Wow! I am impressed with this store. It was my first time and I ended up buying a guitar. Ask for Jason, he is very knowledgeable and took the time to guided me through, play the guitars and also some let me had privacy on my jamming. Thank you Jason, Ill be back for sure...Update:I went back the next following day and went straight to Jason. He treated me woth the same professionalism and respect like the day before. He is the best. Definitely comeback soon...
Its a cool store with lots of awesome stuff but Ive just had weird interactions with the staff several times. For example I was looking for a uke one day and I was finger picking on one, and some of the staff behind the counter started making fun of me and saying its always the uke section. I guess they thought I was playing stairway? I came back another time to grab some strings for a uke and the guy wouldnt let me look at them to pick out what I wanted. He picked them out for me and when I got home they were tacky and red colored which is not what I would have gone for. Another time when covid was kind of new and the store was sectioned off with tape, I was confused on how to navigate the place, and the guy at the register was clearly not happy with me when I asked for help. Ive been here many times and bought a few guitars and such, and the staff is often super nice, but I would rather just go somewhere else at this point.
Walked in the door half an hour before closing (wasted my time at GC before coming here). I was scrambling to see what nylon string acoustics were available, and Eli was like take your time. Even as the store was closing they didnt rush me. The world needs to bring back old fashion customer service.
Probably not the best place for Martin service / repairA few months ago, I contacted Strait Music - an authorized Martin repair center about my Martin 16 series. The low E sounds very weak and muddy compared to the other strings through the factory Fishman undersaddle pickup. I scheduled a drop-off, they had it for a few days and told me to come pick it up. It sounded exactly the same.I left it for further evaluation, went through some back and forth on the phone and eventually arrived at Strait Musics official position that it works and sounds fine - amplification of 5.25 out of 6 strings isnt that bad. If I dont like it, they recommend the LR Baggs Element, which they offered to sell to me and install at full price. Thanks Strait Music!Update - After posting this review, I got a call from Jim, the repair manager. Hes a great guy, and seems genuinely interested in getting things taken care of. Will update when Ive had a chance to take the guitar back in.
This place is a musicians heaven. Everything you need, they have it. You starting a band? Go to Straight Music. You starting up a solo project? Go to Straight Music? Are you just now starting to dive into the musical realm? Go to Straight Music. 20/10 would highly recommend.
Excellent customer service and they have competitive prices. I have bought several items from them, they seem to have pretty much anything you need. One time I brought my sons tuba which it had the mounth piece stucked and one their staff members took the piece out very quickly and he did not want to charge me. They are always very friendly and they really know their stuff.I highly recommend this place:)
Amazing staff, this is my new go-to local music store! They let me test out different pedals for hours to make sure they were what I really wanted, and were happy to spend tons of time taking to me and answering questions. After I bought my pedals, Madeline even helped me get a pedal board set up! 10/10 would come again.
There was a heavy set man at the counter, not very helpful. He made me wait at least 30 minutes to purchase a keyboard, then a very helpful guy helped me out and I was able to complete my purchase. I should have walked out but I waited. Be ready to wait because the customer service is not very good.
I ended up going to both locations. Everyone was very friendly. Ultimately I spent the most time at the southern location, which is bigger and had more guitars. Madison was super friendly and helpful. I played some pretty high end guitars and I never felt rushed. Ended up spending well over an hour in there. They have really expensive guitars down to learner guitars. The staff is great and they take the time to explain things to you. They have everything from pianos, cellos, trumpets, trombones, guitars, amps, music…their selection is pretty good too. Highly recommend checking these folks out.
The staff was approachable, knowledgeable, and helpful. I need a real bass drumb pedal for my Roland electric drum kit. There were several options online, some good and some worked not work. Strait Music helped me choose the right one. We have purchased drums, sticks, seats, headsets, and amplifiers SMS we will be back.
Just purchased a new electric piano from Strait Music this week and found their service, pricing, and products to be excellent. We got a fair price for a gorgeous instrument and they even helped us creatively load it into a ridiculously small car for the ride home. Well be going here for all our musical needs.
Was greeted by a friendly face upon entry, who both welcomed me & oriented me to the store layout/protocol.The store is extremely clean & well-organized. Robust collection of instruments, brands, accessories. The acoustic room was comfortable, the guitars clean & accessible. Was checked on a few times, but never hassled. I even made a friend! This is an accomplishment that gains value as we get older, less eager to make room for new relationships, experiences, points-of-view, et al.
