Ive adopted twice from this shelter. Both are amazing dogs. We are really happy with them ! Also we adopted our first dog back in February and they allow meet and greets. So we were able to find our perfect play buddy for our dog! Adopt dont shop! There are many dogs with amazing personalities here 🐶💕
We went in to set up an adoption day for our store. I walked through to see the animals that were available. I found this little girl, paid a hold fee, thought about it over night, and came back the next day to claim her as ours! I talked to adoption specialist for easily an hour. I found them to be very knowledgeable, and considerate. I thought it was odd at first that I had to fill out paperwork just to meet her.... But I really kind of understand. Theyre very super serious here. So just know when you go in, that this is not an in and out place.
We had a very good experience. Our cat was spade and everything went well. She is doing fantastic. Thank you so much to the doctor, Naylli and staff. They are very caring for all these stray cats and dogs. They are trying their very best to help these poor animals.Thank you very much.
Recently there has been evidence of kittens in unsanitary conditions that the shelter has yet to come forth about. One hung himself in the kennel. Many of us have the photos on hand. This place needs to be shut down till it can be reformed. Their foster contract sucks as you must commit to only saying positive things about the shelter so they can look good. You guys are well funded. Theres no excuse. I only hope the other kittens made it out.
I’ve been fostering on and off through PVAS for the past year or so and have a past working for other no-kill shelters in Texas (Austin Animal Center/APA). They truly are doing outstanding work for the animals in the valley. They’ve made great strides over the past few years. The foster department works tirelessly to make sure the most vulnerable are getting the care they deserve. Even when I leave the valley, I can’t wait to see the accomplishments they continue to make in changing the communities attitudes towards animals and the treatment of animals. It’s tireless and thankless work, but it does not go unnoticed and they are continuing to grow and do the best they can. All the shelter employees have always been so kind and I can tell they care deeply about what they do.
Went in this morning to get my two dogs microchipped, they had that special of 5 dollars per pet, which is super economic! I felt like this place really cared about the animals, I called in and asked for help with one of my dogs cause i could not handle both and this nice guy came out to help me. Everyone there was in a good mood and the place looked clean and peaceful for the animals.
I was taking my pets to get vaccinated there and they ask for prepayment which I payed through a link they sent. the day of vaccination I unfortunately got sick and was not able to go and get my pets vaccinated. I called to let them know and was told that they were taking my money as donation. I told them that I didnt have money and needed it to vaccine tmy pet and was told there was nothing they could do. Unbelievable we went to them because I didnt have money and they end up taking advantage of an unfortunate situation. Now Im left with no money for the Vaccine.I thought they were here.to help the pets. She acted like all she wanted was to get of the phone and not deal with the problem.
Cleanest, nicest animal facility I have ever seen Staff is fantastic and they really do a great job entertaining the resident cats and dogs and are very knowledgeable. I adopted a little 3 month old kitten and we adore him. Please adopt and spay or neuter your animals. Do not let them run loose. Take care of them. They depend on us.
Animal cruelty , kittens stuck in a cage filled with fisces everywhere , no water, no food , and there sibling hanging by his neck dead in the middle of the cage !They actually find excuses and say that this was an isolated issue and it only happened once yet I have more then one picture of more than one cage and they are all the same !I have never ever seen an image as heart breaking as this . Its an image that will never leave my head .. and they walk past them everyday... Short staff or not there is no excuse !!??
