Went with family for brunch. Added salt, pepper and butter to the grits. Everything else was seasoned well. The poached egg was cooked perfectly. The hash was great, and I’m a purple potato fan! But I don’t think I like banana pancakes so that wasn’t their faults lol. Lots of food for the price, such a plus. I’ll come back for lunch one day.
My wife had the crab cake sandwich and I had the Mediterranean salad. The crab cake sandwich had a surprisingly good flavor and the bun actually held up pretty well. However, the fries were quite soggy. The salad was ok and the hummus had a good flavor, although it was a bit too thick for my personal tastes. The pita was terrible.
Completely ignoredCame here on a slow Friday afternoon around 1 and walked up to a host stand which was in disarray and didn’t look like it was being used as such. We waited for several minutes as servers walked past us completely ignoring us. We finally stepped in front of a server and asked if we could get a table and he said to sit anywhere. We chose a spot on the patio and was ignored again. No one ever came to our table and after 15 minutes we left. The entire time servers were waiting on the tables around us and one server even look over at us but never acknowledged us.
Literally sitting at a table right now with a few empty tables around me so not super busy and yet have been waiting on a server for 25 minutes… No drink orders, no water, nothing… worst service in uptown ever and I literally live in the building this place is attached to and will not be back.
I had the chicken and waffles, I wouldnt say my dish was bad, it just lacked flavor. My girlfriend had the Eggwhich. It was AMAZING! I will be getting that next time we go back. We also had a bottle of champagne for $20 to go alone with the mimosa bar.The mimosa bar was really good. You got to pick multiple kinds of juice and fruits to go with your champagne. I felt that everything was priced reasonably. Oh yeah, and if you sit outside its great for dog watching. Lol. If youre into that kinda thing, like my girlfriend.
Its nice, clean comfortable environment. The staff was very friendly and timely. The presentation and preparation of food was very nice and professional indeed however the quality of ingredients and information about the ingredients was very poor. Their signature patty a combination of brisket, veal and another cut was an absolute joke and disappointed. I would have returned it if I had more time but had travel plans already scheduled. The soup and sauteed calamari was pretty good though.
I love the daily specials at State & Allen. Their pizzas are so delicious and serves have always been friendly when I ate there. Pizzas are offered as a gluten free option as well. Pictures show the Meaty Meat and Sausage and Arugula pizza. Bring your own mug for Sunday brunch and get free coffee! State & Allen is the only Green-certified restaurant in town. One thing they can improve is getting rid of the plastic straws!
Went for brunch with a friend. I had a tequila sunrise and it wasnt too strong or weak. I had the steak and eggs and everything looked and tasted delicious! Steak and eggs were both cooked to my preference not over or under done. My friend had two pancakes and they were way bigger than anticipated! He gave one to me so be prepared when you order pancakes. Other than that, service was excellent and the prices werent too high
State & Allen truly never disappoints! We have been going for years and years now and each time, the food and drinks are delicious! Recently, we had our rehearsal dinner there and everything ran so smoothly! Most of our friends and family were out-of-town and left as obsessed as we are with State & Allen! The new event room is also gorgeous!
I just went to have a tour on this property since my husband and I are looking for apartments, and this property its awesome. Great customer experience by Rena who was our guide and agent. Shes very helpful, sweet and attentive the moment we walked in. This building has great amenities throughout, and offers activities like happy hour and pool parties for their residents. The apartments are beautiful and have an incredible space compare to some other buildings in the uptown area. We are looking forward to call this place home in the next coming months. Definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to leave in the uptown dallas area👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
We went Saturday around 1pm. Not too busy. It seemed. The service was slow. Waited about 5 min before we even got waters. My potatoes were mostly overcooked. When the food was delivered we had to wait another 5 before the waiter came around to ask if we needed something else. If you get the mimosas get a double.
