Made a stop by Chekos today for lunch. I used to live close by and it was one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants. The restaurant is pretty much the same as I remember since my last visit but the surrounding area has transmorphed into high density residential housing, apartments and new businesses. Anyhow, the #6 lunch special is to die for. The chicken tastes like its barbecued, spicy chipotle seasoning, freshness throughout the entire dish. You cant go wrong. Chekos does it right.
Good, friendly, and inexpensive. I went with 6 other people. The waitress made recommendations so that means she eats there. She made real effort to accommodate my gluten free friend. The service was reasonably fast. In spite of the size of our group everything was hot and arrived at the same time. Bonus you get individual salsas. No double dipping worries.
Cheko’s is tucked away on a busy stretch of Koenig Lane but well worth the stop.Cheko’s has a fairly traditional looking menu but I found the flavors to be truly unique in this land of great TexMex we call Austin.Friendly staff with great service that can get you in and out if you are tight on time.
Friendly service and fresh flavorful food. I will return to try other items. Their salsa is delicious with fresh ingredients and their chips are lite and crunchy which i enjoy. Their picadillo is good with cubed potatoes. The beef enchiladas didnt taste like traditional ones however they were tasty and I would order it again. I really enjoyed the taco shell as it tastes homemade and a similar crunch like the chips. This spot is reasonably priced. I didnt care for the plastic utensils provided for dine in service ((the cheap version was a challenge to eat my enchiladas with)) but definitely not a deal breaker.
Went for a weekday lunch with my husband to this restaurant. I was hoping for a good margarita but they didnt have a drink menu so I settled for a beer. I ordered the picadillo enchiladas and once I started to eat them I noticed the meat was pink. The lady behind the counter was nice but I dont think Id visit this place again.
Such a great restaurant. As soon as you walk in youre brought back to your early childhood where all new food is amazing. The quality of the food is amazing and the workers are the nicest and most attentive people youll ever meet. Its a family run restaurant which means its their livelihood and they use do show it. I would recommend anyone looking for authentic TEXMEX food to make a visit here.
I was really excited to try Chekos after reading the reviews but unfortunately I was disappointed. My partner ordered a fajita burrito and I had the beef enchiladas with Ranchero sauce. The burrito was very sad...legit looked like a Taco Bell burrito, I don’t even think the tortilla had been warmed. My enchilada sauce had absolutely no flavor. I do think they were understaffed, I came in at 7:30pm on a Friday and there were only two workers in the front that were very busy. We had to ask for things twice and they forgot to give us our queso appetizer so we ended up getting it after our food came after reminding them. I do think the margaritas are great for $3.50 but sadly that was all.
I only ate take out, so I will amend my rating if I make it in for sit down at some point.Otherwise: Decent food, but a little over priced. The salsas were flavorful, but I wasnt impressed with the guacamole. I had the Chekos special and the pork was nice and crispy, although a bit dry.
I actually went to pick my order up this time. I waited outside 2 mins after my order was complete.I went in, said i had an order for pick up and showed the big girl behind the service counter my order/confirmation number. She was unsure of where/what my order was. Tried to take my phone to see the order. Which i denied and continued to show her my order. When she finally realized it was the one sitting right on the counter she gave it to me and walked away to the back. No thank you come again or sorry for the confusion I order at least once a week but after that, Ive had enough. twice we got burnt fries, egg shells in breakfast tacos, and completely wrong childrens order. No more Chekos for me.
Chekos hosted our familys birthday lunch today and the customer service was absolutely AMAZING. Top that off with their delicious authentic Mexican food, what more could you ask for?! I had their bistec a la Mexicana plate and the meat was so tender and savory. My husband had the beef fajita enchiladas and he ate that up within minutes! No complaints! The owners daughter Maria was the sweetest and made sure we were all well taken care of. This is such a a wonderful family owned business, you can taste the love they put into their food and their love for their customers! Try them out! I promise you wont be disappointed!
