This was my first time eating here. The fried pickles were amazing! I have never had this before. I ordered the pork chop dinner with the loaded baked potato. The pork chop was good, but the potato was cold, so cold the butter wouldnt melt, same with the person I was eating with. It actually looked like yesterdays leftovers. I would try this place again, but probably for breakfast.
Attempting to find an alternative to the egg and I, we chose to try Cartwrights Ranch house cafe due to mentions of their fantastic biscuits and gravy during a Google search. I wasnt disappointed and neither was the family.Does a Philadelphia steak omelette talk to your taste buds? Wife and daughter ordered those with their customized sides as pictured and were very pleased with authenticity of filling and texture of eggs.I had to have three eggs, ranch potatoes and biscuits with sausage gravy so I went all the way with the Big Bend. It has additions of cheese, ham, sausage and bacon piled high. Good lord! Im a hearty eater when I have an opportunity to take my time at breakfast, which is why I only get it on the weekends. This did not disappoint in areas of quality or quantity. I did find the gravy to be a little thin for my taste and lacking flavor, which could be corrected with a little salt and pepper but its to my own and was somewhat made up for with a generous portion of sausage within. The restaurant is located on Elm Street just on the edge of the square so you may have a little more of a walk after parking than in a lot but certainly not a big deal and you get to walk past a few interesting local shops.Wait staff was very knowledgeable about their menu, prompt in service and our particular waitress was sweet and personable. You wont be disappointed if you go in hungry or are looking for a diversified menu with healthy items as they literally have it all.
Amazing burgers something about them makes them better I think its the buns. No clue but I would choose this hunger over any other burger place in town easy. Though the restaurant is a lil old and run down looking and feeling but dont let that bother you their food is great. Onions a little big though.
Emilee was our server and was a darn good one. The food was excellent, the chicken fried chicken was juicy and the crispy outside was perfectly cooked. The mac and cheese was pretty bland, but a little salt and pepper and it was good. This seat yourself resturaunt is becoming one of my favorites in this area!
My favorite place to eat on the Square, and one of my Top 3 Denton restaurants overall! The food is always top-notch: great quality, large portions, and quite tasty! The all-day breakfast is the no-brainer for me. Friendly staff and a great location. Highly recommended! Make sure you try the chicken-fried steak; its the best in town (if not anywhere)!
The place was very busy, the service was good and the food was tasty. My child could not decide between the chocolate cream pancakes and chicken tenders. The waitress said she could get a couple of tenders and the pancakes on one order. My child was happy and we paid a small upcharge for the chicken.
Came for lunch. We had chicken fried steak and hamburger steak plates. Huge portions. Chicken fried steak was lightly breaded.. mashed potatoes were creamy and peppered..green beans had great flavor. Hamburger steak had a great taste and was smothered in brown gravy with mushrooms and onions. Mac and cheese was creamy cheesy good. Every dish came out piping hot. Thank you. Excellent service.
This place has some of the best food on the square! Good prices, hearty portions and our waiter was outstanding. I wish I could remember his name atm to give him props in black and white. He assured us substitutes werent a problem and a ordered a HUGE breakfast burrito with chicken fried chicken in side and chili con queso on top. This thing made me feel feelings I didnt know I had. Thanks partner for hooking it up. Ive yet to ever be disappointed here.
I wanted some Chicken and Waffles and this place was supposed to have some. Sadly it was not on the menu. So we tried some Chilaquiles and Huevos Rancheros. Sadly I wish we had hunted down some Chicken and Waffles. The Chilaquiles were dry and didnt have much flavor. I did like the OJ that I ordered with the meal. The eggs that were ordered with the Huevos Rancheros were supposed to be over medium and were somewhat over easy. Oh and the restroom could have used a cleaning smelled a lot like urine. The service was good and friendly, tho they did forget to give us utensils.
