Half Price Books in other cities:
This is one of the smallest ones Ive been at. Did t have a food selection of anything I was looking for. Most staff wouldnt even help or ask If they could help. When asked where a book would be they just pointed to where signs were. The ONLY person I can give a food review for was the older woman who was the cashier. She was very kind.
Love, Half Price books. Its a wonderful place to find everything your reading hearts desire. Its a great place to take your children, to pick up gifts, to look for bargains, or even to find a rare signed book. They also have movies: blue ray, DVD, tapes. Also: 8 tracks, LPs, Tapes and CDs. And to top it off, Games: PC, board games, table tops, consoles games, card games. The staff is helpful, friendly and attentive. I urge anyone to drop by for a spell.
Love Half Price books! Quick, easy, and fast return on selling. Its easy to get lost in here :) Staff are not the friendliest sometimes though.Would it be possible to have some sort of online store catalogue? It would be helpful to use for current inventory when looking for something specific.
Very discouraged to see a video circulating online of your dumpster. Tons and tons of books thrown away. There should be a much more sustainable option for these titles. With all of the little free libraries and countless nonprofits in Austin these could have gone to a better home. Such a shame.
I am a book worm at heart & so are my kids! We love going to half price book store before a holiday to buy a couple of new books to add to our collection. This store is always clean, organized, and the staff is helpful and kind. Just wish there was a store closer to me.
Really efficient book buy back process these days. I wasnt very happy when I tried to walk in to sell my books and found out I had to make an appointment, but now that the appointment day has come, everything went really smoothly and quickly. Although they cannot pay as much for books as they were able to in the past, it was still a pleasant process with a desirable outcome. Thanks to the great and caring staff at Half Price Books for hanging in there even in this crazy time were living in!
I dont live near this store but was in the area and decided to stop in. They have a good selection of books. The store is well lit and the aisles are roomy. The staff is helpful. My only complaint is that they didnt tell me about Half Price Books upcoming sale in November nor give me any coupons. Regardless, the next time I am in the area, I will stop in to shop.
A proper weighted average of the store as a whole would likely require a renaming to Nine-Tenths Price Books, although I doubt the branding department would accept such a change. Provided that one can navigate themselves towards the clearance aisle, sift through at least three hundred distinct books on revitalizing an evangelical church in the Midwest, and ignore the concerning implications of their hypercapitalist business model, Half Price Books can have some great gems, for truly low prices.
Huge selection of great stuff. Love coming here for board games and puzzles in addition to the sprawling collection of books (both fiction and nonfiction) and graphic novels. I havent taken the time to look at their movies or CDs but there is a decent size section for both. They also have a video game section with mostly previous generation games, great place to pick up last years version of Madden or other sports games for cheap if youre into that.
Not sure where the owner of this location sways on their political views but its quite obvious with the presentation and selection..given where it is located. Very biased on what is promoted since you walk in and bless your heart if you have common sense about Covid BS/masks while potentially more conservative perspectives..they will be challenged. Every owner I would think, would present their business better than this, then again being one myself, what do I know?
I like the idea of places like this. Half Price Books is a cool store with an ever changing selection of books and random cool stuff. The staff is always, in my experience, friendly and helpful. They take books and give you cash for them. I keep seeing people say that they rip you off or that they think theyve been low balled. To that I say, yeah, they do low ball a bit but if you think your books are worth more, sell them online if you can. I personally needed the space. Traded some graphic novels and a few books for a couple bucks. Went and had a burger. They will help you locate a book wherever it is in the world. My kid wanted a book. She couldnt find it. The girl at the counter was helpful, found it, and called the store where it was so we could pick it up. They will assist you in getting what you want.Great selection of comics and books of all types. Great place to find manuals and instructionals. Just a really cool place overall.
I go there at least once a month love this place I do! Find many great things there you can!! I go there mainly for the comics & graphic novels. If you have time to dig & search you can find some good deals 👍 If you like paperbacks theres a dollar bargain rack by the buyback Center where you can find some good books. The store is always clean & the staff is cool , friendly & helpful. If you cant find what youre looking for they will go out of their way to help you. They can order it from one of their other stores and have it brought to the store for you. Great place👍👍🖖
For awhile at the start of the pandemic you had to make an appointment to sell books, etc. Now the only restriction is how many bags of books they are willing to review and during a specific timeframe. Currently from noon to 5:00 oclock. Staff is very friendly, accommodating, and professional. They are also very quick.
