I am so freaking glad I found this hidden gem! This place has so many different trail options! There is streams and then you get to the beautiful falls. The water is clear and cool, perfect for when you are done hiking. I didnt get to spend much time here but I will definitely coming back more prepared!
Great hiking trails. Great falls. Clean clear water in the river. The bathrooms were disgusting. The men’s room had feces all over the toilet and walls. The “hole” was filled with trash and has not been emptied in who knows how long. Humans are disgusting. They left trash all along the trail and at the falls. It impressed with the locals and how they take care of this beautiful creation of the most high G-d.
4 stars because the Trails are not markedSo set your hiking app or health tracker when you leave your car.The falls are farther along than expected. From the parking lot head down the trail. Youll go around a curve then take the stairs/bridges. When you get up the last stairs, go left and circle around to the right. Youll hear the falls.Even after no rain for awhile, they were still nice. Im sure theyre magnificent after a good rain.It was a lovely area. Lots of places to explore and moderate, but having no trails marked made getting lost very easy.We encountered a lot of people who were turned around and trying to get back to the parking lot.
Lots of great hiking trails, plenty of places for fishing. Pets are welcome on a leash. It’s FREE! The park does get busy so it is suggested that you get there early. The most popular area is the waterfall, just a 10 minute walk from the entrance on the main trail offers a nice cool escape from the heat. Take the time to explore and have a go’s app so you can Mark and track your position. The area offers some small caves, natural springs, geocaches, and lots of fun. Enjoy!!
Great place to slow down, spend some time and get back in touch with nature. Nice trails, relaxing atmosphere and if you go back by the falls the sound of the world fades away to the relaxing sound of the water. Love to go anytime I can spare a couple of hours.! Nice place to get in the water, but not a great place for a picnic. Please if you take anything in to eat or drink be sure to take your trash back out with you!
Like most of the reviews posted this is a beautiful place and the waterfall was super Awesome; the water was cold but worth it; we went there early like 7:30am and was there by ourselves for about an hour then people started coming in. It’s worth it and it’s free. I must say that I’m disappointed that people left trash all over the place, next time I just May walk with a trash bag and clean up what I see on the ground.
Moving to Texas from Arizona surprised me with the little differences and small things I didnt realize I would miss. And CREEKS is one of them. Now, this is no Fossil Creek (which was recently burned down by forest fires, forcing its closure for the foreseeable future, but I digress) but Chalk Ridge Falls is still really charming.I particularly liked the rope bridge and also it was a really great crowd. My son is only 1 year old, so the shallow water was perfect, but for those looking for a swimming hole, probably keep looking. This creek is a wading pool at best. But that cold water felt great on our feet and legs and was great for our little boy.Its worth a trip, I recommend it.
Beautiful simple hike for anyone whose not an experienced hiker who just wants to go enjoy being out in nature. Gorgeous falls and rivers peaceful, yet I would not recommend going on a weekend if your looking for a peaceful hike with not a lot of people because it can get cluttered and finding parking can be a pain. But it is definitely worth the visit.
My favorite place to hike since childhood!!This park is wonderful!Long winding trails, so many routes you can experience a different hike everytime you visit!Youre gonna love the waterfalls and bridges across the park!Bring some extra water, because youll probably get carried away exploring!I dont have much to say about the restrooms.. so maybe make sure youre good before ya go..
Awesome spot! Took a bit to find the waterfall but once I did it was so fun to explore and take pictures. There was an internet suspension bridge too that was fun to adventure on. Definitely felt a little out of place being there as the parking lot was empty (but I went in the middle of the day on a Wednesday) but once you start hiking it’s quite peaceful!
!!!!Beware all dog owners!!!!Please be careful taking your dogs on hikes and letting them into the water.Blue-green algae is everywhere it seems, and it is a terribly fast killer.I was out on a hike with a friend and our dogs today at Chalk Ridge Falls, and after swimming through the creek, her dog collapsed within 4 minutes. She was limp and unresponsive. We rushed her to the nearest vet, where they intubated her as she was not breathing. Her heart rate was extremely low, but they were able to get that going again.Sadly, the few reflexes she still had on arrival, disappeared within the hour. Within 2 hours of her collapse, she went across the rainbow bridge, her mom and dad holding her closely. One of my dogs started showing symptoms as well (shaky, hind legs giving out), but shes a large dog, and has since improved and doesnt appear to be in any danger at the moment. We are closely monitoring her and her brother. Please hug your pups tight. In loving memory of Autumn. 🖤 she was the bested girl!!
