Wont be coming back to eat here anymore. We walked in and nobody greeted us, instead they argued in front of us where we were going to sit. The waitress left me feeling like she didnt want to serve us. She had no enthusiasm. The food was was disappointing as well. My eggs over easy were raw in some areas, no seasoning, and the bacon was hard. When we left, the waitress saw us leaving as she was taking an order and she cut our group off and nearly ran my 4yr old over when she left the table she was attending. All in all, the service sucked and it lost them a returning customer.
Ended up showing up around noon thinking I might be able to catch breakfast before it was over not knowing that they serve breakfast all day I did not look at the lunch menu but decided to move forward with breakfast portions were very well sized but the one entree had my mind blown was the amazing French toast that they serve it had been many many years since I last had such great and tasteful French toast how do you recommend to try these
Had the best liver and onions I have had in many years. Sign outside said (hiring all positions). I expected a long wait, but was pleasently surprised. I was seated promptly and Lindsay, my server. She was pleasant and I got good service. Will definitely come again when in Amariool.
Would give less than one star if I could. When we were seated we sat there for some time before the lady cleaning the table next to us took our drink order. When our waitress did finally took our order I don’t know what she did with it but when we asked about it she told us that it was Saturday morning and that they were made in the order they were put on and there were other people there besides us. I told her that we had been waiting for 55 minutes and she again told us we were not the only ones there. She did go check on it and came back to inform us that the order had only been placed 25 minutes ago. Magic of modern technology we know it had been closer to an hour. Just then our food magically appeared. Cold and more cold. Will NOT be going back. Youngbloods Stockyard has them blown out of the water.
My husband raved about how good this place was. So we went there for breakfast. We were seated quickly. However, it was a good 15 to 20 mins before we even got asked for our drink order. Now before that was taken, two gentlemen were seated next to us approximately 15 mins after we sat down. No sooner were they seated the waitress was asking them what they wanted to drink. Turns out she was our waitress and not even theirs. She saw me whip my head around because they were getting taken care of before we have even been greeted and ask for our drinks choices. I am all about understanding when things are busy and it was definitely busy. Especially with a big table in the back. That and lucky for us was also our waitress table. Now our waitress did finally ask what we wanted to drink. She was nice and polite and we knew she was struggling and stretched thin. It did take another at least 15 mins to get our drinks and we finally got our order in. So we’ve been sitting at our table for at least 40 to 45 mins before even ordering our food. Then the waiting game began again. It wasn’t just us either seemed everyone around us except what seemed to be the “regulars “ were waiting on our food for at least 40 to 45 mins. I am very forgiving of slow service when the food is worth waiting for. In this case, it was not! Me personally I ordered the veggie omelet with home potatoes or country potatoes whichever they are called. They we’re under cooked and weren’t even crispy if you know what I mean…. My veggies were barely sautéed before eggs were added and the eggs even still had some undercooked areas. The pancake was awesome!! The Mocha coffee was delicious. Our waitress although we didn’t see her very often she did come by often enough to see to our drinks and I know she was giving her best. We were cashed out by the manager and when my husband was asked how everything was he said it was alright all except the huge wait time. This woman couldn’t even offer an apology for the long wait on EVERYTHING except the seating time. She literally catered to the regulars and didn’t seem to care one bit about any of the other customers that had been waiting a really long time. If it wasn’t for the waitresses waiting on these tables it was the only thing that made the wait time bearable. Far as I am concerned that manager should have been in the kitchen helping her cook staff bust them foods out. That way the food could have at least been cooked properly! Anywhere and anything more then what she was doing because it wasn’t enough to make that restaurant run smoothly for a Friday morning early afternoon. Definitely could have done better but could have been worse. Still left a decent tip because everything was correct and drinks stayed filled. Everything just took too long. Thanks for doing your best Brittany I do believe was our waitress’s name. Hope it got better for you!
Love stopping in at Calico County on the way out to for our ski trips! They serve a fantastic breakfast where you can get the eggs in all sorts of styles (garden, Southwest, sausage, etc) and complimentary (and very tasty) cinnamon rolls (something you won’t get at IHOP or Denny’s). It has a nice large and nostalgic seating area. Service was a little slow this past trip, but the wait staff was reasonably attentive. Cream cheese icing on the rolls and quicker food would put this spot over the top.