Good Tex-Mex food, inexpensive meals, generous portions. Great little place to stop in for a lunch break. Their tomato based salsa is really good. Bathrooms were really clean the last time I was there, and thats always a good sign. Worth a shot if you havent eaten here yet.
I went around 11:30 the atmosphere was quite with Spanish music playing in the background it wasn’t to loud which was nice. The wait staff were two very nice women. I ordered the menudo which was amazing and made from scratch. I noticed they were very prompt on cleaning tables and waiting on their tables. I highly recommend this place. I’ve missed it a thousand times and decided to try it out. Perfect spot for this area because now I don’t have to go further north or east to get authentic Mexican food.
Ive passed by this restaurant for almost 3 years. Today I decided to check it out and was not disappointed! Great salsa!!! Im a vegetarian and substitute beans instead of meat in my tacos. Most of the time refried beans are bland at other restaurants but these refried beans are the best Ive ever had!!!! And the crunchy tacos are made fresh. The service was fast even during the lunch rush. Prices are reasonable too. I will definitely be back!!!!
My new favorite place to go before bowling. The salsa taste fresh and spicy. The entrees are delicious and inexpensive. The service can be a bit spotty, but the people are so nice you dont care. I had a combo plate with 2 meats, beans, and rice. So much to eat that it lasted 2+ meals.
Unfortunately, the food was lacking any spices or anything that I would consider Tex Mex..I ordered the enchiladas, couldn’t eat them, just no flavor, hubby had a Taco Salad with a soggy taco shell. Sorry, y’all need to spice things up. Won’t be coming back😢Very nice staff, good service, just no Tex Mex flavor.
Delicious food and very quaint Mexican restaurant. First time here and I liked the vibe. The people were friendly and the service was great. The reason why its getting a 3 star is because the the cheese enchiladas that we ordered were good but the ranchero sauce tasted like tomato sauce. And the cheese tasted like mozzarella cheese. I know its just the way they make it but we didnt like it so much. Dont get me wrong it was still delicious. Just different than what were use to.
I drive past this place every morning on my way to work and finally decided to stop today. One thing I can say is I definitely regret not stopping by sooner. Staff was really friendly and made feel at home. Food was absolutely delicious as well. This will be my new spot to spend a few minutes before I go in to work.
My husband and I have been to this restaurant two times now. The first time it was excellent, the food and service was great. This second time, we went on Mother’s Day, the food was awesome! But our server kinda sucked. She did not check on us, we had to find her to ask for Togo boxes and then when we checked out she charged us for four horchatas... I had one glass and my husband had two... I’m cool with paying for refills, but we only got one refill. So, if you go to Chekos makes sure you check your ticket before you pay, you may be getting overcharged..
First time I came to Chekos was because a friend brought us after moving to Austin from San Antonio. The food was super delicious I got a tortilla soup and I’ve also had the chicken enchiladas and the chicken flautas all delicious as well. My favorite drink is the Jamaica water. The waitresses here are always nice and welcoming. Always give us their full attention. They are also open right now during Covid19 and they are having you order at the front counter before you sit down and drinks and utensils are disposable. Don’t miss out and come eat safely.
I used to be a regular but moved away....revisited this Sunday....so disappointing! Prices increased but the food wasnt as flavorful! they had my FAVORITE green salsa...it wasnt even close! hopefully it was just an off day...cos they are so delicious in my memories!! I really wish that they went out of their way to be polite and efficient, but was instead given bad attitude and very difficult ordering .
I would have previously given Chekos 5 stars, but unfortunately after our visit today it only qualifies as a two. My wife and I have visited this restaurant and had many great experiences before so it is with a heavy heart that I grade it so lowly. The customer service was good, but our food was incorrect, lacking in flavour and tepid. The combination plate was missing a protein and somehow one of my chicken enchiladas was disguised as a cheesy one! It seems that the quality has reduced since the previous manager, Jose, left and we left sorely disappointed. We miss him and we may not return.