Get there early, as parking fills quickly, or find yourself parked down the road. Easy trails for the whole family dogs included! Trails offer great little of the beaten path which a few times end up in you own little piece of the river. Great views withcool water to recharge to view a little more of what this park has to offer. Would not recommend bringing a stroller or wagon trails can be steep uneven and un paved.
Our day of exploration begun with a hike around this beautiful oasis. My family and I hiked for 2 hours and danced in the smooth waters of an epic waterfall. This place has so many hidden treasures and nooks to explore. We found teepees made of branches, 3 massive waterfalls, and tons of sights to see. I would recommend going early in the morning this place gets a little crowded around 12-4 just a heads up.
For central Texas this isn’t bad. I mean it’s not Washington state or Niagara Falls but it’s an alright place for this area. I’m very grateful we have it. There are fallen trees along the path and some major deterioration of stairs. But overall it’s pretty good. Have to give it 4 stars for this area.
“It wasn’t only a hiking experience, it was a wonderful experience “ Said Michelle. I had told her I did not know how to write a review on hiking, since it’s my first time; black people don’t really go hiking you know. I enjoyed it a lot though! Very nice scenery and very clean. It was a great experience of nature. I would definitely come here again! When I go on more hiking trails , I would accurately assess and compare this place to others.
My friend and I went here for a hike and ended up not being able to find any markers. We got lost and tried calling the office twice and nobody answered. We had to use out phone GPS system to find a way towards the parking lot again through the brush as the sun was nearly set. If we didnt run into some other people we would have been lost. Please put markers and make trails more clear for people.
The park has a great view of the waterfalls, unfortunately the trail is very worn down. Several spots along the nature trail have been completely washed out by water. Be careful where you step when you reach the end of the trail with the waterfalls as there is no pathway and you have to trek down to the base of the fall. The park is free for everyone with parking spots and a public restroom.
This is THE place to bring little kids for an easy hike and splashing fun. The shallow creek feeding its water falls is perfectly cold for Texas 100 degree summer. Quite a few dogs visit here but all on leash and everybody is well distanced. Better prepare a trail map in advance. Highly recommended as a family excursion.
The trails were beautiful and with all the resent rain the falls were so pretty!! There are a lot of little side trails that allow you to get closer to the water. Our family had a wonderful time and will definitely be back to check out the trails we didnt have time to hike.
Blue green water throughout the entire Lampasas River. Great trails to hike when it hasnt been raining. Came across multiple waterfalls that were hidden throughout. Please be respectful and responsible with your trash. Hiking most of the trails I found tons of bottles, boxes, bags, and just plain TRASH lying around the edges of the water holes and trails. Come on, before this area begins to be regulated by officals.PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT.
Super nice park and walking trail. Not much of a hike, but definitely a very nice walk with some decent little spots to sit and reflect.About 10 minutes into the walk I started to notice more and more garbage mostly beer cans and bottles and wished I had brought a garbage bag to clean some of it up, but the sun was setting and I was a little afraid of becoming lost in the mass of little trails as I hadnt been there before and the trails arent yet mapped out in Google maps.Overall very worth the stop if youre nearby, I had been driving for a few hours and it was the perfect place to stretch my legs and get my blood moving.
Beautiful location. Nice hiking trails. I would give it 5 stars but the parking is limited and there are no trash cans on the trails. So sadly, the further you get on the trails the worse the littering gets. Its bewildering that people come to this location to be amongst nature, then proceed to throw their trash wherever they want. Its a very contrasting mindset. I even found a diaper scrunched up under the roots of a tree.
This is a beautiful park but, the only map I found online is terrible. The trails are confusing. The bad map also shows a river crossing down the river but there IS NO RIVER CROSSING. The land across has been developed and is private. Our planned 3 mile hike turned into 4.5 because we tried to find the river crossing! The canyon above the river is filled with redbud trees but the trails off the river have quite a bit of up and down hiking can be muddy and very slippery after a rainfall. There are some stairs but they are mostly washed out. Take a bag to carry your trash out because the only trash bin is at the entrance along with the only pit toilet.
