wait.

2022-05-31It was great to learn about Texas history. They do an excellent job of covering everything from ancient times to now. And while I do believe some of their exhibits need an update on their choice of language, they have clearly made an effort to make sure to discuss the struggles and inequality that still exist today and leave you with a hopeful sense of how Texas can be better moving forward.

2021-11-18The museum is big but the exposition is a little bit poor. Good for children.I believe Texas has richer history than what was shownI loved the small theaters where you can watch short movies about history. (I wonder why they didnt tell the whole story about San Jancinto battle and how it ended by taking the emperor of Mexico as a hostage, the history should always be cited as whole and complete)

2021-09-04Texas history from Native Americans up through the space age is on display in this engaging Museum. It is arranged in a multitude of floors and Exhibits with many interesting artifacts and displays explaining the wide variety of History here in the Lone Star state. A couple of the attractions were not open due to the covid-19... But it is still well worth a visit! I really enjoyed the Native American and early Spanish history. There is excellent coverage of the oil business as well as the cowboy era. A lovely museum gift shop is available as well as clean restrooms. Elevators are available for those who may need them. Parking is available via a ramp on site, at rear of building.
