Always a great place to dine! Take out is great too! Food is ALWAYS made fresh. Their foundation drinks are crisp and fizzy! Salsa I could drink by the gallon and prices are reasonable! They also serve alcohol and you could sit at the bar if you desire. Are you needing to plan an event of some sort? If so they have a private room upstairs for that as well. Staff is always friendly and quick to serve you. Atmosphere is laid-back and you are welcome to come just as you are! Also very clean and I appreciate that with everything going on now of days with health issues of all kinds! I feel like family when we come there to dine!
We stopped in at the steakhouse next door, it was boarded up. But next door was El San Luis and I was open. Best mistake of the week. The food was great and our waitress was helpful and sweet. The chips and salsa was fine. There was nothing wrong with the standard salsa... but if you are looking for something with more kick, more fuego, mas Diablo, they have a great green sauce, and my favorite, a sauce made with chiles de arbol.
The food and the atmosphere are great, the only negatives are they have no problem seating you at a table that has not been cleared or cleaned yet. All of the glasses have been clean but keep an eye on the silverware. I have eaten here 14 times and will be going back.
Stopping here because Jalapeno Tree was full and boy was this place a disappointment! The wait staff was nice but slow, the chips were cold and stale, the hot sauce taste like puree tomatoes and cilantro, the queso was extremely watered down and flavorless. We waited on our food in hopes it would be better just to get a beautiful plate of flavorless disappointment.. Dont waste your time here!
Excellent food and top notch service. The taco salad with fajita steak is excellent, with the beans even better and a delicious margarita to top it off is an excellent suggestion. Try the nachos you want be sorry. Sorry didnt manage to get a photo of the nachos, they was just that good. My third visit, will be back for takeout or sit down, very soon.
Visiting from Dallas , stopped only because the building next door said Steak House but wasn’t open. So we went next door to El San Luis. I love me some queso but theirs was watered down. Waitress was nice. I haven’t seen any people in Athens wearing mask so I assume the coronavirus isn’t in Athens Texas.
The experience was terrible! If a zero star could be given it would. Food was messed up, server was terrible and knew nothing about the menu or alcoholic drinks, couldnt even say what drinks were happy hour!!!!! I asked of margaritas were available on take out, server said yes, male bartender refused to make the drinks!!! First time to go and most definitely will be the last.
It came highly recommended but not sure why. Their fried ice cream was corn flake coated. So if you like that sort of cooking youll like this place. Waiter was a little disorganized but did bring the food out. This place is probably the best of what is available. If youre only eating once in Athens Id probably skip this place and go to Mcallisters. Just depends what youre in the mood for.
Wow parking lot was full and i got my hopes up for some good food...My family and I were not impressed at all with the food. The wait staff was nice. They did however bring a cup to refill our drink that was so obviously dirty it was unreal. Fyi their barbacoa is not true barbacoa and it was flavorless and dry. Amd they do not care about food allergies enough to make sure they dont make someone sick.
We returned to see if the service had improved since our August/2016 review that was rated a 1 star. Tonight we were pleased to have excellent service & food. We were escorted to the table, given menus & our drink orders were taken. The employee at the register was keeping an eye on the customers & making sure the staff were on their toes! Our order was taken & shortly returned with the order correctly. The food was excellent! The only minor issues was the margarita machine was not turned on but it didnt take much time for the mixture to freeze. I didnt recognize the staff as being the same as the one that didnt take care of us last time. We plan to return frequently.
By far the worst dining experience Ive ever had. Margaritas were very sour. Carne asada was so tough it couldnt be cut with the knife provided. Salsa was bland and tasted like pureed tomatoes. Barbacoa tasted like sausage and pastor tasted like buffalo sauce. I suggest you try Mariscos.
Im not sure if I can really rate properly yet. Was passing through town from Dallas flight. I usually stop at one of my favorite Mexican Restaurants anywhere but they were closed. It was stormy and started to just go on home to Lake Palestine but decided to give this a shot. Had a nice Margherita and an Enchalada special. There was a mistake on order but server corrected it right away. It was all good but Im a bit spoiled by the other place. That said we all have different taste and it was certainly good enough I would go again
Its a big place so you rarely have to wait for a table. Friendly staff, good service. It is a very solid Mexican food option. I have been here a few times and its been good every time. The atmosphere is laid back, not too noisy for a conversation over lunch or dinner. Prices are very reasonable.
Just stopped in to see how it compared to the other Mexican food places in town. Wait staff were prompt and service was good. I had the chicken enchiladas and they were tasty. The plate was hot as fire but, once it cooled I was able to enjoy the food. I will definitely be back.
Wow is all I can say. I love Mexican food. I was visiting Athens area because my dad is moving there. Im from Louisiana and have eaten at alot of Mexican restaurants in my area. This one by far is the best. I will definitely make that 2 and half hour drive to eat here again and bring my husband and daughter. The waiter was very nice. Its clean.
So my dad an bro an I went here to eat. The food is great an the staff is awesome. One nice we asked the owners son if he could find the stars Game on TV he said yes so he looked couldnt find the channel so three more staff members tried to find the channel. We didnt get to watch the game but it was nice to see a family oriented restaurant go to the To to make customers happy.I love it here.
From the moment you walk in the staff greats you with a smile as if you are truly wanted there. The chips and salsa were fresh and replenished freshly as we got to bottom of bowl. 2 people at our table had special combination request and the waitress assured us she could get it with no problem. It was a busy day but our food came out in a reasonable time, hot and fresh and correctly. My friend had the Luis salad..OMG. It was enough for 2 people to share!! I a Charo bean lover..the beans here were amazing. Price are very reasonable. Will definitely return.
Have been to this place since they first started up in a hole in the wall, now look at it!! Great job guys! I only gave 3☆s due to prices went up quite a bit from where they started. I really really think this is why its not so crowded anymore. Mostly a lot of alcohol drinkers which is a lil annoying at times when you come in with your children. Food needs to be changed back to when they first started with full plates for a good price. Now you have to buy what use to come with the plate. 🤦♀️