Best park in the Belton/Temple/Killeen area. Great hiking trails and water spots to dive in. Can get a tad busy, however the area is so large its never impossible to find a secluded spot for your party. Tons of hidden gems here outside of the main falls (which to be honest are the least impressive of this parks offerings). The fishing isnt great and you wont see much beyond a few striped bass. However, for the nature lovers theres quite a variety of birds and wildlife to see.
Great nature hike for the entire family. Go past the waterfall in sneakers or water shoes and walk towards the opposite direction of the water and view and sign the graffiti fence. Then youre able to climb up on the right of the fence and get back on the hiking trail.
We live in houston and saw this park on a FB group called Backpacking and Hiking Texas (check it out) someone posted photos of the falls and that same night I booked the hotel for the weekend. 3 hour drive later and OMG.... absolutely beautiful.. will definitely make this a recurring roadtrip. Very kid friendly, beautiful hiking scenery, rivers and OMG the fallsssssssss. Dont hesitate, book your hotel and get out here.
My boys and I have been coming here a very long time. We always take out what we bring in and bring extra bags for litter. However, in the last 2 years or so, it seems we cant bring enough bags to make a difference. The scouts and many other volunteers work hard to keep the park beautiful and safe for everyone but they cant do it all. What happened to dont mess with Texas? Take a look at my previous pictures, this is a gorgeous park, lets keep working together to keep it that way.
A couple pretty spots, but there is some reconstruction going on the trails which made it very confusing trying to hike the loops. Made several wrong turns onto what looked like the trailheads, but ended up in dead ends. Consider visiting if you want a sub 1 hour hike (even with setbacks).
Very easy Trail for all especially toddlers who want to explore. A lot of great picture spots and some cool Bridges to cross including a small suspension bridge my toddler loves it. There is also a free Forest School that meets theyre at 9:40 on Wednesday mornings to let children meet up for a playdate and explore nature. Look them up on Facebook Bell County Forest School. There are bathrooms at the parking lot they are not the best but it is better than nothing. A lot of people walk their dogs on this Trail so if you have a child who is scared of dogs or if you plan on bringing your dog be aware that there are many other families with their dogs there. There are benches along the way and lots of good spots to stop for a picnic.
Chalk Ridge Falls is my go-to getaway place that I found by accident! I have seen many snakes but they are always in the still water below the bridge and they dont bother people. Dont swim in that still water. I love that you can find beauty no matter which direction/path you decide to take. Its very pet friendly which is great because my dog loves going with me!
Always looking for a decent hike while traveling across America for work. This one is a good 1. The 1st part of the trail is a beginners hike. After the waterfall area, it slowly transitions into in intermediate hike. Some stairs and bridges. Im not sure how far the trails go because we didnt explore it entirely. There are no maps of the trails. This one is free But there is trash somewhat throughout the trails and the restrooms need servicing. Bring your own toilet paper. Weekends are OK but they tend to get crowded. I recommend early in the week. Was very peaceful
People actually keep dogs on leash here and its very friendly around view areas and waterfalls ppl take nice turns and then keep moving after a bit so its fun for all :)But since covid...the amount of trail trash has become overwhelming especially diapers...please pack it out and teach your kids how to treat the trail 👣
Right now Stillhouse Hollow Lake is so full that they are releasing tons of water at Chalk Ridge. Fantastic hike anytime, but right now is just amazing. Went to the waterfalls that are normally dry or just barely flowing...right now they are really going. Perfect time to break out the camera and get creative.
This park is very beautiful. The water is very clear as it comes out of natural springs in the back of the park. There are many trails that you can decide to hike most of which arent very challenging so everyone can do them, even more picture opportunities, and it is basically an endless source of fun if you are like me and love being outdoors. Overall, a great place to spend the day. I only wish camping were allowed here.
Well love this place and come back every year several times. I would give 5 stars but honestly it could use some TLC lately. I feel like some of the stuff isnt safe even if it is a hiking trail and its kind of at your own risk...that. ridge just seems like its going to fall any day now. But the area is so beautiful!
My first time going into Chalk Ridge Falls Park was a few months ago where I was doing location scouting for a photoshoot courtesy of LenzMazter Studios. The trails were wonderful and inviting. I explored literally for hours pass streams, over rocks, across bridges, and was quite pleased and looking forward to shooting with my clients there. If you enjoy, hiking, biking, running, and adventure on a whole, your needs will be met here. I got happily lost in the surroundings even as the rain came pouring down and wasn’t mad about it. It was an adventure I won’t soon forget and I have the mud stains on my jeans to prove it. If you were curious, the photoshoot was an absolute success as well. I look forward to shooting here again as well as hiking and trail running. Come out and enjoy all nature has to offer.