There is a lack luster disdain for humble help for the actual animals. I am horrified at the passive action towards animals in general in the RGV. There is a seriously disheartening problem and I thought PVAS was the only true home of solutions-driven approach to these tiny (and not so tiny sometimes) voiceless souls we get the privilege of having as pets.I am seriously annoyed that after 32hrs of constant calling to animal services/shelters I only hear voice boxes are full, “we have limited” space, and please fill out forms. There are ample solutions to these problems and since I have the time and the knowledge, please reach out to me because I am tired of the efforts not being there. If it’s PR, community education and outreach, grassroots efforts, an actual crisis plan of action or any mediated needs I’m your gal. Obviously you have a team of dedicated professionals to copy and paste scripts denoting and de-escalating the calamities that are sometimes written on these boards but mind you, words only go so far with people honestly trying to help a living being. You all are a non profit organization that houses thousands of helpless animals and makes families whole! HOW can you not be happy with the gifts you give this area?! How can your volunteers not showcase that happiness as they try and HELP the dogs. The human factor is lost when y’all answer phone calls with an angry tonality and frustration in your voice.PLEASE I implore you to create a humanistic approach to your methodology and organizational delivery via telephone and through your phone tree systems. If you are scripting your responses vary it up! If there aren’t enough volunteers, make a campaign strategy with local school districts and their student bodies. Create new strategies surrounding NEW procedures to meet with current guidelines. UTILIZE the monetary resources and restructure to benefit the animals first. A big building with big billboard tells the wrong story...... (mismanagement of PUBLICLY AND PRIVATELY GIFTED FUNDS)PRIORITIZE, your efforts so that the facades that you are telling through your online narratives actually showcase the NEED physically in your facilities.Your website shows one story that is misleading and you loose trust and buy in from the community. Thus your overpopulation of animals continues because your resources are not held to an importance to the community.Anyway, please know that I am going out of my way to help the animal I was hoping you all would help. My heart hurts for those animals that would be bypassed because of ill-experiences from community constituents that tried and were failed by your services. I am bless to give this dog a fair chance now but many don’t and look to your organization for the help in that process.Train your staff, educate volunteers to educate the community, and do things for the good of the voiceless.Have a blessed day and feel free to reach out to me on this VERY PUBLIC FORUM if you do so wish.
The place is very clean and the staff was very helpful, but when we brought our kitten home the next day he had an eye infection, started sneezing, and had worms. We had signed a paper saying that when we left with the kitten we were now responsible for its medical bills. I totally understand why they do that but the very next day? Anyway, we love our kitten, I should have just asked more questions about what health services they had given the kitten before we took it home.
I adopted my dog from this facility about 6 months ago and it was the best decision ever. The staff was very, very helpful and patient as I asked all my questions, and they were informative and thorough throughout the adoption process. The facility is clean and welcoming and you can tell that the animals that they shelter are well taken care of. What primarily drew me to this establishment was that they are a no kill shelter. I highly recommend that if youre looking to adopt, go there!
I haven’t adopted yet, but I did visit today to possibly add a new family member (cat) to my home. I’ve never seen such a clean, family friendly place. Well organized, I do admit they do need a bit more volunteer help but other than that the staff there is very friendly and helpful plan to surprise my girls soon! 👍🏻🐈
I adopted 2 beautiful 2 and 3 year old cats toby and charlie on nov ,2016 unfortunately 3 months after adopting my cat charlie was hit by a car around the corner on March 15 2017 toby was hit in my neighborhood in front of my house , I love my pets with all my heart , but I was rejected to adopt because they told me they were setting up their pets to get killed , how do you think that makes me feel , f-ing horrible
Its a nice modern facility but the employees are seriously under trained. None of the. Could answer basic questions regarding basic animal care, behavior training, or enrichment training. Ive worked for the Houston SPCA and the SPCA of Texas in Dallas and feel management needs to find a way to provide adequate training.