I enjoy this Half Price Book, the staff is friendly and very helpful. They make it very easy if you need to sell books as well. I would recommend this book store to find what you may be looking for. They will also call other locations if they dont have the book you want and they will have it sent to the store for you.
You can purchase an variety of books at an nominal price and also can sell them your books as well.Lot of titles and categories are available with neatly arranged. Chose an couple of books for an tea time read and even though books were resold, they maintain in good shape and looks like new one. A shop to look over if you looking to read/contribute others as well.I believe they dont have audio books as i havent seen them in store.
Good variety. Its filled with stationary, music, video, gifts, antique and current books - it makes me want to buy a bookcase! The children section is great. Busy, but well-staffed with helpful, friendly people. Good, because youll need their help for items high up. One less star as I would avoid the bathrooms if possible.
Ive been coming to this store for years, and will continue to for many years to come. They have hundreds of books across every genre, CDs, videogames, movies, vinyl, and boardgames. The staff are always super friendly and really nice, always happy to help. Half price is usually my go to place for my media needs.
I love Half Price Books. Clerks are always friendly and helpful. I always come out with at least one new book, usually history or a new mystery/thriller--or both! I love browsing & meeting interesting people on occasion. (Hint: authors love books!) Ive found some great music CDs in their music section, too. This location is all too close to me, & Im a frequent visitor.
Just left this store because I didnt feel welcome your employees were rude and condescending especially Mike. Itll be a long time before I go back. The employees in the store over the past 30 years always been extremely kind and helpful however Ive noticed since the pandemic started their extremely rude condescending and Sassy they need to drop their attitude if they want to keep their customers.
I go here to kill time, because I can lose myself for hours in their clearance section alone. The. Best. I buy all my foreign language stuff, old games, movies, journals here in addition to all the books! Theres always something great if you are shopping for a gift, their display groups are always interesting, and I find stuff here that I thought Id never be able to find anywhere. Did I mention its the best? You definitely dont get much when you sell your books here, but you should be donating them anyway instead if you can!
This location has a decent enough selection of books, movies, and music. Its a fun place to browse, but they can be a bit on the slow side if youre selling your books. Not terribly impressed by their offers when I want to sell (sometimes Ill decline their offer and take my books to the North Lamar or Southpark Meadows locations... 75% of the time I get better offers elsewhere). Theyll hold books for you for a day or two so you can check whether or not your potential purchase already sits on your shelves at home, which is nice.
So it looks like HPB has gone the way of goodwill. Over charging on used items just so they can make a few more bucks. Went to the one on south Lamar Sunday and went looking through the CDs. Found a lot of CDs I would have loved to buy.... except for the fact they were asking $20 and up for them. For used CDs. Are you kidding me? I guess theyre just keeping the half price part for the books. Made me feel better when I didnt get a book from there because I found it for a quarter of the price on ebay. Looks like Im just going to have to start buying my CDs on ebay from now on. Sorry HPB but thats what happens when you get greedy.
Great selection of books, dvds, and more. They sell some new stuff, but most is used. Dont go expecting to buy something specific because most of their stock is donated. Still, if youre a flexible reader/shopper, youll definitely find something to be happy with at a reasonable price. I could spend hours just browsing.
I could get lost in any Half Price Books for hours, but this particular location has great selection! If you are looking for a decent copy of classic literature, there is NO need to go anywhere else but here. I have found rare copies of literary gems, I have bought the latest bestsellers, I have bought journals, calendars, cookbooks, and records here for as long as I can remember! Its a great place to brainstorm gifts for friends, and they have a great selection of childrens books, DVDs, and vinyl records. On a less thrilling note, I do wish that selling books/DVDs here were a little more profitable. I have taken in brand new, high quality books and usually get a price quote equivalent to less than a dollar per book. You will get more bang for your buck selling on Amazon.
Went looking for vinyl records on Valentines day. Couldnt even park at the record store and remembered this place. I found so many reasonably priced albums, all genres, choosing from all the awesome recordings was truly difficult. I purchased new, they also have a great previously loved section. I lose track of time wandering around looking at everything from games to aisles & ailes of books on every imaginable subject. The staff is always super helpful as well. Very worth the trip.