Im visiting from out of state and decided to check this out. It was nice and has nice views there are a lot of different paths but I stayed on the main path. I got there late in the day so I couldnt really stay too long to enjoy the whole thing but I liked what I did see.
So our family went to this park on Thursday. I wish there would was a map showing how far it is to the water fall and info on the trail walk that it is a Rocky road with steps to climb up and down and sometimes steep slides. Someone who is of age cannot walk this trail without assistance or at all. And there are no arrows showing you the way. I think it could be a better walk. And its kinda creepy so dead. We are from out of town and we will not be returning.
As expected, the trails were very muddy and slippery, and the river/waterfalls were brown due to the rains. That didnt stop people from jumping right in to enjoy the water. Unfortunately, there was also trash scattered around as well as many overgrown portions of the trails. Still an enjoyable time!
This is my favorite place to be. I found God here. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️There is plenty of hiking to be done. There is a small waterfall where locals go to play and wade inside. Fall, winter and early spring are the best seasons to visit. Pet friendly. Beautiful skies. Wonderful place to meditate and find peace.Id give this place 20 stars if it were an option. 😍
This place was GORGEOUS! It has beautiful scenery. The water felt ice cold in the middle of this Texas heat (~100°F today) which was incredibly refreshing. There is a small waterfall that we saw people playing on. Plenty of children were running around so it seemed very family friendly. We went to hike and there were so many trails all over. You could probably hike it all day and never hit the same trail twice. It can be moderate at times because it has some steep inclines and parts where we climbed up rocks (or down) to get places. You can bring your dog on a leash and we saw a handful while we were out there. Great place definitely will return!
Had a great walk. Short hike gets you to some beautiful water features. It’s dog friendly. I do wish there were some trash and cans around the entrance. I saw some people complaining earlier about litter. Someone must have listened, because the park looked pretty good. I plan on visiting again.
First thing to know if you plan on getting in the water please bring some water shoes to protect youre feet. The river is rocky and you wont enjoy the water worrying about youre feet. The other visitors were nice and polite during my visit. One big thing to note is that the facilitys are realy basic and unsanitary, to not paint a picture, but that was during my visit, that shuld get cleaned out in the meantime.
Place is nice for a few hours! Get ready for decent walk. The water is a slight teal-green and a good amount of people show up. BRING WATER SHOES!!! There is a bunch of small rocks in the steam where make it hard to walk without them. Other than that, its a nice walk/hike, smaller trails are around just dont go down the small one for too long. Hope you enjoy the water like I did.
Im a photographer, and Chalk Ridge Falls is one of my favorite places to take clients. There are plenty of places to take beautiful pictures. Lots of nice places to hike, and beautiful scenery. It does tend to get packed, especially on weekends and the parking could use some serious help. Also, be sure to use the bathroom before you go because, YIKES! That being said, the beauty of the actual park makes up for all of that. If you need a bathroom, there is a gas station 1 exit down on 190.
Nice hiking trails and creek access. However, parking is terrible. Crowded at 10 am.on a Saturday. Gross chemical toilet near trailhead. Stairs and fence railings are in need of repairs. No upkeep. No trail markers or maps. Worst part is the amount of trash. The virus human have trashed this beautiful place. Cant go 5 ft without encountering bottles, cans, socks, napkins, diapers, feminine products, etc. Just disgusting.
Went Tuesday, March 31st,21.It was a fun walk, but we could not find a marked trail so we were traipsing around without finding waterfall or bridge, which would have been cool, I lost my grey cardigan while walking, but we spent quality time with family and that is what its all about. Would come again, would like to do the bridge next time and find the fall.
Went on whim and was not totally prepared, but still had a good time. We arrived around 6pm. Lots of folks there, and like some other reviews might have mentioned there is quite a bit of trash around the place. People would bring their lawn chairs and coolers and make camp in the water, which might explain the trash. I love that there are certain spots that are safer and shallow for her but getting down into the falls is a bit tricky. Will try again at a different time.
Outstanding nature trail! Though some of the stairs are still needing repair after being washed out from flooding a couple of years ago, it was manageable even for this old lady on recuperating knee.Just lovely scenery along the Lampasas River and little meandering creeks!