Very poor service tonight. Took over 7 minutes to be seated no one was at the front. There was only 4 tables busy when we arrived. Our server was terrible and did not care at all. The guy at the front register was playing his phone the entire time we were there after being seated. At the time to check out we waited over 10 minutes to check out.I would recommend bringing back the comment card to fix the issues before you just have to close the doors. Seen lot of bad reviews for this place lately and can see why.
I was seated promptly and my order taken. My server brought out two of their little cinnamon rolls which were delicious. My main course was the two egg breakfast with sausage and home potatoes with biscuits and gravy. Frankly, except for the cinnamon rolls that Calico County is famous for, and the fried potatoes which were VERY tasty, everything else was pretty much run of the mill - eggs over easy with a side of sausage. Adequate, but nothing really stood out. When I got ready to pay my bill I had to hunt for someone to work the register, but an employee was found and all ended well.
Driving back from Colorado, after a week of fun in the 🏔. Saw this on our way yup but it was too early to try the breakfast. First the rolls and cinnamon rolls. Had me salivating. Entree was 2 eggs, chicken fried steak with biscuit & gravy :) that’s what I’m talking about refueling 🤣. I think I needed some healthy carbs soon. @huangflash
My wife and I dined here last night. The food was amazing, but our servers service was astronomical. Kaitlyn was our server, she went way overboard from the normal to make our dining experience perfect. This restaurant has always been a great place to dine, the food is always top notch, and service to good. Last night it was perfect, on all three counts. Thank you so much Kaitlyn...
Boy time sure changes things! today 12/8/2021 went in this evening first time in 3 years and service was good. waitress was good. however I ordered smothered steak, mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. the steak and mac and cheese were cold. didnt have time to send it back. the steak used to be real tender would literally fall apart just touching it with a fork. now had to use a knife and some presureto cut it.unfortunately a great place to eat is now sub par at best and I doubt I will return. so we thought wed give them 1 more shot. food was not great but I went up to 2nd star because waitress was good
OMG fantastic! In 30 years its the first time Ive eaten there We loved it!! Fresh home cooked food awesome! Best coffee in town hands down! Yes even better than the cappuccino at... Biscuit and gravy both homemade and the gravy was a rue gravy! Chicken fried steak was eds meats,😋 the eggs were actually exactly as I ordered them no doily not runny or overcooked they were perfect!! first time in a very long time that has happened! The French toast and pancakes were excellent also we will definitely be back!
This has been, by far, the worst restaurant I have ever been to, food-wise. The chicken fried steak was tough and unappetizing and the gravy was so unflavorful it didnt help. The cinnamon rolls were so hard that they had to be microwaved in order to become edible. The eggs were extremely slimy and not cooked well at all. The omelette had a literal slice of Kraft Single cheese on top. Overall, the flavors were totally bland as the food was also not seasoned properly, and everything was cooked extremely poorly. Our waitress also failed to bring us a side of egg, which we reminded her of. However, after seeing the quality of our meal we were not bothered by its absence. I would not recommend this to anyone, and am perplexed and honestly worried by the rave reviews.
Got Thankgiving diner here in 2016 and got take out once or twice since then. Food was ok, not great and prices were reasonable. The owners and management changed about a year ago. I havent been back since. Have heard some say the food and service are not as good as it once was, I cant say from personal experience.
The food was delicious. Everyone at my table enjoyed their food. I had the turkey n dressing and the turkey was so flavorful and juicy! Our waitress Jennifer was very sweet. She took great care of us!! I definitely will go back and recommend this place to anyone looking for a wonderful place to eat..
Okay place for breakfast. Service was VERY slow!! I was disappointed because I thought the breakfast special included a full waffle. I only received a half waffle. Server said all breakfasts had a half waffle. Only the senior breakfast was marked as a half waffle. I would have gotten that had I known. I wanted more waffle, not more eggs, meat, and potatoes.
Awesome southern down home feel & home cooking. Everything weve ordered there has been wonderful. The free rolls & cinnamon rolls are so good you cant get enough of them; but, resist the urge so you have room for your entrées. Employees are always friendly & very attentive. A must stop in Amarillo.
We give 3 stars because the food was good, actually way better than the last time we came (it was over cooked on the broc-cheese-rice casserole and burnt chicken fried steak is never good). But this service not so great, so loss of star. There were other wait staff members running circles around ours. I understand we are all understaffed and busy and well just life period is crazy sometimes; however just like with our businesses and what we teach our children when you work, you actually work hard then after you can play harder than you work.