We called in 3 orders. I had to park 2 blocks away & hike in. When I got there I foolishly forgot to check the bags b/c I was put off by the lack of parking. To be fair, that is a city of Denton issue. When I got all the way home we discovered they hadnt even put my sons meal in. So I bought him pizza. Our food was good, but Ill probably not go back, its too much trouble to get to and the food isnt outstanding. Not bad at all , just not outstanding.
The food is excellent, that is when you can get service. Tried to dine in today 07/21/2022 at around 3PM (a notoriously slow time), unfortunately the waitress decided to take a break after delivering the drinks to our table and never came back for an order. We had to leave after 15 minutes of absolutely no service while the rest of the woke staff consisting of approximately 4 other servers ignored us completely. On my way out I saw her setting there dazed and confused. To the owners, please hire people that actually want to work there, or your business will suffer if you dont. Your business missed out on a $90 tab this time. She was the extra heavy girl probably exhausted from toting all that weight around, there is no reasonable excuse for the rest of the staff. Delight the customer, there is never a wrong time to do the right thing.
Pretty good place to try to work with you nice friendly staff during the weekend their food could be better. During the week their food is delicious I guess thats because theres they have more time to dedicate to the food and not have to make it so fast because you have so many people waiting to be seated they probably could use a bigger space.
We just the opportunity to eat here again. Great again. They are doing a great job staying safe. Glad to have them open.Gravy was excellent! Everything we ordered was awesome. The portions ate huge and a great value. If you are looking for a good breakfast spot look no further. Service was super friendly. Emilee was fantastic.
Storefront restaurant with an old west theme on the previous Denton County courthouses square. Friendly waitress sat and patiently went over the menu with an elderly customer. Above average diner fare with breakfast available all day. Expect to drive around a bit to find parking.
A great diner in the historic downtown of Denton . Very authentic food , they have it all , from great omelette to pancakes to fantastic steak burgers to drinks . Our waiter was Jennifer and was very helpful and freindly . Highly recommended place and great atmosphere.
I miss this place! They have the best mac and cheese burger(my favorite)! My husband and I used to come here a lot with our friends when attending UNT. Everything is super delicious, the staff was always friendly and hospitable. We’ll be back here if we’re in the area again.
Without a doubt, my favorite breakfast restaurant in Denton, TX! There are other great places, but Cartwrights wins with its biscuits, its choices, and its hospitality! If its eggs and bacon, you cant go (wait for it) wrong at CartWRIGHTs. (that ones free, Cartwrights)
Holy moly! This place has the biggest and best chicken fry in Texas. The diner is cozy and staff is super friendly. They really make you feel right at home. The appie portions are huge!!! I had the rib eye and it was seasoned to perfection and cooked perfectly. Tender and juicy. The beer is served in an icy cold mug.
Great spot to get a quick breakfast! They got $4 mimosas which were actually pretty good!Good people! The wyat earp is the food I got and it was good. Also get blueberries in your pancake! SmacksMy server was very nice!Food was fairly quick!I think this is the best breakfast Dentons dusty city can offer!
Best breakfast in North Texas! My wife and were in Denton and found Cartwright’s while driving around the Square and it lived up to the Google map reviews. Great food, friendly and attentive staff, and a nice Texas atmosphere. Lots of choices, lots of flavor - I got the Migas scrabble with Chorizo and it was amazing. Looking forward to going back to try their lunch menu!
I love this place! They offer many amazing and from-scratch options. I cant get enough of their Arnold Palmers and the chicken fried chicken -- it is an experience! The mac and cheese tasted a little different from the last time I visited, but it was great, nonetheless. Staff is very attentive and friendly, especially our server Emily!! Will be coming back :)
I always get the ckn fried steak 😋 but this time I was unaware that they closed at 3pm on Sundays. Very disappointed in the food over all. I even woke up with bubble gut from the food. Ckn fried steak, mashed potatoes, fried okra & gravy. Never again will I order at closing time. 😒 just sucks we live so far away from this location and just happened to be in the neighborhood at this time
The pot roast was nottttttt pot roast ..it was a slab of meat so tough we didnt eat it and it was cold... the toast underneath was barely toasted and soggy .. the baked potato was cold.. it wouldnt even melt the butter or cheese..but the rolls and the ranch were great
Ordered the CFS (Chicken Fried Steak if you’re not from around these parts), full not half portion, with a side of fried okra and black-eyed Peas: dang that full order is a huge piece of meat, pounded thin with a light batter that did not slide off when you cut into the CFS.The okra appeared to be freshly battered and fried, not out of a bag, and the black-eyed peas were tasty.Staff are friendly and attentive without being annoying.
