4/14/22: Went again in hopes it was better. Nope, still too spicy. They use way too much chili powder in their enchilada sauce. I went to San Antonio, and the flavor was awesome and didnt burn your mouth. Casa Herrera owners need to learn something from SA.Edit 06/13/21: We went in several times over the last few weeks. I called to complain about their enchiladas sauce being a bit too spicy. Leaves a after taste of heat in your mouth and your stomach will be bothering you later. Too much chili powder or something else in it. My mom and brother came and it was too much for them too. I tried to talk to the manager that is usually the cashier and she was rude and wouldn’t listen. Saying we never had complaints on it before, and it’s me since they eat their food all the time. I’ve been going to them for years and they changed over the last year. They have other complaints it the reviews of similar problems. Guess they don’t read the reviews. We will be going elsewhere now as they don’t seem to care to fix it.Older review:Been coming here for years.. Love the texmex but lately their sauce on the enchiladas has gotten a bit too spicy with too much chili powder. They use to be awesome. Last at least 5 visits have not been so good and we stopped going as often now as my family cant handle spicy food.
Second time weve ordered from here the lady at the register gives rude a whole new meaning!Without customers your nothing! You might want to remember that in the future both times same lady at register was extremely rude.Thought the 1st time it may have been a bad day but 2nd time its apparently normal to be very rude and short with your customers wont be going back.Miguels instead or Elchico!
Pretty good Tex Mex but it always feels so rushed and impersonal. And the entrance is the same as the cashier and the same as the to-go pickup; its a real bottleneck. Such a hassle trying to get in and out of the dining room. Surely they could figure out something better just to get people in and out.
Server 5 stars, food 3 stars, hostess 0 starsWe came tonight at 5 and were told a 25-minute wait. I gave our name and said we would wait in the lobby where it was extremely hot even with two fans blowing (maybe they could invest in a window shade). We waited about 20 minutes, my husband went to check, and he was told they took our name off the list because I said we were going somewhere else. I did not tell them we were leaving. Instead of honoring our original place in line, the hostess said she would see what she could do and put our name on the bottom of the list. Then our guest went to check and they argued with her. We finally got seated about 5:45 after several people who came in after us got seated. This is poor customer service. The Herrera mom and dad would have been embarrassed by this. We were embarrassed how we were treated in front of an out-of-town guest after we had said this was a good place to go. The good news is that we had a wonderful server named Maria and she saved the evening. She was friendly and did her best to get us taken care of quickly. Our guest had an appointment to get to and the seating delay could have meant she would be late. Maria got our order, kept our glasses filled, and served our food in time for our guest to finish and get to her appointment on time. The ladies up front have not been friendly the last three times we have been there. Its a shame. We like to go to locally-owned places, but Im sure it will be a long time before we go back here. If we get an apology, we will forward it to our guest.
We ate here for the first time 3/30/21. The gentleman that waited on us was fantastic! He was incredibly busy but continuously checked on us and his other tables with a genuinely good attitude. Our food came to the table quickly and was reasonably good. The atmosphere is comfortable and welcoming. Overall, I am very impressed and wish that we had come sooner.
My New Favorite Mexican Place!EXCELLENT Food, Service, And Ontop Of All That $5 to $12 a Person And You Are Full!Forgot The Name Of The Plate In The Pic But It Was A #34 Spicy Pollo....(something)Meal was cooked and seasoned to perfection! :-)We definitely will be back ASAP!
My wife and I ate at this restaurant several years ago and I promise you that we will never do it again. Im not sure if the same person still owns this lolrestaurant but when we ate at this restaurant, the lady at the cash register was extremely rude and rigid towards us. The food there was great so I will give this restaurant one star for that but my wife and I did not appreciate being treated that way and we felt that her attitude was very unprofessional and unacceptable. You dont treat your customers like that. We wont be back. I can promise you that!
