Oscars Mexican Restaurant in other cities:
Great food if you can find it! This restaurant is hiding behind two hotel and a gas station/ convenience store (7-11). Entrance is off back driveway for Motel 6, one small sign on highway 351 north (Ambler Ave. south). Any restaurant that can survive there is gaurenteed good food 🥑. Breakfast all day which is nice for travelers, light menu for kids and seniors for those of us that really dont eat much. Lunch specials and a full dinner menu that will make your decision hard.
Good Mexican food, (or Tex-Mex) is almost ALWAYS very subjective. (you can tell that from the vast extreme of reviews on here) What I like, you may despise, (and vice-versa) IMO, Tex-Mex is known by ground beef, lots of cheese, and salsas that will set you on fire. Traditional Mexican food is mostly chicken-based items, along with seafood. If there IS beef in the enchiladas / etc, its typically shredded beef. (I personally prefer Tex-Mex) Having been born, and raised in Texas, and spent most of my life there, gotta say, this is a pretty good place. Ive been working in Abilene, (I dont live here) and Im always on the lookout for a good Non-chain restaurant.. I came in, I ordered Carne Gusida, because I read it was very good here. It was. Granted, it was early in the evening, and the restaurant was not crowded yet, but my service was exceptional! ....got my food quicker than most fast-food places. When the Carne Gusida came, it was so hot, I could hardly eat it....and the tortillas were so hot, I couldnt even hold them. This was Top 5 all time Carne Gusida in my book. (and thats an honor) Word of advice: Dont let the extremely modest exterior of the restaurant fool you, Go on in, and try it. (I almost didnt myself)
Great Hidden place to get a bite to eat.. friendly staff, youre able to call in your order to eat there if you are short on time, so its ready when you arrive.. I recommend trying the Chihuahua (pictured below divided into 2 portions) .. you also get chips and tasty hot sauce before your meal.
Absolutely love how friendly and personalized the service is. My kiddos are always interacted with and not just ignored like most server staff does. Affordable for a larger family, best salsa in Abilene hands-down!! Tucked away for a more private dining in experience. My favorite agave based margaritas!! Been enjoying their food and service for 4 years now.
We whipped in here in a whim and we were not disappointed in the least. The food was great. Some parts out of this world, some parts just okay but nonetheless it came fast, was hot, fresh, and we cleaned our plates. The service was great, and the atmosphere was friendly. The chicken enchilada with sour cream sauce and the cheese enchilada with red sauce were perfect. We hope to travel through here and stop again.
The service and food was terrible. Our waitress who was also the manager didn’t give us time to finish ordering before moving on to the next person at our table. The food was not fresh. The meat on the tacos we ordered was dry and had absolutely no flavor, the tomatoes on the tacos were one small SLICE of tomato on each taco, and the shredded cheese clearly came out of a bag. One of us ordered the enchiladas with sour cream sauce but the “sauce” was just sour cream spread on top and thrown in the microwave. The ranch we were given tasted sour and old. We informed our waitress/manager that we weren’t satisfied with anything and she only took one meal off of our ticket before doing so she said “I mean no one else has complained about the food” and that the ranch was fine. She had also added a drink before hand and after we seen the ticket she removed it. We had to pay $53 for food that wasn’t even worth $10. Our original ticket would have been over $70 for FIVE meals that we weren’t satisfied with at all and only ONE had been eaten. I 100% do not recommend going to this restaurant. Don’t waste your time or money.
It sucks because we absolutely love the food and coming here, but whenever we do order, the service is awful. It almost is always a pain just to put in a simple order over the phone, the person taking the order sounds annoyed, then when picking up the food. I don’t understand the “attitudes” or feeling like an “inconvenience” when simply paying for food.
The salsa was decent and thats the only good thing I can say about this place. Service was slow, we asked for tea and got water. We requested customizations to our oder and the waitress insisted that we didnt change anything. We corrected her 3 times until she wrote it down right. In the end, the food just didnt taste good and we wont be back when there are better places to go like Miguels and Alfredos.
Discovered this good place on a visit to the area and went there two days in a row. Really nice atmosphere in this establishment. We are always looking for good chips and salsa , fresh tasting and homemade tex mex dishes and we were certainly pleased to get these here. Fast friendly service and the breakfast burritos were big and awesome. Can’t wait to go back!
