Ok. Where do I start. This was my 3rd time coming. It was clean as normal but the food was ok. I ordered the pork rinds and most if them was so hard I couldnt eat them. I than asked about several items that was not on the menu anymore and or they was out. On a Saturday. My friend and I got drinks. She got a long Island ice tea and I got a cranberry and vodka. They may want to retrain their bar tenders cause the drinks where so strong and you can tell they over poured. Loosing money forsure. Best thing about our experience is our waitress skyler she was super sweet. Even tho I felt like she kept having to go ask what was still in stock on the menu she did an amazing job. We tipped her a $20.00. She well deserved it. 👏
I heard it has changed owners recently. I dont know. When we walked in the place wasnt even half full and they said it was at least a 45 minute wait time on the food.Their waitstaff arent very well trained. The server didnt even know if they had Jack at the bar. We asked if they had Jack and she said, I think we do. I know we have Jack and Coke. I ordered a Jack on the rocks, with an ice water. She asked, if I wanted it in a short or tall glass. I said, short. The bartender brought me a tall glass and said that the server didnt specify tall or short. We got the fried mushrooms as an appetizer, they looked very small, wasnt any whole mushrooms. The breading on them was tough. When we bit into the first one it wasnt even hot. It was warm, wasnt hot, like it sat for a while.I had the grilled catfish. It wasnt very good, not for a restaurant. It was more like steamed catfish.I asked for another Jack on the rocks. The server brought me a Jack and coke. She said, the bartender accidentally put a little coke in it. Would that be ok or did she need to take it back? I said, that would be ok. When I tasted it, the coke in it was really bland, like they were using a generic coke instead of Coca Cola. I told her that I wanted her to take it back and get me just Jack on the rocks.I doubt Ill ever go back.I will say that everyone was really nice and courteous. No attitudes. The tables were really sticky too.We moved tables after our dinner, to sit with some friends and they commented on their table too.
I live in Gilmer and Ive eaten at Open Range under the old and the new management and I absolutely love it. The food is great. The service is the friendliest you will find in East Texas. The price is reasonable. To the naysayers, maybe check your entitlements at the door! Open Range is by far the best family sit-down, dine-in restaurant within a hundred miles. Im not a drinker so I cant speak to the bar, but I love the music that gets played.
Edit: 03/06/2019I went back a second time at the insistence of a good friend who eats there regularly and had a salad that was fine. I do plan on returning with my son for a real second try.I had really been looking forward to eating here but I was so disappointed. My son and I arrived shortly after 6 pm and it was not too busy. We ordered the cheesy breadsticks as an appetizer. For my entree, I ordered the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, and green beans. My son ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich. We were served our appetizer 30 minutes after placing our order. The cheesy breadsticks were hot and served with marinara. Meanwhile, two tables that came in after us were served their food. I asked our waitress what was going on and she said the kitchen was the problem. Our entrees made it to the table shortly after the appetizer. My mashed potatoes were cold and the green beans were too salty. The batter on the chicken fried steak was so salty I had to peel it off and just eat the steak and gravy. The roll was good! The boy enjoyed his buffalo chicken sandwich and fries. I had just about made up my mind that I would not return, but some very dear friends have convinced me to join them during their regular weekly visit. The picture was taken of what I didnt eat.
Very unsatisfied. I came to pick up my order and my drink isnt even full and my burger didnt have anything on it just cheese what happened to the pickup lettuce tomato and onion? And the cheese isnt the Swiss I asked for I am never going back if this is what Im to expect
Should have never reopened. I ordered a 8oz ribeye, and they brought me a quarter inch thick shoulder with no marbling. I told my waitress about this bone-dry steak that was brought out and she went and got the owner. The man claiming to be the owner just shrugged his shoulders and said he did not care to make it right.BE WARNED the service and food quality is not as advertised. New owners destroyed what open range used to be. This is also not the only bad experience my family has had with the new reopening.
The food was good, the waitstaff very good, however the bar staff was either new, having technical difficulties, no change issues (coin box unavailable?) Understaffed, whatever... Priorities missed out on a fair amount of sales. Overall a nice experience but could have been much better.
First of all the prices online are not the same as when you get there. Suppose to be 10.99 for chicken fried steak it was 16.99. Then you could not eat it taste like someone poured whole salt shaker in it and the meat tastes old. The green beans were nasty tasted like they have been sitting on stove all day. Mashed potatoes only good thing. Kids burger is a hockey puck for sure will never go back.
Not impressed at all, I dont appreciate having a tip on my ticket. I am capable of deciding what a waitress is worth. Most times I leave a $20 tip even if 20% is $5. But since you added it....thats what you got.Chicken fried steak had too much breading. Baked potato came when I was almost done with my CFS.My nephew ordered his very thin ribeye medium rare and it was medium well.Just not impressed at all.First and last time Ill eat there.
It was the 1st time we ate there & husband picked it up to bring home. We ordered 2 chicken fried steaks, 2 side salads, 1 mashed potato, & 1 baked potato. 1 salad was missing & the baked potato was SUPER old! It smelled almost of wet dog. The sour cream looked like cottage cheese. I was very upset. However that was THE BEST CHICKEN FRIED STEAK!!!! My husbands mashed potatoes were amazing! Thats why I gave them 3 stars. I will.try them again because I worked as a waitress for years & I know stuff happens. Hope to change my review with my next order!
This was my very first experience and absolute last unless I am forced to come back! The atmosphere alone was not inviting in the least bit. The rows of tables that are mis-matched between nicely made wooden tables and cheap plastic one screams we ran out of money during the build process OR we would rather be a bar then a $20 per plate dinner destination. We were greeted, sat and drinks were ordered graciously and promptly. Our waitress was super attentive, friendly and towards the end of our visit was extremely apologetic. First sign that we should have gotten up and walked out was when we were informed there were no straws yet bar was stocked with straws. I questioned myself if the bar and restaurant were separate entities. Clearly they are not. The appetizer selection was limited and decent. Pork Rinds were great! We ordered appetizers, a hamburger which was good, steaks w/baked potatoes, salad and a veggie and a chicken strip to-go order. When the steaks came out, three of the four steaks were extremely under-cooked. Two were ordered Medium and came out Very Rare, still refrigerator cold in the middle and lightly brown on the outside. Our waitress asked if she