I just Love this Restaurant and there severs one that I have to mention is the sever Sue . The woman and men are all great I wish I had them when I ran a restaurant. They are all so caring and gave me the best service and gave me what I needed and they do with a smile and respect. I have never seen any severs actually help one another and clean as they go. It is so refreshing to see that and that they care about there employers Business. I would like to say that is so rare and I salute them for a great time and excellent service and experience.Thank you so muchRichard Francis Brogren
The waitress was solely interested in her french fries she wanted to eat. We really did not want to hear about that. She tried to give me my husbands order. Then she began complaining that there was messy people. As a customer when I go into dine with my husband we like to enjoy the atmosphere and food. We dont like to hear I really need to eat my fries or how messy other people are!
The service was wonderful and the restaurant was clean. I love all the Christmas lights, and the prices are reasonable. The only thing is the food just isnt that amazing. The chili rellanos are soggy, and filled with queso(?) Instead of cheese. The rice is so so, better when drowned in salsa, the beans were fine. I think the chips are too thick. But my mother-in-law loves it and the service is great so well be back lol.
I’ve been in town a few days with my wife’s family for a funeral. The family told me of three places to try, this being one.I chose this place because it was family owned. It was a little gem. We went on Tuesday night for an early dinner. We had An older lady serve us, Marie. We told her we were from out of town, after visiting with her a while, she shared with us that she was the niece of the owner and had been there over 20 years. My Chile rellenos were so good, the beans were excellent, I’m picky about beans, these were so good wrapped in my tortilla with relleno. When we checked out we complimented the place and the lady was so nice and friendly. We told her we’d be back.We came in tonight and she remembered us, even with the masks. We had Donnie, he was just as wonderful,He even helped me put a plate together, It was amazing. You guys in Abilene are lucky to have this place,I’d eat there at least twice a week!!!We Wish they’d open one in Lubbock.Great original Tex mex, wonderful service and very clean!!
The food was good loved it when they had their buffet but forgot when in Abilene Texas wanted to go help the Mexican buffet at this establishment but totally forgot about the pandemic that shut down all the buffets they didnt want to open theirs back up used to go there years ago when driving to Big spring Texas to work at the hospital there every now and then Id stop at that restaurant it was a nice place to eat but the daughters were very rude apparently the daughters parents were up in years and they were running the establishment but anyways had finished our meal was waiting on the waitress to bring us our to go drinks and I guess one of the daughters came to our table and set a glass down on the table like she thought we werent going to pay for our meal I gave her my Citibank debit checking account card forgot it was locked when we went to check out she looked at us and I told her I forgot to unlock my card so when I unlocked it she was all smiles after that when we paid but the foods good but the daughters that run the establishment art or are not
We had lunch Sunday after Church at Casa Herrera in Abilene. Didnt have to wait for a table today. Wonderful waiter named Abraham from Italy. He loved to talk, was very courteous, and didnt even ask if we wanted refills on drinks. He just did it. Food was there in 10 to 12 minutes, good flavor, temperature was hot, it was very good. He was back numerous times asking if we needed anything. Definitely one of our favorites in Abilene.
Great food and outstanding service. I really like this family owned restaurant. Surprisingly, its rare to find a buffet style Mexican restaurant that offers chef quality food at a modest price, how do they do it!The food is really good. Ive tried and tried to imitate their rice without success, so Ive given up and I just order theirs. Even though they only offer a buffet during lunch hour, they are an excellent choice for dinner. Their dinner entrees are excellent. I enjoy the atmosphere, cleanliness and service and you will too. Enjoy...
This is a great local Mexican food place to eat. Their service is always good and the atmosphere is authentic. They have a buffet option but on Sundays the buffet has guacamole on it! Also, sweet or unsweetened tea is included with Sundays buffet. Their menu items are also fantastic. They do serve alcohol. I highly recommend eating here.