We ordered 5 meals for the first time order. Two included biscuits and gravy and one was chicken fried chicken. This was delivered by Uber. Unfortunately none of the three meals included gravy. Biscuits and gravy included no GRAVY. My husband drove to the restaurant to pick up said gravy and returned to already cold food. They made up for it by providing a buy one get one half off coin (pic) , They obviously missed what a failure this “delivery dinner” at 830 was! Like to shop local but maybe not here.
I have been to Cartwrights many times and have never been let down. I always recommend this place to family and friends when they are looking for a great place to eat. Its right in the heart of Denton so if you are looking to eat and have fun afterwards this place is 10/10. Sometimes the servers arent all smiles but we all have our days so I get it.
This place has amazing food and normally I have no issues yet today my husbands chicken friend chicken was not cooked fully. And the service here is terrible. I had to flag down a waitress just to get my drink order. The table next to us had been waiting for over 25 minutes without even getting drinks. When I ordered a sweet tea I got a cup full of ice with a little bit of tea. The reason they gave me was they were close to closing and a big table had come in so they werent going to be making more. You would think the server would have informed me of this as I placed my drink order. Its time to fire all the employees who dont care about their job. Leaving it up to the customer to flag you down is incredibly rude. When we informed her that his chicken was undercooked the waitress had an attitude They even had the nerve to come back and ask how it was under cooked. My husband was a Sous Chef for years. There should be no pink in the chicken at all and she felt the need to argue. I will never come back to this location again. The establishment off of Dallas drive is much better the service is better and the food is always done right unlike this one. I pray my husband does not get poisoning from the chicken that he ate this morning.
One of my favorite places to eat. Love the food and the staff. The only problem I am having has been recently. In the last two months I’ve been in for breakfast three different times. Each time my bill prices did not reflect the pricing listed on the menu. They’ve apologized and fixed it but it’s continued to happen the last three times. This morning the waiter came back and said the manager said that the 50 Cent up charge was because the cheesy grits are $.50 extra. It doesn’t reflect that it’s $.50 more on the menu anywhere. The only reference to an up charge is for sausage gravy versus cream gravy. But it’s just not the cheesy grits/or that it’s $.50 extra. I’ve been overcharged $1.50 on one ticket in the past. Me and my friend ordered the exact same breakfast and mine was $1.50 more than his was. They did fix it when I brought it to the attention. But I can’t help wonder how many people who don’t check their prices don’t realize they get overcharged. I strongly request management seriously look at this issue and either update your menu or fix your system so that customers aren’t scammed $.50 to $1.50 per ticket. Again staff service environment food excellent. This is my only beef.
Had dinner there 12 Nov, around 8PM. Did not have to wait for a table, the staff was quick, polite and very helpful. Dinner was great, chicken fingers and chicken fired steak. Great experience, and a special note for the dinner rolls, they were excellent, of course I wouldnt know as my daughter claimed mine right after eating hers.Thank you for a wonderful dinner and the perfect ending to our campus visit at UNT.
It was such a long long day!!! Exhausted and starving I chose not to cook per my usual and tried this place. I knew what I wanted. I got basically what I wanted. Green beans have pork in them so I skipped that. Got some chicken fried chicken...loads of gravy just as I asked...enough to spare. Cole slaw...2 out of 5 stars for that. Mashed potatoes and more gravy and mac n cheese. Mac n cheese was runny but tasted perfect. It was perfect though not what I expected. Everything was so good from the fast accurate and warm service to the food that really hit the spot and sent me home with enough to do it again tomorrow. Emily P was my server and tonights dinner was a perfect ending to a glorious and long day.
