I am from a rural farming community, 90 miles NE of Lubbock. I enjoyed a few school field trips to this location. Always a proponent of science I majored in mechanical engineering at Texas Tech University. Now pursuing a graduate degree in physics. Mostly just exhibits of classical mechanics here. I might write procedures for including quantum and plasma physics exhibits.
Had a great time until the very rude front desk employee ruined it. We were on our way out when we stopped by the gift shop. My fiancé was checking out and my 18 month old was simply pushing a metal cart display back and forth while I held on to it and figured it wasn’t a big deal, he was entertained, wasn’t breaking anything and even the gift shop employee thought it was hilarious. Then I noticed the front desk employee (a female) walking up to me. She very rudely says, “Can you leave that alone.” I respond “oh I’m sorry we are about to leave and I was just keeping him occupied.” She then responds once again rudely “yeah just leave it alone.” So I respond “the wheels are unlocked and I thought about locking them so he can’t push it but didn’t want to mess with it because y’all have them unlocked.” She then walks off. I won’t be coming back. Obviously need to hire people with more customer service experience.
I think the price is kinda high for so many of the dispays being broken or extremely run down. While it is pretty clean it just needs some TLC to fix up a few things. Also the party room is very depressing much like a walmart breakroom. Please put some adult sized chairs along the wall so the adults can sit down comfortably.
Super fun little museum. Pretty much a large childrens museum, but lots of interesting things for adults as well (we dont have kids, but went just for something different to do.) We went on a Monday holiday so it wasnt very busy. We did not watch the IMAX movie. There are three floors of exhibits for a huge variety of interests, from sports science to model railroads to a business and economics section. There is also a designated area for smaller children. LOTS of hands-on stuff - pretty much everything. The exhibits are pretty well-kept even though they are clearly well-loved. Highlights were the full triceratops skeleton, the autokinetic sculpture (which we could have watched all day) and the live reptile/animal exhibits. There was an animal show with an African Tortoise happening while we were there. The presenter was knowledgeable and pleasant. The rest of the museum staff was pleasant as well. One note, if you go during covid: children under 10 are not required to mask, and thats a good chunk of their clientele. Exhibits were not cleaned or sanitized while we were there, and as mentioned above, are mostly hands-on. Take plenty of hand sanitizer. We used it after touching anything.
Our 7 and 10 years old kids love to spend time here. Best decision is to get the yearly membership that combines with the Omni theater shows! We really enjoyed our visits and shows. Good place for the kids to learn, enjoy and have fun. We had been to special events happening here and enjoyed being there. We would definitely recommend this place.
A must do - must see if you have children in Lubbock. Its awesome. It might have just been the day we went, but many of the exhibits were not working presumably due to a million little hands playing with them and insufficient funds for maintenance & upkeep. Nevertheless, Id still go back because we enjoyed it so much.
While the Science Spectrum is known as an attraction for kids of all ages, not everyone knows about the availability to rent out rooms for special events. We booked the Exhibit Hall for my husbands graduation party. This is a cost effective rental for anyone on a budget. They set up the tables for you, allow you to use their sound system to play music, have the ability to set up a stage for you, allow outside catering, and, the best part, is they CLEAN UP FOR YOU!!! We will definitely recommend this to family and friends. Thank you Science Spectrum for making my husbands day special and helping me keep my sanity!
Honestly very disappointing. We had heard such awesome things about this place only to go and see half of the displays were broken, missing parts, or just not in working condition. The area where they have the turtles and snakes look poorly kept. The information is pretty interesting but everything needs to be updated.
Kids and adults had fun here, we stayed for about two hours. There are 3 floors full of fun activities and displays. My son aged out of the little kids rooms but still managed to find his way back in. They have a waterway with flowing water and small plastic boats to play with. There are big plastic bibs to help protect their clothing from being soaked. The kids also enjoyed the big bubble table and all kinds of hands-on experiments. Bathroom was clean and hand sanitizer available. I left one star off because some of the exhibits were in need of repair.
Ive been going here since I was a child, its a great place and I always learn something new every time. The top floor is my favorite but the entire facility is amazing! Definitely great for anyone doing homeschool or if youre looking to learn new things while having fun.