could take them back to have them re-cooked, we declined. The baked potatoes were ordered fully loaded and were delivered half raw, hard, with butter, no sour cream and minuet amount of shredded cheese and cold. The veggies were cold and flavorless. The salads were missing croutons and were lettuce was limp with an overload of dressing. The moment this experience turned from a three star notice to the owners that some attention needs to be had, into a ‘I have to give this place a star to make a review’ was when the lady owner stumbled to my table, clearly drunk, trying to explain her reasonings for the steaks arriving at my table still Moo-Ing. She was rude, over bearing and extremely disrespectful. At one point listening to her ramble on about how they purposely under-cook their steaks so the heat lamp can finish cooking, I said excuse me Ma’am... and was going to express my thoughts, she leaned across the table standing above me and loudly attempted to dominate the conversation, forcing her opinion on me while sticking her finger in my face. The only reasons I didn’t stand up and put this lady in her place was because my mother and my children were sitting at the table with awme. I have never experienced an OWNER come to a customers table combative, loud with no regrets that her kitchen staff clearly messed up the order. I found out that she stood there, defending them, telling us this is the way she likes her steaks cooked was because her husband, the Co-owner was the cook! After a quick interlude with staff, my oldest daughter and I came to the conclusion that this place should be the next episode of Kitchen Nightmare and needed Gordon Ramsey’s help. The final straw that left me with my jaw dropped was when the other OWNER, The Husband, stumbled from the bar also clearly inebriated, asking us if everything was good. Our reply was, No! And we walked out without further discussion. Under-cooked steaks and lifeless veggies aren’t my complete complaint.... the management/ownership of this establishment is!!! I don’t put bad reviews up because everyone, including restaurant staff and owners have off days but NO ONE who expects to have a successful business should act the way these owners have. We paid $150 for this dinner and went to Jack-In-The Box to eat. SMDH!
I was here for a company party. The main dining area had a great ambiance. The party room not so much. The staff was very friendly and attentive. I had the onion rings for an appetizer. They were great! For my main course I had the philly cheese steak and fries which was pretty good as well. They lost a star due to the bathroom was not the cleanest it could have been. Overall I would recommend eating here.
My sisters who are both over 70, went to eat there, Friday the 26th. They sent there food back because the steak they got was overcooked. A man came out, said he was the owner. He had a cap on and a white beard. He berated them until they were almost in tears. If you run or own a restaurant, you should know better. Shame on you! You have no business being in the food service industry. Shame on you! I will Make sure to pass the word by mouth and on social media about such a rude owner and hope you learn a lesson on how to treat pe3.
Food is over priced and not even that good. I had to send back my steak 3 times because they don’t know what medium rare is. My steak came back well done each time. And when I talked to the owner she just shrugged it off. Didn’t care the I was paying 10.99 before tax for my meal. My server was wonderful and the atmosphere is homey and friendly. But if I’m going to Pay the same amount of money at open range like I do at Texas Roadhouse or outback I expect it to be cooked right.
My daughter likes the macaroni and cheese. Their pizzas are good but take a long time to make. The sweet potato fries and fried pickles are excellent. I enjoyed a blue moon while there. We had an ice cream when we left. The pecan praline was perfect. Its a nice casual place with great service but no rush. And that is just fine.
Food was great! Chicken Fried Steak special $8.99 cant beat the deal. Fries greasy and slightly under cooked, service was almost non existent. Out of drink Midway thru meal never had any offers to refill til we both finished eating, then waitress asked if I wanted a refill, said no thanks check please. I wished her service was as quick as her producing my check(lightening speed) . Heads up this place charges you 3.75% to use credit/debit cards ( small sign up on register bar area, youll have to find it because they dont tell you they charge this) Needs alot of work on Service, but food is good overall
Edit to Add: The restaurant is now closed and up for sale citing management cannot get anyone to come to work.My steak was not cooked to order. The waitress delivered the food and did not come back until the meal was finished. She only took $2 off. I doubt Ill be back.
The service was slow, she missed half the order, the fish tasted like cardboard, the baked potatoes was half raw, the pork rinds were cold and burnt. I have been wanting to go there every since I heard about the pork rinds coming to the table still sizzling. Not going back thanks.
Great wait-staff, very friendly, pork rinds are wonderful, The Works is the best pizza in town. Twenty dollars fed two people, with two to go boxes. The owners are incredibly friendly. Saturday is live band night. There is an abundance of seating, pool tables, a bar... this place is spectacular.Ask for Callie...
We ate there last night and wont be back. The service was slow and she didnt bring things we needed for our meal. The steak was over seasoned to where you couldnt taste the actual steak and I dont believe it was a Ribeye, the chicken strips were hard, dry and nothing but crust, lastly the fish was bland. Needless to say we werent happy. The only good part were the Pork Skins. Should have gone to Roadhouse for that price.
Went here on a Wednesday with friends, myself and one person split a large to topping pizza and it was good, but not anything to write home about. The dough was good, but felt like it code have been cooked a little longer, toppings were plentifully and good, but the crust was the one thing I was not a fan of. The service was prompt and good, we both ordered drinks and those were brought out very quickly which was nice. May have to return next time I am in Gilmer on a busier night to see how the atmosphere is, but it was nice when we were there and they had someone playing music on stage.
We work at a veterinary clinic in ordered $40 worth of food and did not get some of our food and upon calling back and talking to the owner he hung up on us and was very rude. He told us he could bring us our food later on but what good would that have done if we were in the middle of lunch and we would have already ate our food. They were just rude all the way around theyre usually not like that
This was one of the worst eating experiences Ive ever had.Our drinks were always empty, our food got to us lukewarm, it took almost 40 minutes to get it (for some at our table 50 minutes), and the place wasnt even that busy! On top of that, there was an $8 cover charge for a band that only played 3 songs...which we didnt even come for. The food is overpriced; to get cheese on a burger it is an extra dollar and the burger is already $8. Then, if you want three small pieces of bacon on it you have to pay another dollar-and-a-half.I nearly forgot! It took another 45 minutes to receive our bills even after we asked for them on three different occasions. We were ignored, disrespected, and a couple of table that OUR WAITRESS served came in later than us and received their bills before us.If you have nothing else to do the day you come to Open Range, then this is the place for you. But if you do have anything else to do that day, then stay away from this place. There are plenty of lovely eateries in Gilmer to allow you to not give this place business.