I really enjoyed the food. It was flavorful and delicious. However, the quality of drinks and service left a lot to be desired. I ordered two tequila sunrises and they both tasted different. My friends drink glass had someone elses lip print on it, which made me question their cleaning practices. The hostesses seems stressed and verbally complained about issues at the stand. The line to get to the host stand was disorganized and very cramped. It took us 15 minutes to get greeted and our order taken.
Food here is consistent and just ok, a fun local spot for hanging out, very casual. I recommend the eggwich for brunch and chicken strips when it isnt brunch hours. Ask for extra crispy and tossed in buffalo 👍They have experienced a lot of loss of long term staff and the service has suffered here, a few good people remain tho. The g manager should prolly stop not sit at the bar or close bars and talk about employees/former employees, really off putting and unprofessional 🚫Changes from 2 to 3 stars cause a few of the staff still there make it worth it to go in
I must say how me & a friend were treated with love and respect from Michelle the manager very accommodating , very professional & kind to us .She went out of her way to make sure we were happy. She is the type of Manger that needs to be praised 4 doin such an amazing 👏 😍 job to take Care of her customers...Id definitely come back because of Michelle and her beautiful attitude 😀 ❤ 😉
Do yourself a favor and never go here. Worst restaurant Ive ever been to. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. My 3 friends and had a reservation and came here for Sunday brunch. I came later then them and arrived 5 min after they ordered. I never saw our waiter and after 26 mins, I asked the host if he could get our waiter and he said that hell try but hes really busy..another 15 minutes pass by and we asked a waitress if she could get our waiter because Ive been waiting to order. She said shell get him. At this point I decided not to get steak and eggs and just go with a soup so that its quicker but no one came to take my order. We see the waitress telling our waiter in the kitchen and he is looking at us and is waving his hands in the air and looks super annoyed. Like...excuse me? And then he walks past us to the screen to print bills or something and just says hey rudely, prints his bills, and walks past us again and says hell be back to take my order. No apology or anything. AFTER 10 more minutes we decided to get up and leave. We told the host and he just said sorry. Lol I would never recommend this place to anyone. Its not even cute. I definitely would recommend going to Dream Cafe or Foxtrot for brunch- 3 min walk from this sad excuse for a restaurant. Also all of the staff members seemed very flustered. If youre short staffed, you shouldnt accept people that you LITERALLY cannot serve.
Food is really good, service was pretty bad. I’d give them another shot because of the food quality but waiters were inattentive.Monday evening. Bartender was very kind. She sent me to a table, no one came by for 12 minutes. A guy came over and asked for my drink, I asked how to order take out, he pointed to a QR code and walked away.
Went this weekend with a large group for a bachelorette party, and this was by far our favorite dinner while we were there! Knash and Anna were fantastic and made the dinner so much fun. The food was so great! I would recommend this place to absolutely everyone, especially large groups! The service was very quick. All around AMAZING time at State and Allen!!!
Great Service. Terrible food.I am vegan/Vegetarian and understand I have to create meals mostly where I go. But you guys had very few options and the ones I had were not good. I had the Mediterranean salad it was salty and soggy as if the produce wasnt fresh and the hummus wasnt good. The manager offered a refire so I chose the caprese egg white omelet and it was over cooked and rubbery at that point I just decided to just drink mimosas. The manager and waitress was very accommodating. However , it was this past Sunday and my friends all came there for Steak and Eggs and after they ordered and waited the waitress came to inform them that they ran out of steak and only one person at the table can have it so choose 😬😳. It was my first time there.
Boss didn’t greet me when I walked in, just stood there talking to someone else, didn’t even acknowledge me. It was my first time and I won’t be back! The place looks nice but I won’t be returning. I’m a food blogger in Dallas and love visiting restaurants but not this one! Lost a customer
What an overall wonderful experience - the ambiance, the indoor and outdoor seating, hip vibe, multiple TVs playing the NFL games and best of all, the delicious food. We had the Caesar side salad; Baja and Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and the best flourless chocolate cake and ice cream dessert. Yum! And one thing that made our visit that much more remarkable...a kind gentleman sitting next to us paid for our meal. A very big thank you ❤️❤️!