If you want delicious comfort food and a busy but laid back, friendly old style Texas cafe you need to eat at Cartwright’s Ranch House on the Square in Denton. Had the catfish for dinner and it was awesome. Wife enjoyed a delicious steak. They are also a favorite breakfast spot.
Nice spot downtown. Has a cracker barrel vibe. Decent prices, food is good but nothing extraordinary. I like the availability and comfort of the chairs. Being a bigger dude its nice. They have plenty of waitstaff, must be a good place to work. First time going there today 9/9/21.
Every time I am in Denton I stop at Cartwrights Ranch House. The location is on the square and there is so much to see there. The food is always delicious. Its real comfort food. The sweet tea is just right for Texas. Sweeeeeet! The Mac and Cheese, WOW! Get it on everything. We got the Mac N Cheese Burger and Chicken Fried Steak meal with Mac and Cheese. Go get you some.
Very disappointed in the food! The brown gravy tasted like bad TV dinner gravy and all the food was just not good. If you are a person with low expectations for the flavor and texture of your food you will enjoy this. For those whom stopped enjoying cafeteria food in grade school run, dont walk, but run to anywhere else to waste $70.
This was our first time here. We were very excited to try this place. First, we were placed at a table in front of a window that had an extreme amount of sunlight coming through and the glare was ridiculous. We asked to move and were moved..so problem solved. No, I was wrong. We ordered our food and drinks. Everything was fine. Waitress was nice enough, until she dripped enough hot coffee on my daughter to burn her leg and didnt even notice her repeatedly saying ow that burns. Then people who were sat and ordered after us received food first. Then we received our food. My hash browns and eggs were cold. Two pieces of my bacon were barely cooked. The other piece was so old and burnt it was actually bloated and looked liked it was picked out of a grease trap (I will post a picture). I wasnt even quite sure it was bacon for a minute. That was it. We paid and left. My girls and I did not finish that food and will never return.
I never write reviews but in this case its necessary in order to explain the absolute joy that my taste buds experience and satisfaction my stomach encountered. I ordered the fried catsfish with fried okra and mac-n-cheese. Each piece of catfish was harty and flakey. The okra was cooked to perfection and the mac-n-cheese could only be described as dairy gold sent from the cow gods. My fiance ordered the mac n cheese burger. It was perfectly cooked and the sweet bun complimented the flavor in such a way that one might even say was heavenly. Our waitress was a true gem and the wait was impressive considering what we had in store for our palet.
They have all you can eat catfish after either 4 or 5 p.m. for less than $13. The catfish is very, very good! You can get it blackened, grilled, or fried. It was so good I couldnt wait for it to cool down and burned the roof of my mouth just a little bit but it was worth it! It comes out piping hot and very fresh excellent fish and very friendly servers! I will definitely be back!ONE SUGGESTION: Please stock COCKTAIL SAUCE - goes great with hushpuppies and the catfish..I would have given it 5 out of 5 otherwise...5-28-18:. Was there a week ago and still no cocktail sauce... ☹️4-23-22 Was back on this date, still no cocktail sauce. I would love it for the hushpuppies!! The food tastes great without it, but I just love having it to dip my hushpuppies in. Tartar sauce is good but I sure wish you would add the option of cocktail sauce along with the tartar sauce. Please consider it!! Thanks.
Theres probably something on the menu Ive yet to try that will end up being disappointing, but so far its all been stellar. This place ticks a lot of boxes too (comfort food, breakfast, burgers, etc.). Its priced perfectly, and the quality is dependable. Love the Hickory Burger, but I find myself craving The Big Bend on a regular basis. That thing could probably feed 3 people too. This place is a must-try.