Had the Hungry Man pizza. Even my 9 year old picky eater ate some. Try the Cowboy Corn Bites, theyre a nice twist on corn nuggets. Fun atmosphere with live much. The chicken fried steak and burgers were good as well. Service was good for a busy Saturday night with a live band. Give this place a try if you havent already
Pizza was awsome! Ckn fried steak...pretty small for the price, same as mashed taters. Both was real though so thats a plus. Have live entertainment there, pretty good, sort of loud though for the families having children with them...but you can order takeout if you wish, like i did cause menu says delivery but they dont deliver.
I call in for a pizza for the kids and burgers for my husband and me to take home. Always really great. Wait time is 15 minutes. I havent eaten inside or seen any of the live music but I noticed several pool tables and tvs. A little pricey but the quality is worth it.
This place is not star worthy...period! I am not one to write a review for anyone, but tonight, moments after walking into the open range and literally less than 10 steps into the building, I was told by the owner that I was too messed up (not the words the owner used) to enter their establishment, and the owner questioned what was I smoking. This discrimination and ignorant judgment towards me came from the owner based on zero correspondence with me. First of all, I had just come from a family birthday dinner and was not messed up. Second, I have never used an illegal drug in my entire life and take much pride in that. I will not apologize that I was on call this week and worked 70+ hours and may have looked a little run down. I work too long and too hard for my money to patronize a place like this. Advice to you all.. .Dont judge a book by its cover and do yourself a favor and stay away from this place!
Just enjoyed our first visit there for lunch. Specials were very affordably priced. We got there @ 11:45, just before the lunch crowd showed up, but there is ample seating so we didnt feel crowded. The service was excellent and the food was great. We live in the area and I wish I had known about this place before now. Well definitely be going back.
Friday close to 6. Right before band came in. A buddy and I went to try out Open Range. First off waiter took 13 minutes to come take our drink order. Came back after 3 or 4 minutes with drinks. Then took appetizer order and our orders. One was the mushroom burger special and other a steak rare. I had worked 15 hours that day and was dehydrated and got a water. After the waiter took out drink order she never came back. 48 minutes latter I carried my water cup to the bar and got a water refill from him. Sat at the bar for 20 more minutes untill we had decided to just leave. As I was walking towards the door after 70 minutes of being there, the waitress comes out with our food. We decided to stay and taste the food. Mistake. Burger and fries were the same temp as the plate and vegies, cold. Fried pickles were actually in really good. I would reccomend them. Steak was not even rare. It was raw. Outside looked seasoned really well but inside looked frozen. My buddy who always eats rare steaks even said he was going to take it home and cook it a little more. Music was a little below what I expected but what made it bad was the girl with the band fan girl yelling from the tables. Over all will only go back to get fried pickles and will get then to go.
Small unmarked parking lot. Surprisingly, you enter a large spacious dining area. There are pool tables, a dance floor, a juke box and a bar. I was greeted and seated right away. My food came out exactly as ordered. Everything was hot and fresh. The chicken fried steak dinner was delicious. The restaurant was clean and the staff was friendly.
We have been going there for awhile and I have noticed that if you get fish on Friday night you are safe! But if you eat anything else you do not. get portions that are equillivent for the price you pay! Please have no problem with your food because the owner will basically call you a liar and use the excuse that they are packed that is not an excuse if so then you need to build a bigger kitchen and hire more well trained wait staff. We will go again but never again on Friday they should just do pizza and drinks maybe they could handle that!!!I hoping that Jayden and Margie have not quit they are the best of the wait staff!
The food there is always good however the order was screwed up not once but twice and it was too noisy in the building. The owner and the waitresses and everyone there a really really nice people. I can usually give them a 5-star rating today just wasnt that day. I dont care who you are sometimes everybody has a bad day
Friday evening, party of 2. One wanted a RibEye, the other a TenderLoin. The only SteakHouse in Gilmer had neither. 🥴 WHAT? 🙄 (Shake My Head) Resigned to fried catfish and CFS. Yawn. Come on Gilmer.Dont make me drive to Avinger to get a decent steak when were in town (at the States Greatest Recreation Area).
Worst pizza I have ever had. A frozen pizza from Walmart is much better. The owner was very rude when we mentioned the quality was not very good. He told us if we didnt like it to not come back. No problem we will never be back. Ive added to this review on 12/05/2018, this is over 11 months and I have not been back. With rud owners like them I will never be back.
Open Range is well worth your visit to Gilmer. Great food, wonderful service and pleasant atmosphere. You feel welcome and are treated like family. Thank you for creating a nice place to go and enjoy a night out. Much success to the Littles as they build this business.
Catfish/Shrimp dinner yummy but 16.95 pricey. Was told 5 lg shrimp came with plate (4 sm. arrived) & hush puppies were included which we didnt ever recieve. Sirlion steak ordered as med/rare, it arrived well done & sent back. Mushy older mac & cheese = gross. Big baked potatoe was cold, arrived later than 1st plate served, 2nd try the steak served was cooked as ordered but was so heavily drenched in salt couldnt eat it either. Manager cleared our table while I sat hungry... was very rude, didnt listen, told us to leave. (* Server was a nice person.) Very dissappointed overall. Not the place to go as cook messed up my order twice, was out of items & shorted food plus treated like krap. Saddly, Not enjoyable 1st visit there.
Had some bad experiences here with food not being cooked properly or thoroughly but decided to give it a try again. I decided yo order a small pizza to go since their pizza is always good and you get what you pay for(which is what they started out as pizza pan) o ordered a small pizza for 9 bucks and when i came to pick up it wasSMALLER THAN A PERSONAL PAN AT PIZZA HUT)MAYBE THIS WOULD BE A GOOD LUNCH IF I WAS 3 YEARS OLD!!! I NOW FULLY BELIEVE THAT THE ONLY REASON THIS PLACE STAYS BUSY IS NOT BECAUSE OF THE FOOD OR SERVICE BUT DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT HAS A OPEN BAR AND POOL TABLES IF IT HAD NEITHER OF THESE PEOPLE WOULD NOT COME.THE LONGER ITS IN BUSINESS THE WORSE IT GETS (JUST SAYIN THE LAST TIME I CAME A FAMILY OF FOUR EATING CONSERVATIVELY COAT AROUND 55 TO 60 BUCKS AND FOR SOME THAT IS A WHOLE DAY WORTH OF PAY JUST NOT WOR5H IT ANYMORE