Pretty good service and food. Every time has been great service. Usually half full of patrons. Fajitas (chicken) are served with onions, bell peppers and small guacamole and sour cream along with okay rice and refried beans. They have 4 Televisions on sports or news..
El San Luis has fantastic food. The hot sauce is great, and the combo torta is delicious. Their fajitas are outstanding. My husband gets a top shelf margarita that is on point, while I prefer their grey goose dirty martinis. The tacos on corn tortillas are also so good. I havent had a meal there that I didnt like. If you are in Athens it is definitely worth stopping and having a meal. Also, be sure to try the ranchero beans.
The best on the rocks margarita in East Texas. It is perfect. The queso is great, the salsa is great and the guacamole is great. Ive had a number of things on The menu and liked all of them. I always leave here full and happy. I honestly could just chips and dips here and leave happy. So good. Best Mexican food around.
Just arrived at around 6:30 and took them nearly 30 minutes to just to take our drink orders and deliver our drinks. We asked the waitress for butter as we were seated at our table with hotsauce and chips immediately upon arrival but waited just for drink orders to be served and taken. We were CONSTANTLY over looked by the staff with our unpleasant faces. Around 7 we got our drinks and butter. The two tables who came in behind us were already served with hot food and beverages as we were over looked. I usually enjoy this place but today it had a lot to be desired.
Service was great. Our waitress, Kara, was on top of it and this is a very busy time here. The food was good and very hot. It was a solid roar of noise with all the kids and adults trying to talk over the noise. This was not unexpected and was okay. After a bit it quieted way down and was good. Overall a good experience every time we come here.
Best Mexican food in Athens in our experience. Menu has a nice variety with home-style flavors and dishes. Excellent drinks with a wide variety from a full bar. There are 5 tvs to entertain those who want to watch any one of the sports games on that day. Service is always prompt without being pushy. Chips and salso are free with ordering an entree.
My wife and I read the reviews and are always on the hunt for decent Mexican food. We tried out their breakfast first and were seriously disappointed. We were the only patrons when we arrived at 0830. We were ushered to a table by an unhappy host and found the table dirty. Host vanished so we waited and waited for his return so he could wipe off our table. Again... WE WERE THE ONLY CUSTOMERS IN THE PLACE! Finally had our orders taken and waited at least 20 minutes for our lackluster breakfasts to be brought out. Wife had a chorizo and egg burrito that had mere specs of chorizo and was loaded instead with the potato add on. We wondered how pathetic the burrito must look without the potato. I chose the traditional huevos rancheros. No good at all and looked devoid of any effort putting it together. Refried beans are the worst weve had in Texas, seriously. Watery, no seasoning, almost a medicinal flavor. Weve had better refried beans out of a can.Because we were the only patrons in the establishment for breakfast, we figured word was out that this place just does a suck breakfast and we didnt get the memo. So we decided to try them for dinner the following week.Wife ordered beef tacos and didnt care for the just average tacos. Whats with the ground beef being served and not shredded beef? We had ordered a side of guacamole and found it to be bland as hell and severely over-priced at $2.99. Our booth backed up to another and we overheard that couple comment to their server that they were insulted by the price and quantity of their guacamole and instructed him to remove it from their table and take it off the bill.I had the skirt steak. Served with the traditional Mexican sides but with the same nasty translucent refried beans. The steak was seasoned nicely but was tougher than I expected. My jaw grew tired before I could finish it. My waiter offered the skirt steak as regular or spicy. I realized after getting the bill that he charged me .99 for the spicey option. Sure it wont break the bank but mentioning that during the ordering is only proper. When we went to the register to pay our bill I asked the non- English speaking cashier to add a butterfinger candy bar to my bill. She just gave us a goofy look and giggled. So, I said it a second time and got the same reaction which we recognize as Spanish for what the hell are you saying? Our suspicions were confirmed when I then proceeded to leave with the candy bar... she stopped me and said $1.50. Omg. Get some training honey. In closing, this restuarant is lacking in professional employee training. With the exception of the female at the register this place has only Male employees. They not only need to improve their attitude but actually learn the job expected of them.We wont be back and I suspect theyll be under inside of two years.
Not the Mexican food Im used to. No seasoning, dry, tasteless and whats that little corn tortilla with movie theater nacho sauce? Wife thought it was adequate, but not my taste at all. Enchiladas are not baked, simply ground beef wrapped in a cold corn tortilla and sauce poured over it.
Food was good but the service was horrible and im not one of those high maintenance demanding customers! All i ask for are the basics like my water glass and my beer to not be empty for 10 mins but apparently that was to difficult for the useless waitress i had the unfortunate luck of being stuck with! I normally wouldnt hold the establishment as a whole responsible for one persons lack of care or effort but since no compensation or concern was offered then unfortunately i wont be back! Descent tex mex places are a dime a dozen, ill take my money elsewhere!
Big portions. My dad got the #1 lunch plate, it was super cheap with a lot of food on the plate. I got the Baloñas plate that comes with 2 pork tamales and a beef enchilada. Tamales had great pulled pork and the enchilada was good. The sopapilla we were served for dessert was tasteless. It was like fried canned biscuit dough. The waitress we had wasnt that good. She had one other table besides us. She filled our drinks and asked if we needed anything only once. So El San Luis has got its goods and bads. 🤔
This is the restaurant to go to in Athens Texas. We asked the waitress what was good and she told us that honestly, everything is. She was right. I had the Tacos al carbon and my wife had street tacos with tortilla soup. A great selection. And then, we each got a sopapilla that was to die for!
I have been going to El San Luis since they opened downtown, off of the square. From the get-go they were a tribute to another tex-mex restaurant in Athens, but never seemed to match the flavor. They are clean and quick and have decent food, but if you want the next level, look around.