Poor service on Dec 28th between 130-230 we sat for 25 min before anyone came. Then another 15 min before rollsWhen we placed our order took too long. Countrypotatos were burnt! The eggs overcooked i asked for lightly scrambled. Presentation was AWFUL.WE WALKED OUT AFTER MY HUSBAND COMPLAINED. Skip it!
Great service and food. Except for part of the Pot roast It should have its own gravy with the meat juice. The gravy provided is mash potato gravy. Doesnt compliment the pot roast at all in my opinion. Loved that the potatoes and carrots tasted like the pot roast. This opinion of mine does NOT take away anything from this place. I love it. Will definitely be back.
Been going here my whole life. Today was the first time in a while and Im not really in a hurry to go back. My waitress spoke to me to take my order and to bring my check and thats it. Had I not ordered both water and tea, I would have run out of something to drink. Never refilled either, never did a touch back to see how my food was. Didnt ask how my food was when she dropped off the check.
I was seated at around 1:15 pm. I waited for 15 minutes with absolutely NO acknowledgment! No, hi, Ill be right with you, no one would even make eye contact! 2 tables seated after me were waited on and I couldnt even get anything to drink! I was very hungry and my blood sugar was dropping 😕. I know that its not been easy to find people to work, but at least say something!
The service sucked and food was poor quality I believe there cabbage came frome a can, the ribeye had no flavor and mostly fatty. Broccoli rice casserole wasnt too bad.The server forgot alot and took forever. By the time she brought my jelly the biscuits were cold. My daughter finished her pancakes b4 her hash browns came out of the kitchen with no crisp on them whatsoever and her sausage patty was more like a hockey puc....yup I am definitely disappointed 😑
Great portion size! Clean restaurant. Overall I would recommend. The only downside was the service. When our main meal arrived we had to request the side salads we had ordered. It felt like we didnt get the attention we should have had bearing in mind how quiet it was.
I eat here way too much. We particularly like the breakfast all day. I also really like their pancakes. The dining area is casual and the staff works super hard. We always find the service to be excellent. Also a treat are the fresh cinnamon buns (small and not too sweet) served with every meal. If you like home cooking, youll love it. (Warning: portions can be large.)
Folks, this place is highly rated, but it is definitely over rated. While the decore was charming and the service friendly, the food was pitiful. The eggs and hash browns were good, but the cinamen roll snacks were just like they were out of a can, the biscuits were cold and flat, the gravy was tasteless, and even the bacon was off and low quality. Sorry but dont waste your time with this one.
This was our first visit to Calico County Restaurant and we were so impressed! We had a delicious breakfast with large servings! We loved the special touch of a basket of mini cinnamon rolls! All of the personnel were very friendly and provided great service! We will be back!:)
We just left with all of our food on the table. My husbands breakfast burrito was missing eggs and cheese, filling was gray and salsa was spoiled. My scramble was gritty and grits were completely unseasoned. Service was slow and seating was uncomfortable. Coffee was weak, cup was dirty. Just go anywhere elae.
My wife and I used to go to IHOP on Western for years. Always had great service and food. Now, not so much, poor management, poor service, poor food.A friend of mine suggested Calico Count Restaurant, we enjoyed the meal, service and the clean restaurant. It is now our going to be our weekly place for breakfast
Ordered, sat at the drive-up window for 10 minutes. Young man came to take a drink three times on the last time another lady was washing her hands they were taking. I knock on the window. The young man asked if I had been helped I explained no and that was his third time and not acknowledging me. He apologized saying this wasnt his normal station. While I sat there I could see the kitchen door where many people were in and out. He did go and found another lady that brought my order. I did after sitting there for 5 minutes run back over the black hose. An acknowledgment when you arrive would be nice even if its not your station would be nice.
Compared to the first time I went here, it was awful. And customer service was not great either. We ordered the chicken fried steak meal, 8oz ribeye meal, 2 kids meatloaf plates, and kids corn dog plate. The chicken fried steak was bland and mushy with the gravy being too salty. The ribeye was asked to be cooked medium, but it was cooked the medium-well. It was heavily seasoned and was super fatty. The meatloaf was honestly disgusting; so salty and it was topped with marinara thats used for mozzarella sticks. Our waitress got one of the kids orders wrong. She checked on our drinks one time. And seeing that most of the food wasnt eaten, didnt ask any questions. We will not be going back. It actually made my husband quite sad because he grew up loving this place.