Walked in and was immediately greeted and sat to a comfortable booth. Then had my refreshing sweet and I do mean actually sweet tea served quickly. I wasnt rushed to order. The server was extremely nice and patient with my hungry self. The food was extremely delicious. Fantastic experience. I will definitely go again!!
Locally owned, family run Mexican food restaurant featuring owner invented dishes, some quite original such as Street fajita tacos made with steak fajita meat, Pico diguyo and sauted onions....5 in all served with rice and beans by friendly waitresses. I will certainly return on my next trip thru Abilene TX.
Last time we ate there the service was terrible there was people who got there 15 minutes after and were served before us .They had ran out of salsa and just gave us chips order two sweet teas they ran out of tea and served it to the customers who got there 15 minutes after us. Food never arrived i am guessing because we were not country people. This place is for white bread people who like bland mexican food.
Awesome! Food, staff and even the coffee were all amazing. Very pleased. Ordered takeout for dinner because we were staying at a hotel nearby. We were so pleased with the takeout order (street tacos) we decided to come back to dine in for lunch the following day and were equally pleased! We will be returning soon!
Ordered the tamale dinner. Everything was good except the canned cheese covering the tamales. Even Velveeta would have been better. Loved the chips & hot sauce. Excellent service -- my tea glass was not allowed to get below 1/3 full, & the chips & salsa refills just kept coming!
I only gave 4 stars because when I had the chili relleno, it was full of seeds. Everything was full of flavor and tastes great. The only thing I hated was I got a mouth full of seeds with every bite I took. It seems like they prepare it how its suppose to but leaving the seeds inside. Also its very spicy and I had to eat it with sour cream to cool down every bite. Also the table salsa is very spicy. I have to dip the chips in it barely and that was very hot
Service was very good, but our food was salty. The salsa and chips were the best part of the meal. However, I usually get the street tacos and am very happy with that entree. The stacked enchiladas with the egg on top was the entree that I found to be very salty. My friend had the giant stuffed burrito. We agreed that it was the meat filling in both dishes that was way too salty.
Absolutely, the best food. My girlfriend had the chicken fajitas and I had the beef fajitas and they had the absolute best tortillas I have ever eaten. The tea was great and the pretty waitress was superb. It was a special occasion and the Best dining experience in a long time. I want to eat there everyday.
The service was great. The food on the other hand was not good at all. I had the Chihuahua enchiladas and i was not empressed at all the tortillas were not fried, enchilada sauce taste like it was canned, canned beans, really dry rice, dirty water cup. My wife fe ordered street tacos and she was not happy with the food at all, tortillas were soaked in cooking oil and no taste to the ingredients. This is far from being a mexican restaurant. The salsa and chips were good.
Went to the oscars on buffalo gap ( couldnt find its listing) . was only ok. i asked what the rellenos were wrapped in. they said breading. was not breading, but more of an egg thyme wrap ( at first i thought it was just soggy , then realized it was more an egg thing). the out side was kind of tasteless, the inside was meat and cheese. meat tasted ok but cheeses was kind of tasteless. one had queso on it and one had green sauce. disappointed in both sauces unfortunately. pepper was tasteless too, and i was really surprised about that. i live poblanos and eat a fair number of them. rice was fine, but beans lacked flavor as well. sorry to say i was very disappointed overall. 😔
Dont order the nachos! Chips were stale and they use nacho cheese from a can! Blah!Service was good. Restaurant was clean. Too bad the food was substandard.*Edit: Dear Owner thank you for responding to my post. I have raised the star rating to 3 instead of 1 because you care enough to take the time to respond. Concerning our visit. I did mention the canned cheese to an employee. Who was more than willing to change our order. We simply didnt have time to wait. I highly recommend getting rid of the gas station type nachos and go with real cheese melted under a broiler. We are willing to try your restaurant again only because you care.
The salsa is great, and the food is good but not amazing. The tortillas are thicker but have a great flavor and are homemade which I appreciate. The thing that bugged us the most was the queso they sell as an appetizer and use on some of the dishes is literally stadium nacho cheese, from a can i assume. My husband and I were both shocked at that and have never seen that at any Mexican restaurant before. Other than that, it was okay for the price.