Sorry but I went another time to pick up my brisket plate that I ordered....Dang i paid 15.10 for that brisket plate and to make the plate to look good they added more bell peppers and onions and tomatoes but hardly no beef. I was like ....wheres the beef ? Dang ! And the beef it had was mostly pieces of fat yuk! For 15.10. Im sorry but it wasnt worth the money ! The brisket looked like it was the same brisket from all day Omg I wonder if its served fresh..daily .or they serve the brisket from the day before ..It didnt even have no taste. I believe that they ripped me off with 15.10 and it wasnt even worth it.
The best Mexican restaurant in Abilene. This has become our favorite place to dine in. The atmosphere, the waiters and waitresses are the best!!! All the employees are so nice and very friendly. We love 💕this restaurant. Until next time “Casa Herrera!” Thank you so much!! 😍
Nothing about this place authentic from the fake food to the owners, they make 3 briskets and let them sit in the walk in till its all bought up they just nuke it in the microwave, the chips and salsa is good thats about it but the salsa does come from a can like most of the food, the food is bland and tasteless just like the Herreras and Abilene, id rather eat at La Popular atleast their food is authentic...so if u have no tastebuds and like eating fake tex mex go to casa Auschwitz i mean Herrera
We visited here with friends, had a party of 10 including two children. The service was pretty good, the waiter was friendly and accommodating to our large party. We were seated fairly quickly as well even though it was rush time. The food was acceptable, nothing special. I had the chile relleno which was a bit bland. I felt the prices were too high for the quality of food. Our food was on the cool side which was disappointing.
The one star was for atmosphere and really good service from the waitress.... food was not good. Ordered cheese enchiladas and got corn cardboard with strip of barely seen and recognizable cheese. Not covered in enchilada sauce but bean sauce.... Eaten here in days gone by and it was good...not this visit....
I hadnt been in a few years but it was still quite charming. The buffet could be better, such as lukewarm food, not enough meat in the tacos or tamales that had been under a heat lamp a little too long and no brisket in the brisket and veggies dish. Everything else was good and the service was awesome.
Really nice Mexican food restaurant very close to the mall in Abilene. Great good, reasonable prices, friendly staff all make this a super dining experience. Warning: It is quite easy to fill up on their chips and delicious hot sauce before your meal ever arrives. So, be careful!
Im giving this place 3 stars, not because of the service or how the food was. But because we went to an event where the upstairs was rented out, which is not handicapped accessible. If you are going for lunch/dinner, the food is great and the staff were very friendly. However if you wanted to rent the upstairs, be mindful if you have guests who have trouble getting up stairs. They may not be able to attend. Out of the reviews, I saw nothing about this and Im sure others might want to know.
I drove into town feeling tired but hunger won the battle. I googled restaurants near me and Herrera’s came up in the search. I looked at the pics online and reviewed the menu before driving the 3 minutes, could’ve walked but I was tired. I arrived and was quickly seated at a table in a cozy spot. They don’t have booths, only tables but it was comfy. I look at the menu and I’m torn between the #5 which has a tamale, two enchiladas and a taco or the flat enchiladas with two fried eggs on top just like my mom used to make. I ask for guidance and finally decided on the #5 plate. In the interim chips and salsa are served with the salsa tasting fresh with just enough of a bite to wake my senses. My piping hot plate arrives and I’m excited to try every portion. The taco was hearty with a perfectly crunchy shell. The two enchiladas were big and smothered with a tasty red chile sauce. The tamale was subpar but but still edible. The beans and rice were really good. Overall, I highly recommend this restaurant if you want food cooked fresh like mom’s home cooking. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner and her daughter, they were very friendly and were genuinely concerned about my dining experience. I promised Mrs. Herrera I’d be back as soon as possible!
The first time I ate here it was so good. I was excited to try it again but the refried beans tasted like the salt and the beef fajitas were blah at best. I has the beef fajitas the first time swell so decided to give it another chance. The third time the beef fajitas were gross, the beans still way too salty but not as bad as the first time, and the queso was just ok. I was starving so I am sure my review would of been much more harsh otherwise. I will never return.