The food was fantastic. The service was terrible. The young man who took my order earlier told me his name, then when I returned and he noticed I was unsatisfied with the service he gave me another name. I was ignored when I first approached the counter by another man who was later identified as the manager on duty. When I asked what drinks he was good at making he replied none because Im 2 years sober, I couldnt figure out what that had to do with anything, I wasnt offering to buy him a drink then walked off to make the drink I settled for. I ordered a drink vodka tonic with my meal and when I came back for another it was in a much smaller cup but the price remained the same. When I originally received my order there were no napkins and my order didnt come with any condiments. The young man who struggled with his identity finally took my appeared unapologetic and annoyed that I was there. I understand that these times are tough and he may have a lot on his mind. But I am visiting as a guest, a guest who over tipped to make up for his lost wages .... I didnt deserve to be treated the way that I was this evening. If the owner reads this review, this is the name of the person who took my order. Im very upset with the service that I received, I was excited to give this place a try and embrace this neighborhood only to be treated in such a manner. I will share my experience with people and will most likely not return.
If it wasnt for the pretty good chicken tortilla soup I would have given a rating of a 2. The service was incredibly slow. I had to remind our waiter what I had ordered on numerous occasions and he still managed to forget. It seems like he was more interested in doing things that would make it easier for him than trying to provide a good customer service experience. As a first time visitor it left a bad taste in my mouth.....not sure if we will be going back for more.
For this place being such a hot-spot in uptown, they actually really deliver on the food and drinks front. I had low expectations but I now understand its not only crowded because its a great location and pup spot, but they also have delicious pizza, sandwiches, and drinks.
Wonderful experience. A perfect and classy State Thomas location, with plenty of seating and a lovely setting. Food was delicious, service was great and prices were reasonable. Excellent brunch and dinner menu, plus a wide selection of cocktails, beers and wines. Plenty of TVs to watch the games, and also separate patio and side room seating for more romantic or intimate conversations. Highly recommended.
Stay clear of this place especially during covid. I was appalled that our server would legit take off his mask when he came to our table to either take our order or ask if we needed anything. The service has always been terrible but the food is good and it’s in a cute neighborhood in dallas. Not worth it right now though. I will be crossing this on my places to support during covid for the simple safety measures they aren’t taking
Nice variety on the menu seems like you could be a little bigger though the love love dish I had was a little intense but the risotto and vegetables were cooked well just too much sriracha sauce I think. The craft beer I had was tasty and the bartender was very attentive and friendly. A little slow for a Saturday night at 10:15pm when I arrived. But they probably would like more on the people that live around the area so its a bit of a local spot but nice Concept in general good stuff and Ill be back to try some of their other items on their menu as well as some of the other craft beers.ThanksPS your website menu needs to be updated but I do understand that you just expanded your menu slightly.
This my second visit to State and Allen and I really enjoy their brunch and their restaurant setup. The staff was good and made some good recommendations about the menu. If you are looking for a new place to try for brunch I recommend here. They also have some good happy hour options available. I have not had a problem, but parking can be tricky depending on when you go.
Arrived at 8:06 (8 pm reservation). It wasnt clear where the front door was, went through the door next to the sandwich board and was immediately sandwiched between the bar seating and a server station. Was sa promptly, drinks and appetizer order put in, and both came out quick enough, but was never checked on after appetizer (Brick oven crab dip; was decent, couldnt taste the crab) came out and the server didnt come back to take dinner order until 8:40, was done with appetizer well before then. Ordered Baja chicken sandwich with side salad. The Baja chicken sandwich is white people spicy(read: not at all), the avocado and pepperjack cheese mute any diverse flavor palate, and the corn pico does nothing for it.Also do not recommend the NY strip CFS, who does that to a NY strip, and the potatoes had too much cream and no seasoning.Chef: recommend a cilantro lime marinade for the chicken, sub plain goat cheese crumbles for the pepperjack, lose the avocado and corn pico and replace with mango and red onion pico(salsa).