Exceptional food and service, its worth the trip for the menu names alone. Like most things Denton theres a rustic flavor of old time Texas a quiet quality and good cheer.Best pancakes Ive had since some insanely expensive ones in north Dallas at a restaurant opening. This is the diner of my youth and the nostalgic walk was delightful. If you cant find your favorite thing on the menu they can probably make it. Renee was amazing server and the perfect blend of attention and leaving you alone. Real food, fair prices and the funniest menu names Ive seen in a very long time. Lonesome Dove to Bonanza with a sprinkling of childhood TV staples. You really cant go wrong here at Cartwrights even on a very rainy morning.
Being a native Texan, Im very reluctant to order chicken fried steak in a restaurant. WELL!!! I was VERY pleasantly surprised. It was amazing. Perfect to be be exact. We ordered well done hashbrowns and actually got them!!! Most restaurants have a hard time getting hashbrowns crispy but Cartwrights did an amazing job!!! The only bad part on my order was I didnt ask for my english muffin crispy. Other than that it was a perfect breakfast!!! Great food and service Thank you.
3rd and final update. After being back several times since 2018, still no cocktail sauce as of 4-23-2022. The owner had remarked to another reviewer awhile ago regarding adding cocktail sauce; ...that it is a great suggestion and they will look into it.. I was SO hopeful they meant it but apparently not. 😔The catfish is truly spectacular, *truly*!! I wish I could meet the person who cooks them up because their catfish is perfection! I personally simply like to dip my hushpuppies in cocktail sauce. I always have and always will. I cannot stand tartar sauce and thats any restaurants tartar sauce, everything about it, from the color, to the smell, to the appearance, and the taste because I have tried it and its just a huge UGH for me.I guess thats why I was hoping against hope that the owners at Cartwrights might read my review and the other reviewer who commented on this and truly consider it... Even tho we may only be a couple of customers, I know there must be others who love having cocktail sauce alongside catfish and hushpuppies!! I was hoping they might keep at least one bottle around for the one or two customers who would ask for some, even disposable packets of cocktail sauce would be awesome and it would be *SOOO* very appreciated!!Regardless of this disappointment, I will continue to come to Cartwrights and I will continue to get the catfish because it is so, SOOO good!!! Theyre the only place Ive ever ate at that never fails on their delicious catfish. Yall are the fried catfish masters!! Please, **please** dont ever change whatever wonderful magic youre doing to those delectable fried catfish filets! Plus, Ive never, ever had bad service here!!I urge anyone and everyone reading this to go to Cartwrights if you find yourself in Denton and try their food. If not for their delectable catfish (but sadly dont expect them to have cocktail sauce), they also have an *amazing* chicken fried steak and also a great breakfast menu!!
We had a big group 9 total. The waitress was great and a hard worker. The cooks took forever and a couple of orders were completely wrong. When the food did arrive 50 minutes after ordering, it was fresh, hot and good. The time of day we went was so. The kitchen needs some help .
Generous portions of delicious comfort food! Chicken fried steak we had was one of the best ever. Sides: sweet potato fries, seasoned green beans, mac n cheese and mashed potatoes all very tasty. Nice setting on the square in Denton looking at a beautiful courthouse! Well definitely return!
As far as food goes, I had the chicken fried steak with fried okra and green beans. The okra had an excellent crunch without being overdone, the green beans were both savory and flavorful, and the chicken fried steak lived up to all my expectations. I noticed a few reviews calling it rubbery, but that was not my experience. I definitely took my time to enjoy each bite.
We have eaten here twice in the last 2 months. Once for late lunch and today for breakfast. Both times we left dissatisfied. Food is okay, not great. Service is less than great. 😒 I wish I could give it better reviews as it seems some really like this place. We will probably not return for a third try.