Found this little hole in the wall on Google bc my best friend wanted margaritas at noon (bad day lol), & I am so glad I did!! It was so delicious, the people were so so sweet. I even brought my mom in here when she visited from San Antonio bc of how great my first experience was. The second experience was just as good, if not better! The Chile relleno was great, & so is the taco plate.Margaritas of course were delicious. ;)
Had the chicken flautas... wasn’t the best I’ve had... the tortilla was super crunchy... the beans were salty... customer service is great just that the food isn’t that good... music was amazing.( they had Bryndis, temerarios, los caminantes and other Mexican artists)
LOVE THIS PLACE. Been here twice so far and love it. Iv gotten the Carne Guisada and the Carne Asada...both delicious. They have the best chips and salsa ever! Also usually not a big bean fan but i do like there beans. SO GOOD! Besides the food being good the staff was attentive and very nice. :) Ill be back for more!
I enjoy the staff here. I find the quesadillas to be the perfect comfort food. Theres nothing overtly special about the Tex-Mex here, but its a decent little nieghboorhood joint. I appreciate their late hours and take out availability. You can also order from their standard menu for to-go orders as Ive experienced several times.
Customer service is well needed in this place for sure. I ordered a fajita nachos and got mostly beans just all over hardly no fajitas and they were so little. I must of got the last batch of the fajitas being only lunch time that I ordered them. I wont order nachos anymore there. 😐☹
Very cheap drinks, very cheap food, very delicious. Really the only way to describe it. Their happy hour pricing goes from 3-10 pm. Dollar pints of Dos Equis and 3.50 margaritas. Something to be aware of - they really like jalapeno. Its fresh so it isnt quite as strong flavor wise but they leave the seeds to add some punch.
This is a cool hole in the wall type you cant miss. They have options for every type of appetite but also the price us right. The food quality is genuinely high, even tho its simple, am its a great alternative for breakfast cafés because the breakfast is one of my favorites on Sunday. The breakfast tacos are delicious and very affordable.
The food isnt that great and neither is the service. The staff outnumbered the customers yet they still couldnt get my order straight and they stood around blabbering at each other while my order waited on the counter.I can cook better than these clowns. Heck, even Taco Cabana is better. Do yourself a favor - Go some place else!
I was a little disappointed by the food here, it was lacking the flavor and textures I go to Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurants for. Especially the queso. It’s always sad when the queso isn’t good, that’s always my favorite part of the meal 😩 the service is fine however, friendly and attentive. Doesn’t mean much when you’re coming for the food though.
I LOVE Chekos. This is the only place I know of that has $1 Dos Equis Pints - which may only occur on Fridays now and $1.50 all the other days (still an amazing deal). Their food is so delicious and ridiculously cheap. You have to get the beef fajita nachos or beef fajita burrito. Its definitely a hidden gem, but a great place for cheap/good drinks, food and a casual atmosphere.
Delicious menudo for a reasonable price, friendly staff make you feel like youre sitting at your abuelas house for lunch, great salsas, the flautas are big and crunchy, and the shrimp ranchero is amazing!! Queso is velvety & perfectly seasoned. The only thing is they wont mix & match enchilada fillings/sauces on the enchilada plate.
We attempted to assist a homeless person by buying some food for him. not himself paying but, we were going to pay. The owner or the manager on duty told us never to do that again. I would have turned around and taken my business elsewhere if I didnt have another group of people with me. We bless those who are less fortunate. Members of management should do the same if were the ones that are paying what does it matter whether a homeless person is able to order or not? You are still getting the ordered paid.
Did you know that its illegal to force patrons to pay for water at an establishment that serves food? I explained this to them as I am an Uber food driver and do not have a whole lot of time to stop for water in-between deliveries. The woman was non-understandig and I had just picked up a delivery from them. And they still wanted me to pay 50 cents for the cup. Water is free on demand for the first cup. Its called a courtesy cup. Do not come here the staff is rude. And the refuse to serve water to anyone without them buying something. That is illegal and dangerous for people who have medical conditions.
