This museum is a must see!!! It is well planned out and very authentic. The landscaping is correct for each building. Well thought out and takes at least 2 hours to walk thru the entire display. They HSBC proud dressed people in the schoolhouse with a teacher and students showing how school was conducted in that schoolhouse. They have a blacksmith actually making things and he will tell you what he is doing and the methods used. This really takes one back into another time period to see how people lived back in the early days of ranching heritage. Make sure you take water with you if touring in the summer. Very hot out there. They do sell water along the way for $1/ bottle. Ask if the paths are concrete, so it is handicap friendly, and very fsmily friendly.
I had a wonderful time here, its been a while since Ive been here ever since the Pandemic of 2020. We discovered new informational places and animals plus extraordinary things of art😊😍. Great place to walk around the Ranch Heritage and look around the old houses 🏘️. Thank you.
Oh yeah, if you are interested in rural history (or were raised in 40s or 50s rural America), you need to see Dr. Marian Ann Montgomerys Cotton and Thrift exhibit. In addition, there are other exhibits of dinosaurs and early mammals, Native American art, pottery and textiles, a great collection of Chess sets and some really nice Western art.
If you are going to pursue Graduate Course in Civil Engineering, It is definitely not a good choice. Even if you mail your own academic advisor to ask course studies, they will revert you back when you about to graduate. I dont know about the other departments but civil department is worst.
I have taken my daughter here a couple of times. I also have visited on my own. I really like the Dinosaur exhibit, it is small but very informative. This museum has much more than natural history exhibits, and appeals to many different interests. I hope the citizens of Lubbock recognize the value of this museum and support it through the forseable future.
I dislike that most of the dinosaur displays are resin, and not real bones. The Dino displays have also not changed a whole lot over all in the last 20 years. The weather exhibit was interesting, but felt very cramped in the small room they have it crammed into. The Vampire/Werewolf exhibit was interesting. For a small museum over all they make good use of the space they have. I dont recommend seeing the art installation of the CDs on the floor with the flashing lights. Gave me a serious headache and could probably cause a seizure in someone prone to them.
Always a great experience with the kids and dinosaurs. If only theyd let me take the time for what I like. But Im glad they get excited when I say were going to the museum. I do wish there was something else a toddler would be interested in and learning about and get excited to visit.
I came here with my boyfriend for the first time and we had a great experience. Not all the exhibits were available but for the ones that were, it was a great place. Very quiet and clean. Great customer service. Very cool things to look at. Ill definitely be coming bavk.
An enjoyable experience for family, friends, or a date. Makes you appreciate the home you have, or grew up in, after seeing how families lived on farms and ranches a century ago. Check in advance and see if the Barton Home is open for interior viewing (an extra treat). Also note the headstone descriptions in the Childrens Cemetery.
I could have happily spent half a day on my own in either the Watkins ceramics or guitar history exhibits, but both were also fun to see with a small group with very different perspectives. We also spent a lot of time in the chess exhibit, including the playable set, which was really fun. Id love to see a YouTube channel about how they develop their exhibits.
What a wonderful museum. You will need several hours to cover it well. Do not miss the outdoor exhibits of TX history and wonderful display of how the lived. This museum is free to the public. We did not see the planetarium so I cannot comment. The museum has lots of really interesting exhibits. When we visited, several areas were roped off or closed, so we were done in about an hour and fifteen minutes.
Recently went to the ranching heritage candle light event and it was amazing. It was so cool In seeing the actors dress up and bring the historical building to life. I’ve also been here on the regular days and it’s so fascinating In learning about the history of each house at the museum!! Def it’s a must. You can also enjoy the inside of museum and they have a lot of cool displays about the Native American Cherokee and the cowboys. Also if you are looking to see the 6666 barn it’s a must!! It’s free to visit but you can also donate a few bucks if you can!! Enjoy!
This is one of my favorite places to bring my kids during the summer to cool down. They always have new exhibits and always very clean. The staff is always friendly. The best place to come and cool down from the summer heat and the kids will enjoy the dinosaur exhibit. Mine love it!
This is a wonderful place to spend a couple of hours with old bones, artwork, and special exhibits. I particularly enjoyed the temporary exhibit on chess. I dont even play chess, but the chess sets from around the world were beautifully made. The N.C. Wyeth paintings made to illustrate childrens books on exhibit made me want to re-read some of those books. Even if he did not consider his work fine art, the illustrations are attractive and thought-provoking. And worth viewing again and again.
This place is fantastic. Theres so little to do in Lubbock, and even less when you have no money. This place is free and informative, and you can take a good hour or so looking at the interesting exhibits. The theater is outstanding as well. My family and I have gone to many shows here over the years.
Loved it. We had a Great time. The expression on my 1 1/2 year old granddaughter was worth it all. She was so excited about everything she would see just wish we couls undrstand her wording more. But my other granddaughter still talk about their visit. They want to go back. My son n daughter n law will be taking them back soon. Recommend it highly especially as a family outing.
It is always a great deal of fun and very informative to visit The Ranch and Heritage Center at the Texas Tech Museum. If youre a resident of Lubbock or just visiting this is a must-see. Be sure to check for special events like the candlelight tour around the Christmas season its exquisite!
You can visit the museum if you are in Lubbock. Typically takes an hours time. You may spend more time if interested. The standard exhibits are about the Ice Age, model skeletons of dinasouros, paintings and photographs of native community or things related to Lubbock and its history. Grasslands and wildlife photographs are new additions. I could not visit the planetarium during all three visits.
My Pre-K team took our Pre-K students to the Ranching Heritage Center on a field trip. They LOVED it! During our Texas unit, we talked about early settlers in Texas, and how there was no running water, electricity, or indoor toilets. We talked about the dirt floor houses, no washing machines, or refrigerators, etc. This is something difficult for a Pre-K student to picture in their head, because all theyve ever known is modern living. Our students loved the actual visualization, and the freedom of movement..... walking, skipping, galloping between the buildings. This was a perfect field trip for 4-year olds! ❤️
Your portrayal of Native American art and the West in general wreaks of colonial undertones. Native American exhibit shows a lack of cultural understanding. Puebloan tribes and other Southwestern peoples such as the Navajo (Dine), are NOT the same and should not be grouped together. They have a conflicted past. Additionally, your display of Lubbock history is shamefully white. There is no mention of the contributions of African Americans or Latino Residents. Lubbock segregation is void from the conversation. This shows in my opinion, poor taste and perpetuates colonial and archaic ideologies. Get with the times.