2022-06-04This place is amazing! We dropped in for lunch at about 12:30 pm on a Saturday. We almost didnt stop because there wasnt a car in the parking lot. The open sign was on so we went on in. And boy, am I glad we did!! We were greeted and seated right away. The fresh pork rinds with boom boom sauce were amazing! We both had the chicken fried steak lunch special, and were absolutely blown away by how good and tender it was. Portions were large and the meal was well presented. The restaurant was clean and tidy, and they were preparing for the evenings live music event. I wish I had asked our server his name, because he deserves a great review for his service and personality. I cant believe that this place wasnt packed full when you offer food and service this good. We will definitely be back for more and look forward to it.

2022-04-14It was a pretty nice spot. I honestly didnt know it was there. The inside is a lot better than the outside. The only thing I didnt like was that the kitchen closed before we arrived (8:50 or so). We went to a performance at the Civic Center that finished at about 830pm. We were left to only being able to order pizza (which was pretty damn good, I must say), but wouldve preferred to order from the menu. Anyways, the manager may want to see if anything is going on in the city before cutting the kitchen hours. Just a suggestion. Id give it another try should I be in that area again.

2022-04-14Had the rib eye...nicely cooked with tasty sides. Prices were fair for the portions. Big dining area with a bar, stage and dance floor. Live music when we walked in, could have been a little lower volume for the dinner hour but the country selections were nice. Axe throwing range in the room next door...range master was very nice and informative...good experience overall...👍👍