I went to the location on Ambler and west lake road. While I was in line I viewed the food and could smell the odors in the place. There were flies all over the food, the waitress serving the food just wave her hand to move them. The place smelled of old dish water. I left quickly without ordering anything from that place.
Horrible!! . No flavor. Canned chicken and beans. (You can deff tell).. tacos came with WAY too much cilantro. No cheese.. queso (pretty sure )was canned also. Mind you.... i have eaten at Oscars in the past and it was authentic.. great flavor . NOPE. Not anymore. Too much cilantro in the salsa.. this Totally explains why there was so many empty seats. My wife couldnt even finish her burrito due to salty chicken and sour guacamole.. deff wasnt worth the 35$ we spent. We will be Sure to stay with Don luis.. MUCH better food.. service and hospitality...
Wow, Im a very satisfied customer. After moving to Abilene 5 yrs ago from San Antonio, I find myself constantly missing a authentic Mexican food restaurant. The food was delicious. I wish I would have thought to take a picture before eating. The service was very friendly, attentive, and quick. Most places in Abilene have a long wait when it comes to service, but I was impressed with our service. The food came out pretty quickly after we ordered but still was hot and tasted fresh. I think they may have The Flash helping them out lol. Friendly fast service and quality food. Definitely visiting again soon
NOT MEXICAN FOOD at all! This place is a joke. They say they are authentic Mexican but its not even close to being that. I guess they can get away with it with people who are from up north and have never had Mexican. If you want authentic Mexican and passing by El Paso TX, now that is what i mean about true Mexican flavors.
The food was ok but lacked authenticity. The enchiladas I ordered were small and did not have much cheese or sauce on the top. There are no actual margaritas or drinks besides beer. I called to one of the servers and got whats up in response. I suppose its an ok restaurant for the town its in but if I come back through here I wont be stopping again.
The waitress we had was not good. She kept forgetting to bring the extras we asked for. She never checked on her customers. I had to yell for her to get her to come over and let her know she forgot our sides. The food was okay but not what I expected. I expected authentic Mexican food and its more like a high end Taco Bell. Wont be back.
If I could give it less than 1 star I would...Went on 4/2/21 took us over 35 minutes to get an El Chito plate and a burrito...Never got chips & salsa(please dont say if you order breakfast you dont, since there was 3 other tables that got sat down and got chips & salsa while being seated)Food came out cold as ice also...WILL NOT BE BACK...Mi Ranchito is the place to go...
Best hole in the wall in Abilene. Had the chimichanga with beef and it was great! Kind of wished they offered a beef fajita option for it but it was so good none the less. The second I walked in it took me back to one of the places I used to go in Houston. There are not alot of good Mexican food places in Abilen but this is one of them.
Lord have mercy. For the cost you think the food wouldve tasted better. The sauce was too hot, could barely eat it. Queso is FAKE and powdery tasting. Its just not good Mexican food at all. Weve ate here multiple times but this was our last. Will definitely be going to Abuelos where its worth it.
I never write review... but I always read them. I’m not from Abilene, but was passing through and thought I’d stop here for lunch. After receiving my food I immediately regret my decision. Tex-Mex slop! I’m not a rude person so I didn’t bother to say anything to the waitress or send it back... I doubt it’s a mistake. Just a normal occurrence that everyone is used to or has accepted as normal. In fact, the waitress being kind is the only reason I’m giving them two stars. Because the food was flavorless garbage as far as I’m concerned. Oh well, now I know! I still tipped her 40%.
The family-run dedication to friendly service is obvious from every smiling face from Oscar at the door on throughout our Tuesday lunch. Our server handled a handsy toddler with ease. Their chips were warm and the salsa (served so smartly in a pitcher for the table with individual bowls) was fire!
My friend & I ate here a a couple of weeks ago & it the food was incredible! Some of the best Mexican food I’ve had in Texas or any state for that matter, & I’ve traveled all over. I got the sour cream chicken enchilada plate, which came with rice & beans. The chips & salsa were bomb! (Spicy, flavorful, aromatic salsa, that was not too thick, & not too chunky.) They serve the salsa in a self-serve container, & each individual gets their own salsa bowl, (which is great for double-dippers, clean-freaks, germaphobes, lol.)The service was so-so, which is why I’m giving it 4 out of 5 stars. I would definitely go back & recommend it!