So I dont have much experience with this place other then the recent acquaintance made with their Catch, Neuter/Spay, Release policy and a another time where I learned that they dont take in animals that you want to donate for adoption. I travel to and from the RGV because of family and took in a kitten last year from a family that was giving the litter away. I had mentioned to a friend that I was specifically looking for a orange cat, she showed me pics of the litter and made the introduction to the family. When I saw him in person I just knew I had to have him, Ive had Conway since he was 3 WEEKS OLD and raised him as a indoor/outdoor cat. I used to take him for walks and trained him on recognizing his nickname and certain commands. My intention was to breed him when the time allowed but because I travel back and forth to the area I left him with my mother but shes older and doesnt take to cats so easily. Shes a dog person, weve had a few dogs and cats growing up but due to moves, have had to give them up. When I left last year for about 8 months, Conway got out and was lost the entire time I was gone but when I came back this year I managed to find him on one of my drives through the neighborhood because he STILL remembered his nickname and came on call. It was a incredible moment and I was so happy to find him. Now, Ive recently left again but had someone, who actually works at Palm Valley assisting my mother with him while Im gone so I dont lose him again. (Found them through the pet service ROVER) Ive been gone for a little over a month now and got a call from this place, this past week (beginning of October) stating they have my cat, I GOT HIM CHIPPED before I left this time around so if he did get out again I would get him back. They didnt leave a message when they called Wednesday but left a message on Thursday. I didnt check my messages til Saturday and usually dont check the same day because I rarely get calls and when I do get calls its from telemarketers that leave messages. When I heard the message from Sarah, I immediately called because it stated they were PROBABLY going to neuter him on Friday. WHY WOULD THEY EVEN CONSIDER THAT WITH A PET THAT CLEARLY HAD A OWNER??? I was already a day late and desperately hoping they hadnt neutered him. I called but got no answer but was instructed to leave a message, email, or reply by text message. Email and text message were the fastest response times, so I texted but didnt get a response til hours later. I was too late. They neutered him. My issues with this place is that if they had any GENUINE RESPECT or COURTESY for the pets and owners that have taken the proper measures to have their pets CHIPPED AND COLLARED, they should also make an effort to TEXT us as well if they are to perform a LIFE ALTERING, INVASIVE SURGICAL PROCEDURE. I TEXTED THEM to get a faster response, THEY COULDVE DONE THE SAME TO REACH ME! Now all the hopes I had for him are ruined! PHCK this place and their LACK OF RESPECT and professionalism! And as mentioned earlier, this place DOES NOT TAKE IN PETS THAT YOU WANT TO DONATE FOR ADOPTION. I know this because when I first got Conway and was leaving the area I had stopped in to see if they offer that service. They dont! And the girl I had spoken to at the time was very condescending and dismissive about it even though I had offered to get Conway all his proper vaccinations. Hes in the database of Wellness on Wheelz and Pet Dr. 911 UPDATE 11/30/20: Ive recently come back in town and the 1st day back, Conway was close by but now with one of his ears clipped too! Turned my beloved Conway into everybodys cat. SINCE 3 WEEKS OLD I HAD HIM, BOTTLE FED HIM AND ALSO BEGAN TRAINING HIM AT THE SAME TIME TOO! SERIOUSLY PHCK THIS PLACE! THEY HAD NO RESPECT OR COURTESY FOR ME OR MY CAT!
Hi yes do you take animals? I have 5 kittens who were left behind since there money had passed away and I don’t know what to do with them. They need some medical attention since 4 of the 5 have eye infections. Can you take them into your care or do you know somewhere o can take them?
I found a kitten several months ago with a diseased eye, I didnt have money to take him to the vet so I left him in PVAS and even though they treated the kittens eye they left him on the streets again !! I dont understand why they didnt put him up for adoption, and this was long before they had many animals like they have right now, they even left him outside my apartments and didnt even knock on my door to leave him with me, they just threw him into the street and I NEVER found the kitten, I was looking for him for almost 1 month day and night and I never found him again I make them responsible for what happened to that poor cat, please if you find animals on the street, DO NOT TAKE THEM HERE especially to the cats because they leave them on the streets again and that even they can confirm
I adopted a puppy from here for my son. She got very sick about 2 days later. Took her to the vet and the told us she had parvo and has had it for a while. By the end of the week she had passed away. I have had 2 other bad instances with this place in the past so no i do not recommend adopting from here. They do not care for their animals.
