Our first time at Railway Cafe and I must say we are adding it to our Return List. The cup of pinto beans w/fresh made chips and grilled cheese were tasty and fulfilling. The Turkey BLT with toasted sourdough bread was excellent as were the sweet potato fries. Our server was very attentive and helpful and made us feel very welcome as new customers. We saw plates and plates of food going past us and ALL of it looked fantastic! I was also impressed that they use and support local farmers and markets! BONUS! Well be back soon!
I travel quite a bit for work, but if I know Im headed to anywhere near Athens I structure it to bring me here right at 11. I love this place. The food is always good and occasionally experimental. The service is always pleasant and prompt with the owner personally seeing to the front house.I will always personally recommend the paprika fettuccini extra spicy. Its unique and wonderful.
First time my husband and I had the privilege of stopping at this quaint town and eating at the Railway Cafe. A perfect gem restaurant. The food is not only delicious but the menu items and daily specials are unique and perfect reflection of this quaint cafe. The service is phenomenal.A must stop if even close to Athens, TX
Only open from 11-2pm. We waited a few minutes but it was so worth it. It is small a bit dark inside but cool and the atmosphere was cheerful. The staff was excellent and friendly. The food was top notch. The menu is small but because of that it was all light, bright, and very fresh.
My first time to try out the cafe and the food was good and I’ll be going back for the pimiento and cheese. My mother is a regular at cafe and some cookies were sent out for her. They were the best I’ve had, I got a half dozen to take with me and after my husband tried them he wanted to know why I didn’t get more.
This was our first visit and we were very happily surprised. Service was great from the minute we walked in, seated quickly, nice casual environment. Server was right there for our drink order & to explain daily specials. Gave us plenty of time to decide what we wanted with no rush. Food came out quickly, was correct and very good. Looking forward to going back soon. Would not hesitate to recommend.
The restaurant is amazing the food is great the hamburger pimento cheese and peanut butter is a true treat. My daughter had the Mahi-mahi oh Man! Do you want a great place to take someone to introduce him to East Texas this is the place.hidden right in the middle of Athens Texas
Plus- Great food and service. Negatives- Menu print was very tiny. It was extremely dim. Tables were to close to each other. Like a foot apart. Next table over was like they were sitting at my table. So really no privacy to have a quiet conversation. I loved the food, but probably would not eat there again, as I was not comfortable.
The staff are just so amazing. The Boswells(owners) are great. The food is so good and healthy that I crave it daily. And the atmosphere, dont get me started! My family and I just love this place and as long as they are open for business they have our support. Perfection at its finest! :) Love you guys!
This is the best place for great food. Always excellent service. Food is always fresh not from a can or package. The Lemon Chess pie is the best I have ever had. Place is cozy. Clean and staff is friendly and all have been there a long time. Want to impress your friends take them to the Railway Cafe, unique and soooo good.
I have been wanting to try Railway Cafe for some time now. There hours of operation are hard to fit into my schedule. I finally made it over the past weekend and was glad I did. The menu section is wonderful and the food is well prepared and plated. The food was tasty, fresh and served with a smile. The staff are well trained and very observant. It will be returning for sure.
I did not know what to expect in this small town, but the food, service and atmosphere were great.I am going back today and will take some family from out of town to experience this place. They will seat you at the table with other people if needed, but will do their best to have space between so it doesnt seem so uncomfortable. All I can say is great menu and awesome food.
Ate there for the 1st time on 10/16/2019. Went there to have the creme brulee... ended up trying couple of the appetizers as well. Had the Mac -n- cheese and the potato soup. Both were very tasty. Then the Creme Brulee - very delicious. Then had the Mexican ice cream which came with a cookie. Not sure which dessert I liked better... both were mouthwatering! Our waitress was Raylie - one of the best waitresses we have ever had. Period. Service was 1st rate, the food was great and she was so sweet and personable, felt so welcome. Cant wait to eat and try some of more of their food.
I highly recommend. Food was excellent, came out super fast and the staff was wonderful. The owner/wife came out and personally thanked us for coming in. We were a group of seven and everyone loved it. Reservations are recommended thiugh as they are only open for a short time.
When traveling through Athens, we often stop at this great little lunch bistro. The food is always good but the restaurant is a bit dark and often crowded. They put their two tops side by side down a long wall so if you are a couple that needs a lot of personal space, this isnt the restaurant for you (plus one of you gets to look at a wall). Last time we visited, the kitchen was slow getting the food out and my sister Cobb Salad was not what she expected. It was missing most of the ingredients that make a Cobb Salad a Cobb Salad. My chicken wrap was very good with a tasy poblano sauce. The portions are generous and the servers attentive. This place is only open for lunch M-F, no diner or weekend hours which is a bit quirky.
Read the reviews and convinced the hubby to try something different. Specials were bean soup and ham and cheese sandwich. Bean soup was the best we ever had. 4 hours later we are still raving about it and wishing we had ordered a quart to go. Ham and cheese was excellent as was the chicken quesadia. Wait staff was friendly and attentive. Prices were appropriate. Decore was uniquely Texan.
Im withholding a star for their hours of operation that clearly cater to the old and retired. Their food is top notch, however if you order a sandwich make sure to request both buns. I only received one and after asking my waiter for my extra bun he informed me that an open face sandwich is the default.
Love the Railway Café! The food is prepared fresh daily by the owner/chef and is always cooked to perfection. They use fresh, quality ingredients. Great service. Always an upbeat and friendly atmosphere in a charming restored location just off the square in Athens. I highly recommend this restaurant.
This is the Best Restaurant in all of Texas. The owners created a really exciting, yet simple menu. The chicken salad is phenomenal. The tomato soup with grilled cheese will make you forget all your worries. When in Athens...stop in the Railway Cafe. Youre welcome. Cheers. -AX-
This is the best place to eat in Athens. I think its only opened for lunch Monday thru Friday. The chef owner worked in high end restaurants in Dallas, decided to move to small town to have more time with family. Got the portobello mushroom sandwich which was fantastic, grandson got the mac n cheese which he said was the best he ever had!
Sorely disappointed with this place, we walk in at lunch, there were several empty tables, we had a person who had her leg in a cast & asked instead of making us stand and wait to be seated if she could sit, when we asked why we couldn’t be seated we were told they needed to give the servers and the cook time to “catch up”. Wile she was sitting we joined her at the table, we were looking at menus we did not ask for anything and a man walked up & asked “what are your plans, to sit yourself?” We explained the leg and her need to sit.... he said he would get In trouble, needless to say we walked out and will NEVER return & will advise people to eat elsewhere.
A gem in Athens! Athens is a charming , busy county seat in east Texas. Off the square is the reailroad cafe. The menu is a nice one. Good foods made right. The Cobb salad was fresh and very delicious. You can order chicken extra for a nominal fee, however the crispy bacon was more than adequate. My friend had the tomato basil soup woth a grilled cheese. He absolutely loved It.The desserts were nicely platedand homemade and seasonal. The menu includes burgers, sandwiches, salads and entrees. Prices are very good!!! Its a winner!!
Railway Cafe is the best place for upscale lunch in Athens, Texas. They have a variety of options on the menu and attentive staff. The atmosphere is a little loud from the concrete floor and brick walls, but after a few minutes, you wont even notice. The menu has everything from quesadillas, sandwiches, burgers, salads, soups to a daily fish and other specials. Dessert is a treat that, if you can muster the space or take it home, will make you smile like a child! Creme brulee comes to mind....Just a recommendation...because of its popularity, arrive early or later to avoid the lunch rush.
When youre tired of BBQ and burgers for lunch, this is the culinary jewel of Athens.Creative soups always please the palate, and I have yet to find ANYones chicken salad in Austin, Tyler and Dallas that could measure up to Railways freshness and flavor. Both carnivore and vegan can dine here together in harmony. Save room for the lemon chess pie with berries!Attentive service - a comfortable zone for everyone - from suits to boots (even overalls). VERY small town friendly, and always packed for lunch.
My exsperience was great and it was also,a place to go its a place that those of us who would consider it a place of hidden treasure. The food and the way they treat you and serve your afternoon lunch or snack it reminds me about Bos place on Mc Kinney Bulevard in Dallas,Texas which used to be down where the hippies used to meet in the 70s down on Oak Lawn and Cedar Springs those times are long gone just like the Viet Nam era and the rock and roll bands that really meant something and said something to the times or should i say our inviourment sorry about my spelling i skipped school a little to much when they were teaching spelling classes. The thing is i truly believe the Railway Cafe deserves to be recondniced and i choose to bring it to facebook and anouce it to be known as a class A act and give it all the bells and whistles8