Ive never had a bad meal at Casa Herrera. There is consistency in their menu preparations and it is always hot. Our family loves to sit down together over a great meal that is as close to home made as you will get.Liz and her family have continued a family tradition of providing great food and wonderful service.
Steak was poor quality. Taste like dirt or liver. When speaking to the manager she was very unprofessional in reminding us they were a family owned business and her sister had the fajita steak for lunch and liked it. Didnt seem to want to believe us. Wont be going back soon.
Had an absolutely fantastic experience here. The waiter was professional and his customer service was absolutely on par, the majority of the prices werent outrageous, the food came out quickly, and was delicious. My only concern was they didnt I.D. us for drinks, but this place definitely deserves my 5 stars
The fact that this place has good reviews 100% baffles me and makes me wonder about peoples tastebuds. I have a pretty low bar for Mexican food Im not picky but it was absolutely terrible even the chips were sub par. My husband just said his plate looked brown and tasted brown...and my husband even has a lower bar than me with Mexican food. He said if brown was a flavor that place would be it. The buffet I literally grabbed a plate and only ate part of it and that was all I ate. I was like kk sopapillas they really cant screw this up...most bland sopapillas Ive ever had in my life. I will never step foot in this place again. The pros are staff and place is clean...if you were paying for atmosphere only great...but if you are paying for food then burn your tongue before going.
Service was very slow, everything took longer than it should have. My boyfriend and I were seated in a small side dining room surrounded by large tables that half consisted of children under the age of 7, seemed like the loud family room. As we were paying/leaving, we mentioned it to the manager, Maria, she basically blew us off and even became argumentative and told us we must have been looking for a bar atmosphere, which is NOT true, at all. We wanted to enjoy a nice dinner and Outback had a wait, so we went to Casa Herrera, if we wanted to go to a bar, we would have gone to a bar. I cannot believe she didnt apologize or try to make it right, instead made excuses and then tried to make it seem as if we were the problem. I will never go back, unless someone gives me a gift card, even then I might consider re-gifting it. Farolitos is better anyways.
The salsa was bland. The enchiladas were below average, and I couldnt finish them (which is saying a lot coming from me). The service was poor. The water had a bad aftertaste. This Tex-Mex restaurant is way more Tex than Mex. If you are wanting authentic Mexican food, this place is not for you.
If you love Mexican food you want to come over here. At Casa Herrera youll find traditional plates of your favourite Mexican cuisine or you can hit the all you can eat buffet which includes various enchiladas, tacos, tamales, rice, burritos, salad and more.... Oh, and for desert youll find fresh sopapias... (or however you spell it lol)served with honey, banana pudding and more.
Seated my girlfriend and I in the party room full of three other tables full of kids and family. When mentioned, Marie her family owned the place the manager was rude. I was told to look around its a family restraunt. Among other other in welcomed suggestions she continue to be rude. Food was sub par at best and if this said family restraunt is serving the community needs to be replaced. DO NOT GO HERE
I was TDY in Abilene, and I have had better Mexican food in New Jersey. The chips tasted like they were out of a bag and salsa tasted like it was out of a jar. I have had better Mexican microwavable dinners than what they served. And if dont like salt go to Taco Bell. Dont waste your time or money at this place.
Not a very good experience waitress was cold and rude, seemed like it bugged her when we asked for something and she charged me for an adult meal instead of the kid meal I asked for my daughter, shes 9! Also supposedly their tacos dont come with cheese!!?!?! Wth kinda Mexican place is this! Never coming back!
All-you-can-eat mexican food lunch buffet. Need I say more? It isnt the best tex-mex in Abilene, but for a buffet its great. Plus they have dessert. The interior of the building is rather fascinating, too. In fairness, I should mention that Ive only had the lunch buffet, I dont know what the menu items are like. But I will be back to find out.