Loved the our adoption specialist Alessandra! She gave us tons of information about our new pup Mikey! She also didnt pressure us into any decision and the gentleman upfront at the desk was also very patient with my questions! Overall a fabulous place to please ADOPT, DONT Shop! :)
I went to drop off a stray dog I found. I was handed a brochure and told I had to call the number on back to set up an appointment to drop him off. Called number in and got message voice-mail box is full and cannot receive more messages. Went online and filled out a surrender Google form. Someone should call in 24-48 hours. Called main office back to tell them about full voice mailbox. She said they know but are so overwhelmed and cant keep up. 😪 Very disappointing.
We were visiting family in town and we decided to go to the shelter to look. We came across a doggo similar to the one we have at home (AUSTIN 5 hr drive) I wanted to put her on hold because 1. She wasn’t spayed and 2. She didn’t have her rabies shot, but mostly because I wanted to do a meet and geeet with my current dog because my dog doesn’t get along with most dogs. They said no that they go fast that if I wanted to take her I should today they also showed me a list of dogs they were taking to get euthanized because they have been there a while(not sure how long as a while is to them) anyway I took her because I panicked they said she was potty trained and behaved good. As we drove her home she started coughing and snorting and when she got home we discovered she had worms in her stool. Which was concerning because she wasn’t potty trained and she did have accindets and could potentially get our current dog sick. After a week of no sleep due to her crying and after several furniture chewed we decided we couldn’t have 2 dogs in our small apartment and her snorting was only getting worse. We took her back and I get a call that she was sick and that she got other dogs sick at the shelter that the was gonna get euthanized. I never got my money back I paid to give her back but she was never really looked at by the vet before being out up for adoption. She was dirty off the street and her stool was infested with tapeworms. When they called they couldn’t even tell me what was wrong with her because most likely she still isn’t getting checked by a vet. Now I have to take my dog to the vet to see if he is at risk with whatever she had to begin with. I’m so upset that she wasn’t and isn’t being treated properly and accordingly. And that they run a shelter like this.
I preregistered as requested. Although the employees and volunteers were very accommodating, they lacked organization and control of the process. There was much confusion in trying to figure out where to go. The staff needs to review the process used by the facility on hackberry in McAllen.
They were hosting a vaccine day on oct 26 2019 from 8-11 am . Waited in line for about 35mins it was 9:06 an a officer comes to our vehicle says they ran out . How?? If they started the vaccine at 8 am. Ending the vaccine clinic at 11am. . This is very disrespectful to the community, the pets that are nerve racked to be waiting in cars. People that took the day off like myself to make this happen for my pets. Cant believe this is how this turned out.
They saved my 4 year old Shih-tzu .He needed to be operated and no vet would help unless I would pay them 7 to 8 hundred dollars. I’m unemployed cuz the covid 19 but I haven’t gotten a response back from the unemployment . I couldn’t afford his surgery. Thanks to Palm valley they were able to do the emergency surgery he needed and is able to recover. If it weren’t for Palm valley my dog would still be in pain and probably dead by now . Thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts . God Bless and continue to do an awesome job for the people and pets in our community.
Lillian and all the staff at the Andrews Center was very helpful andResponsive......They took extra time to answer all my questions andmatched me up with an Awesome Cat. Bubbles I highly recommend this place they are very Helpful and the entire processes of Adoption of a cat was very easy and fast.... Keep up the great work....Thanks Agian Shane
My wife and I adopted our shepherd-mix from PAWS about four months ago and couldnt be happy. For the price of adoption ($100 or less) you get hundreds of dollars in services including sterilization, vaccinations, and a dog with a (mostly) clean bill of health. Our boy did have some minor issues but nothing that a good diet wont fix. You also receive a coupon book for a few free or discounted items from HEB and Petco. If you are looking for a dog and dont need a specific breed, please adopt and dont shop.
I recently adopted a puppy less than a week ago and it has parvo. Went to vet and he told me to tell the shelter because they tested her and she still had got in the shelter. I did and they didnt really care. I was alittle upset because i wasnt they only one who adopted a pup that day and now they all might have parvo and all those puppies might die. For a animal shelter who states they dont believe in killing they sure dont care of about those poor animals and informing the people they really didnt test them correctly.
