I haven’t been in the store yet but I called them to find out about horse leads and Antonio was so helpful and friendly. I was just calling to find out if they have them and general pricing and he went and pulled a few from the shelf for me to give me information on a variety of the ropes and prices. Great customer service from him. I will definitely be going there to purchase what I need because of it.
I dont know what Id do without Callahans. Theyve been a supportive force in my life for the past four years. Everything you possibly need - they have it. Theyve helped us with our cat, with pet birds, with farm animals. Theyre really great folks. You feel cared for and respected with each visit. An example of this caring tendency came up recently when one of my chickens got an eye infection. They helped diagnose the issue over the phone, and when I came into the store led me around so that I could find all the necessary items - syringes, antibiotics, electrolytes. The whole team is knowledgeable and kind. The cherry on top of the whole experience at Callahans is that their goods are very well priced - but in most instances you cant find a price comparison because theyre the only folks who have the stuff you need! Callahans is a real treasure.
We had great service! The woman who helped us told us a lot about chickens and what we need for them. She helped us make an educated decision when we decided to purchase chicks. They answered all of our questions and were very helpful. I would definitely recommend coming here.
I got 10 chicks that were supposed to be hens. FOUR ended up being roosters. They wouldnt refund me or trade for hens. They took one rooster back and gave me nothing. Now I heard from other people they traded them back for hens. I wasnt even ever rude but I dont like to be treated unfairly. I will no go back for anymore gardening or poultry needs. Overpriced anyways. Also, it was my first time with chickens ever and I know its not going to be as easy for me to add hens to my flock. Thanks for screwing me.
We all love to go to this country store. Just moved to my 9 acre small farm and we bought all our chickens and other small livestock from here. The manager or owner not sure what he is to the store is very helpful when I needed advice on the chicks we bought there two weeks ago. Saturdays are fun they have live music and animals on display when you walk in. Bathrooms are also very clean!! Loved this store for many years😊
Tried exchanging a pair of children’s boots that were purchased toward the beginning of the pandemic and then we went into lockdown, Making the 45 day return policy void. LITERALLY was just trying to get a bigger size for my daughter, didn’t want my money back, boots had never been worn. They just sat in my trunk until I had a chance to exchange them. My mother tried to exchange them and was originally told yes by the cashier and then the manager interjected and would not allow the EXCHANGE to take place. I tried calling to try to sort things out as my mother does not speak English very well. The manager was rude when she answered the phone, wouldn’t let me speak, and just the lack of unprofessionalism is the reason that this will be my first and last time purchasing ANYTHING from here ever again.
This place offered a great free afternoon with the kids. I had to pick up some things for my bees and this was recommended as the place in town that I would bee able to get them. Took the kids with me and they were able to watch or play with all the live animals (rabbits, chicks, hens, goats, and roosters). They also had a live band that was pretty good.
Once you get inside the store it is well done, however many were waiting in a line that they did not have to. The line was for chicks and you had to get a number inside before you could be eligible to be called, however that was not made clear and many were waiting in line without numbers or were waiting in line for things other than chicks.
A family-owned general + farm store staffed with genuine, pleasant people ready to help. Met one of the Callahans on my first visit! This place has an UNBELIEVABLE variety of merchandise. Everything from housewares + home goods (tortilla warmers!), local foods (honey), kitchen appliances, grills, hardware, lawn care, veterinary + livestock, leather saddles, and ANIMALS! It is the kind of small town, sells-it-all, general store that used to be common in rural, medium-size towns (before Walmart). It is a cramped, quirky, and unexpectedly wonderful place. Even if you do not need anything, visit this place + browse. I guarantee you will end up buying something unexpected.
Everything you need for homesteading is here! Chickens, roosters, rabbits, goats, feed for all your furry and feathered friends. Vegetable seedlings, seeds, fertilizers, grasses. Clothes, boots, kitchen items, food storage. And the list goes on. Fresh layers every Tuesday, and fresh chicks on Thursdays.
Misleading when you have to get things from the back. They dont always give you want you want then act like they dont know what youre talking about when you say something. They even sold a friend of mine that didnt know any better a rooster instead of a hen. She wanted to learn and do right and they took advantage of her because it was a silly chicken they probably had a hard time getting rid of. Be mindful of what you want need and expect when you go here. If they can take an inch youll probably lose a mile before you notice it
Callahans is one of the best places to go to watch Austin weird intermingle with Texas country. This is because its one of two places in town (along with Buck Moore, an equally awesome place) that supports the backyard farming community in town, as well as being a good general store for those others who you would expect to see there.I suppose that I must identify myself as one of those backyard farmers that I spoke of earlier. Ive got chickens in the back yard and will soon have some ducks. While Buck Moore is a little closer to me, and therefore is the place I go for feed, Callahans has the selection. Usually they have 6-8 breeds of chicken and with any luck, a selection of ducks as well. Definitely need to take a walk out the side door and into the warehouse area where you can find a selection of fully grown hens and a few roosters, dove, and other various overflow fauna. They also keep their hay out there, which I use for nesting material.Saturdays are the best day to go out. Usually they have some sort of live music, BBQ out front, and additional animals. Last Saturday, they had goats, rabbits, and peafowl. Theyve had pigs before as well. Just about anything you could want to grow (unless you want a cow, and then they probably have a connection). Be warned: parking on Saturdays can be a bit hectic, its a popular place.Theyre also a full True Value, stocked with a random assortment of hardware, gardening supplies, and a large selection of western clothing.
Callahans is a super fun place to visit. It is a local business and they provide top notch customer service and a wide array of products. I always shop here before looking online or shopping a national brand - you should too! Go local, Callahans is worth your time and their prices are good too!
