I checked out the gift shop and was going to tour the museum but I couldn’t seem to get the attention of either staff members glued to their phones. It’s not great for business when staff don’t acknowledge the existence of customers. I feel like anyone could have walked through the door and robbed the entire place and the staff wouldn’t have looked up from their phones once. I appreciate the museums recognition of that style of art.
A small but interesting and informative gallery of Mexican artwork. A lot of really cool pieces in the gallery, worth the cost of entry in my opinion. The gift shop is free to enter and also has a lot of cool things at a reasonable price, the sugar skulls were my favorite I wish I bought more.
A history that gets overlooked a lot. It was an amazing experience to dive into the history of the Mexican people and their struggles that define an entire group of ppl. I loved learning a small piece of the history and found a new profound view of just how much had been taken by the northern world.

We went for my sons culture project in high school Spanish class. I thought it was going to be a museum. I guess it is, but the display was on day of the dead, dia de muertos. There were lots of example dead person altars, build in remembrance of a lost loved one. Lots of culture for sure. A bit freaky for us, topped off with some parade float stuff form keep austin weird parades. However, we got the story we needed for my sons project and report. Unfortunately, one exhibit showed the establishments true colors. It was an exhibit about innocent and kind people being treated unfairly when they enter the american border illegally. There as a figure of a boy in what looked a nacho libre outfit, representing the plight of all children against white people and walls. Weird and liberal. Did not appreciate the politics. But hey, it was free. Probably wont go back.
Really neat place. I didnt get to go through the museum but could see some of it and it looked really neat. I bought some items in the gift shop. They were pretty expensive but they had a lot of cool items. I ended up buying several items. Lots of Frida items who is one of my favorite artists. Highly recommend it. I plan on going back and take the museum tour.
Small, but full of charm and beautiful colorful authentic Mexican art. Enjoyed the guided tour and the stories, especially the ones about La Llorona and La Malinche. Went on a Sunday, no fee. Exotic items and interesting flavored chocolate at the gift shop. Very warm and attentive staff.
Amazing! Very educational and beautiful. A great variety of different types of art in a small package. Definitely recommend. Staff were super accommodating, they have free lockers to keep small bags in. Went on a Monday afternoon so it was quiet, but definitely a must in Austin.
I was visiting from NY, so had no idea of what to expect. Mexic-Arte is a small pocket museum, where you can walk thru the gallery in a handful of minutes. But I took more time to read the placards and really look at the photos and artwork. I came away with more understanding and depth of culture. I think it was time well spent. If I lived nearby, I like to come by on a regular basis, as I am sure that the exhibits chnage from time to time.
Really interesting museum that talks about the first people and their struggles with the colonization from Europeans, as well as how theyve evolved into the culture they are today. The artwork and exhibits were beautiful and the gift shop had some really interesting knick knacks as well.
On my first trip to Austin, the first thing I wanted to do was go to the Mexci-Arte museum. Coming from NC, I’m limited on museums that celebrate being latinx/chicanx and loved walking through here. Plus, it’s free on Sunday, so save the money to spend in their gift shop!
Beautiful art museum that features Latino Artists. Often times in art museums, modern art and local artist aren’t offered a space, especially not artists of color but they Mexic-Arte museum establishes an incredibly reflective and open space to appreciate the narratives of latinidad.
Super small and not a lot of art to call a museum in my opinion. 7.00 just to walk a few feet. The gift shop was nice and tons of cool items. The staff was incredibly RUDE. The little girl at the gift shop register was miserable and unwelcoming. Not to just to our group, but others I witnessed. I noticed theres been other reviews about a girl in the gift shop being rude. Her daddy must own it, cant get fired and miserable cause of it. Just my guess, why else would they keep such bitterness on staff. I was embarrassed she was a representation of the Mexican culture at such a place that supposed to celebrate and educate on my roots. Shame.
This museum exceeded my expectations. You’ll probably get lost in their gift shop, so be prepared to spend some time/money in here.Sometimes they have free admissions, so I would recommend to ask. This museum is full of culture, and history. You leave the place learning something new.
This museum has a wonderful rotation of exhibits! The admission price is only $5 for adults and $4 for students. They sell lovely items in the gift shop that help support the museum. I only wish that their signs were a bit more descriptive of the art on display, especially for the video media.
This small museum is well worth a visit. At certain times of the year, elaborate Mexican shrines to the dead are on display, made by family members, and every one is different, as it will feature objects that had meaning to the departed. Some will be very personal and poignant, and some funny. All are colorful and interesting.I was pleased that you are allowed to take photographs. Ive visited twice, different years, and the displays were entirely different. There is also a section with items for sale at very reasonable prices. A good place to find a momento to take home for yourself, or for a friend or family member. The staff are friendly, and the experience is delightful. It is great for what it is, but it is a small place, which is the only reason I didnt rate it five stars.
This was a really cool Mexican art shop. Lots of different types of art by different artists. The store itself is pretty small, but they have some unique and funny gifts as well. You notice the art as you walk by and window shop, but if you go inside theres so much more to see. The staff was nice and helpful.
Really cool place! As a Mexican American woman, its absolutely fascinating to see artwork about your people. The museum was small, with a cute shop selling Mexican art and knick knacks. Admission is FREE on Sundays, and they do student discounts. Only 4 stars because when my boyfriend and I went, they only had one exhibit open. Not their fault, still was a great experience!
I enjoyed the time here. The exhibits were very interesting and the back area had so much local artist for sale. We even got to meet the gentleman who created the main exhibit so that was nice. Well worth paying for but we got lucky and showed up on a Sunday where its free.
They were in between exhibits when I was in town, so there wasnt too much to look at. But I still give this place a 5-star review. The gift shop is super nice (I spent at least 20 minutes just looking at all the neat stuff and picking up some souvenirs) and the woman working the gift shop was very polite. My partner has a business trip to Austin in November and I hope I can catch an exhibit next time!