Great variety of attractions. They catered to our two year old and the adults were also entertained. Some of the attractions were a little old/out of order and needed some maintenance. The addiction section was a strange transition because it went from dinosaurs, a rock wall, and then a whole section on addiction. It was a little overwhelming.Over all, we were pleased with the amount of things to look at and do. We couldnt cover everything in one visit, and will be returning.
0 stars for the front desk employee who offered no pleasantries, guidance for first-timers or eye contact. She made us feel as if we were intruding when we simply were there to have a good time with our children. The only time she looked up from her computer was after holding onto our tickets for a brief pause, then saying “put on your masks and I will give you the tickets” ... yay, welcome to the science spectrum! Good help is hard to find I suppose.I give 4 stars for the exhibits, price and atmosphere outside of the front desk. Fun place to take your kids, lots to see and interact with and despite our first impression with the staff, we had a great time once we got inside.
Always enjoy. So 3 stars due to last week was a bust. It took 2 hours to get grandma at 101 ready for the Canadian Rockies imax, I ran in to get tickets (on line was not working) only to be told the sound system went down and no show. Meanwhile, hervsons and grandson were getting her out of the car only to disappoint her. It the manager said he could show another show however, we were on a time limit and gm had to stay on schedule for food and meds so we could not wait. Very sad. She does not get out much, I took off work to take her. We live in Houston and Austin do this was a rare treat for her. We will try again next time we are there. Was not a good day though.
The water table in the toddler play area is so fun as well as all the fun things to do. Watch a movie or see the Butterfly exhibit etc. There is so much to do for kids. Science is so much fun and they make it interesting for everyone-handson. NEEDS BETTER MOVIES THOUGH... Same movies play for months if not a whole year. Which makes it not a place we visit often since the kids have gotten bigger.
My 8-yrs old grandson loved it but was disappointed that many things were not working. He still had a great time. A lot of caregivers turned children loose that had no manners nor regard for waiting their turn. We saw children with their matching tee shirts but did not see any adults with them until they lined them up to leave. Employees were very friendly! It was a good day!
We didnt have the oppprtunity to check out the theater portion of the museum. But the three story Science Spectrum was indeed good time. Targeted at young kids, there is few adult worthy attractions. The Talkington legacy is interesting. The aerospace and Nasa exhibits equally intrigue. The animal display is good. Everything else devolves into what feels like a elementary school field trip. My daughter enjoyed, but after one hour, everyone was ready to go. B-
I took several kids ranging from 1-7 and there was a little something for everyone. Some of the interactive exhibits were not in good order but most were great and easily accessible and understandable for kids. The live animal show was great. Parking is a bit tight so be ready for that.
Took my two year old here to see the butterfly exhibit. We also went to the under 5 area and she had a ton of fun and enjoyed herself for about two hours! Very impressed with the reasonable prices both for entry and for food/gifts. The employees were friendly and helpful and we will definitely be back!
Kinda p*ssed that we paid for a family membership well never be able to use now because they took away mask requirements. Not taking my high risk family here every again. They have no consideration for the safety of their paying members and employees. Youre a SCIENCE spectrum. Key word being SCIENCE. You should be following recommendations from the scientific community not some idiotic politician.
The Science Spectrum is a good little museum, with activities for all school age children. Nevertheless, for the size of growing Lubbock, it really should continue to expand, and it has failed to do so over the fifteen years that I have been in Lubbock. One major disappointment is that during the Covid Pandemic, it only postponed membership for three months, from March to June. We had purchased a one year membership right before the pandemic, and have since been avoiding enclosed places, especially places that has hands on activities. The pandemic continues to worsen, and Lubbock even was rated as one of the worse pandemic outbreaks in the Nation for the months of November and December. I have asked if members have the option of postponing the membership until we are comfortable to resume visiting the museum, but was told no. We paid for a family membership of $120 dollars, and only used it once before the pandemic lock-down. We feel that they have disrespected members concern for safety, and our paid membership expired, despite that fact that we have only used it once as we follow the CDC guidelines to prevent spread of the virus! Although this is a science museum, its policy during the pandemic defies science. The museum should give members the option of freezing membership until the Pandemic is under control and until members are comfortable visiting the museum on a case by case basis. For this reason, I am giving it one star.
We love taking our little one to Science Spectrum. Lots of fun activities. The experiments and talks they offer are fun. Been to a few birthday parties and it was fun for the little ones. I love the special events like Butterflies Alive and Bubble Fest. So glad we have something like this in Lubbock.