Great place. Like an old large feed store . Got all your veterinary needs like supplements mineral blocks etc. Different hays cattle and horse pellets and oats etc. Milk bottles. Dewormers etc. Got a large selection of thinks like chickens and ducks turkeys and Guineas.A lot of novelty items for the house. Seeds and plants like tomatoes potatoes eyes onion etc.and different type of trees like citrus right now. You need to check it out. They have a lot of unique amusing things that can be given as gifts and I doubt you can get out of there without wanting to buy something.
I love the store but the staff is the reason I love it, Mike the manager is great and knows his stuff inside to out he has help me many times through the years and Vicky, she is great always willing to help and she is a very smart woman when it come to animals, she has saved two of mine my vet was out of town and she was right there for me you cant get that kind of treatment from any other feed store. They will always has my business.
Last week I was shopping at Callahans when I noticed my car key had fallen out of my purse. It was not far from closing time and I was not sure what I would do without my key as I had no replacement. I was deeply appreciative and very impressed with the employees at the store. The employees searched everywhere with me until one of the ladies found the key lodged between two slats in the floor near where I had been admiring the wind chimes. What a great group. I plan to shop there again soon. You do not see this effort everywhere . I thank them again for their helpfulness.
Their chickens were held in terrible conditions, - filthy water, unkempt pen, dead hen in the holding pen. The two which were looked over by their staff member and deemed healthy were in fact full of lice and diagnosed with several other problems, one of which was MG which is highly contagious to other birds. They had to be culled 😭Management was aware of the conditions of the hens at time of the sale. They blamed it on the rooster being rough on the hensGetting your money back will never remove the memory of a living creature suffering
One of my favorite stores in Austin. Its a local staple full of whatever you need. Literally. Farm and ranch supplies, home supplies, cast iron ovens, pearl snaps, boots, kitchen gadgets, goats, chickens, and more. Plus the good folks that work there are knowledgable and very friendly. On Saturdays they have a live band playing. For friends that visit Austin, this is my MUST visit recommendation. It never disappoints.
More expensive than Elgin Feed Store and Tractor Supply in reference to Horse Feed, supplements, grooming items and wound care supplies. Overall this store has a wide variety of things to buy, tools, tack, livestock feed, animals, clothes, kitchenware, etc. But if youre trying to save a dollar, go elsewhere.
I dont even know how long this place has been around, but I remember going as a kid when my parents needed gardening stuff, canning supplies, deer corn, etc. A true general store - their selection runs the gamut: clothes, toys, kitchen goods, seeds, feed of all sorts, tools, souvenirs, chicks, rabbits, etc. etc. etc. One of the best side effects of getting chickens is that I now have an excuse to visit Callahans every month or two for 50lb bags of laying feed and crushed oyster shell (and whatever other necessities I stumble across while Im there). This would be a great place to bring out of state friends for a taste of both classic Texas and Austin Weird. The staff working the floor are always super helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. The only ding I can give is that the staff working the checkout can come off as surly, and stand offish.
Chicks have pasty butt. And not a little.. A LOT. We are talking fecal matter the size of the chicks head blocking its vent. Chicks with prolapsed vents from excessive fecal matter. Manager was unavailable. Next in line seemed to not care much. And the person handling the chicks, when shown birds in poor shape, put a new hatch under cold water and ripped the fecal matter off its behind instead of soaking off in warm water and treating. Its all about making money... isnt it....
We bought our first 4 chickens from Callahans about a year ago and they all lived. We had to rehome 1 of them because it turned out to be a. rooster (even though the associate assured us it was a pullet when we purchased it) and still have the remaining 3 that are adults now. We were very happy with them so decided to go back there for more. We started out by purchasing 2 live chicks from Callahans and less then 5 days later they both died. They did replace them with different chicks when I went back in to discuss this and purchased 2 additional chicks bringing the total number of chicks obtained from Callahans to 6. 2 of them died the next day after we brought them home. 1 of them held on for over a week, but it was a struggle keeping it alive. She was a tough little fighter but succumbed in the end. Her wings and legs/feet grew but her body did not. We looked up this condition online to find out what we could about this and found articles about something called Failure to Thrive which is a genetic disorder. The chicks body does not grow even though the wings and legs/feet do. Their bodies cannot digest food properly or absorb nutrients from the food eaten. We had added the Save A Chick electrolyte and probiotic to their water with the 2nd batch of chicks in hopes that would help them survive. Not even that helped, out of SIX chicks only ONE survived. We are keeping a close eye on the one left and hope it will survive to maturity. Save yourself the disappointment and heartache of having these fuzzy little babies die in your hands if youre looking to purchase chicks.....look somewhere else.
I went here to buy dog food (yes, my picky pet eats designer food!). But I stayed for the fun. Never before have I seen a general store/hardware store/feed store that also had live country music, a resident pig wandering around, awesome vintage-style kitchen appliances (we are talking new fridges and stoves that look like theyre right out of the 1940s!) and a full selection of mens and womens workwear, Western attire, boots and hats. And thats all before you get to the chicken room and the rest of the critters. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE coming here!
There is a woman who works in the business office next to the store who has an additude. An employee who fill my order took my receipt ,I got home and realized no bill of purchase . Called store she got my Info to mail it , then never mailed it , Icalled and the same call got angry when I told her I did not think she ever intended to mail it . I had to go over there and get more additude from her.
I love Callahans! I come here for dog vaccinations (they sell bordetella and DHLPPC shots for cheap, so I do them myself) when I need them, and end up wandering around every section for hours.Maybe I should be embarassed, but I totally squeal over their piggies and their chicks and their little bunnies every time.