Food was mediocre at best; canned nacho cheese as queso, meals were bland, seemed mostly frozen or canned food not fresh made. Large portions tho. The waitress was new but very polite and did a good job. Restaurant was clean with pretty wall paintings. My companions margarita was actually a dark green wine cooler and marg mix, not an actual cocktail. Overall I wouldnt return or recommend. 4 stars for atmosphere, price for portion, and good service. 0 for food and drinks.
Food is cold sevice was not good not offered something to drink had to ask and no refills!! People not friendly people leaning on the front counter not attending customers. We finally got drinks and no refills. Will not return sorry.. Hope it gets better for customer that do eat there they deserve better.
I had the Shrimp a la Plancha. If your tolerance for spiciness is low, steer clear of this dish. It is SPICEY HOT! The shrimp were cooked well and it was flavorful, but you may miss the joy factor of the meal if you cant handle the heat. Service was great, staff was friendly, and food was good. Go in and try it. Id eat there again.
I must say this is the first time I have ever left a review and I wish I could say it was a good one. After reading the reviews for this restraint I know the reviews people have no effect on the restraint there our 3 reviews that say the queso taste like nacho cheese out of a can these reviews our correct and yet nothing has changed. That shows lack of care by ownership me my wife and daughter waiited more than a hour for our food and the waitress was apologizing for how long it was taking 5 minutes after she took our order. I am new to abilene and am extremely disappointed in the Mexican food here I have ate at 4 different Mexican restaurants and have not had a good experience yet I will not be returning to Oscars.
First couple times we went food was excellent thought we found our new spot to eat. Today, aweful! Food was salty I couldn’t even eat it. Waitress who barely checked on us just said “sorry” and no offer to fix or get anything else. Went to cash out told the lady and she said “first time Ive heard that tonight.” Then as I was walking out had the nerves to call me rude. My money will never be spent at this location again and will not refer this place to anyone in the future.
I was worried when I first walked in, but a regular told me to try the street tacos. I added the chihuahua enchaladas and they were great also. Around 8pm people started coming in and by 9pm there were 5 tables with at least 20 people at them. All the other tables were full too. The locals obviously believe in this restaurant, and I will eat there again, if I am in town.
Excellent Mexican food with a large menu to choose from. Very good service and friendly people. I usually get the Chile Relleno plate. It comes with 2 large Chile rellenos, rice and beans. Its definitely a full meal place to eat. We go there when ever we are in Abilene.
My husband and I went through the drive thru tonight. He ordered super street tacos that came with beans and rice. The beans were hard, dry and completely inedible. There was rice stuck to the bottom of the box in a thick, solid layer. It seemed like that one box of rice and beans together was made yesterday at best, and was sitting out for a while before being served. The tacos were served exactly how they were ordered so that was nice, but they werent anything to write home about. The brown guacamole and old seperated sour cream were gross and also not eaten. The service was very friendly and didnt take too long. The rice and beans though 🤢
Oscars has a good Tex-mex offering on thier menu. One of my favorite things about it is that breakfast items are available all day long.It has a friendly Cantina style atmosphere with usually great service from the wait staff.Sometimes on very seldom occasions the quality of the food and service will go from excellent to just fair. I have noticed this to happen from time to time when they are either COMPLETELY OVERWHELMED with traffic or in off peak hours when there are hardly any customers at all.USUALLY you cant go wrong eating at Oscars, it is by far one of my favorites in the Mexican food arena in Abilene.
My family and I were really excited to have Mexican food today. What a let down, we came in right after lunch, had to wait an hour and when we got our food it was cold the rice was hard and it was all together discusting. This is by far the worst restaurant (Mexican )food my family and I have ever had. Very dissapointed p
Not even 15 minutes of being in the restaurant, they didn’t want to serve anymore because they were closing at 8:24pm when they are open until 9pm. They shoved the ticket in my face and demanded it was time to leave when there was 40 more minutes left of their day.I was not rude and I never am towards people but boy, YALL TAKE THE CAKE ON RUDENESS!