2022-04-20First visit to Railway, and not sure if we will be back. We both ordered the Pimento Bacon Burgers, and both ordered medium rare, but always cooked well done. Neither had a good taste or presentation of plates. Spending $45.00 dollars for lunch and we could have dined at Scott’s Crossing, and received a better burger!

2022-04-15We’ve been eating here since they opened. . Always good, great prices, friendly staff, and worth the wait if there is one. Yes, it’s busy and you might wait, because it’s the best place around.

2021-03-23This was the 1st time trying Railway Cafe as we had gone to Athens for filing documents at courthouse. My husband is an attorney and suggested I join him for a beautiful drive. He had decided this would be a wonderful lunch place for us to try! Was he ever RIGHT!! Best Roasted Tomatoe Basil soup and Petit Grilled cheese EVER!! Such robust, mouth watering taste that hit the spot on the cool day! My husband chose Chicken Salad Sandwich with chips and he was smiling, so I know he loved it too. For dessert we had the most decadent creme brule, I believe we have ever tasted! This dessert was creamy, cooked to perfection, dusted with a morsel of cinnamon to compliment the Mexican Vanilla in this outstanding dessert. Fresh blue berries and sliced strawberries topped the thin shell of brown sugar browned to a crisp layer.Staff were helpful, kind and attentive to keeping his tea glass filled as well as his water, this is huge for us.Establishment was very clean, the atmosphere was all the other restaurants should strive to be, enjoyable....not rushed. BUT get there early! People flock to this restaurant! Standing room only as we exited.Prices were well below what the magnificent quality of food and amount you get should be.Seriously cannot wait to go back!Compliments to the chef, as his wife/partner came over and conversed with us for a bit. She was ecstatic that we were bragging on all of his delicious talent with preparing all of our lunch for that day. They are a must see in Athens, Tx.

2022-07-19Food is fantastic. But would not have driven from Mabank to eat if l had known they were closed for summer break. Google and other places said they were open.

2019-07-23Black eye pea hummus is really good. Mac & cheese with steak was good. The brownie is amazing. Great service and reasonable prices. Their accommodation of my wifes allegies were excellent and they made her something modified from the menu. Ingredients are known to the staff which helps a lot. Very simple look to the menu and restaurant is deceiving - great place.