2022-05-16The best! Ive ordered take out Tacos for 10 and 15 ppl for my business. Both times they have done a fabulous job! They literally separated every single side that you put on tacos, all in separated containers so that the food doesnt get soggy! And to top it off, the food is GREAT!! The manager is who Ive placed my order with both times And I couldnt be more pleased!

2022-02-16Party of 10. Service was very good and food was also pretty good . We had attended a basketball tournament and didnt arrive until 8:15. They close at 9PM. Would have rated a 5 but once we got our food, out came mops, buckets, cleaning supplies being sprayed everywhere. I understand but didnt appreciate.

2022-04-12We enjoyed this restaurant. The food was good, salsa and chips are great, and our server did a wonderful job despite the fact it was extremely busy. We were able to find vegetarian-friendly dishes on the menu, and thats always a plus for our family. The only hiccup we had was that our bill did not come out correctly for the items that we ordered, however, this was probably due to the fact that the server was new. The lady at the front corrected this for us. Also and item on a takeout order that we had did not initially make it to our takeout bag, but this was also corrected. Again, it was an extremely busy night and the house was packed.

2022-06-04The salsa was very good and the beef enchilada was good. The service was good but, the tamale was the worst tamale I believe I’ve ever had. Instead of minced meat it had tough, pulled pork in it and the masa was dry and a little hard on the ends like it had been sitting under a light or something. That’s why I gave only 3 stars.

2022-04-03Best tacos ever! Their other food is great too, but their tacos are amazing. Service is always good, even when they are super busy.