This is my spot! I have literally been here 100 times, and it has been excellent every single time. Part of me hopes the masses keep going to Enchiladas y Mas, because I love being able to get a table and a Dos Equis draft within seconds every time I visit. If youre open on what to get, try the carne guisada!
I just ordered 7 barbacoa tacos, and this was hands down the slimiest, stickiest, greasiest, and by god do i say SALTIEST tacos ive ever eaten.I only had one and my co worker could only bear 2 because we had no choice, and our lunch time was already over.I would not recomend this place, at all.Tacos should not be THAT salty and have that much slimage. The red salsa is just tomato paste with cilantro and the green salsa is not spicy or tastey in the least.I wasted my money and will go hungry the rest of my work day.Sad.
The breakfast and/or brunch tacos of barbacoa and pastor are fantastic!!! With fresh cut lime and green creme salsa, the tacos will change your life. Trust. Chekos is also wonderful in being your go to for great lunch specials (flautas are my fave)! Sunday funday margs and micheladas are LIFE. Check Chekos out!
I have been here so many times and always leave full and satisfied. For the price you can not beat the meals you get and have always received good service. Ive done takeout a few times and they always have my order ready fast. The quality of food is good for the price but dont go in expecting something super amazing. This place is perfect if you want cheap, good quality tex mex. I will keep coming back for sure
A family friend recommended this place a few months ago because of the awesome gorditas. I decided to check it out and almost turned back because the place looked a little sketchy but Im so glad I didnt. They honestly have some of the best Mexican food Ive ever had! Plus, they are super cheap! A huge gordita that fills up a plate costs only $3.25! Plus, they have happy from from 3-10 p.m. with $1 Dos XX and Budlight drafts. The place is small and the waiters dont always pay too much attention but the taste of the food and the price makes up for it. Definitely one of my favorite places in Austin!
This is the kind of place you hope sticks around for awhile despite how much Austin is changing.Chekos is sort of a neighborhood hole in the wall classic with a lot of regulars. Its just a fun environment between the colorful, kitschy decor, the karaoke, and, of course, the incredibly cheap drink and food prices. Service has generally been quite good when Ive been there. Food quality seems to vary per item on the menu, but the Carne Asada works for me.Sure, there are much pricier places with better, fancier food... but sometimes all you really want is the low-rent charm and good times Chekos delivers.
Very good Mexican food. It comes off as a very authentic place. I ordered a vegetarian taco salad. They put avocado, sour cream and beans. It was very good. They gave me two sauces, the red salsa wasnt too hot, but the Verde had some kick and lots of flavor. You should try this place out. They also have 1.00 dos equis beer from 1 - 4pm.Yesterday I tried the Chile Relleno (Cheese). They had quite a bit of kick. Im used to a more mild chili, however it was still very good. The homemade corn tortillas were very good. Im glad they serve water in the big glasses.5/21/2014 Try the Checkos Burrito with Avocado filling, its so good!
I havent been in a while but I never had a bad experience before. My order was wrong and service was slow. You could tell that our server did not want to be there that day. I was disappointed because I talked so highly of the place and met my friend for lunch there. She wasnt impressed, bad first impression.
I would only give the food okay here. The menu seemed like normal tex mex at first, but diversity was incredibly hard to find. Vegetables were MIA as even diced tomato or onion rarely showed up. If youre looking for rice, refried beans, and meat, theyve certainly got you covered though.Come for a basket of chips and the $4 margs, but consider a full dinner experience from another Mexican joint nearby.