Terrible they had the wellness clinic on 10/26/19 got there since 8:00 am we waited for 3 hours and when i was almost at the front the police told me theres is no more vaccines. Why made everybody wait for hours just to tell you that they run out of everythin? And the officcer was very rude!!!very bad service , no organization at all!!!! Next time you guys have a wellnes clinic have enough vaccines so you dont have to make people wait for HOURS for nothing Terrible , iam very upset !!! They are not prepare to have this type of events !!!! Dont do it anymore. Bunch of loosers.
Friendly staff. Ive adopted 3 pets from them and I couldnt be happier. Although this morning Libby our newest addition. Got her a week ago, this morning I woke up with one show ... She ate the other one last night lol. Ive ALWAYS adopted. Never bought. Be a hero and save a life.
Ive never been yelled at by two people at an animal shelter for just walking into the wrong doors and turning right at the enterance. There was no sign stating no entry. My daughter and I are in mourning and were there to get another dog to love another 14 years after our beloved pug passed away and we saw two beautiful little chihuahua dogs inside a patio.. I was in the mind of adopting them right there and then, but instead these two angry girls rushed in and yelled at me that the room was for their employees to walk into. I looked around looking for a sign for employees only and there wasnt any- just a door leading into a patio. I just let them know nicely to keep the door locked then to prevent this from happening again...My daughter and I felt so unwelcome there. We looked a little more and found another two dogs to give a beautiful home to, but I didnt want even try to talk to these girls in the front area for an application of adoption and go through the adoption process with them after that ugly uncomfortable situation. I wasnt even greeted... I was yelled at.
Giving no star is not an option. Went to drop off my cat 6mo. old, Im currently pregnant and couldnt get her and my 8yr old cat to get along. I cant have the fighting around my newborn...They do not take pets at the facility they advise you to go to Palm Valley on Trenton. Trusting everything would be ok since this is a no kill shelter we did just that. I called a week later to check on her at Palm Valley only to be told my sweet girl was put down. So they may not be a no kill shelter themselves but they do partner with kill shelters and only take adoptable pets. My kitten was extremely loving towards humans but didnt get along with other cats and her life was taken for no good reason. She needed a home where she was a single pet may her soul RIP.
Friendly at the front desk, however, the volunteers or whoever were at the adult cat girl section were being snobby, rude to my children and me. It seems like they didn’t want us petting the cats, I am a cat owner and my children know how to treat a cat; treated us as if we were ignorant. I was looking to adopt but couldn’t have a connection with a cat when they kept reprimanding us. Very bad attitude from their part.
DO NOT go in this place expecting them to treat you with courtesy and and respect because you are absolutely not going to get it from the blonde lady in the front. Yeasteday me and my daughter went with a filled application to adopt a dog at 5:00pm and the blonde lady told us since we have a dog already we had to bring him in for a meet and great with the new dog. All while then explaining this the blonde lady kept talking to us like if we didn’t deserve this dog, but I was putting out of my mind because my daughter really wanted this dog. So today at 2:00 we bring our dog in for the meet and greet just to have her say “because you didn’t bring your dog in at 11:00 when we open i put that dog on a 24 hour hold for someone else”. They didn’t bother to call me and let me know to be there exactly at 11( if they did I would have been there at 11) and after that the lady would just idnore evrything I said and kept repeating “I don’t make the rules”. Why wasn’t I given that same 24 hour courtesy? If I could give no stars I would for how awful the workers are
Went in just to look at the dogs and cats and fell in love with this all white female pitbull/terrier...Ended up adopting her and taking her home and she has been spoiled rotten since... Shes an inside dog and has been nothing but love and joy to the fam... We Love her and she Loves us and she is everything and more than expected... Definitely a Great guard, weve had her a year now and we are now ready for a second and plan on going back to PAWS to adopt another, today if possible...
Wasnt around when needed ..should be open longer hrs..There were animals in need and paws was closed so i had to call humain society that i found out had ONE review that said that they kill ..what is the point of paws if they arent there to help the animals ..there are all these comments of u guys being great help but ur not.