I took a 1976 Gibson marauder in there and was impressed by the service quality and price (bridge repair). I wanted a pedal that was in the north location, contacted them via text from the website and they responded quickly and sent the pedal to the south location. My new go-to guitar store.
I’ve been going to Strait Music for most, if not all of my bass repairs, maintenance. Jess does an incredible job with any all repairs of my basses. The sales team is also super helpful and not pushy like some some high-end shops in town are. Bought a Fender American Original 60s P-bass here and they helped me with a great deal out the door!Recently went in to rent an upright bass and the process was flawless. With the addition of Violin’s Etc, it’s a great community based music store that I would recommend for everyone.
The employees were very knowledgeable and willing to answer all of my questions, from accordions to guitars to violins (and, yes, we asked all kinds of questions about the three since I am currently trying to pick up the accordion and my wife is looking into the violin). There was also a pretty impressive assortment of instruments and accessories. I would highly recommend this music store to any novice trying to dip into a musical hobby, or professionals looking for top of the line gear.
Ive recently been scouring the internet trying to get my hands on some Elixir 8 string baritone guitar strings since Elixir has stopped making them for the next few months due to material shortages. During my search I came across these guys. I was able order multiple sets which were shipped to me immediately. I think I received them in about three days which really surprised me. The price is fair and the staff was helpful in every way possible.
Jed, all youve done with your life is hang out at music stores. But D, this is different this time. It is Strait Music Company. This store has everything! Ive come home with guitars, ukes, amps and other items from Strait and not only was I pleased, the folks who won items purchased here at our band giveaways were very pleased. I really like the folks who work here and like their selection.
Very elitist. Dont go in unless you look rich or have an expensive instrument to repair. Go in with a childs starter instrument to repair and get shamed and refused to make the adjustment.. Too bad this kid is the first of 3 musically gifted kids who will be buying instruments for school for the next 25 years. Someone else is getting the business now.
Lately, Ive been kicking around an idea for a Podcast. So on a whim, I decided to stop into the S. Lamar location to look at mics. Keep in mind Im a 100 percent newbie starting from scratch in the audio/visual world. The guy that helped me (Mark/Mike?) could tell I was a novice certainly by my questions but instead of being a sales guy, he was totally a cool guy. He had so much patience with my elementary questions which in turn provided me with a wealth of fundamental information to better understand what Im getting myself into. Thank You! He was genuine and knowledgeable, traits rarely found in retail stores. Thank you for being awesome and Thank you for remain a true Austin institution of kindness and weirdness! -V3
They have a great selection of guitars acoustic and electric, however their bass selection is very limited. The staff are all 10/10, super nice and knowledgeable. Great selection of accessories for instruments as well. Ive been a loyal customer here for years and will continue to do so.
Hands down best guitar shopping experience in Austin. The staff at both locations were helpful, patient, knowledgeable, and passionate about music. Really great customer service - engaging but no sales pressure - and even though I didnt buy a guitar the day I came in, I imagine Ill order through Strait when I eventually make a decision since I was so impressed.Contrast that with the experience at the big box guitar store here and its clear to see why Strait has stood the test of time
I originally tried to schedule an appointment through their website over a week ago, but no contact was ever made. So I decided to call this morning and see what their options were. I was directed to Alex and she told me I could come in today. We arrived a little after 2 and it was packed. Thankfully, she was able to assist me and my son. This was his first time playing an instrument for his middle school band. She showed me different variations based on experience and style. She explained the payment options, benefits and had all the required accessories for his instrument. Im very glad we came in today. Thanks to Alex, we got the saxophone we needed and we will definitely come back again!!
I would like to thank everyone at Strait music. For your true professional experience. Its good to know you will be there when I need professionals . and to all aspiring young players , just remember this! Practice makes perfect and perfect makes money! Thank you again! Jimmy Reed
I brought in my digital piano that was pretty beat up. There were multiple keys broken and it needed to be cleaned out. I was willing to part with about $400, and they did it for $60 (not that I know what it should have been priced). I feel like they did a great job and it was a fair price. Would recommend for repairs. They definitely didnt screw me over. Id say trustworthiness is 6 stars!