Definitely not authentic mexican food, not even tex -mex food. Altogether this place has distasteful food. They used a hamburger patty and made it into a chicken fried steak. Threw some sour cream on on what were suppose to be sour cream enchiladas and added cheese instead of a sour cream sauce. Hot sauce is just tomato paste with a hint of pepper. Horrible!! Service is ok but not if you are thirsty as they forgot about refills. First lady that took us to our table rushed us in ordering our drinks. They were very empty so dont know why the rush. You are better off going somewhere else.
First time here sat dec 2. Have stayed at whitten inn before, but never have walked around to see if theyre open. Hard to tell if open from side of motel. But the breakfast food was very good. Ate here 3 times over the weekend. If you leave here hungry, its your own fault. Generous portions to say the least

2022-07-13I love Oscar’s! I eat there any time I’m in Abilene, TX. Their Mexican food is always inexpensive and consistently good. I had the fajita beef quesadillas and they were really good. They had onions and bell peppers in them. I also got a side of rice and beans. I always love their chips and salsa. Plus, their cups are huge which means less refills. Who can’t get on board with that? I highly recommend this restaurant and feel like everyone should eat here.

2022-01-30Low key, fast service, quality Mexican fare. They currently let their liqour license expire so maybe it’s a good thing on your bill & body total?! It’s a great place to eat and be real ~~> we aren’t professional critics so this is a great place to also get over one’s self if you aren’t “wowed” by life/ bringing your own wow to life. 😬🙄🤭🤙🏻

2021-05-01I was staying at the Quality Inn next door and Oscars was highly recommended by the hotel staff. I walked on over and within minutes my server, Dasha, had me seated and served with nachos, salsa and ice water with lemon. I looked over the menu, asked a couple questions and ordered the #38 Durango Burrito Dinner (no jalapeños for me). In no time my dinner arrived nice and hot and looking good. Everything tasted fresh, quality and delicious. I ate the whole thing and enjoyed every bite. Dasha was awesome, atmosphere was a bit noisy but hey, it’s FRIDAY NIGHT and I’m glad they are busy. If I am by this part of the USA again, I will stop by Oscars! Thanks for a great dining experience.Bill from Baltimore Md.

2022-06-04If I could give a negative number I would. We ate here a few year ago and it was fantastic. It was so good that we made note of it so that when we passed this way again we would make sure to stop. BIG MISTAKE. Something has changed, drastically. Forget the lack of service, the food was disgusting. My wife had fajitas and i ordered the old persons cheese enchilada plate. My enchiladas were corn tortilla filled with ?something? and covered with fake plastic cheese sauce. The kind that you find on school lunch mac and cheese, the really bad kind. My wifes beef fajitas at first glance looked like they had been cooked the day before and then microwaved. But then the smell hit.... Something was very off with the meat. Not due to spices, but due to bad meat. We paid and left... It was not worth trying to discuss the meal as the waitresss only comment was people eat it all of the time...I was very very sad about this. We had been looking forward to going back for a meal as we had in the past.. Boy, were we wrong.

2022-07-10The best part of the entire meal was the tea, they only offer unsweetened tea. The queso was burnt looking and had no flavor. The sour cream chicken enchiladas were dry and lacked and flavor. Servers and hostess are kind, friendly and attentive but the food is absolutely horrible.

2021-03-20The food is good but it didnt leave me raving about it. So I wasnt disgusted or angry about anything, it just lacked a wow factor. The breakfast burritos are filling and are served all day. The lunch specials are a bit sparse in variety. I ordered a lunch special that had a cheese enchilada. There was no enchilada sauce on it. It was cheese filled which wasnt melted all the way and topped in a nacho type cheese. I expected red enchilada to be covering it so I was surprised and a bit let down. I appreciate them doing something different but it wouldve been better if it was an in house queso or something special like that. The kids portions are hearty. The chips and salsa is pretty good too. The salsa had a good balance of flavor and was a bit thin but still good. Friendly servers. All around good food, but nothing special as far as I can tell.

2022-03-08Brunch was fantastic, our server was very personable. We placed our order and was served in 8 minutes! The has been the fastest I have ever been served. I recommend this restaurant.