2022-02-13New ownership... food was great but service was so slow we almost left before our drink orders were taken. The cook ended up waiting on us because the wait staff was horribly slow. He did great though and made the experience worth the trip though. 5 stars if the actual wait staff had been better.

2022-04-14We eat here all the time. They have ordered a particular bourbon just for my drink when we visit. The food is always great. I have yet to get a waiter or waitress that didnt let us have a great time. Btw. The axe throwing is fun as hell.

2022-04-01Not bad food. I considered the steak but it was pricey. I went with the cat fish both nights. The first night fried and grilled the next night. Both were good but the fried was best. The pork rinds and queso were awesome. There is an axe throwing place connected. It was awesome and priced well. Forgot to get pics. The place was about 20% full on a Saturday night.

2022-05-08Great night out with friends. Steaks were good and the corn bites were amazing! Family atmosphere. We stayed to listen to the live band, Dagnabits. Had an enjoyable experience.

2022-07-01Last night was my birthday and we were in Gilmer, so I decided we would just celebrate here at Open Range. It was wonderful. My wife and I both had the Ribeye steak and Man, it was fantastic. No complaints here. Our waitress was so friendly, as they always are. She is the one that took the pic. All I have is praises for this place. Keep up the good work. We would both love it if you would add Baked potatoes as a side to the menu, but that is not a deal breaker for us. Just a suggestion. See you soon.

2022-05-15Mothers day was a nightmare there. They invited all Mothers to come for a free meal. Fantastic right? Well, the fryers were broken, the grill was down so it was an hour & 1/2 wait. As we sat there we noticed only 3 tables had people sitting & waiting. All the other tables were trashed. No one was bussing. They were all talking to each other ignoring what needed to be done. So, finally our food came out & my steak was practically moving.I sent it back & it was the same as it was.Thank you for the free meal. It was interesting 🤔 & yes. We tipped or waitress very well.

2022-06-16From what I understand, this restaurant is very good...thats why I gave it two stars. We tried ordering from them through DoorDash, though, and after waiting for some time, were told they werent using DoorDash anymore. If you own a restaurant, and you decide NOT to use a delivery service, then take your restaurant off the list. Maybe its more complicated than that, but making people wait until past 8 p.m. thinking their food will be on the way, and then telling them that youve decided not to be on the delivery service anymore is neither professional nor good for business.