A lot of used books people didnt want but they sell some new stuff for children, children at heart and nerd culture items. You may find a gem somewhere but if you have a few good books in any subject you probably wont find another good book here. If you are hanging out with friends it a cool hang to pass time.
One of the larger Half Price Books with a fantastic selection of Sci-Fi used and new books and about any other genre you would want. Great knowledgable staff here whom have always been helpful and friendly to me. Love my Kindle but there is just something about holding onto a real book.
Used to find old paperback mysteries from many different authors. shelves now full of multiple copies of popular books by the same authors. looks like all the good old, under-the-radar stuff is gone. but, if thats what you want, prices are still good and they have a huge selection.
Friendly, helpful, staff that always seem to enjoy being there. The prices are phenomenal. If you want to own your own books at the lowest prices possible, this is the best place in town, with the greatest selection to choose from. If my review helps, please let me know. Also, there are multiple locations, as well as, an online site.
The staff is friendly, the store is clean, and the layout is large. I called to have a book held for me and when it was misplaced they had 3 employees looking for it. They were also very accommodating. They called other Half Price Stores in the area to see if they had a book in stock because the system said there was only one and they didn’t want me to drive over there if that one had already been sold. Great service!
Im from Tucson AZ and this store reminds me so much of our local Bookmans be and used bookstore. I found a game I used to play with my mom in the early 90s and the atmosphere and selection of old and new is remarkable. This will be a regular go-to for my family as new Austin residents. its also great place to find a selection of gift for almost anybody whether its a board game or CD a new book or old book or journal calendar or quirky stationery.... They do not disappoint I highly recommend this place for anyone!
Back before the plague this was on my way to work and I would often frequent it on the way home. Since Covid has hit I have not been able to go as much but when I do I always feel welcomed. Theyve taken the precautions necessary to ensure customers feel safe to peruse the books.
I love Half Priced Books on South Lamar. I am always pleasantly surprised by the books I find there. The staff is more than helpful and will try to locate the book for you at another local store or from online if they dont have the copy in stock. I always feel comfortable to pop a squat and stay as long as I need to while browsing which often means I choose many more titles than intended for at a steal. Half Priced Books is always my go to spot when I am looking for new authors, inspiration, or a rabbit hole of random knowledge.
I love this place dearly. The smell of books evokes a sense of calm. Ive been visiting this location for years and the staff is always helpful and pleasant.Location is too small and cant hold a copy of every book ever for me to purchase at 1/2 price, boo. This location seems to have one of the bigger manga sections.
Good location, plenty of parking, lots of food choices around it. This half priced books has been doing a lot of coupon deals lately, so its worth checking out. They have a great selection of the big categories like fiction, lps, sci-fi, etc., but their more niche sections are pretty small.
Used to be my favorite book store. They have changed their business model. Used to go in there and find a dozen books at a time. Now they just focus on what they think will have best profit margin. So many great sections have been vastly reduced. Hard to find the books that I’m looking for here. Much easier to look online.
Good selection of books but they arent all a bargain. Sometimes you get lucky but you can end up spending a lot of money here despite the name. Also not worth selling your books here unless youd be giving them away otherwise, because you wont get much for them. Overall large selection of books though. I will visit again and again Im sure.
Half Price Books is a very eclectic used book store in South Austin. They have everything from very rare collectible books to movies, video games, and music (CD, vinyl). I usually find something every time I go in their as my family are all big readers and they are looking for something to read. The things that I dont like are that they really dont have a good inventory system. Maybe thats on purpose, but I really dont like hunting around if I want something specific. This store also really needs to be remodeled. It just looks old and dirty. Their newer stores seem to have better lighting and they are easier to get around in. This store is recommended though as there is always something here and they have good prices especially when they have their big sales a couple of times per year.
Im a fan of HPB in general and this location is no exception. I have traded books in here a few times but never games. Well, I came upon a box of old SNES, Wii and PS1 games thinking they were junk. I took it all to this location just to see what I could get and low and behold I got WAY more than I imagined I would. Aside from my return, the wait time for how much stuff they had to look through on top of how many people were in the store was not actually too long (~20 minutes tops). I like this location for how close it is to where I live. On top of the location, everyone in the store is nice and very helpful. Parking can sometimes be crowded but Im not going to blame half-priced books as its a shopping center with multiple stores and I can only assume HPB doesnt decide how many parking spaces to have.