2022-02-22Always nice team, they have a great little shop inside if you need to buy some supplies; the funds go right back to the shelter. Seriously, I love that there are rooms inside and outside if you want to try to bond with the dogs. Definitely recommend this place!

2022-03-26Full time worker, no dog in my life for over 30 years, decide to adopt neighbors 10 week old female black lab, other neighbor brings over 10 week old terrier and asks if I could take her off his hands, sure, month later another neighbors dog winds up in my backyard, I ask about him (10 week old blue heeler), says can you feed him, I lost my job. So, 3 puppies, 40 hours of work per week, Im single dad, Palm Valley hosts free vaccine clinic on Friday, Sat, Sun. I cant make weekend cuz of work so I am happy to show up at 5 pm on Friday to get my new adoptees some TLC, Friday vaccines advertised for 4 to 7 pm at edinburg Park, 1st come first serve, I arrive tired from work with 3 puppies in an non Air Con car and are asked to wait in a line of dozens of other cars stretched throughout the park, cops there keeping order, waiting, sweating, but happy my girls and boy will get shots, waiting, no AC, tired from work, but waiting, black leather seats make the inside very hot, Windows rolled down, breeze feels good, line moves slowly for 30 minutes, then, police block off entrance, no more cars, go home and come back tomorrow, its 5:30 and they are out of shots, I cant go on the weekend, work requires me. Unhappy dad of 3 adopted puppies. Will they die from no shots? Just more worries for a father to shoulder. Bad review cuz u gave me hope, then you took it away.

2021-01-11Clean bathrooms, for anyone curious. Handicap accessible, plenty of space for strollers, wheelchairs, COVID concern. They have wee tables and chairs for those concerned for needing to be able to sit and rest for whatever reason. Books for kids to enjoy! A nice outting actually. Very clean and superb quality of a facility, modern! Not heart squashing going into as compared to walking into other animal shelters where it seems very prison like, poor-ish quality. You can notice much love from donors have helped. They provide optimal care, you can notice!

2018-12-08We adopted a cat named Kirby and a dog named Sol (now Luna) from here. It was a great experience, and we couldnt be happier. Everybody was really friendly and helpful. The process was easy and we received a lot of information. They really care, and it shows. Highly recommend going here if you choose to adopt.

2022-02-15I adopted both my dogs from here at two separatetimes. Both came with deformed and their shots and neutering. I see people post about the unsanitary conditions but what would you expect? RGV citizens need to step it up with caring for their animals. PVAS employees all seem caring for these animals and have been a huge help when adopting both my pets.

2020-04-15I adopted Gianni (now Samba) on February 23, 2020, who was then 7 months old. This place is amazing and the employees are very nice. This shelter is very very clean. I just couldnt believe how much it cost for the dog and for the sterilization. My dog was microchipped, sterilized, had her shots, had received Heartgard & Nexgard. She is such a good little dog. She is very intelligent and she gets along well with my other dog. Thank you so much ! Keep up your good work !

2021-12-26Very unsanitary and unprofessional, whom don’t understand a pets living. The conditions are devastating and wouldn’t wish this type of environment to any animal. Just entering the place is unpleasant, the type of smell is comparable to the unpleasant treatment and attention they pay to the animals. The workers are rude and are not friendly at all, the judgment is harsh and wouldn’t recommend this serves to anyone.

2021-04-02My family came to the center looking to adopt a dog. We met a beautiful Boxer/Pitbull mix adult dog. One of the staff members took her outside for some interaction time with her. She melted our hearts instantly. The adoption process was quick and easy. LaLa was already spayed and up to date wirh her vaccines. We thank all the staff members that care for the animals at the center. We are so happy to have LaLa be part of our family and be able to give her a forever home.

2018-08-19Today I visited this place, and it was super !! the building has a very large parking lot, the employees are very attentive and helpful, the dogs and cats are very clean and very well eaten and healthy.