Where do I begin?Quick seating, even in the middle of the day. A bread basket with rolls and sweet rolls to whet the appetite. A menu with a wide selection of food for very low prices. A polite and attentive waitress that provided excellent service (thanks, Tish), including thoughtfully bringing a glass of iced water with my hot chocolate. Delicious food with large portions.I am writing this as I finish off my boxed leftovers. And am enjoying them as much as I did in the restaurant. This place is a great memory of my visit to Texas!
Driving from New York City down to Mt Plymouth, FL then over to San Diego, California this place had the absolute best chicken fried steak of my life. We live in Midland for now, and I will gladly make a weekend trip to Amarillo to have this again.Service was a little crazy, but it’s a Saturday at lunch time. I didn’t expect anything more. Staff was friendly and inviting. Prices were beyond reasonable.Staff were all wearing masks. Plexiglass dividers between booths, and our table was perfectly spotless when we sat down.I wish I had more than 5 stars to give.
I have always loved this place until today. My family and I were seated for 15 min without being greeted or a drink order taken at the very least. It was not that busy at the time. The woman manager was just hanging out behind the front desk while another woman who looked at our table multiple times just continued to play with and stack menus. I am very curious if management has changed because I have never had this issue here. We left and I am not sure if we will be back.
We have always had a great meal at this place that is known for home cooked food but Sunday was terrible and Ive never said that on a review! The bacon was cooked on one end and almost raw on the other, the sausage patty was over-cooked and our country diced potatoes were honestly not edible. My main reason for this post is to let management know so they can an opportunity to correct an obvious problem. I also noticed for a Sunday it was not nearly as busy as it was on every Sunday weve dined there.
Lets just start with the fact every table was given complementary cinnamon rolls. They were the best pairing dunked in their delicious coffee. Joe kept it real and offered me just about anything I couldve wanted for breakfast. The western omelet was perfect. Thank you for an awesome breakfast.
Good food but please take some constructive criticism. Our biggest complaint was that we were surrounded by Fox News on every tv. Maybe you should consider have a neutral show on that’s not political . All your guest do not have your same views and hopefully you want everyone’s business and wouldn’t want anyone to feel uncomfortable. Also husbands potato were cold pancakes were Luke warm but waitress was really busy so not blaming her. Maybe I hire a few more? The breakfast special was a very good deal for all you got. The last thing was that I unfortunately got a peak in kitchen when I was headed towards the bathroom. Not impressive. Also no one in kitchen had mask or shield on or hair net. The out front staff were wearing masks and we appreciate that but a few were wearing them under the chin which helps absolute no one. I know you aren’t responsible for your guest but we were disappointed with the small amount of mask wearing. Covid isn’t over. We wear them for others and wish they would do the same for the us. The waitress was good and cheerful but was stretch thin. The sausage was excellent as most of the rest of meal was also just some things cold or Luke warm.
Waitress was inattentive and neglectful, we didn’t even receive our bread that comes before the meal until we asked a different waitress for it. She also never offered refills on our drinks. Fish tasted good but the hush puppies were burnt, other sides were kind of bland and we weren’t offered any sauce to go with our fish. So we ask if there’s any sauce for the fish and she says, all I have are tartar and lemon sauce. So we ask for the tartar sauce and it was old and an ugly yellow color so we didn’t even eat it. Bathroom smells really bad. Only good things were the fish and the cinnamon buns we got with the bread after we had to ask a different waitress for it even though we should have received it after we were seated. I think this place needs a health inspection, and some coaching from management to the waitstaff.
What an absolutely fantastic experience! We stopped at this charming little place on New Year’s Day on our way through Amarillo. From the time we walked in the door until the moment we left we were made to feel extra special! The staff was friendly, attentive, and efficient. They went above and beyond throughout our entire meal. The homemade cinnamon rolls that are brought to the table free of charge are delicious. The coffee is hot and fresh. The eggs are perfect. We loved this place and highly recommend.
We really enjoyed the breakfast. Got in fast and they bring out some phenomenal cinnamon rolls! The baby loved those and they kept him busy while we waited for our food. Huge portions and the food tasted great. I really liked the sausage. Its got a unique flavor and is great. The pancakes were fluffy and delicious. Overall, a great place for a family breakfast. Rather inexpensive for the amount of food you get.
This was my first time eating here. I had heard great things about this restaurant. They didnt disappoint, they brought homemade cinnamon rolls to our table to start our meal off. The breakfast burrito was amazing and huge. My friend had an omelette with homestyle potatoes and a biscuit and gravy. She said the biscuit was homemade as well as the gravy. I will definitely be back!