Great selection and friendly staff. I needed an actual print dictionary. You would not believe how hard it is to find one last minute. This was a one off rate situation where I had to have a hard copy last minute. I checked three other businesses before I thought of half price books. They had it in stock.
The employees here have integrity. They called me back to their store after discovering they low-balled me on some electronics I sold to them. Very happy to do business with such honest people. Also found a book Ive been wanting for very cheap. Overall great experience!
The store at first can be a bit daunting. A great selection on an extensive variety of topics. The difference here is the staff. Everyone thats helped me here has been incredibly knowledgeable and often knows exactly where a book can be found based on author or title. Definitely would recommend.
Service always manages to suck at every half priced books I go to, always has since way back in the good old days where the drag was the only location. With that said, you cannot beat the prices. They have an excellent book selection and the best part is that they cater to my geeky side filling it with comic book and record love on the cheap.
Visited the South Austin HPB for the first time and was happy to find a location at this end of town. The store is clean and well organized, and the staff seemed really helpful, friendly and upbeat. The book selection was good, with a variety of books that were near-new and in great shape.
Good stuff- good prices, but sometimes I wish for a better selection of new books. Its still one of my favorite stores for buying a gift. South Lamar location is in a great spot- near baker street bar and torcheys tacos as well as the whole central market shopping mall.
Took some really good hardcover books(my opinion) in to sell. While waiting 45 minutes I shopped around and bought a book at a fantastic price. After that they called my name to make me an offer on the 27 books I was selling. $8.00 take it or leave it. I left it. So my experience is, Half Price Books, great place to buy, but TERRIBLE place to sell your books to.
I always enjoy shopping this location. Great selection and friendly staff. Lots of parking in front, on the side and in back. You also can enter or exit from South Lamar or Manchaca on the back side. Be sure to sign up for their email list for extra coupons throughout the year. Just show them your coupon on your screen and they will take care of the rest. No printing necessary. I have been visiting HPB stores here in Austin for over 40 years with no plans to stop. Dont forget to check out their clearance areas for some really awesome deals!
Half Price Books is a,wonderful business model. The model is enviromentally responsible and friendly by keeping those books and materials out of our landfills, garages, storage stalls and attics. They also ptovide a means of making books and the knowledge and entertainment contained within them affordable to everyone. Loce this store.
Huge selection of books, records, and DVDs. I use to only read ebooks but now the prices of ebooks have become so inflated that Ive switched back to paper back. I am able to get 3-4 books at half price books for what I would pay for a new eBook. The store is very organized and the people are great.
Took four boxes of books, magazines and DVDs...only got $12 for all..lowest sale ever...should have donated to a charity or hospital..HPB has a large and varied inventory of books,CDs,DVDs etc..bought 1 book, 3 CDs worth $18+ for $6.59 so was a positive experience..wish my sale would have been higher though...
Ive been visiting this location of the excellent Half Price Books chain since I was just a kid, and every time I find something I cant leave without. They have a large selection of books, DVDs, CDs, and even a nice assortment of gift ideas for around the holidays. If you want original sources for college courses, theres all kinds of original texts on the sciences, philosophy, mathematics, history, you name it. You absolutely cannot beat the value, and the staff are awesome!
Half Priced Books is my hero at times. The best time to go is during the day on a weekday, when a lot of the city is working or in school. Theres a few locations, and its worth going to at least two if you have the time... If you cant find what youre looking for at one, they can call another location and have them hold the item if its there.Even if youre not looking for a specific title, they all have their own feel and its worth checking that out.
I didnt want to drive off before writing this review because I didnt want to forget. I have been coming to HPB for a while and cant believe I have not written a review on them until now. The team at the South Lamar location is absolutely outstanding! When I called to see if they had a book I was looking for the person I spoke with over the phone politely asked me to hold. While she checked to see if it they had it, she sounded genuinely excited for me that there was one copy. Also, it was an excellent condition. She told me she would hold it for me for three days. Naturally, when I went to purchase the book I wanted to see what other books I might like. I asked a team member by the name of Agusta for some assistance. She was so kind & patient with me as she assisted me to select the right books for my needs. Shes the only person whos name I asked for. However, every person that I encountered spoke to each other with respect and sound like they genuinely enjoy working with each other. As I made my final selections, the team worked diligently behind the sell back your books counter. I couldnt help but notice, some people were simply in a rush while others were short with them. I wish more people would slow down and notice people like the staff here. Let them know what a fantastic job they are doing! They are truly exemplary! No matter what your profession is, look here for tips on how to speak to your team and clientele.Never take for granted the kindness of others.
