The museum was a great place to spend some time with my girlfriend. There were all sorts of incredible artifacts, and interesting history. There was also a great giftshop with any sort of souvenir you could want. It wasnt crowded at all, we got to spend as much time as we wanted in the different exhibits. The Kwahadi dancing group was practicing and even let us join in and learn a part of their routine!
AN UNKNOWN TREAT IN AMARILLO! The Kwahadi Indian Museum might be a rather small building but it is packed with Indian art, artifacts, clothing, photos, and a nice little gift shop too.It is inexpensive to go there, but the hours are not great, so be sure to check that before going. If you are fortunate enough to be there in February, June, or July, you might get the opportunity to catch an amazing performance of authentic Native American Indian dances. These dances were passed down from four different tribes in this region, and are performed by local Boy and Girl Scouts. Cost is less than $10/adult/show.Dont pass this this one up!
Was rather disappointed in the content of the museum. It was basically all art. I came expecting to learn about the Kwahadi Indians but went away with no history lesson. The museum is well built with interesting architecture and the staff were nice. That was about it .
Fabulous museum with huge collection of Native American artifacts, artwork, and must impressive is that it is the home of a Boy Scout Venture Crew that specializes in Native American dances . They travel all over the US educating us on such culture. Watched this coed youth group practicing there and have seen them perform. They are great.
A small yet great museum of Native American Indian artifacts for a very reasonable price. It includes a packed gift shop filled with Indian made jewelry, mementos, and books. If you are lucky enough to visit when the winter or summer dance ceremonies are being performed, you are in for a Treat! Authentic Native American Indian Dances of four tribes are performed by boy and girl scouts in a fast paced, colorful tribute to the original inhabitants of the Panhandle.I have taken a group of foreign exchange students there for the past 10 years and never get tired of watching the dances.
Please please do NOT stay here overnight with a scouting troop! It maybe free but you get what you pay for!On June 21st, 2016 between midnight and 5am someone broke into our troop truck and stole a bunch of stuff including a very expensive Nikon D700 Camera body, 2 lenses, memory cards, nikon binoculars and my favorite walking stick with a Garner State Park emblem on it. They also took many of the girls clothing, shoes and bags a long with personal items. These are all NOT covered by GS insurance or auto insurance..These girls are only 10-11 years old. This place has NO security and NO camera or night lighting and it is very conveniently located right off the highway next to a big truck stop. There are too many places for a thief or 2 to hide and wait and then steal with NO one even noticing. Please please do not stay there. It is NOT safe!!! No one from the boy scout council or anything has offered to help refund or replace items.. NO one cares!!
We went to Amarillo with this as one of the top on to do list. We arrived in town and find it has very limited hours. Worse we went at 300pm today and doors locked. The parking lot is very run down and it makes the place feel abandoned. Its very univiting from the outside. Real shame we missed out on what seems to be a good museum.
Love this place although the gift shop runs quite expensive especially given that any turquoise jewellery I was told comes from trawling pawn shops which is sad, local natives Handmake these pieces and then pawn them only for one of the staff members of the heritage museum gets the items and sells on for probably 3 times what the persom who made it got. The place is run by white people as far as Ive seen and the dance class i watched too. The Museum artifacts are awesome and some off the giftshop items too.... thats about all. Id love too see some or any native americans working there - kinda has a what mexicans think of taco Bell vibe.
One of the best places to go when youre in north Texas. Im part of a Boy Scout troop/Venture crew that stays at the kwahadi kiva when we come to north Texas and I have to say its incredible! We all love the dancing, artwork, and the exhibits! When you come in you feel welcome right away.
From the research I have done on this group, it looks like a bunch of pretendians and its obvious you do not have federal recognition, the dancers are nothing more than white people appropriating Native culture, if you were federally recognised, you would use actual eagle feathers on your trinkets, rather than chicken feather left overs from some hick farm.

2022-06-01As a heritage center this place is overflowing with history, artifacts, displays and a passionate and knowledgeable staff. During a recent trip on the Memorial Day weekend the wife and I made a stop to see what we could learn and experience. Inside is plenty of artwork that can be purchased, tours, and a more hands on scouting exhibit. When you enter you are greeted by a dance hall which has seating and plenty of plains art, totems, and other regalia. From there, as you move through the exhibits, and display cases, there is plenty of information on things that we may recognize from movies or television: head dresses, weapons, masks and other sorts but help you realize what tribes they represent, and their importance. In fact during my visits there were some First Nation folks there to gather more about their history. If you have visited History of the plains museum in Rapid City, you will love this place too.

2022-03-15If I could give more stars I would. The Kwahadi (pronounced Kwadi)are a subtribe of the Cherokee. The museum is really dedicated to ALL Western /Plains and even the Mexican tribes. FANTASTIC art and artifacts are available to see. The people are very knowledgeable and friendly and the private collection of art and books from Mr. Thomas Mails was breathtaking to see the original art used in his books. This is a MUST SEE when you are in the area. Hours are limited to 1pm-4:30pm Sat and Sunday. You will need several hours to really see all the items in this dedicated muse

2021-07-11My family and I opted to go and check out the Kwahadi dance and dinner. And we enjoyed the show. Dinner was good was good as well. The museum is open until everything starts. The show was 2 hours and 25 minutes long with a intermission of about 12 minutes ( you can purchase a drink and snack during this time.) If you seen Texas you have to see this too. Must reserve seats and meal.

2021-05-16Very nice facility. We went to a surprise birthday party here and enjoyed looking at all the artwork and taking in the atmosphere. It looks like there are big plans for an expansion in the future Will try to come back and watch a dance ceremony soon.

2021-07-26Last day of season. Fantastic experience. Staff was extremely knowledgeable and gave us a tour of the facility even though they were busy cleaning up for the year. Next years visit is highly recommended.

2020-12-28We stopped by today and the museum was actually closed for Christmas week. However, somone was there and they came to the door when I rang the bell. He opened just for my family. I wish I knew his name. He was very knowledgeable and told us many interesting facts. My 11 year old, Michael, would talk to him about he knew and then the gentleman would dive into that history a little more they went back and forth with information for probably 20-30 min. He allowed us to take our time and even didnt seem to mind my rambunctious 4 year old. The parking lot needs a little love, but from what I could gather all the money they get goes straight to paying the bills(everyone there is a volunteer) and so they might not have the income to clean it up. We LOVED our experience and will be telling others anout it. Check it out if you are in town on a weekend during the school year.