This museum caught my eye walking by, and I was blown away by the pieces inside. I loved how local art was displayed and highlighted. The themes were moving and spoke to me. As a native Texan and Latina, this experience was humbling and inspiring. Whatever walk of life you come from, please stop by and see what meaning you glean from this special gallery. Whether youre looking for beauty, emotion, or something else, youll walk away with something important.
Lots of interesting and beautiful Mexican art. Also great for souvenirs however had to give it one star because we just felt very unwelcomed from the second we walked in the door. We said hello to the young lady sitting at the counter. Her acknowledgement was to look up and give us a nasty look. We were the only people in the store for about 10 minutes and she never spoke a word or looked up or smiled. We left without buying anything. It was really uncomfortable
I would say this is more of a small collection of items than a museum. The largest portion of the exhibit was a border wall themed area where you can write a message on a bandana and tie it to the wall. The other was an area dedicated to the recent tragedy at the mall in Texas. Personally would have liked to have seen more about artists and culture and less political commentary. Frida was all over the gift shop. Nowhere in the museum proper.
I would love to give this gallery a higher rating but they have some work to do on notifying the public on their schedule re: exhibit changing. My husband and I had been looking forward to touring their gallery (and hopefully picking up a piece). Unfortunately, when we arrived we were instructed that they would be changing their exhibits later that day so they had closed off the gallery. We still checked out their gift shop - which has some wonderful items btw - their internet was down so we were fortunate we had just enough cash to pick up a few small items. We finally asked if the pieces in display now or the new exhibit would be shown online for this interested in purchasing...no dice. I hope this gallery gets some help to modernize their establishment significantly.
Very very small. I went on a free day, and Im glad I didnt pay for it because I got through everything in under 30 minutes. Still a nice place to stop, and had some cool pieces, but not worth much of an entrance fee in my opinion. They do put on one of the most amazing festivals though.
Great place, must visit, Great gift shop.Visited to see #Fridas exhibition and it was a really nice place. Small place, and for the love of humanity fix those floors lol (not a big deal, more like laughable). Please donate to the museum, is something that we should really feel proud of, they do an excellent job!
This is a fantastic, if small, collection of Mexican and Chicano/a art. I was lucky to be here right after the Dia do los Muertos parade in Austin and they had several of the floats on display, as well as several ofertas. I particularly enjoyed the explanation of the meaning of each of the parts of the ofertas. I was able to learn a lot which has increased my appreciation of the holiday. There was also an excellent collection of prints. I know the place is small and the exhibits vary often, but if you enjoy Latin culture this is a must-see. Great value too, $7 admission.
Very interesting and unique artwork in here. As with all museums, some of it I really connected with and others not so much. Some was a little too extravagant for me but may be just right for someone else. So if youre up for something a little different, I recommend checking it out on sundays as its free.
I cant give a proper rating on the exhibit itself because I was denied entry into Mexic-Arte I arrived at 4:30 on a Monday. They close at 6 on Mondays right? WRONG. It had already closed. It was cold and rainy and the doors were already sealed shut. There was a woman at the desk and I signaled for her to come open the door. She came to the door but didnt open it. She simply came to the door and signaled with her hands for me to get going. Almost in a Shoo! Bad dog kind of way. I was appalled by such actions, she could have told me that they closed early but no..SHOO! Looked like a cool place but whatever.
What a neat find! We stumbled upon this little museum as we were walking and decided to check it out. We discovered that they offer free admission on Sundays, though donations are requested if possible. They are currently hosting a Día de los Muertos exhibit, which features lots of current Mexican artists. A very educational and intriguing exhibit that you may not expect to find in downtown Austin. A great representation of Mexican art and culture and as a Spanish teacher, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. Definitely check out the gift shop for some unique finds!
I really apprecieate this gallery. Its well curated and helps to fills the gap of cross-cultural art in Austin. The last opening that I attended had photographs, large paintings, an instillation piece, and even mariachis. A full experience of art from across the border. They also have a large gift shop in the front which is fun to poke around.
Will never come back due to their customer service. I went once before in the summer and another customer had asked to use the restroom and they nicely let her use it. I came back a second time during their day of the dead festival and I paid to get into the museum to look around, we also shopped at the store and asked if I could use the restroom and they said no, I told them last time I was here they let a customer use it and the girl rudely say well it’s only for employees, I am pregnant by the way and it’s hard finding places on 6th street that let you use the restroom if you’re not a customer. I was a paid customer here at the museum and also pregnant so felt it wasnt very customer service friendly. We ended up walking up and down the street looking for a place because I had to pee really bad and was holding my pee until we found somewhere that let me. We didn’t end up going back into the museum even though we paid and was already in there because of their rudeness.
This quaint little museum packs lots of cool and unique, eclectic exhibits and art pieces from local artists and Mexican artists.Since the wife and I went during October, Dia De Los Muertos theme was very prominent. There were authentic altars, great still photos depicting official Dia de Los Muertos scenes from Mexico and a big Jack Skelington type sculpture front and center. Equally as interesting are some of the thought provoking descriptions accompanying the pieces. Its a awesome spot to come with little ones and at $5 its an affordable. Come check it out!
Wanted to go for many years, a small charming museum with exclusively Mexican art/cultural exhibitions, when I was there a saw a wonderful day of the dead show, with several family alters, various scaled brightly colored paper mache sculptures, and historical prints and a video presentation, great gift shop with a range of gifts and Mexican candy chocolate and drinks, all against a soundscape of a exquisitely creaking wooden floor

