Previously there was a pawn shop here but serendipitously End of an Ear moved here to a great space. They have a great selection of new and used vinyl, CDS and used DVD/VHS. The also carry a great selection of new and used turn tables and speakers. Its a place for new or veteran vinyl lovers! Great local shop
Great gem of a record store, friendly staff and a really good selection of all types of music. Organized well and clean. Came for some electronic and experimental music and wasnt disappointed. A little on the nose as far as price points for some of the newer titles now that vinyl is making a comeback but that didnt stop me.
Ive been to a lot of record stores across the country-- Ive lived in places like Pittsburgh, Richmond, Dallas, and Cleveland, and frankly, nothing comes close to this place. The selection is out of this world good. Im talking like... walk in, find 5 of your favorite records, and buy them without thinking twice good. I have various musical interests, but deep down, Im a Warped Tour kid, and obviously one of their buyers is too, because the only problem with this place is walking out without spending over $100 every time you walk in.Every time Im there its something different-- Ive found rare pressings of Blink-182 records like Buddha, emo gems like The Academy Is.... Almost Here, Indie Exclusive pressings from Weezer, Twenty One Pilots, and some lesser-known records that have made me audibly gasp when I see them, like The Promise Ring or Oso Oso.The staff is also super friendly-- Ive asked for recommendations and Ive gotten them no problem. They also have an extensive back-room I only just discovered, where they sell gear like turntables and speakers. I needed a cartridge replacement for an old record player, and they helped me pick one out right before the store closed, which I couldnt have been more thankful for. Before I lived in Austin, Id make the trip here from Dallas once every few months, and End of an Ear was always on the list of places I HAD to go before leaving. Its one of my favorite record stores in the country, and Id highly recommend it as a stop for anyone who has an even remotely good taste in music.
Pretty good selection for a small store. I was able to find stuff I was interested in. I would even go as far as to say this store is better than overrated Waterloo. Especially since the staff at End of an Ear isnt so uptight and controlling over mask rules like the staff at Waterloo.
My favorite record store in terms of unique curated selection. When I say favorite, I mean of all-time, not just in Austin and in recent years. A little lacking in Jazz. I regularly find unexpected new and used finds from the esoteric to the more common. The staff are excellent. They break the stereotype of the apathetic record store staff.
I absolutely love End of an Ear. Been shopping since 2013 when they were on South 1st. The employees are all friendly and helpful. The used section is well curated. The equipment section is awesome too. They have been a life saver during quarantine. Give them all your money!
Love this place. I come here mostly for metal records and the convenience of their location for me. If I cant find a metal record, they will either have it or be able to order it from their supplier. Just for reference, they have a slightly smaller selection than Waterloo. The staff are always friendly and helpful. Be sure to check in the back if youre looking for something that is obscure or could be considered rare, they keep those nice and safe in the back.
My fave local record store. The owners have been selling records for longer than Ive been in town (15+ years) and have a huge selection - everything from pop and folk (for me) and weird and obscure (for the husband). During Covid theyve kept us updated on inventory through Instagram (which is how the husband recently scored a Zappa album he was super geeked about) and offer safe curbside pickup. In a weird time when businesses are struggling to conform to the new post-covid world, these guys have managed to evolve and keep the music available to their customers. Definitely one of the best places in Austin.
Excellent place to search for vinyl records new and old. WIDE selection of genres to choose from. Good selection of DVDs to pick from if you choose. They buy all media back for a descent price. Just dont expect them to buy back that scratched up Limp Biscuit CD you have sitting inn the back of a closet. Great place to kill time searching through all the decently priced vinyls. Definitely a place to visit for out of town record collectors.
This really is the best record store in Austin. I know its subjective and based on your music preferences but they truly have a great selection in almost all styles of music. Im a fan of jazz, and they consistently have a great used and new selection and there are deals to be had on some of the older original pressings.
This place rocks! They are careful to stock only playable records and most all of the vinyl I inspected were pristine. Got to be the best place to buy used vinyl at gr8 quality in Austin-possibly central Texas. All the staff are cool and very personable and helpful- they actually seem like they like their jobs! Plenty of audiophile 180 gram records as well. I could burn hours in there and probably blaze thru $200/$300 easily. Thanks for being so cool guys!
Quality record store. Has tons of new releases. Less mark up than Waterloo Records but not as good of cheap selection like Antones Records. They will call in orders for you to pick up at a later date. They also have live music ocassionally, mostly for new local releases.Theres a stereo equipment shop in the back that does repairs as well. The gear is vintage and fair priced. This is my go-to record shop for newly released records.
