Porters in other cities:
Great local grocery store. Friendly staff and a huge variety of products. Great meat department and their fried chicken is a family favorite. Prices are somewhat higher compared to other food stores in different areas, but I think because Alpine is a more remote location, transportation costs are passed down to customers.
First time shopping there had a great experience they had EVERYTHING I was looking for. Nice friendly employees I will be going back. I live 50 miles one way from this store and they are the only store anywhere close to me that sells the wine I drink.Theres another Porters closer to me in FT Davis I love that store to but the one in Alpine Texas is a lot bigger.
These folks have pretty much a monopoly on the grocery store business in Alpine, TX. But all the people i have dealt with here have been nice and friendly and willing to show you where to find what you are looking for. They have pretty much whatever you need. Their prices are slightly higher than in the big cities, but that is to be expected. In general, my experience with this store has been very positive. Oh yes, they do have 1 or 2 electric handicapped carts.
This is a normal small town supermarket. better selection than I expected. Prices definitely higher than big city but not resort gouging. Good selection of fruits and vegetables as well as beer and wine. There are two locations of same market in town and they see. To have monopoly. If not happy, there is fort Davis or fort Stockton, latter an hour away.
Always ready to help, cashiers are always glad to see you with a greeting and smile. The only issue I had was that yesterday my grocery bags were overfilled and when I got home and took the bags out of the car, some of the bags ripped right open and I had groceries all over the garage floor. The store and bathroom are kept clean and tidy, along with the car park.
(Warning: Young adults from Central Florida in for a vacation) When there’s really only two grocery stores in town… both the same brand… it doesn’t pay to be picky. We were MOSTLY SEEKING SIMPLE-TO-COOK MEALS, SNACKS, AND DRINKS… and Porter’s definitely covered all that. If you had allergies and wanted something pre-packed- they had that too. They had a decent selection of fresh produce (mostly missing anything exotic) as well as cuts of meat. An added plus was a surprisingly big wine collection as well as local craft beer. PRICES WERE SLIGHTLY HIGHER than I was used to but not a deal breaker.
Porters is the primary option for groceries in Alpine, and both of the stores are good. Their selection is surprisingly robust for a small town grocer and the gluten free offerings, in particular, are impressive. Prices are about 1/3 higher than those at big-city grocers by my estimation. Blue Water Natural Foods is the other grocery option in town.
1. Almost every item is overpriced by at least a dollar2. Many items are expired or close to expirationForget trying to eat healthy, fresh foods, especially if youre on a budget. If youre lucky to find enough fresh, appetizing whole foods that wont spoil in a day or three, and youre willing to pay a lot for it, then you still have to deal with the extremely limited selection; dont think youre going to be able to mix it up from week to week. This is no Whole Foods...Frozen & boxed is the name of the game here.3. Produce quality is abysmal; you wont find Grade A or No. 1 produce (think supermarkets like Publix, Stew Leonards, Wegmans or even United) but youll certainly pay much higher prices. The same produce will remain on display for a month while the original blemishes, damages & other unappealing abnormalities fester into further decay & spoilage. (Also, forget about trying to make any recipe that calls for any specialty ingredient--including fresh basil, crimini mushrooms, fingerling potatoes...)4. Meat selection is abysmal; again, dont expect to find a large selection and variety of Prime or even Choice. The meat Porters sells is flavorless, tough, and overpriced, which is really astonishing since Alpine is sort of a cowboy town. Youd think these real Texans wouldnt settle for anything but the best, and youd be sadly mistaken.5. (Most) Teenage employees are clearly there for a paycheck only (that is, when theyre actually there and not just punching the time clock and then having a friend come pick them up so they can go have fun elsewhere). Also, when they are actually in the store, they are often found hiding in the aisles or horse playing. They walk around with their earbuds in and/or texting on their phones. They certainly cant see/hear anyone who might want to get their attention. They expect you to move out of their way when they come down the aisle with one of those wide brooms without even an excuse me or thank you. (Again, have an above-mentioned supermarket experience & see how those teenagers behave; night & day...Theyre generally astute, helpful, professional, and socially and emotionally well-adjusted. Youre not going to find that here.)6. Cashiers (oftentimes teenagers too), are lethargic & unimpressive. They move at a sloths pace and are void of any personality. Youre lucky (or rather unlucky as it may be) if they even speak to you or actually hand you your bags. Again, compare your shopping experience here to one at another quality grocery store & you will immediately and unequivocally see & feel the difference.

2022-03-19Staff is nice enough. Prices are approximately 30% across the board higher than anywhere in Texas. They have a monopoly. Unless you have Amazon.Also- their meat selection weights dont match their sales receipts to the packaging weights.

2022-06-24Service has really gone down since putting in the self check out lines. Bought 2 cases I water. Walked out the door with them while the cashier and sacket chatted with no offer to help. Hate to see the store heading in the direction of the next walmart. 😒

2022-01-30Surprisingly good selection of food, beverages, and other items from such a small store. I was not expecting to see such a diverse selection of imported beers/ales, microbrews and wine. Decent prices too.

2021-03-18The young people there are very nice and helpful. The price gouging is another story. I can run to Walmart and buy a gallon of water for 94¢.Bought some flat bread yesterday, opened come to find mold, since I didnt get my receipt...

2020-12-29I have, on several occasions had to return products for mold issues. I bought this item just a couple of days prior to opening it . It’s suppose to be apple sauce . I have called before to make complaints on other items including bread for sale that is only good for maybe 4 days .... cheese with mold in between the wrappers and I’ve gotten sick in the past from eating the food here . There is a problem at this store and it gets brushed off . The staff returned my money but when I spoke to the district manager awhile back , they said I didn’t cook my food correctly . Well, how many times do I have to return food so you know there is a problem at this store ? Telling me I must not have cooked my food correctly is an easy blame game . Pretty tired of it.This particular item was labeled as having an expiration date yr . 2022I have spoken to the bread truck driver while he made deliveries and he showed me that the bread he delivers is good for over two weeks at time of delivery. When you go to the bread section, most of the bread has an expirations date for under a week. Sometimes only a day until expiration and other times the bread is expired by a few days . I hope the management gets in contact with me . The prices that we pay (way to expensive) , we should be getting fresh food . I shouldn’t have to worry about opening a new product labeled expired in over a year and I find mold under the lid .