I had left a meal on the table the day before, as a mom I barely get to eat my food when I want to so of course feed my daughter first had 3 bites of my steak, since I had already eaten my salad. By the time I got to actually eat I wasn’t really hungry so we got to go boxes. We ended up forgetting to grab the boxes so I called the next day morning(bc I literally left 2 whole Rib-eyes and my meal side in the box) to see if they hold on to them or to see if they could help with the situation and they pretty much told us there’s Nothing they can do and said they only saw a catfish in a box left behind BASICALLY CALL ME A LIAR. So I pretty much paid them to throw my 2 10 oz steaks away. I figured they might be nice enough to either offer a discount or something but nothing. So we’ll never go there again and this being our First and last experience with them. Our waitress was sweet though, but felt like they didn’t even care. We just moved to the area so this was a disappointing experience being back in TX. I’ll definitely be telling all my co workers, friends and family NEVER to go here.
This is at the top of the list of my favorite restaurants. The kitchen staff is top notch and the food is consistently PERFECT. No exaggeration. I have never sent anything back and have always loved every dish they’ve brought to me. You can tell that they love what they do! The servers are always on top of things as well. They are as good as any fine dining waitstaff you’d find. If you haven’t ever been here, do yourself a favor... go eat here!!!!
Right off the square in downtown Denton sits this fantastic place. My wife and I decided to try it and we were definitely not disappointed. Emily, our waitress was absolutely awesome. So friendly and helpful. She was always ready to help and serve. We tried the salad with the house made ranch dressing and YUM. We had the super delicious chicken fried steak and hamburger steak plate. Everything was so wonderfully delicious. The atmosphere was great and the service was fabulous. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone and will happily be going back again. Happy Eats!
Stopped in for lunch yesterday and was pleasantly surprised by a fantastic lunch and friendly waitstaff. Chicken fried chicken cooked in fresh peanut oil with generous helpings for green beans and mashed potatoes. The restaurant was clean and so were the restrooms. I was greeted several times by staff even though it was seat yourself. Didnt like getting my check with the meal...but it is covid.
Its hard to mess up soup, salad, and sandwiches, but they managed to do all 3! Chicken tortilla soup was a heavy tomato base and inedible. The replacment potato soup was obviously canned and also not good. Chicken salad sandwich was bland and also tasted like canned chicken salad. Ugh! The salads were passable but their house salad could have used a nice flavored vinaigrette. We had a very nice server but nevertheless, I wont be back.
We ordered up pretty much the whole menu: rattlers, burger, steak, catfish, & the country fried steak. & no one was disappointed! The rattlers were amazing! Do yourself a favor & order them next time you’re here. Food was great, servers were attentive. Good place to take the family & friends.
Just had the best breakfast! Lauren was my server and she was professional and prompt. I’m not the easiest customer to please and she was very patient with several requests I had. Chicken fried steak is perfect. Crispy, well cooked and not greasy. Their gravy tastes like my mother’s. French toast was perfect. I highly recommend Cartwright’s. I can’t wait to come back.
I was pleasantly surprised with the wide variety of food options that they had listed at this location. The menu has a bit of everything, I personally consistently choose their breakfast tacos which are exceptional. I hear that their best known for their chicken fried steak which I’ve yet to try, but have heard that it’s astonishing. The staff is respectful, and friendly which means a lot to me. The price isn’t horrific, especially for where it’s located.I definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking to grab a bite on the beautiful historic square. Only downside of the location being, the sever lack of ample parking. The parking is completely inadequate, meaning you’re most likely going to have to take a walk to get to the facility. In conclusion, the in desirable parking aside. This restaurant is pretty amazing, and I recommend it to anyone reading this and contemplating getting a bite here. 🥘 🌯
I went in for a pick up order. Spoke to one of the three hostesses that directed me to their take out table. I then stand there for 15 minutes with not one waitress talking to me, even though all seven of them made eye contact and ignored me. An old guy walks in and three people immediately help him and check on him. After him, someone FINALLY asked me if I had been helped. Plus. My order was wrong. And I saw them leaving other take out orders open, getting cold. Dont open up fully if you cant manage it.