Unlike most of the others End of an Ear is staying a Mail Order company or shop by appointment, which works if youre a local. Waterloo, Breakaway, Piranha, Daves Vintage and others have opened. Buying records by mail order is like buying mp3s. No feeling to it, everything is very cardboard.
Third favorite record store in Austin only because Austin only has three record stores. Its a hit or miss on CDs , more likely miss if you are looking for a specific CD, . They do have good deals on what they do have so thats a hit.Hopefully more people will bring in their old CDs .Vinyl section is very good, plenty of new and used recordsI had to change my review up a bit and lower my initial thoughts and star rating to 3 and that is being generous considering my latest encounter .Up front the staff is friendly but in the back the staff is constantly complaining about customers and how they are mistreated by a selected few ( not professional). I waited 15 minutes waiting on the staff to stop complaining before I finally had the good sense of leaving .
I admittedly am not an expert on vinyl, however these guys are super helpful and are willing to help you get your gear working. They have a great selection and are constantly getting new inventory. I purchase most of my vinyl from end of an ear. If you go to the back of the store they usually have mystery boxes for like $5. Most of the records will be awful but sometimes ill find a real jewel. Definitely worth a stop if you have time to really browse for great music.
I wish there was a way to set up a direct deposit to End of an Ear so I could just transfer over my entire paycheck every payday in exchange for vinyl records. No, but seriously the vinyl selection is vast & meticulously organized. This is home base for me & highly recommended for any vinyl enthusiast or music lover.
They had a good selection, and the artist-sorted racks were set up nicely with used and new records in the same spots, so if youre looking for something specific, itll be easy to find.I found some good deals in their dollar records bins, even though everything in there was still $3-$5, and did not appear to be cleaned up at all. Their entire new arrivals rack, which they had told me were all used, seemed to be priced $15 and up, and that seemed a little odd.The strangest thing about the place was the record they were playing over the main speakers the whole time I was in there. It was some sort of really, really dark experimental stuff that made the atmosphere in there very uncomfortable. I listen to my fair share of metal and experimental rock, but something so unnerving seemed an odd choice for a store that (I assume) wants customers to browse their selection for a while and find stuff they want to buy.Overall its a nice shop with a lot of records, and they seemed to have a lot of rarer stuff that will appeal to a lot of collectors, but to be honest, the uncomfortable atmosphere in the place made me not want to go back. The minute I stepped outside the store, the world seemed like a happier place. Im sure I just picked the wrong day to go.
The coolest record store in Austin is tucked in right off of highway 290 next to a little office park. They always have friendly staff and the store is set up perfectly for someone to wander into something they werent initially looking for. Go get lost at End of an Ear!
Awesome record store that was recommended to me by the owner of the AirBnB I was staying at while on vacation. They have a huge selection of records, CDs, equipment and other items. The prices are pretty good in comparison to other shops Ive seen and the staff was super friendly.
I would give this store a 10 out of 5 if it were possible. Dan is amazingly responsive over e-mail in spite of the fact that his store is always packed. Even when I found something on Discogs in their possession, or saw an item in very limited supply listed in their newsletter, they were willing to pull and hold it for me to pick up and purchase in person! When I purchased a turntable from their shop and found it to be a bit out of adjustment, they not only took my table back for replacement, but found me another even better table in their stock to take right then and there. Their prices are reasonable (especially for used items), and they frequently mark down new items. The employees are helpful, funny, and knowledgeable. No snobbery about what youre buying from them, and the variety of tunes they play for in-store music always keeps me interested. I moved from across the country and didnt think Id find a place like this that would make me feel so welcome...thankfully, Ive found it here!
A truly amazing shop! well curated, fairly priced, with helpful and kind staff. they have a great mix of new and used records, and a very comfortable browsing atmosphere. this shop was well recommended to us, as we were visiting austin from minneapolis, and it did not disappoint!
This record store is pretty big compared to the other record stores in Austin and offers a huge selection of new vinyl. When I go, I have to be careful not to get too tempted and buy up a whole bunch of records. They dont have the best selection for new/used jazz, but if youre looking for Pop, Indie, Rock, or Metal, they have a wide range of stuff. Youll most likely find what youre looking for.I think some of records can be a bit overpriced, so check out Discogs or some of the other stores around Austin if youre looking for something in particular.