2022-04-25Very nice history of Texas cattle and oil industries, interesting walk through time viewing restored buildings from early cabins to one of the 6666 barns. Also a really amazing static display of an actual stream engine with cattle cars next to loading corrals. My favorite was the very old squeeze chute! So much to see. They do not charge, only accept donations. Highly recommend this place. Make time to spend a casual couple of hours walking through the indoor and outdoor displays. You wont regret it.

2022-03-04It was a breath of fresh air visiting this museum. It has replicas of several dinosour sceletons. It has also real life replicas of various forest animals and birds. This place is really educational for young kids. They have historical visuals related to Lubbock. There are various old fashioned dresses there mostly from 60s. There is a small theater showing the change of volcanos over the years. The museum is free for everyone.

2021-07-30We went to the National Ranching Heritage Center at the Museum. This place is great. We took my 78-year old mother who was using a walker, along with several friends and family members yesterday. I did not know what to expect but it definitely didnt include the wealth of outside building exhibits they have. They are incredible. With buildings that span from the late 1700s to the early 1900s, the self-guided tour walks you through the history of how people lived in West Texas. One building is a replica; the rest have been transported to the Museum. Rooms have been outfitted with original furniture and decor and you can peek in to almost every building. In addition to homes, a schoolhouse, a church, and other buildings, there are several corrals, barns, and ranch outbuildings. Im disappointed to say those are the only ones we didnt get to as it got too warm and my mother was too tired.Indoors there was a beef breeds exhibit, as well as an exhibit on guns, and a charming little video presentation with cowboy stories. The gift shop was cute and not terribly overpriced. The staff was wonderful and we enjoyed a long friendly chat with the gentleman at the entrance counter on our way out. All exhibits were handicap accessible with the exception of several bronze sculptures which are located on a grassy patch along the front drive. We were able to borrow a wheelchair for Mom. Bathrooms were clean. This is a wonderful way to spend a relaxing few hours. I would go in cooler weather or as soon as they open as so much of it is outside. Definitely will go again sometime to see the rest of it. I hear that have a fun Halloween event and gorgeous Christmas lights.