Greatest little museum in Austin; they do a great job with connecting with the community in general and displaying a variety of art work. Dont underestimate this museum, its easy to do when you walk by the 5th @ Congress location BUT DO NOT pass it up, if you have time stop in and check out what its all about. The Christmas party is great as is the Dia de Muertos event.

2021-07-14Cute place but very small. It’s a self guided tour which was hard since I have small kids. Lots to look at but hard with kids as they didn’t enjoy it as much. Wish there was some kind of audio to help us know more than the written material so the kids could enjoy too.It was reasonable in pricing and there’s a small gift shop as well.

2021-06-30This was my favorite museum on our recent trip to Austin. I loved the friendliness of the staff, the option to wear a face mask if you wanted to, the creative art and all of the displays. Be sure to check out the gift shop on your visit. Wont regret it one bit!

2022-05-07Small place but overall nice. Has a cover for most days but its cheap. Sundays are free. Its nice how it covers the local anti-klan movement and the resistance to government.

2021-11-01Its a nice place but we expected to see more honestly. 2 years ago we went to viva la vida and was very nice. Price is fair $7 per person and $1 for little ones. Good paintings and colorful walls!

2021-06-27Great museum that showcases Mexican and latinx artwork. Admission is free on Sundays! The museum is wheelchair accessible. It’s nice and cool inside which is great for a hot summer day. There isn’t a restroom available for patrons, so we had to use the CVS across the street. There is a fun little gift shop in the front which you can visit without paying admission to the museum. My only suggestion would be for the museum to offer captions on the television. There was a short interview shown on the television and it was hard to hear. I hope they will add this soon so the movie will be accessible to all patrons.