I went in yesterday to get a trombone for my son starting sixth grade band. I was a bit nervous, because I wasnt sure what to ask for. I came in, was greeted right away. I love that when you walk right in there is a table with sanitizer and masks. Everyone must clean hands when they walk in. Right away, I told Ashleigh what I needed and she got right to it! Suddenly, I had everything I needed. The transaction was smooth and I am grateful. The look on my sons face when he finally got his trombone was so worth it. :) Thank u!
I like the space and the workers seemed to be busy with helping others. I felt like they didnt think I was going to be a sale for them so I didnt get much assistance. But they seemed knowledgeable and they knew the names of most of the shoppers. A good spot though, inventory was amazing
Went in for back to school band supplies, greeted at the door by a VERY helpful staff. The staff gathered the list for me and got it all taken care of, turned a hour ordeal (if i was looking) into a 5 min wait. Worth every penny, since I personally was flying blind. I recommend this store very much if youre a novice at music like myself. I cant speak for anyone with lots of music experience, they might be looking for a different experience.
I had an issue with a guitar being set up taking much longer than originally told, poor communication, and issues with the work. The owner reached out and made things right. Im amending my previous review. Ive had good experiences with Straight music in the past. They seem to care about relationships and keeping business.
Always a cool and epic place to visit. Bought my jazzmaster here, its my favorite guitar. I like how they dont judge me when I try out the pedals even though im not so good at guitar. Im not playing guitar center classics like GNR but really just trying different fuzz pedals playing Sabbath. The employees are always super helpful too. To the nice older gentleman by the audio interfaces, sorry for subjecting you to me cycling through 8 different fuzz pedals while playing sweet leaf for an hour.
By far the rudest service that I have ever been met with. Was testing pianos out when one of the staff members told me to go and play on the digitals in the back as it didnt look like I was looking for a piano when in fact I was (age discrimination). I was playing in the back when another salesman rudely asked are you done in there?! Will absolutely not come back to this institution, at our company we actually dont NOT sell just because of someones race, size, age, or creed. Maybe your institution should actually learn how to sell properly. You didnt gain potentially thousands of dollars in profit because your staff wanted to treat me like I was disgusting. Thank you for letting me post this review today.
These guys know music! I’ve been a customer of theirs for over a decade, and I’ve never, ever, been let down by an employee with their knowledge and customer service. It feels like a small family business, but one that has the resources of a bigger chain. Prices are good too! If you’re a musician in need of instruments or supplies, I’d make Strait your go to.
Great shop! They cater to the pro gigging musician to the intimidated parent and everyone in between. They also carry a strong selection of guitars, drums, pianos, band instruments, pretty much whatever gear you would want to buy theyve got. They also have have a great repair department. I have never had bad experience shopping here and Ive been a Strait customer for years.
Its a first rate quality minded music store, the staff is professional and helpful.. Strait is just a very cool Music Store with a great inventory of musical instruments and a great Guitar inventory Acoustic Classical And Electric..A first rate Music School for all levels and styles of music..
Great local music store.Update 2022_01_05 - Jenn in the Sting Luthier shop just serviced an Upright Bass for me. Jenn replaced the bridge, sound post, and end pin. Reglued some joints and gave it a once over. The work was super fast and super perfect. The bass played beautifully right outta the box. Jenn also went above and beyond on some questions I had. Highly recommended!!!
Every employee you passed by asked if they could help you. We were there to pick up a repaired clarinet for my granddaughter who leases it from them. Quick job. Good work. No charge because it was a lease. Quick checkout too!PERFECT experience for us! Well done Strait staff!!
This review is a bit overdue. Excellent service, and I’ve always had great experience getting gear repairs done as well. Especially for being local, the selection is awesome. Don’t waste your time or money at Guitar center, because these folks can and will take much better care of you.
Bought a used guitar from Strait Music Company off of Reverb, and it came in off the charts, amazing, basically brand new condition. The price was the same or better than anything else I could find online for the same guitar, despite being in FAR superior condition. Thank you so so so much. Buy from this place, you won’t be disappointed.