Last 2 trips have not been good. Food has not been served as ordered and last trip meat was uneatable. Full of grizzle and stringy could not cut it even with knife. After serving food waitress not seen again until we were sitting for sometime waiting for the check. Want be going back there .
Great home cooking!! This place has been around forever & has mostly stayed the same. The atmosphere was very clean & inviting, the staff were very friendly & helpful. The food was delicious & service was excellent! Brittney was a gem! Best waitress Ive had in so long. Bring your kids, family, or friends here!!!
Cannot rate the food. Was seated at at table but no server came by the table for fifteen minutes. Finally just walked out and let front clerk know. From the time we arrived until the time we left, five other groups were seated, drinks were delivered and orders taken. Worst service I have ever had and we will not be going back to this restaurant.
Great comfort food and very friendly staff. The waiter was very helpful and attentive without being overbearing, which is a skill that isnt always easy to learn. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are nice. The manager was visible on the floor and stopped by to make sure everything was fine with our meal and service. There was a crowd of people dining at that time bit the wait for seating was quick and the entrees came out pretty fast. They have a very knowledgeable staff and a great kitchen staff. My meal had a few extras and things taken off that I dont care for and it came out perfect. They definitely will have my return business!
In my humble opinion, this place is nothing to write home about. Its an okay place with a really cool rustic wooden floor and wooden ceiling beams. The food is ordinary and the service is simple but not great. Its not a place I would visit very often but probably a place you should visit once in a blue moon. The staff is friendly and the food is adequate. The pricing is not expensive and probably for a good reason.
Seated quickly, with a pleasant server. The food however... Our dinner rolls/biscuits tasted like rainwater. Mashed potatoes were heated by the gravy poured on top of them (really cold potatoes). Chicken fried steak was uninspired and a little bland. Green beans were good though, because, baconReally disappointing. Only the wait staff gets them to two stars. Id like to say it was probably a bad day, but too many eating options to make me want to return. Too bad, great decor and wait staff. Cant stress that enough
I have memories of eating here as a child with my family, and now I eat there with my children, my parents, my grandparents and my great grandmother. The establishment continues to offer friendly service and southern home style cooking. The building itself needs updating. The bathrooms are disgusting. The homemade rolls and cinnamon rolls are a great start to the menu. The chicken fried steak and chicken fried chicken are tender and flavorful. The vegetable plate is also nice for a healthier option, some vegetables are obviously cooked with a generous amount of butter and bacon! :-)
A good experience overall, good service and clean restaurant. The cauliflower rice bake was really tasty, and the gravy was on point. Free rolls and buns is a nice touch. However for chicken fried steak you need to pound that steak out super thin, so its not chewy. Or use a better cut of steak, which defeats the point of beating and frying it. My piece was as thick as a sirloin usually is, so it clearly wasnt pounded out enough. Tasty, but chewy, which isnt what you want. Prep chef needs to get sweaty and pound harder 😆
Update: Sept 2021Still awesome, complimentary cinnamon rolls and regular rolls; roast beef with carrots and potatoes are home cooking delicious. Breakfast are still great wirh good sized portions.July 2017Stopped here to eat while passing through Amarillo and pleased I did. Would eat here again. My wife had the lite portion of roast with roast potatoes and Mac & cheese. Of course we sample each others meals and both agreed it was good . Roast was very tender & the gravy gave it a bold taste. Mac & cheese was creamy and wouldve loved more.I had the chicken fried steak (lite portion) with mashed potatoes and broccoli & rice casserole. Chicken fried wasnt the compressed fake meat. Mashed potatoes real and homemade. Broccoli & rice casserole was good but different from what Im used too but would ordered it again.Save the best for last you get bread and homemade cinnamon rolls...yummy. Cant beat that after driving long hours. Price is very affordable and staff is great.
The Calico has become my go to place for breakfast when Im traveling through Amarillo. The food is always very good, the service is quick and friendly without being overbearing. This trip, what got them 5 stars was the fact that they were one of the few businesses to clear off their parking lot after the 8 of wet, heavy snow.
I waited about twenty mins to be seated. Which kinda stunk but was a good sign and well worth the wait. I had the Cinnabon’s with the intention of eating one and taking the rest home. Nope! I ate all four of them before my main dish came out. One thing I’d recommend maybe some house cream or somthing to dip them I other than that they where fantastic as is! My main dish was the chicken and waffles. I was discounted they didn’t come out lookin like a mason jar like the pictures online! But wow! They where amazing. The chicken was flaky and lightly breaded to perfection. Paired perfectly with the white gravy and the and waffles. Only problem I had was whether to dip the chicken and waffles in the syrup or white gravy. Both ways it taste amazing! Places like this is why I love Amarillo!