Great place to let kids interact with science. Extremely kid friendly, if they are old enough you pay for them to get in and you can sit at the snackbar tables to save money.Grandson ran around for 2 1/2 hours exploring, till he got hungry lolBest to purchase movie and museum ticket at same time. Great gift shop!
Always exciting and fun!Very informative on all things science! From bugs, to sea life, to exploring music, optical illusion, fantastic exhibits, and a large relaxing OMNI theatre.HIGHLY SUGGEST TO ANYONE NEW TO LUBBOCK, OR RESIDENTS/VISITORS.They have a picnic/food area in the lobby to eat in, 3 floors of crazy fun and educational experiences, and their gift shop has some of the coolest toys, rocks, stuffed animals and books!
Awesome place especially for kids! Coming from a big city with amazing museums I wasnt expecting much but it was very cool. Tons of hands on activities. Which was nice with a 2 year old. Only negative was a few things didnt actually work. Like the button to operate it did nothing.
Very nice on the principles of science. I love that its kid friendly and user interactive. We had ages ranging from 4-61 and everyone found something they wanted to explore. We watched the Amazon movie. The movie is geared to an older viewing audience--our 4 year old fell asleep, but the adults enjoyed it. I was very disappointed in the animal exhibits--I found them way too small, especially for the Gaiman and the turtles. I would like to see more humane (and for the fish, cleaner) habitats for the animals. Overall a nice experience.
Amazing place! Love all the events that take place here. Enjoy taking the kids, and relatives kids here to learn and play on event days and even on normal days when nothing is scheduled. This place has so much fun and interesting stuff for kids and even adults to interact with and learn about.
Kids will spend all day here if we let them. We ended up getting the annual membership because we came so often. It paid for itself in 2 months. And it gets you into science museums all across the country. Some of which are better than this one, but for what you are getting its totally worth it
It would be nice if this place was renovated and brought up to date. The dinosaur downstairs is the same one from when I was a kid and a little disappointing. Please considering bringing it up to date a little. We really love coming there but most things are broken everytime we go.
Had such a fun time. If you find yourself in lubbock with children. You need to stop on by. The kids touch just about everythine. The staff is always easy to find. There were a few machines out of order. It doesnt matter. There is always so much to do. Some of the animals like the snapping turtle in a tiny aquarium and hes almost the same size. Other than that it is really fun and such a wonderful learning experience for the kids. You finally get to say yes touch that. Its great.
Its a nice place to take the kids to play in doors. The exhibits need some work, things look like they are falling a part a bit and are in need of repair. Just over all needs a little face lift. For the price of admission I would think the place would be kept up more.
Great for kids all ages. We had a 10, 5 and 1 and a half year old with us and they were all sad when it was time to go! Super interactive and everything was in work condition. I highly recommended this place for families. Be prepared there is no restaurant so you will have to go somewhere else for lunch.
Very disappointed with our trip today. This is a place our kids enjoy to go when we are in town visiting family. Never again. Only reason I am giving two stars is because the combustion show was neat. Most sections had at least 3 to 5 exhibits that didn’t work, the animal containers looked unkept, and the overall cleanliness of the whole place made me grossed out. Gum on the floors, cracked displays with grime in them, hair and wet stuff in the blocks. As much as we were charged for admission, and as many people were there, you’d figure that some routine maintenance and pride in the business would be done. So sad to see it go downhill.
The Science Spectrum was a fixture of my childhood, and remains the coolest hands-on museum Ive ever visited (including the Seattle Childrens Science Museum, and the Denver Museum of Natural Science). The IMAX has cool movies and there are traveling exhibits and events all the time to keep the experience fresh and new. Great for all kids, old and young!
Tha Mad Masquerade party at the Science Spectrum in Lubbock, Texas was mad!!! Everyone looked so nice in their costumes or gowns and we all had fun even though, I had no idea what I was doing while we were trying to solve a murder. After calming down from all of that, I actually looked through the exhibits and hands on experiments. There is a lot there, filled with the quality and learning a community needs. Yes, I am planning on attending next year!!!