Get yourself in here at any time between 3PM and 10PM for $1.50 beers and freakin good nachos. These are the closest thing I have found to the traditional Mexican Panchos with deep fried tortilla wedges (not those flimsy things they try to pass off as nachos nearly everywhere else) covered in gratuitous amounts of cheese. Get them with fajitas, you do yourself a disservice every time you go for ground beef (and I mean that universally).
Mole. Yum. Nice folks. Good food. Ive lived here all my life - 46 years, and this reminds me of the great, simple, but good, TexMex places there used to be more of. Hate to do the it used to be better thing, but Austins TexMex scene has become a little sad. Gueros? Please.

2022-02-23Had a weeknight dinner at Chekos and we loved the food. There was only one server working several tables but she did an excellent job of getting everything out quickly. The micheladas were perfect and the margs were good too. I will say this place is a little on the pricey side but at least the food and drinks didn’t disappoint.

2022-07-19Family owned business. Excellent customer service. The owners are hands on; friendly and welcoming. Most importantly, the food is excellent and the prices are reasonable. The atmosphere and the decor is very basic; definitely gave me the vibe of the traditional restaurants I visited in my multiple visits to Mexico. One side note; we had a waitress who seemed to be new at her job. Lets just say, that portion of the experience was a disappointing. But overall, I love the place.

2022-06-10Havent been there for a while and *would* go again, but found the margaritas (weak, sweet) and tortilla soup (a bit boring/ salty but bland) to be disappointing despite affordability. 🤷♀️ To each their own!Nothing was wrong in terms of service or setting. Convenient location.I could order something different next time, but didnt understand why my one friend is such a fan...Then again, he really liked Hats Creek food. 😅

2022-06-15Good service. For a taqueria type restaurant, this place aint bad at all. Food out in very reasonable time - big selection. Portion size is good.

2022-05-16Ok. Where to start… I order two burritos with jalapeños. One carne asada and the other el pastor. She came back to me 10 minutes after ordering to tell me they were out of jalapeños. Let me say that again. A restaurant… as in a building that is dedicated to serving Mexican food… not a truck, not a trailer, not a cart… a business that only serves Mexican food is out of jalapeños?!?!?! I seriously just dropped this score from 2 to 1 stars because of how asinine that sounds when I say it out loud. They take 20 minutes even though it’s 3pm and. On one was ahead of us. When we get the burritos home we realize we can’t just unwind the foil from around them as we eat them because they couldn’t be bothered to use a burrito sized four tortilla. Instead they used three smaller tortillas to hold it together and that was an utter failure. What we had was a burrito mess on a plate. Not a tidy hand held delight we were hoping for. It tasted ok.One star for taste I guess.Zero stars from promptnessZero stars for obvious available ingredientsZero stars for presentationZero stars for communication.

2022-06-01Im so disappointed, we have ordered from here before and it was really tasty and this time it was not good at all. They gave me the wrong food (a regular burrito instead of the fajita burrito). The burrito they did give me had no flavor and was mostly beans and hot lettuce. I dont think we will be ordering from here again

2020-09-20This is the most welcoming place Ive been to in years. It definitely feels like you are part of the family there. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted, told where the menu was, where to place the order and to sit anywhere wed like.It was an older couple working the front. They primarily spoke Spanish, but also spoke some English. There were two other tables and from the interactions between the staff and tables, we thought they were regulars. It turns out they werent, the couple there is just that welcoming.Weve been to many restaurants with friendly, attentive staff, but the atmosphere of this place makes you feel at home...like you are visiting relatives. The food was good, especially the guacamole. The serving was HUGE and it was only $3! I highly recommend it. Oh, the bathrooms are super clean!!

2018-09-25Fantastic Tex-Mex place in north central Austin. Kinda tucked away but it is an absolute gem. Great prices, great food, friendly service. I had the Al Pastor Torta and it was absolutely delicious. My rice and beans were also fantastic. The salsa served with chips tastes very fresh, has a nice amount of spice and is overall super tasty. I would 100% recommend this place to anybody.