The employees at Strait are down to earth and real. There are no pretentious vibes or condescending attitudes. Not only is the staff honest, welcoming and helpful, they are extremely knowledgeable and proficient. The techs there are true masters and have been able to repair all of our gear with flawless precision. These men and women are absolute experts.
I stopped I here for the first time yesterday. I was greeted warmly by the people at the door, which was a nice touch. The person in the guitar area was very helpful. Unfortunately, they dont stock the brand of strings I was looking for. They did, however, have the great earplugs Ive been looking to replace for a long time that no one else has any more. Ill shop here again (except for the strings they dont stock).
Great place to purchase instruments for band and orchestra students. Friendly and helpful staff. They do repairs and sell music books. Nice selection of cases and really anything you may need for your student to complete the classes at their middle or highscool . There is even a music school attached to this location. I want my students to attend one day. Awesome place to browse.
Im a beginning guitar player and brought in my brand-new Kramer SM-1 for a minor set up. Jess Baker took extremely good care of my guitar. She knew I drove in from out of town and had everything done in an hour and a half so that I wouldnt have to drive back into town to pick it up at a later date. Thats not something I asked her to do. She was just being nice. She was also very knowledgeable and informative, answering my questions about the guitars electronics, etc. Most importantly, she was very friendly, smiling the entire time.Downstairs, Chris in the guitar section set up my son with a Les Paul in the amp room and let him play around while we waited for my guitar.Great experience. It became my go-to music store, for sure!
Idk what it is here in Austin but seems like all music stores just carry nothing but Gibsons les Pauls and fender strats. Both locations are very small and have a small selections of guitars. Again nothing but les pauls, fenders strats. Nothing against those guitars but come on I dont think every one here is just looking for those guitars. Need more Ibanez or Jacksons guitars or esp or ltd
Strait sold me a new cello at a good enough price that I was able to trade it in at the very same price after over six months of use. Im surprised at getting such a good value at an instrument retailer - even Strait. Also, the bow that came with the cello failed to tighten after a month or two, for no fault of mine. Instead of interrogating me and making me wait for a month for a repair or replacement, the guy at the repairs desk (skeptically) allowed me to walk out with a new bow, no questions asked. Thats excellent service. He was willing to take a chance that I wasnt lying about a defect. Thanks! I wasnt! The new bow is great.
Got credited free Tuba lessons here once, great company. Always talk to them in person and you can often work something out. Excellent choice for school band students and acoustic musicians more than pro rockers, but they can always order parts and the repairs and custom work are of unmatched quality.
Good stock. Some of the staff are stuck up until they see your wallet. Bought a Nice Jackson bass at a fair price even though they did not want to help in any way with the bass I brought in to repair for a show. Hope this doesnt happen again to anyone rushing around in the music scene......
I brought my severely damaged Bach Stradivarius in for a repair. Dennis, the instrument repair technician, was up front with the risks involved, and the pricing. He was able to complete the work with exceptional turnaround time, and very good quality for a great price. For less than $200, he was able to completely restore my horn that would have otherwise cost $3000 to replace. I would recommend the services at this location to any of my peers.
My daughter needed a replacement reed for her oboe, and the staff was incredibly helpful in helping us select new ones. Weve been coming to Strait for years, for all kinds of musical needs: choral music, sheet music for the piano, instrument repairs, instrument purchases, etc. The staff is always courteous and patient. The store used to be a movie theater, which may explain the slightly chaotic organization and layout... It can be a bit overwhelming, and its easy for me to feel a bit lost and disoriented in trying to find what Im looking for.
I’m not much of a review writer, but Dustin at Strait Music was incredibly helpful. I have been interested in getting back into playing piano and I am incredibly glad I went here over Guitar Center. I was able to get an extremely nice Roland digital piano for far less than I had imagined. Dustin listened to my concerns and spent time with me to help me get all the features I wanted. Incredible experience and I was able to bundle a few things together to get a nicer digital piano than I was expecting at a cost lower than I had imagined. Thank you guys!
Strait music has good customer service, the technician was able to look up exactly what we need for my son to get started in band this fall. She got everything set up to be delivered to his school for the beginning of next year. The instrument was in good condition and the price was reasonable.
Just moved here from San Antonio and was looking for a decent music store. Got recommended by a friend, absolutely love this place. Attentive, friendly staff, and a huge selection of items for piano, brass, woodwind, percussion, guitars, and strings. It is equivilant to Alamo Music or High School music in S.A. Will return here for all my music needs in Austin!