I found a Jimmie Walker LP here. Who knew the Dy-no-mite kid ever released an album?Also... In 2001 when I first moved here, there was an all-80s station that I listened to all the time. They played George Harrisons Got My Mind Set On You from his 1987 Cloud Nine album one day, and I realized I hadnt heard the song in probably ten years or so. Then I wondered if I owned a copy of the song. I looked through all my records but couldnt find it. Upon searching for the album online, I came to find that it was out of print. So, I went on a quest to find it. The very last place I went to was this Half Price Books and, lo and behold, they had an UNOPENED copy of the Cloud Nine album, and at a decent price! They also had an opened copy. I bought both, and still havent opened the sealed copy. And every time I went to a Half Price and found a copy of the album, I bought it. I dont even know how many cassette and LP copies I have at this point. I became a Harrison hoarder. The album was re-released after his death and is easily found on CD now, but who cares?
For two commutes each day I struggle through Austins wall to wall traffic and unbelievably rude, inept and dangerous drivers - hoping to average a whopping 10 miles per hour...on the freeways. I survive the frustration through a steady diet of books-on-tape from Half Price Books. When Im standing still on I-35 I can reframe my thoughts to I get to hear another chapter instead of &$+@/!!Its a great place for adorable DVDs, music, books and the staff are always friendly
A shout-out to Chris and the team at Half Price Books for their continuing help on donations for Pleasant Hill Elementary. We are putting these books to important work providing needed reading opportunities for 600+ students. Many of these children have few or no books at home. Encouraging literacy with books is a very important benefit. Thank You! Friends of Pleasant Hill Elementary
I love going to Half-Price Books more than the library. My favorite store is the one on the corner of Lamar Blvd & Koenig Lane. If you go to the back corner of the store to the Clearance section you can find all kinds of Best Sellers or Out of Print books for only $1 !

2022-05-10My son is 9 years old and is going to be 10 in August. My Aunt thought that it was the perfect time to introduce him to the world of Harry Potter. I am told that Harry Potter is also a August baby and he was age 10 in the first book, which is what we set out to find and ended up at Half Price Books. I had never been there before so i had no expectations...When i opened the door to enter, the very first thing I noticed was the smell....Aahhh... The smell BOOKS, both new and old. There is nothing better than the smell of an old book... ( Those book lovers out there understand , Im sure)We found what we wanted very easily. The place is very well organized in a way that makes sense. The staff was very kind and overall it was a very enjoyable experience.

2022-05-10I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Half Price Books! They have BOOKS! LOTS of them! This is where the knowledge is! I am glad that most people today dont like to read books, or so it seems. That means MORE for people who DO READ BOOKS! The staff are SUPER FRIENDLY! This is a GREAT company that takes care of its employees and provides a great service to the community. THANK YOU HALF PRICE BOOKS I LOVE YOU!

2022-08-21Nice location. Had a good selection of books and games. Found a wrapped custom produced game from Orange County, Texas. The selection of audio books, especially nonfiction, was small. However, this is more than made up for by the great selection elsewhere. Definitely worth going to even if you are a distance away.

2022-07-19Love this book shop. Its getting to be more frequent that the public library only has the ebook edition of something we want to read and Amazon might carry the book but for a stupid amount of money. Half-price will usually have it at one of their locations for very cheap! So grateful to have them as an option!

2022-08-02They will not give you what a true antique copy of Huckleberry Finn from 1967 with illustration and no damage unless you take a big sacrifice and let them purchase that rareity for half price!

2022-08-17Dont sell your books here because you wont get anything for them, but. Always a good selection and plenty of great prices.

2020-01-03Perfect store for books, records, basically what you would like expect from a bookstore, plus many more. Nicest place to hang out on a lazy Sunday. Prices are really bargain and there are loads for collectioners too.