We went as a group of 6 for breakfast, we all got different meals, of varying difficulties (and cook times) and everything was spectacular. I had a steak and egg breakfast, they nailed the temperature and seasoning, my mother had a veggie eggs benadict, also delightful. All of us had our eggs different, nailed every single one. Basically, the cook was on point, the server was pleasant, the service was good. I highly recommend, and will be returning
If you are looking for southern style home cooked breakfast this is your place. Biscuits and sausage gravy, crispy bacon, hash browns and I could go on.The menu selections are very abundant. They have delicious lunch options as well. Just know that there are not a lot of healthy options.
Their fried pickles are amazing, they give you a huge tray of them!! I love their spicy ranch. Service is always good, even if sometimes there can be a wait. Its worth it. Menu is southern comfort food, and they always pack your plate. Youre going to be rolling out of there. I couldnt wait to dig in to take a before picture, sorry about the pic with half eaten food!
Update-Im not sure whats going on, but the last two times that Ive come, service has been terrible and the food quality low, wilted lettuce in the salad for an example. I just dont think were going to give this place another try, even though it used to be one of our favorites.Food and atmosphere are amazing. The food is authentic, fresh, and you get your moneys worth in portion size. The staff is friendly and energetic.
I came here with one of my professors and fellow students for an early breakfast. Our waitress was really nice and attentive. We also enjoyed our food. I got the french toast and really liked it. Would like to come here again and try their other items! The interior was also well decorated; I loved the ranch house feel. Highly recommend!
Southern cooking at its best!! Cartwrights definitely lived up to its reputation. Best Chicken Fried Chicken around. Their homemade mac n cheese was merely phenomenal. Our food arrived so quickly I was amazed...and skeptical. But amazement returned upon first bite. Bonus: our server could not have been more friendly, adorable or perfect.
Since moving to Texas, we have been on a search for the best chicken fried steak in our area. We have even driven as far as an hour and a half away from our home in search of this fine meal. We have finally said Our Search is Over! We have found that Cartwrights chicken fried steak fits the bill for what we love in a chicken fried steak meal! The steaks are tender and full of flavor, the batter coating is crisp and not soggy, and it never falls off during the course of the meal. The mashed potatoes takes like my grandma was in the back making them. And the gravy is to die for. The meal tastes homemade instead of restaurant-type food. Note here: we always order the half-order since the steak is so large. The fried okra is the best weve tasted anywhere. You can tell the okra is freshly sliced and deep-fried and never frozen. I can guarantee you wont be disappointed with the chicken fried steak meal at Cartwrights!
Had the half order of chicken fried steak. Plenty big enough for me. Good flavor. Tender and no gristle. Gravy had a good texture and was not overly full of pepper. Mash potatoes were good and steamed broccoli was tasty. Service was prompt and attentive without being intrusive. Was a solid meal worth the cost and a return trip.
The best homemade food I have ever tasted!! My mom, daughter and I loved it!!! Thank you to our server Aaron for making us feel at home and checking on us when he could to make sure we were comfy and enjoying our amazing food! Speaking of, kudos to the chef!!! Amazing and definitely worth more than 5 stars! Looking for a good place to get some amazing down home cookin?? Come here! For real!!!! We will be back when we come visit my daughter!!
Great when you want a really hearty meal. Breakfast available all day, which is great when you want eggs and bacon for lunch! The full sized chicken fried steak is crazy big, but you can order a half order which is plenty for most very hungry people. The Linda Lou grilled chicken sandwich is large and delicious. The only thing I would not recommend is the hashbrowns. Pretty soggy. Get another side and you are good.
Really enjoyed this place! Look forward to going back and trying some more of their entrees. But, let me tell you about the two soups I tried. It was a cooler day, perfect for soup, and their baked potato soup and beer cheese soup were nothing short of amazing. So much flavor and very filling. If their other menu items are this good, wow, just wow. Cant wait to sample more...
I’m sorry, I had high hopes for this restaurant as the reviews were great. However our experience wasn’t great. My meatloaf did not have good flavor, very salty, not sure if it was loaf or the gravy. Steamed broccoli was cold and tough. My husbands chicken fried steak tasted like the grease it was fried in was old.Service was very good.

