We use to go to get burgers back when I was a little girl with my mom and siblings, many many moons ago. I remember the Rutledges very clearly where the burgers were .25 cents along with a bag of potato chips. Those were the days. When I come visit Brownsville, I never fail coming for a Rutledge burger. This brings many childhood memories. Its not the same without the Rutledges but I will drop by when I am in my hometown of Browntown Brownsville.
Burgers are a bit underserved regarding the patty size but they are very tasty. My husband loves them...unfortunately the WORKERS ARE ARROGANT and almost always mess up something in my order and they act like they dont care. Worst experience than any diner Ive ever been to.
Im from out of town and and I go out of my way to go to this place because its so unique and the hamburger are delicious 😋 yesterday was my first time back there in 2 years. Thanks God the Burgers were still Good. Unfortunately the waitress looked like she had swallowed a 🍋 lemon and was very rude. I didnt let her attitude rune my Burger. But will think about it twice before I go there next time Im in town.
I tried this place 4 years ago, hearing nothing but great things, that its a local favorite, and that they are the best burgers in town. Thinking that they must be good I tried them, and was disappointed.Today I tried them again. The cooking smelled great, the order was fast, but the quality as poor as ever.Any taste that the meat has is drowned by mustard, and American cheese. The meat I could bite into was charred beyond enjoyment.I would not recommend this place. $1.50 for a single cheese burger, and around $4 for a triple meat. Both undersized in my opinion.
Burgers taste great! You need to order the double meat, the regulars burger patties are really thin, theres a limited variety of ways to order your burger. Canned drink and chips are separate. The fad about this place is the fact that its a historical mark. The family began this mom&pop burger joint between two buildings...the location was an ally and family just built around it...if your closterphobic you might want to just get your order to go. If you can use a snack...this is the perfect place for a tasty burger and a piece of Brownsville history.
Dont waste your time trying to find a parking space practically across the street from the Mexican border. This renovated ally is about 6 ft. wide. The tables , for 2, are built into the walls. The waitress speaks so little English, it is best to just point at the menu. It is a poor knock off of an In and out burger, canned drinks , chips....no fries.
Delicious burgers, small but filling. A favorite of locals and understably so! Make sure you have cash on you. They do not accept credit or debit. Additionally, if you want fries you are out of luck as they only have chips. But the burgers are well worth it. Definitely a go to spot!
Went to eat lunch with my daughter and the burgers were great but beware the lady charged me $19 and that was quite a bit for what I ordered and so I got up to check the prices and she was like way off it was like $14. I let her know and she said that the prices that are posted are not the prices which I really doubt that. She gave me $2 back so I would just leave..... when I asked her to see my receipt it was charged as the price that is in the sign. WTH!!!! That is no way to do business or to collect her own tip??
We had a chance to try Rutledge hamburger for the first time. A unique place, for sure. Hamburger was good, I had 2 double meat cheeseburger. My girl had a single meat hamburger. Plus 2 soft drinks, all for just over $10. The price is right on point. I recommend Rutledge hamburger.Parking is limited.
The Honest Review: Let me clear up the confusion for our traveling guests, the burgers are small, with a thin patty to boot, with a splash of mustard and a pinch of lettuce. There are no fries. all that is cooked are burgers. Grab a bag of chips and a drink to complete your meal. The burgers are simple with zero wow factor. But thats not to say its not good. Its a good small burger with a price you cant beat that starts as low as $1.15!!!Rutledge Burgers is a small family business that has been around for 94 years and has virtually never changed. Its become a part of Brownsville history locals can relate to. It still remains as small as it has always been. Its literally an unremarkable hallway, 5 feet wide. Its certainly something different worth taking pictures of... you can literally hold both walls at the same time! It still serves up the same small, thin patty burgers they have always been known for. Ill still go back for the sake of the nostalgia. Like many locals, we have a nostalgic tie to this burger joint. The meal... I would recommend to get at least 2 burgers because they are the size of small WhiteCastle Burgers. Id recommend the Cheeseburger with Ham Its a thin burger patty with a slice of grilled deli ham and cheese all for a buck 75! Get two of these, a bag of chips and a cold drink.
So happy to review this unique hamburger restaurant. It snugged between to buildings downtown Brownsville Texas. Anyone visiting Brownsville or from the Rio grande valley that has not been should go there. The menu is only hamburgers and require at least a double. They are delicious. Go there now
To be warned, the restaurant is really an alley way with tables for two crammed along the length of it. Don’t take a purse with you for there will be nowhere to place it while you eat with a friend. No fries. Just bags of chips. Whoever heard of burgers without fries? Anyway, get the double because half your patty will remain on the grill with the cook.
I didnt officially visit this place today. I am traveling from California. But I used to go here as a kid for lunch when I was at Immaculate Conception. I remember Mrs Rutledge was a funny lady. Kind of looked like Lucy Da Ball. But very friendly and this join was just one of a kind. Great to see it is still open and running.
I used to come to eat with my mom👑 when I was little....When I go DOWNTOWN I cant never find the place 💖but I did this time. The place looks the same but the service is not...Im assuming the owners died and maybe they sold it to other people 😭or maybe it stayed with the family.😀..I have no idea...
I cant believe that no one realizes that the woman who attends is very filthy is always holding her face in her hair and once I went with my wife she was putting her fingers in her mouth and then she grabbed our hamburgers without washing her hands and also Grab the money and then the hamburgers that disgusting I never go again