Tried State & Allen for brunch while on a trip to Dallas recently. The brunch drink specials were very good and both the bloody Mary bar and mimosa bar were well stocked. Everyone at our table got breakfast/brunch food and a few of us were disappointed. Some of the meals were quite dry and personally my meal the Poached and Prosciutto was very dry with the poached egg being more of a hard boiled egg than a poached egg. Maybe it was just an off day for the kitchen, otherwise the experience was good and service was also friendly.
$3 mimosas on the weekends! Yes you saw that right! The staff is always so friendly and helpful. We do tend to sit at the bar and love the attention we get there. Their pizza is delicious! Bbq chicken! Yum! We always get the cheese board, and the cheeses rotate often. The chicken tortilla soup is voted one of the best in DFW for a reason. It’s hearty and flavorful! Great place to watch games and enjoy company.
I have been going to state and Allen since I moved to the area in 2011. It has been consistently good for almost a decade. Don’t miss half price pizzas on Monday nights or half price wine on Wednesday’s. Silver bowl salad, buffalo chicken sandwich, and pizzas are menu highlights.
I went in to State and Allen for the first time last night and truly enjoyed myself. I was served some of the best tea in Dallas, the pork porterhouse, mashed potatoes with goat cheese was awesome as well as the green beans. The chocolate lava cake was just too much! (I had to take the majority of it home for a snack later on!) The service was great and the waitress was readily available. I hope they keep up the great work and Ill be going downtown more often.
If I could rate it lower I would. Ordered the turkey burger and it came out with unmelted cheese and a cold bun. I cut into the burger and take a bite and it’s dry as can be. I proceed to tell the waitress I was disappointed, and that the burger was very dry. She then tells me it could be because I asked for the burger to be reheated for the cheese to be melted....No. I’m sorry, I didn’t step off of a banana boat.A friend with me had the same issue with her bison burger. We get our checks, after saying we were disappointed in the meal. We weren’t offered another dish and/or a comped meal.Note: drinks were fine but, will not be coming back for food. I understand our waitress wasn’t in the kitchen cooking but, there were other customer service measures that could’ve been taken.
Ive been coming here for years and it has some of the best calamari Ive ever had. Most places its a little bit of squid with a ton of batter. Not here. Its got a ton of squid and lightly battered. Perfection. The bartenders are the best on the block. Its a very chill spot. Wednesday nights are half-priced wine (glass and bottle) night. Definitely give it a try if youre in the area.
I think 2 stars is generous, but since the food was pretty good I guess they deserve more than 1 star. We went with a party of 11 under a reservation. Table wasnt ready, tried to seat us at the bar, had to wait nearly 30 for a table. The manager was kind enough to give us some appetizers on the house, but our waiter was Gid awful. For his own sake he needs to find a job not working in the service industry. I dont even know where to begin with him. This restaurant is in a nice area and has potential, they really need to do better though. Maybe higher some more experienced staff maybe someone over the age of 21? Who knows. Anyways I wouldnt recommend it.
One of my absolute favorite restaurants in Dallas!! The food is amazing no matter what you order (my personal favorite is the arugula and sausage pizza). The staff is always friendly and kind, and they have daily specials for drinks and food! It’s usually not hard to find street parking, but on the weekends it gets busy so there is a parking garage right nearby you can use. They accept reservations through OpenTable.
Tried to stop in to State & Allen yesterday afternoon to enjoy some drinks and appetizers but were told by the hostess that the waitstaff needed a break after a busy brunch and that we could not have a table. There were at least 4 empty tables and we asked to sit down at one of them. Hostess literally told us no because the waitstaff needed to rest and take a break. We asked if we could sit at the bar and she again repeated that the waitstaff needed a break. We left!! This is the most unbelievable response I have ever gotten. We went to another bar right up the street and spent our money there instead. We will not be back! If I could give zero stars, I would have!!
I ordered a burger which was fine. However, my wife ordered chicken which was not thoroughly cooked through. They did give us a free dessert, but I feel the chicken dish should have been complimentary. Parking is also a problem. Their website says that they have 45 spaces, but they share those spaces with many other restaurants and parking was full when we arrived.