A very helpful gentleman, who has worked at this place for 30 years, told us the facts of what they have and whats not offered there. Pointed out how each mic worked and the potential of the quality. This man is very dedicated to what he does and it is much appreciated. If you need guidance an any audio related products come to this place.
I used the location that is located in North Austin (183). I came to buy new strings for a guitar that I borrowed. I wanted all metal strings. The person told me that my guitar should use nylon strings. He also educated me about my guitar. A couple of weeks later I ended up buying a guitar for myself. Again he educated me about my guitar. He seemed very knowledgeable and the other person also helped me. Great crew. Thanks for all your help and knowledge and for restringing the guitar for me. I will be coming back.Keep up the good work. I am sorry I cant remember both of your names.
Local business. Helpful, friendly staff. Great selection of acoustic and electric guitars, plus ukes, mandolins, etc., effects, band and orchestra instruments and accessories, pianos, percussion, sheet music and instructional books. One staff member went out of his way to make sure I received a discount that I was eligible for.
Ive been to many music stores in my life but none have come close to the customer service of straight music company. I was in the market for an acoustic when I stopped by and spoke with Chris. Now I had done my research on the topic before coming and was expecting our interaction to be a typical one sided information exchange but Chris blew me away with how much he knew about acoustic guitars, wood, models, you name it! and on top of that he was very friendly and helpful. I think I went back to the store 5 different times to test drive and shootout different acoustics and every time Chris was just as friendly and accommodating as the last time I went. Hands down straight music company has the best customer service I have ever experienced in a music store. I will certainly be doing all future musical equipment business with them.
David Strait is the man to see if youre looking to buy a piano in Austin. I was recently in the market for a nice upright piano for my wife. On the first visit, we went into the store together to get an idea of what our options were and what kind of cost to expect. David patiently showed my wife all the different upright piano options, and she got to figure out which ones she would like best. We decided that the Yamaha U1 or U3 would be our best bet. My wife didnt think we could currently afford a piano, but unbeknownst to her, I had figured out a way to make it happen.I made my second visit to Strait Music the following week by myself to buy my wife the piano she wanted. David Strait gave me a very fair price on the U3, and we made it happen. The piano was delivered the same week and within the window that was promised. That afternoon when my wife got home, she was in for the surprise of her life!We enjoyed our experience at Strait Music so much that the day after the piano was delivered, my wife and I went back to purchase a bunch of new sheet music. They have a great selection, and chances are they will have what you are looking for. If you have any musical needs in the Austin area, I would very highly recommend Strait Music.
I really enjoy the sound proofed amp room. Great idea to really test out any potential amp I may purchase. Strait has a small first selection than Guitar Center, but they carry guitars that you usually do not see at Guitar Center. The acoustic room its also a favorite of mine. If you havent been here, take a break from Guitar Center and come check this place out!
I was recently in the market for a top quality acoustic guitar. I tested various brands in numerous shops in Austin and compared prices even with several on-line music companies. The folks at Strait were extremely patient and helpful as I tried several brands and models for a couple of months. During this adventure, numerous sales staff helped me with my selection and all of them were very courteous, informative and patient with me. They were always willing and wanting to answer my questions.I finally decided to purchase a new Taylor 614ce acoustic guitar. I price shopped Guitar Center and several on-line music companies. Strait Music beat all the other store prices and had the exact guitar in stock that I wanted. Needless to say, it was a pleasure to deal with these guys. After purchasing my new Taylor, I decided to have different strings put on the guitar and to have it adjusted to my specs. Shaun (repair shop) did an excellent job of servicing the guitar. He went way beyond my expectations in adjusting my new guitar. He did a great job and I would trust him with any of my guitars!!!Since Shauns service was excellent, I decided to take my 1975 Epiphone acoustic guitar for him to check over. Again, he spent nearly two hours checking it over from top to bottom and made numerous adjustments which were most needed The guitar now sounds fantastic.Needless to say, Strait Music staff bent over backwards to provide professional service for my guitar needs. I highly recommend them to anyone, regardless if you are a beginner or an experience guitarist. Besides, they are a great bunch of folks!!!