Great place to take the family, if you live in the area it is a most do. CRITTERFEST is always awesome, some years better then the others but is a must go trip for my family every year. If you like different pets there are great contacts for rabbits, snakes, and hedgehogs, they also have great shows in the omni for the family to watch and activities to do. New things to do every month
Interesting to see the exhibits, but the birthday party exhibits need more engagement with the kids. The audience was young kids and the questions were too high level for 3 year olds.. Need training to adjust approach. That age does not know what carbon dioxide is....
I really wish it was more affordable. The exhibits need to be updated as well. The childrens play area was magical however the more interactive areas in the main area of the museum was missing pieces. I would also like to see more interactive exhibits in the main museum area.
I visited for Severe Weather Awareness day and was not impressed. This is a wonderful facility for school field trips however not a place for those just visiting lubbock. This used to be one of the neatest places but now it has been run down and is overall geared towards young children. The severe weather awareness day was no exception. I felt almost excluded from that activities because of how it was set up.
The theatre was great, and theres definetly a lot for kids to learn. However this place has no business holding animals in captivity. Their living conditions were terrible. The enclosures are disgusting and way under sized. Please do something about this!!! Otherwise, great place!!!!
The Science Spectrum is a great museum for adults and children. The first floor hosts an area where small children (under 5) can play and learn while playing pretend either as a news caster, grocery store customer or a veterinarian. The lower level has a nice aquarium with native texas fish and other animals along with a live show that lets children learn about various creatures and even view them up close. All in all this is a great museum!
Lots of fun to have with children here and the OMNI theater is great for first dates depending on what movie is showing. The OMNI theater is large, and mesmerizing both before and during the movie. Enjoyable the first up to third time through the attractions, but if youre a local it may get old as the attractions are often the same. Seasonal events are also great for family fun.
Ive been going to the science spectrum since it was located on 50th and slide. Have always loved it...... but after my gf and I visited today, sadly I will likely not be returning. The maintenance seems non existent, the aquarium is definitely more depressing than informative, and to top it off they advertised the wrong omni documentary so as it was starting they informed us it was not the movie we paid for. Really wish they could fix the place up some, maybe time for new management and a remodel?
This is a wonderful place to visit. There are interactive stations and it is a fun thing to do with friends or family. I am still looking for a time to go when its not packed, but it is still enjoyable. The Omni theater has interesting films. I would highly recommend!
This is a great science center for such a small town like Lubbock. Obviously, there are a lot of things that can be improved (for instance, hands-on parts of the museum are very old); but still, it is great to have this place in Lubbock. More people should visit this place more frequently, because there is a lot to learn in the universe and too little time! And the omnitheater is incredible, dont miss even 1 show!
It was amazing my little brother and family loved itThere was an T-Rex and other dino remains fun activities and the last time we went there was pinguens and today there was a germ presentation and how the digestive system works food was great and the gift shop was really cool

2022-03-29Talk about a blast from the past, a lot of the features were still there from when I was a kid. Getting to see my kids experience the same things was awesome. Some maintenance is definitely needed but no complaints. Really excited for the history of sports to open!

2022-02-23The museum is not being taken care of. The staff is lazy, all on their phones behind the desk in every area there is a desk. Sitting on their bottoms instead of straighten up the different areas. The museum could be wonderful but the staff isn’t doing their job. Most exhibits are missing parts or balls or whatever they need to do the fun learning experience. Of course kids have moved the food and other stuff from the pretend rooms, which is why they need a staff member on all floors moving and straightening each section as kids leave the area. Duh. L.a.z.y. There was also a dead turtle in his exhibit bloated laying on the rock looked like he had been there a few days. We want to love the museum it could be a great and fun place. We enjoyed being together but waste very disappointed in the broken or missing parts to so many exhibits. I doubt we will go back in the future. I mean we went on a Tuesday after lunch they were not busy and there is no excuse.

2021-12-14Interactive fun for kids (& some adults) with displays of science novelties and curiosities that help answer some why questions. Three floors of amusing and cheap entertainment.

2022-05-25Grew up coming here as a kid myself. Unfortunately it has stayed almost the exact same since then! Still a very neat place to take the kids but underwhelmed with how outdated everything was. Also wasn’t happy that a lot of the experience wasn’t working or was broken. Hope they are able to update soon!

2022-04-10Place has really updated exhibits since I was here 4 years ago. Interactive play from toddlers to big kids, and even a bunch of historical memorabilia for those who like the museum. Great experience, worth the 2 hr drive!