State & Allen has been a favorite of mine for many years but last night was my first experience with their private dining room. I booked the space for the North Texas Food Bank Young Professionals and S&A couldnt have been nicer and accommodating. Our server, Landon, was super attentive and organized. Thank you for a great experience!
Great happy hour specials but really crappy service. Dont go unless you feel like waiting at least 4-5 minutes to be greeted by your server. Every server knows the golden rule is to greet your table within the first 30 seconds of being sat, or at least a knowledge them and let them know that you are aware they are sitting there. Ive been there a total of 5 times, 2 of them being on a very slow night and every time it was just awful. Its such a shame because I would have rated it 5 stars, but the service really is that bad.
Popular bar and restaurant with garage door walls that open up to make most of the space semi-outdoors. Salads, sandwiches, soups, and grilled meats with no one fixed cuisine point of view. Yummy curried chicken pita sandwich. Satisfying tortilla soup. Fast friendly service.
Grabbed a buffalo chicken sandwich and chicken tenders to go. Huge portions for the tenders and very well seasoned. The chicken sandwich could have been bigger so I threw on a few of the tenders to help fill the space left on the bun. When I opened the sauce the spice almost brought tears to my eyes but oddly enough when I ate the sandwich I only tasted sweet with maybe the tiniest bit of heat. Overall great flavor on the sandwich. I will definitely be going back.
I love the neighborhood friendly environment of S&A! Everyone is so friendly when you walk in and weather you are on the patio, inside, or at the bar, you always have the best seat in the house. I would argue that they have the best fish tacos in town! And half off pizza Monday is a great deal.
If you live in the State Thomas neighborhood of Uptown, then State & Allen Lounge is probably a go-to spot for you. It is for us.The service has improved (it used to be terrible), and I honestly think the food is good for bar food. Theres a nice big patio for people watching, its very walkable, and their daily specials are solid. On those nights when you dont know what to do for dinner, State & Allen Lounge is a great spot to get good food.
The bacon avocado burger in medium rare/well I so easy to chew and tender, and does not leave your buns soggy 😋👌. The sweet potato fries were cooked too long so half were as crunchy as tortilla chips but I dipped them in honey mustard which was not a charge so yussss for the sauce 💛. Water was clean and my meal came out to $17-18 bucks. They do not take any form of mobile pay 📵💲 so I ordered the dessert in their website as a pickup but they also offer delivery🚗 -Pina Panna cota was a macarron with like 8 blueberries and what was probably a panna cota before it melted on my walk home :( Still ate it, but it was suuuper sweet so I only took a few bites.
Had the special of rabbit/spinach/Grits...pretty good. Rabbit is always gamey to me but the flavor over all was good. The guy to girl ratio on a Wed. (due to half price wine I would assume) is favorable. I travel for work and most of the time its a sausage fest out there. Great spot in my opinion.
I visited State & Allen last Saturday 5/19/18 for drinks after brunch. Our server Katelyn was a very sweet girl but somehow charged my debit card for another tables full tab. On Saturday I called and spoke to Brent who was super apologetic and let me know that his operations manager was at a catering event but would be in on Sunday and would reverse the charges and he would give me a call and let me know once the reversal transaction was completed. I didnt receive a call so on Monday I called to speak to him and ended up speaking to Laura the General Manager. She was a complete nightmare, she was so rude and wouldnt let me explain the situation, she kept cutting me off saying that Brent is not there and she checked and the charges had been reversed and that I needed to be patient and wait on my bank. She seemed to be so annoyed with the fact that I was calling in reference to a mistake made by her staff. Again, Katelyn was very sweet and Im sure it was an honest mistake but management definitely dropped the ball. As a general manager, Laura should be leading by example and could definitely use some sensitivity training for her aggressive behavior.
Not very happy with the service that I had today. Took way too long for just a desert. and to be staying there watching a bartender grab a customers drink to throw away but then start sipping on it through the same straw is pretty disgusting. They need to get their act together!