I absolutely love eating here. Its very reasonably priced. The service is always fast/friendly, the food is consistently good - its like going back in time. That said, it really is like going back in time and really could use some updates and or a power cleaning. The floors are always sticky and dingy, the tables and booths are worn and the bathrooms smell horrible. I really think this could be a gem for Amarillo like it used to be if someone decided to take the time and effort. Thats why I am only giving it three stars.
We had lunch here on a busy Saturday about 1pm. Service was great and their menu offers something for everyone. Our group had Waffles and Chicken, Chicken and Dumplings, Pulled Pork Sandwich with wet fries, corn dogs and mac and cheese for the little ones! The wet fries are gravy coated and they were fantastic. The waffles and chicken were huge portions. Everyone was definitely full and we had to go boxes. I would recommend this place very much and will visit again soon.
Im from Dallas, but come to Amarillo 3-4 times a year to visit family. Ive aways looked forward to coming here because their cheeseburger and fries were amazing.Last November, I ordered my usual medium rare cheeseburger, but the patty was thinner and it was well-done.Last night, again, I ordered the cheeseburger. Once again the patty was thin (just like a fast food joint) and it was well-done.One member of our party ordered fried chicken tenders, but was brought fried chicken livers instead. We were told that they were fixing their error, but she never got her meal. While nice and apologetic, our server was not on the ball, taking too long to bring food, refills, etc.Ive always looked forward to coming to Calico County, and have highly recommended it to others. I will no longer do so. Im not sure if this is under new management, but I think a lot needs to be fixed and changed before I return. Until then, I will be looking for another place to get a good burger, good food, and good service.
I would have given a 5 from my past eating experiences, however today was disgusting.I got there 7:30ish so I thought everything was going to be really fresh, boy was I let down!I ordered the Breakfast SpecialTwo Eggs Your Way Bacon (1) a Sausage (1). Choice of Country Potatoes or Hash Browns, Choice of Pancake, French Toast, Toast or Biscuit & Gravy Includes Coffee, Tea or Soft Drink Everyday $7.29 on-line menu, $8+ in restaurant. The eggs were good, Im pretty sure the bacon and sausage was leftover from yesterday, the hashbrowns were greasy and overcooked; they might have been leftover from yesterday too, and the French toast was pretty good.Service was adequate, not the usual great service Ive had in the past.I wanted to complain but more so I wanted the waitress to notice that I hadnt eaten anything except the eggs and french toast.I will go again but order the breakfast burrito I usually order.
No pride of ownership; the entry wasnt cleared from the snow and ice. The hostess wasnt welcoming at all the look on her face made me feel bad. No atmosphere inside. Food taste was ok, server was nice. The cinnamon rolls I loved with the coffee. I will try them again. Truthfully hadnt been in awhile.
We ate here today, service was not good. We waited for a while until the host seated us. We had seen her standing there, not sure what she was doing but she never said anything to us. Our waitress was good, no issues with her. When we went up to pay, the lady there was counting out money and never said anything to us. It took several minutes before she took our check. Lastly, a roach ran across our table. Not a good experience today.
Check your take out orders BEFORE you leave! Food is good, but 3 out of the past 5 times we have ordered take out, our order has been messed up. Once, instead of the two rib-eye steaks, we got breakfast food. The second time the mix up was less significant concerning vegetables. Today, the orders were wrong AGAIN! No omelet, no english muffin, neither of the two extra sides of bacon, and not the condiments we requested. Were considering not ordering take out from them ever again. It doesnt matter if the food is good if you dont get what you ordered.
My personal experience at this place has been spotty and underwhelming in the past, but today the food was so good that i feel that this restaurant deserves 5 stars. I ordered the Calico County Deluxe Bacon Cheeseburger expecting an average mid-end burger, but was amazed when it came out exactly as I ordered, being medium rare. Not only that, but it was very juicy and well seasoned. The root beer came out in a chilled mug and was comparable to the A&W drive in as far as quality goes, which is saying a lot.TL;DRIf your experience at this place hasnt been all that great in the past, I suggest giving it another try.
Yesterday was my first visit to this restaurant during a lunch stop In Amarillo along my road trip to Red River NM. I had the chicken fried steak lunch special, and it was a good sized meal. It was what I think of when I want southern cooking. The pot roast carrots were perfect. The service and atmosphere were easy going and made our group of guys feel right at home.