I am so suprised to see some of the reviews for this place!I love it..Its not that bland!!! I guess some of you are used to the greasy mess thats out there..My family has been eating here since they were in burro alley and south 1st location. We have always eaten here about once a week. The FOOD is fresh!! Beans are made perfect like my mothers, no bland can taste.I recomend the Fajitas. or fajita Quesadillas or chile rellenos, they can be spicy, depending on mother nature!!! excellent rice!! I drank a Herrera margarita and got a good buz, my husband was driving! Margarita is NOT waterd down like I read above! There is always a part of the family working!! Ask for Marie or Sally for service and tell them I sent you, They are all so nice!!!!!!The place is spotless and the decor is nice!!All the negative reviews forced me to do my own..Dont listen to the above until you have tried.. This place is not Excellent but its damn good and .clean and service is good.. I also tried the buffet a few times, I dont like any buffets due to the lack of heat. its good but i prefer HOT food out of an oven!! Menudo is great on Sundays and they have a GREAT carne gisada breafast with potatoes!! Prices are about the same as other full service mexican establishments.
Went for lunch. They call themselves tex mex, but really its safe aka no spice, (or flavor for that matter) pseudo tex-mex. A little salt and spices goes a long way, theyre just lacking either one. I did have the buffet, so all the enchiladas were tried, the tamales, rice (quite gummy) bean burritos, beef tacos. I had a queso with it all which was the saving grace.I will most likely not be back.
Never in my life have I experienced a chimichanga like the one I had at casa Herrera. It was rubbery, bland and tasted as if it had been fried in old grease, left sitting for a day and then microwaved when I ordered it. I have had gas station chimichangas that were fresher and had more flavor. There was a place just down the road called Tamollys and I wish I had gone there instead. The only redeeming factor I can think of was the margaritas.
We had the lunch buffet and found d it lacking in flavor all around. The fried potatoes had fake bacon in them. The rice was bland. The tamales and enchiladas so overcooked that they fall apart when trying to get them from buffet to plate. The desserts consist of fried biscuit dough, frozen cobbler served very stingely, canned banana pudding and what,I assume, is supposed to resemble sopapillas , some crumbly, dry mess.
I’m Sierra Herrera and I was wondering if you guys know my Grandparents Rudy Herrera and Yolanda Herrera. My grandpa told me the family restaurants we have and this was one of them. I’ve never been to the restaurant because I live in California. Just please let me know!! Thank you!

2021-12-15Overpiced. Didnt care for the food too much. Taco bell uses more chili powder than this place does. The carne guisada was a pink/salmon color and was not even brown or seasoned well. The chile rellenos were okay, but the skin wasnt well blistered and membrane was still chewy and very noticeable. The tortillas were store bought. The meat was tender and probably good for older folks who have food sensitivities. The best part about our whole visit was the waitress and the pitcher margaritas. Thats about it.

2021-10-19The service was absolutely fantastic and the ambiance was delightful! The food was definitely not outstanding, though. The seasoning was unbalanced (or missing), but there was a lot of food, so if youre just looking for fuel to keep you going, its not bad!

2022-04-05My food was terrible! The food had absolutely no flavor, not even salt and pepper could help it.The salsa was bad too, it tasted like pure cumin!Even though the food was bad, our waitress was amazing!

2021-09-18Fantastic experience! This was our first time at Casa Herrera and definitely not our last. The food and the service were incredible. If you’re thinking about Mexican food for dinner, this is where you need to be!

2022-05-15Went with the family for dinner and had the beef fajitas for two. They were delicious. My wife had the chicken enchiladas with green sauce and sour cream sauce. They were great as well. Really enjoyed the chips and salsa and the service was excellent. Will be back.

2022-05-07Terrible experience. Host was incredibly rude. She didnt even acknowledge us the first five minutes we were there because she wad you busy playing on her phone. When she did look up from her phone, she quoted us 40 minutes wait. The place was empty. We waited. Finally got seated- and wish we would have iist left. Food was awful.

2022-02-26Best salsa in Abilene!!! Awesome lunch specials. Prompt and courteous waitstaff. All in all, a great dining experience any day of the week.