2022-01-18Good place for a nice quiet hike. If you are lucky to find a place to park that is. People should take their garbage with them it is so sad that some come here, eat in a beautiful place and leave their bottles and plastic bags. Hiking path goes a long way, signs missing. One path just ends with a rusting away metal gate. Other path goes on for a mile at least, at one point I just turned around, no map so how far the trail goes it is unknown. Well the place deserve a bit more attention and hopefully it will get it, people are coming here - beautiful. Water is clear and you can see that there is not much fish here, and 98% it is not deep enough even.

2022-05-16My husband and I spent time on our anniversary walking trails here at Chalk Ridge Park. We enjoyed a beautiful, mild morning, admiring the natural beauty of within the park. Our favorite part was the sights and sounds of the birdsong along the trails, as well as the falls themselves. There were benches here and there along the trails where we were able to relax, rest, and hydrate in this peaceful place. It was lovely to spend time together in such a pleasant environment.

2022-06-13Nice place to hike, bike, fish and play in the water! Its on the other side of the dam. Theres also a little waterfall thats cool to sit on and let the water run over you. Nice plain novice hiking trail. Cool boulders and cliffs. It is dog friendly but the blue algae last year (2021) has ruined that.

2022-06-01The kids liked playing in the water. As other people have mentioned, trails are not marked. We didnt walk the entire trail since we found the waterfall pretty quick, so we stayed there for a while.

2022-06-25Mellow hike, and cool water. Seems to be very family friendly. Must climb stairs to get to the waterfall. Not wheelchair friendly. It said No Swimming but there were folks sitting under the waterfall. Mellow.

2022-06-16Such a great hike! First time and I noticed the trail ti the falls wasnt marked as well as others, but after downloading the map from all trails we found it easily! Lots of steps up and down. Fun swim, cool old rickety bridge, in and out hike about 2.5 miles..waterfall is about 3/4 mile into it...lots of trails!

2022-06-20Roughly a short .5 mile hike from the parking lot to the waterfall. To get to the falls quickly, follow the large main path from the parking lot and when you get the metal rails, continue walking up until you reach a bench. Here you will encounter two paths. Take the path to the left (wooden steps)which will lead you to a wooden bridge that leads up another set of steps going up.Once again you will encounter two paths, take the path to the left (

2022-01-07They could use better marked trails and large trail maps so you know exactly where to go. People should take better care of their environment and pick up their trash. The scenery is nice though.

2022-01-02Easy walk with little ones to explore and not get too deep into a hike. Love the suspension bridge and skipping rocks. Summertime its good for a dip, too.

2022-04-07Love the hiking experience. Sadly they have cleared alot of the land so its not as private as it used to be. But still love to visit.