Just wanted to say that Bob Baier, (instrument repair at the Northwest store) has taken care of all my saxes, and my clarinet and flute, for over 20 years and he is the best. He quickly identifies the problem and fixes it every time. It is great having someone like him that I can trust with my instruments. And Jack, the manager, and all the other workers are always very friendly and helpful.
Absolutely incredible customer service and selection of any gear you might need. The service department is top notch with timely and perfectly done repairs. I’ve received the best help choosing out the best gear for what I need and the staff is incredible professional and knowledgable answering every question I could possibly have. Shopping here is such a treat
I went in for a specific part for my sons sax. I met with Austin and he took the time to look up our instrument and spoke with Paul in repairs. I got the right screw and the Lyre that i went in for and now my son is a happy band camper! Thank you Strait Music! Also, i just want to say that Dennis has worked on my sons sax year after year and we have always been very satisfied with his work.
Strait Music is one of the go-to places in Austin for anything musical! Whether youre a musician a student or a filmmaker that needs quality soundgear this is the place to go!The staff here will go out of their way to try to make sure that youve got everything that you need!I recently had an emergency situation where I needed just one part from a microphone kit and they didnt sell it individually - so they opened one of their microphone kits, sold me just that piece and was able to reorder it to restock it in the original kit that they had on sale. Hows that for service!
I like walking into a store and seeing the same staff across multiple years. Depending on what Im looking for--and I shop every section of the store save drums--theres someone who Ive done business with before who I have a relationship with. This is like gold to me. Go try to have a guy/gal at GC. No one over there last more than a few months. Folks at Strait are there for the long haul and it shows.
We to rent to buy an instrument for my sons middle school band for next year. The guy that took care of us eas good, but the other lady not so nice personality. Its a family pwn business and I believe thst they are mot too professional. They have better prices than the other company.
The staff is knowledgable and friendly. Ive bought an Yamaha electronic piano, and a Epiphone SG and Gretsch ukulele for my son from Strait and have been happy with the gear and the service. However Im not so thrilled with the service department. On two occasions Ive brought guitars in for setup. Both had fret buzz going in and both still had it when I got them back. The second time I took note of the saddle positions before I dropped it off. They didnt appear to have been touched when I got it back. Ill be taking my equipment elsewhere from now on.
Great shop. With two locations, Strait Music is the Austin areas most comprehensive music store and is a dealer for fifteen, or so, major guitar brands including Gibson (Five Star) status and Martin, Taylor, Fender, Takamine, Gretsch, and on, and on! Thats just guitars. Their selection of amps and all things guitar is second to none. Whether guitar, amp, or accessory, each product line Strait carries is represented in earnest, with no shortage of models to choose from. The main thing Im keen on is the laid-back but, this is important, professional atmosphere which clearly comes from the stores management and cascades down through sales and instrument setup and repair. With the inexorable expansion of online guitar influence from Reverb, G-Base, eBay, and Craigslist, Strait has been one of the few stores, and now Im talking nationally, to maintain a substantial brick and mortar presence. With smaller local (again, speaking nationally) stores struggling to stay afloat, Strait has navigated these fresh waters with aplomb. Thats not any easy thing to do in a business where profit margins are historically low. People who own and operate music stores do it for the love and greater good of both music and community, not to make money hand over fist. So the next time your walking around Guitar Center think of the long term damage youre about to do to these smaller (many, like Strait, are steeped several family generations deep) but far more knowledgeable store owners, their loyal staff (not like Guitar Centers Hey, dude, whats up... revolving door of salespeople) and, layers deeper, the long term degradation of both the commodity (guitars and related gear) and community (the kind of people you want living next door). Its easy to buy a guitar on line. But the buying experience and customer service (there is none) last only seconds and the only people youre helping are the heads of monolithic, mega-corporations. Think about what youre doing. Its a way of life. Youll make the world a better place and feel better doing it by leaving Mr. Anonymous at home in front of the computer while you jog or bike on down to strait for a far more meaningful buying experience.
After a store closer to home failed to fix the problem on my son’s alto clarinet, on a friend’s recommendation we drove an hour to Strait Music. It was worth the trip. Alan in the repair shop immediately diagnosed the problem and had my son’s instrument repaired in two days. From now on, when we need an instrument repaired, we will make the trip to Austin.