2021-08-03Such an awesome business and is what built Austin. They are the backbone of the Montopolis community of Austin, Texas. If you are a animal and country western lover, this place is fabulous!! It is even a tourist attraction. Our grandchildren beg to stop when they know we are close by. They are also hard to drag away from there.

2022-03-29Callahans is the real deal, with staff who are helpful and know what they are talking about. Curtis in the feed/poultry section always gives me good advice regarding my hens and now my pet serama and bantam chicks. Hes helped successfully problem solve backyard chicken health, feed, housing, etc. Excellent customer service, wide variety of product. 10 stars

2018-08-19Summary: A super neat experience with tons of inventory and friendly people. The details:Nestled in the ranch lands of South east Austin is one gem of a hardware, tack, farm and ranch store. On Saturdays livestock greets you at the door with live music inside the storeThe reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is simply because of the prices. You can get a lot of the stuff elsewhere slightly cheaper however you would be challenged to find some of the products anywhere else as they really have some truly unique items. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the place is very kid friendly. Its obvious that they welcomefamilies.Definitely worth a stop if you are in the area.

2020-01-18Interesting place. Seems like a farm/hardware store that expanded to tourist stuff. Its pretty cool but the clothes seem overpriced (though there is a sizeable clearance area).

2018-05-19I love going to Callahans. I cant my chicken supplies from them. And I always check out the baby chicks they have for sale. Their staff is very knowledgeable and very friendly and helpful. And its also cool that the other patrons or customer are friendly. Walking through those doors is like taking a step back in time and connecting with my roots in a small East Texas town where I grew up. They have a great selection. Their prices are reasonable as well.