Hugely disappointing! The sausage patties were dry and obviously frozen. Everything we ordered was very mediocre and I cant say it is any better than McDonalds, sad. Also Im not sure if its a Texas thing, but they had no clue what gluten-free bread was or the concept of vegetarian.
Great prices for great food. Next time I go to Texas I will go back to this restaurant. Their country potatoes are amazing. Whenever I go out to a breakfast place I always taste the eggs to see if I need to season them, but here I did not have to season them at all. Kudos to the amazing chef who prepared my food. Keep up the good work.
Went to eat lunch today at 3:30pm on 11/23/19. We were not impressed. My fiance and my food was decent, but the corn dog we ordered for my two year old still had liquified batter on the inside, and the hot dog looked under cooked, we had it sent back and the second one came back the same way. How hard is it to cook a corn dog? We have never had a problem with Calico County before, but this is also the first time we have went during afternoon hours. We will not be making a return trip here, at least not in the afternoon.
I am having a hard time having a lot of faith in the restaurant I have gone to for years. Tonight I had enchiladas which were seasoned with just chili powder I think. Not really good. The cat fish was great according to another in my group. I have ordered take out from here a couple times and gotten half of the order both times, once no gravy for chicken fried steak or the mashed potatos... hmmm.
Good food, after one-hour wait while staring at open booths the whole time because they didnt hire enough servers. Dad had to leave before we were seated, and my blood glucose was dangerously low. None of my sides ever arrived, but the chili I ordered was good. Tip was automatically added, not optional or removable from my ticket. Not going back.
They have the best food but I feel there is restructuring that can be done so the Employees are able to shine their brightest! I had an issue with an online order and they were extremely quick to resolve the issue. They even gave me extra bacon!! Very kind and family centered restaurant!
Calico County has been around for over 30 years and its changed owners a few times, most recently as well. The restaurant hasnt changed and would not be on the latest style fancy dance restaurant list. However, its HUGE inside and accommodate large parties of diners. The menu is at least 8 pages with daily specials. Every dish that Ive eaten since the early 70s has been delicious, but lets talk chicken fried steak with country gravy....The steak is huge and the baked potato I get with it is perfectly cooked. I get steamed cabbage as a side or the fried okra....delicious! It truly feel as if the food is going to come out my ears. Occasionally Ill get the chicken and dumplings which is an excellent choice. But Sundays, first come, first served you can order and eat a most delicious turkey dinner...just like Thanksgiving. Once, they had left overs on Monday and I snatched it up before anyone else in the restaurant could. Theres a red headed and bearded young man who is the best waiter there but Ive never had a bad waiter/waitress. Still, Red with his big smile and friendly attitude and knowledge of the food/menu is my first choice.
My family and I came for breakfast around 9am. We were seated instantly and taken to a table in the back left of the restaurant. Our waitress was unbelievably rude. We ended up asking for a new waiter/waitress and I think one of the managers waited on us, and he was so kind. The food was great and came out quickly! At the end of our meal our previous waitress was quick to come try and get us out of her booth while we were trying to sign a tip over to HER, even though she didnt help us in the least. Not sure when or if we will be back anytime soon. We can get great food elsewhere without being treated like scum by the waitstaff.
It may be under new ownership, but its still pretty much like I remember it as a kid: homestyle food that really tastes like homemade food. I always get the hamburger steak or chicken fry, but I hear they have amazing burgers as well. Whats really great is the sides and veggies all seem fresh, and their gravy tastes like your grandma made it with real drippings and not from a box. Some of the names of their dishes have changed, but the quality hasnt. One minor complaint: They could use more wait staff. The staff is always super friendly but sometimes feels like they have 1-2 people running around doing everything and. So you might have wait a bit for a check. Dont come if youre in a hurry.
Well not sure if the food is any good or not. Been sitting here 10 minutes without anyone waiting on us. Not so much as water. Finally the hostess took our drink order., 15 minutes now, finally the waitress arrives she doesnt have a pen to take our order. Left us again. Finally comes back, takes our order. We will see. Sure isnt like it used to be. Doubt if we will be back. The only reason 2 stars are given is because the hostess is trying her best.