2022-03-21Went to breakfast with friends and wanted to try a new breakfast place and I was super impressed! The staff was so on top of drinks and making you feel comfortable. The eggs on my meal were cooked to perfection and the corn tortilla were super crisp despite the amazing sauce covering it.My friends said that there meal was super good and that nothing was undercooked or overcooked.Again, absolutely loved the staff, they were just so sweet and bent over backwards to get you what you needed. If you want a good breakfast place to get a quick bite or to gather with friends, this place is perfect.

2022-05-24Their fried pickles are awesome I had an omelette for lunch with mix vegetables and cheese and it was good. I just would like more cheese through it not the backside of it because it was folded over and the cheese is only in the back. Overall the meal was good

2022-01-06Stopped in for a bite with the spouse.Hope (waitress) was great and watching the crew work was amazing. They helped each other out by putting orders together, calling out was needed while at the order window (salad, syrup, ranch etc.). Staff waiting for their order to come to the window, knocked out getting the extra items ready for the waiter/waitress at the order window. Catfish and Mushroom Swiss Burger was great.

2022-03-18Acting on the recommendation from someone who resides in Denton, my sister and I decided to have lunch at Cartwrights Ranch House, located across from the old historic courthouse. Let me tell you it was a good decision. Theres a lot to choose from on the menu, including all day breakfast, burgers, sandwiches, salads, soups & entrees from meatloaf to fried Catfish. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes and fried okra. My sister decided on the breakfast item of Chicken Fried Steak, two eggs over medium, breakfast potatoes and a biscuit. This was home style cooking at its BEST. Neither one of us could finish our chicken fried steaks, although we tried. Service was friendly and helpful ( Thanks Josh). Next time Im in the Denton area I will be stopping in at Cartwrights. 👍

2021-10-26Great home style cooking place right on the square. Very clean inside. Staff was friendly and the food was amazing. I had the huevos rancheros with their in-house red chili sauce. Sauce was delicious the only thing I would have changed is spice level. If I could have had a choice I would have liked the sauce spicy. It had great flavor though and I would go back.

2021-11-19What I learned about Cartwrights Ranch House:✨they had their 10 year anniversary this year.✨they’re known for their “famous chicken fried awesomeness” (including chicken fried steak).✨they serve breakfast all-day.✨the prices are super affordable and you get a lot of food!✨everything is made from scratch, the true homestyle cookin’ way.✨the owner is super involved in the community and has been the President of the #DentonMainStreet board the past couple years (finishing his term). We most recently ordered the 2x2x2 and the Bat Masterson for breakfast - both under $8 each! From old fogies sippin’ on their coffee while reading the newspaper to college kids simply wanting a delicious, affordable place to eat on the #downtowndenton square, this place welcomes all people and their food comforts all souls.

2022-07-14We returned to Cartwright’s and it is a pleasant dining experience. The overeasy eggs were perfect and the bacon was cooked just right. However stay away from the fried broccoli as it is less than tasty.

2021-11-30Never disappoints! Always friendly staff and good food! My family loves the chicken fried steak, I do not eat that meal. They offer breakfast, sandwiches, salads, soups and everything very tasty.

2022-02-20Our first time here. Bustling, friendly atmosphere which made us happy. Unfortunately, we were seated right on the edge of where where the wait staff put in their orders and picked up the food. Not unfortunate because of the wait staff but because we had to witness so much uncleanliness. There was nowhere for these folks to wash their hands and one server took off her mask and coughed all over food and ice and beverages. They were rolling silverware right next to where they were putting up dirty dishes and it just seems like they needed somewhere to wash their hands or to be a little bit more sanitary. For the most part, our breakfast was really good. Our bacon was mostly uncooked And one piece was still cold like it had just come out of the pack. They did adjust our bill for this though which was nice because they really didnt have to.

2022-03-17I love trying Omelettes when they are available! A little bit disappointed with the omelette being a bit dry. My mom had the chicken fried steak and that was amazing!