Nearly impossible to find a spot, but if you do, lucky you. State & Allen is a great spot with many comfortable indoor and outdoor places to sit. Most restaurant/bars have a beer rep; this place has a Glendiddich rep giving out flights of scotch! Will be back (if I can find a spot to park).
Dont eat.I cant belive the kitchen let the food leave in the condition that it was. Apps were inedible...sent back. Mains... predictably were unedible. The meat on every dish had clearly been left in the fridge or freezer for way... way ... way too long.. no B.S. the chicken was like over-cooked pork, the calimari was easily dry and horrible looking on sight.. the taste was like nothing Ive experienced after eating off the streets of Asia for 10 years... everything was terrible. I havent sent food back like this in at least 15 years.
Went in to pick up a to go order and received nothing but blatant attitude and disrespect for absolutely nothing from the so called manager Aaron....cant believe these ppl treat their customers this way. If you dont like your job, find another one! Good thing I was picking up for someone else, cuz I would never spend my coins there.

2022-04-06Usually here for morning donut and coffee run but experienced Sunday brunch and truly enjoyed it! Great mimosa price and everyone enjoyed their food selection - two of us wanted to order seconds but we stayed strong 🤞🏾!

2021-12-12Some friends and I went to State and Allen today for some Sunday brunch, and the atmosphere was phenomenal. This place definitely feels like a local place, where everyone knows each other. I had the some spicy bloody marys and then I ordered the Triple Dip and the Pesina Chicken Tortilla Soup. All of them were so delicious, and the presentation was great too. The service today was fantastic, and our bartender Nino took care us with the utmost attention and quality drinks! He definitely made us feel at home with his charisma and warm welcome. If you get the chance, I highly recommend stopping.

2021-11-16We had the WORST service. We were seeing the male and female managers more than our actual server (guy). The hostess DID NOT want to be there. She was rude and should not be face when walking in. I ordered a Benedict and had to send the eggs back twice bc it was either overcooked or under. Then I had to ask for a side of hollandaise bc the food was so dry by the time they kind of got it right; they really should have re- made the whole thing . The apple whiskey drink on the menu did not taste as described on the menu and we had to order another drink in place of it. We got charged for both even though one was sent back and they were both the same price. We even got charged for the eggs that were re-made. The chicken and waffle was not up to par compared to some of the surrounding brunch places in that area. Parking is a hassle . Refills were a joke so dont come thirsty. I dont recommend this place. Only giving this place 2 stars bc the white pizza was actually good.

2022-01-23I Went for brunch i feel like its more of a bar than brunch. Smelled more old alcohol than food. But i will say the food i got was Bussin Bussin. It was a burger and pizza. I couldnt really tell who was staff and who wasnt. If i wouldnt have spoken up about placing an order i feel like i wouldnt have ate for a while.

2021-08-31Had a great experience here! The food was amazing, the staff was courteous and attentive, and the atmosphere was bright and fun. We were particularly impressed by the draft beer selection and bar. The barstaff were knowledgeable and service was expedient. We will definitely return here.

2022-04-11The food & mimosas were really good. The server was pretty dull but overall, it was a decent experience. I’ll definitely go back for the food & the prices were reasonable.

2021-09-20I really wanted the pork chops and my sister wanted the steak and a Mojito but they were out of alot of things. The manager apologize due to the food delivery truck. We still had a good time. And I would give them another chance.

2022-03-27Solid brunch spot, though you might miss out if you dont make a reservation especially for Sunday brunch. The partially shaded dog friendly sidewalk patio is great for people watching. Weve eaten here at least a dozen times now and always make it a point to bring out of town visitors here for reliable middle of the road brunch- Its not a greasy spoon spot but not fancy either- just a really good comfortable middle. Good cocktails & beer. I give the food 3 stars, the service is reliably 5 plus stars- theyre always efficient and friendly even when getting hammered busy. We always appreciate a restaurant staff thats good to our dog too.