We really enjoyed our meal. We had chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes w/cream gravy. The only down side is we had coffee with our meal and Allen found a plastic food cup in cup with coffee on top. He did not notice it until he drank it almost completely. The waitress was very apologetic and immediately replaced his cup but that took the taste from Allen for more coffee. Outside of that the meal was spot on and we will be back. Just not for coffee. LOL
Don’t Recommend I left a nice tip after eating, left the table & walked towards the doors noticed my wallet was still in the booth, Sadly (not even a minute) my food had been picked up AND so was my wallet.Called 3 times to ask if they could look at cameras & hung up on me everytime after putting me on hold.
Calico County is usually quite good -- until it has an oops. This can be anything from overcooked food to fried chicken strips when grilled was ordered. They always fix the problem, but the mistakes happen a little too frequently to earn five stars. But usually you will get good home cooking food. They have a good selection of vegetables. I dont usually get their all-day breakfasts, but the times I have, they have been good.If you like Cracker Barrel, you would probably like this local restaurant. And their free cinnamon rolls are excellent. If you want them as a dessert, let folks know when you are seated to hold off on bringing them out.

2022-06-07Food taste, restaurant cleanliness & style was great. But the best was the service ⭐️. I’ve been to places where waitresses don’t care but that’s not the case here. Everybody was kind and helpful with the menu questions I had. The owner was sitting behind us and made us feel welcomed, also he made sure we had cinnamon rolls for the road for free. I was traveling and they made me feel like home. I’m definitely returning for another great experience.

2022-01-25My server Ashley M was on point. Food was amazing, not too sweet or salty. Large portions. Their homemade lemonade is super refreshing. Im gonna go again for their lunch/dinner for sure.

2022-06-17Decent home cooking restaurant. They need to be a little less heavy handed with the pepper. Was very heavily on everything i got. Big portions of everything.

2022-04-17The food is amazing! Better than a steak house! Their chicken fried steak is my favorite! Breaded just right and the gravy definitely gives it a boost of home. This place has all 5 stars for me. Its country and home cooked. No processed tastes!

2021-08-22We were very unimpressed today. Usually we go in and eat. The past three times we’ve gone in we’ve had to sit at our table and wait for about 15-20 minutes to even get seen by our waiter. So today we ordered to go and they forgot an order of pancakes, the potions were not comparable to what is typically on the plates. The hash browns were undercooked and eggs were over cooked. Tried calling about 6 times and no one would answer. Definitely was not worth the $30 we spent and we probably won’t be going back. Plus the wait for the food itself was 45 minutes on top of another 15 minutes waiting in line to pickup. So we waited an hour for poorly done food.

2022-04-12What a breakfast! We ordered the huge breakfast platter and shared it. Fluffy, gently but nicely seasoned scrambled eggs. Deep fried hash browns (taste & texture just like shoe string potatoes). Coffee in a carafe. Little cinnamon rolls served while your order is being made (more of a biscuit style dough but tasty) Homey comfortable dining area and welcoming, friendly staff.

2021-12-22Ive had some wonderful experiences here and a couple that were disappointing. The wonderful ones include the fish special at lunch, the Irish stew even though it is beef rather than lamb, and they are experts at fixing both beef and chicken liver if you like that, which I do. The chicken and dumplings was excellent also. The disappointments were the chicken pot pie which tasted like it came out of a can and both the chicken fried steak and the chicken fried chicken, surprisingly since I had heard good things about them from others. That may be just a matter of my personal taste. Im not crazy about their side dishes because they are mostly mixtures rather than vegetables in there pure form and they seem quite salty which is not good for those of us that are watching our sodium. One of the most fun things is when they bring the rolls at the beginning which is usually at least a half dozen small rolls, half of them cinnamon spirals and half of them regular biscuits. All are delicious. They have a steak special for $12.99 and I did get that once and it was very good. Sometimes the service is great and sometimes not so great but Ive had mostly good experiences with the service especially if they arent super busy which they were the other night for sure. The restaurant was almost entirely full. Calico county has been in Amarillo for many years and it is a local favorite. I rarely make it here for breakfast although I do believe they have all day breakfast so I suppose I could have it even if I didnt get here till evening. All day breakfast is a plus in my book since Im not an early starter.

2022-06-03You can get a real rib eye steak for breakfast. They offer a generous serving of bacon as well as three eggs cooked to your specifications. The coffee cup never seemed to get low and was refilled continously by an attentive server. Breakfast is available all day,This place is worth your time to stop and enjoy a great meal at a reasonable price. The cooks do a wonderful job on all of the items, but I want to especially compliment them on the steak. Why bother cooking at home? This place is great!