2022-03-24Alright a very unique establishment 💯 years old, cool. Small hidden away business in Downtown. I can handle 3 burgers and we’re taking double meat double cheese. Yup made to order fresh , a jalapeño, bag of chips and a cold soda pop. Just the way I like it and have a seat in the back of my car parked in front of the burger joint. Small but great taste, fast and friendly service, fresh ingredients Great burgers 🍔 🇺🇸🤘all day long.

2021-12-16Youve heard of a hole in the wall, but have you heard of a hole between the walls!? This historic burger joint was built in 1922 in a tiny alley! Dont eat here if you claustrophobic lol or maybe just get it to go, but the burgers are quaint. You can easily eat 2 or 3 of their double cheeseburgers. But the good part about it is its very affordable! Man that bouble meat double cheese with ham burger was the most pricey and it wasnt even 4 bucks! Go here at least for the experience and for a good bite 😋

2022-06-09100 yeard old burger joint, you dont find that everyday. Loved them little burgers, patties were seasoned just right, edges were crispy, buns were firm, loved them. You have to try it when you come down to Brownsville

2022-05-06Its a small and cute antique place and I had heard so much about it but they took a very long time! I waited about 20+ minutes but thats probably because the man in front of me seemed to have a large order. (More than 5 burgers I think) Also, it was my first time here and I did not see a cashier or server to take my order so I sat for a couple minutes. When later this second person arrives and they take his order before mine. Even when the server was told by another lady, whom she was actually chatting with, that I got there first!I probably would have gotten out of there quicker if I would have placed my order first. The other server was outside talking on the phone the whole time. 😒Anyway, I got a double cheeseburger and a single. It was very inexpensive less than $5 for both. However, they were tiny! Meat was so thin and not enough flavor for me. My daughter was disappointed too. Also, they dont sell anything else except for chips and maybe drinks I think. Rating flavor only- It was good but Ive had better honestly. Please dont hate me! 🙈But maybe Ill try it again soon and give them a second chance, since its such a popular place.

2022-05-14Don’t come here for the service. Horrible customer service. They take forever to give you the food. If they say it’ll take 15 minutes, it actually means 30 minutes or more. The boigers are good though.

2021-07-24Been wanting to try it out lady did not get my order correctly since she was taking it from the register while I cant even pass the door. Flavor was good for its simple menu but I got a double meat and yet it barely covered half the bun. Feel bad for the 2 stars but I was let down. I hope they can get back on track.

2022-04-17Certainly a unique experience. Too small for me to sit in so had to take it to go. Burgers are really good too! Small but thats ok, I dont always need a huge burger and priced well enough to get 2 or more if needed.

2022-04-13This is an awesome fast cheap greasy spoon. Cash only. Limited menu. You can watch them cook and prep your burger! If you have a lot of people to feed come here.

2022-03-18Dont have pictures, because those burger never lasted more than a couple of minutes. Love those triple dobles. Youd be a fool for not going to this place for a burger if your in brownsville, unless your a vegan/vegetarian, or dont eat beef because of religious reason. These burgers are AMAZING!!!