Recently moved near Manchaca and Ben White down the street from Whataburger. Best place to get top quality music, and they will order whatever your taste is, providing its able to be picked by their distribution ... Also hidden treasures, a way to repair Record players & equip. Just go & see the friendly folks & enjoy new space. Dvds, rare records & more
Bar none the best record store in Austin. The selection is as weird as you’d expect an Austin record store to be, the staff is always helpful and the prices are the best in town. If you’re a wax collector and you haven’t been to End of an Ear, you are doing your life a disservice.
One of the owners just sold me an upgraded stylus for my stanton head, and it sounds noticeably better. The guys obviously an enthusiast. As the other reviewers say, the selection is small, but excellent - definitely a good place for a gift for any music lover. Including a turntable, should they need one. Check the twitter feed for specials and shows.
It was like visiting my childhood. My Dad used to play records when I was a kid, like The Beach Boys, Neil Diamond, Wings, The Bee Gees. They have them all. It took me back just flippingthrough thrm. I loved it. I purchased The Steve Miller Band, Boston, Eagles, Supertramp and Linda Rondstat with the song Blue Bayou because I used to play that on my Holly Hobby record player when I was seven. Love it!!! The guys were great help in finding albums for me. Love my vinyl!! Ill definitely be going back.
This is a very cozy place for music lovers. Its clear that vinyl dominates the store, but they also carry cassettes, CDs, VHS, and BluRay/DVDs. Their selection of films were obscure. You wont be finding 3 copies of the movie Hitch here. Alot of horror, classics, and Criterion Collection which I really dug. They carried alot of vinyl rarities, had deals of Buy 10 for $5, and prices a little cheaper than Waterloo. Great place!
This place is a must stop for anyone who loves music. They have it all. I could spend a whole lot of time and money in a record store like this. The people that work there were very knowledgeable and happy to help with anything. I will be returning in the near future.
Decently varied selection that leans slightly towards new releases/reissues but with enough of a used collection to keep you busy for an hour. I found some surprises and enough of what I was looking for to make a few moderately tough decisions.Prices are fair but lean towards the high side of fair.
End of an Ear is my favorite place to buy music in town... If I cant find what Im looking for, theyll help me special order it. I often go in unsure of what I really want, or if I want something at all, and will inevitably find something that I cant live without. The staff is very helpful and very knowledgeable. Its a place that deserves so much more attention that it receives, but my selfish side prefers that it doesnt so I can keep it all to myself.
Dude, this place rules. At other music shops, I have a tendency to be in fear of judgement on what Im holding in my hand. This staff could give two poops about youve got in hand.I truly believe they believe in the power of le musique -- If a customer is super excited about that sir-mix-a lot find or a collectible punk record, all they care about is that smile.Above a pretty great selection and a cozy place, the prices are super reasonable.Cheers to music, in-store performances, cool staff, and local business.Arrivaderch
My favorite record store in the world so far, better than kims video in greenwich village and vinyl fever back in my hometown of tallahassee. theres a fantastic selection with a lot of weird import items: its the only place ive seen selling look blue go purple and international harvester albums here in the states. i came away with a lot of great used albums in a 10 cds for $5 sale, too.
Waterloo, half price books, antones, all these combined could never touch how amazing and personal this record store makes you feel. It is like my church for music as dragons lair is my therapy for comics. Waterloo is cool if you are hip and cool but if you really love music and want to feel closer to the music that you love then End of an Ear is King!!!

2022-03-08End of an Ear is the best and my favorite record shop in the Austin area. I love walking in here to find rare gems just sitting on front shelves. They have the best vinyl inventory. Youll find anything from Leon Bridges to Type O Negative. I always go in for one record and walk out with more. The staff is super friendly and very responsive over email/social media. Dan should be proud of his team. Theyre happy to order something when possible. From my experience, they also offer more $ for your trade-ins. Swing by and check them out!

2021-08-09This place gave me such nostalgic vibes. It was my first time visiting, and I couldve spent hours looking around at all of the options. My favorite was seeing the tape selections. I wish I had more room in my luggage to fly it back with me, but for now, I will be grateful I got to experience it.

2022-04-23What a cool store. Rarely do I see a dedicated prog/psych section especially one as expansive as theirs. Employees were nice and the overall experience was very pleasant. Will be back through on my next visit to Austin

2021-05-05Really a great store. Miss them not being on S 1st, but its worth it to visit them. I always find something (usually multiple somethings) here on vinyl, and usually a buck cheaper than say Waterloo. Keep up the good work yall.