I have Taken my Kids here for many Years. They have everything you can think of including Music Lessons. Straight Music company in Austin Texas Rocks. You can ask them Anything. They really know their sh*t..I mean stuff...I mean Anything Music Relative.. Relation.. yeah so..Go to Straight Music Company in Austin Texas.
Let me start off by saying I love strait music!!! The staff and the environment is all very welcoming the only thing thats keeping this from bring a 5 star review is the lack of left handed instruments on display :( because of this I usually have to result in having to do second hand buys or winging an online purchase from places other than strait I would love if more often I could walk in and really get a feel for what Im about to purchase :( I know i cant be the only left handed musician in the Austin area that experiences this problem
I have been going to this store a long time and they have not changed.. They are very helpful and they take their time to make sure you find what you are looking for... They are very informative and they treat everyone with respect, they dont look down on you if you dont know everything about instruments, like some other stores.. A+++...
I called about getting a setup done for my Strat. They said they charge $65 for the whole shebang (cleaning, fret work, setup, everything). There was no option to just set the bridge up and adjust the truss rod, so I said Fine, whatever Ill just take it in. I dropped it off and the guy who took asked if I wanted to wait around or have them call me when its ready. I said I was gonna leave and that they should call me. Then the guy said it usually takes around 10 days which made no sense to me. Why would they ask if I was gonna wait around if I had to wait there for 10 days? I left it there anyway.... over THREE WEEKS went by and I never got a call back. I went over there and they said they hadnt even touched it yet. I just took my guitar back and left. Maybe 3+ weeks is okay for some people to wait for a setup but, to me, thats just ridiculous. I didnt give them a 1 star because they werent rude about it or anything. Also their guitar selection is kinda meh.Edit: I went back a second time and they got it done really fast. The tech was a nice guy. If you ever take a guitar in just MAKE SURE TO ASK how long it might take and hold them to it. Make a follow up call if they dont get back to you in a few days. Sometimes theyre crazy backed up. The setup on my fender was actually really nice and comfortable. Id take it there again. Id still like to see I bigger brand variety (PRS, Ibanez, Jackson) but theyve probably decided that their average customer looks for what they already have in stock.
I am a novice player and travel a lot. While in Austin I broke string on my guitar and being under a time crunch I searched for the earliest opening guitar shop that opened early close the the airport. I was so fortunate to discover Strait Music! I brought my mini in and Kelli got right to replacing the strings while I walked around. I met Chris and he answered a few questions for me & I fell in love with hollow body. Kelli went above and beyond trying to adjust the neck that has seen much abuse in the overhead bins on airlines and got sounding better than the day I bought it! I also bought the hollow body and had it shipped up to New Hampshire. Prompt, professional service & great people. Thanks again & see you when I go through Austin again!
Dishonest people here. I decided to put them to the test. I took a recently overhauled clarinet in for review by their tech.. The tech acted as if it was never overhauled and needed $300 in repairs. This is DISHONEST! I would advise a trip down the road to Music & Arts. M&A is generic but at least they wont lie to your face!
I took a mixer to be repaired (channel 1, and only channel 1...very crackly when cable is touched.) They called and found nothing wrong with it. I brought it home and plugged it in...channel 1 is still EXACTLY the same. I payed good money, and it wasnt even looked at...obviously. Leads me to not trust them.
Strait up sucks. I have never been treated with such disrespect anywhere. I had a substantial cash in hand amount in search of a new guitar. So i found this amazing flame burst deluxe strat that was calling my name, i like to take my time with a guitar and know it intimately before i consider buying it. so i was in the amp room trying it out and after about 10 minutes the guy comes in ask if Im done demoing the guitar i said no and he said yeah you are just straight up told me to leave .Im still dumbfounded that this happened. I hope that guy get fired because they actually have some really nice guitars that i WOULD buy but not as long as that guys there. Even if i was loud he should have asked me to turn it down, i mean if you re gonna have things that make rock n roll you should understand that thats what people will do with them and dont be a jerk about it either.
Shout out to Strait Music and Dan M. In the amp department. Took my beloved Super in on Saturday afternoon after 3 and its repaired today before 3. That is great service. When all other shops had 4 to 6 week turn around or I just didnt get a good vibe from the shop. The tried and true home grown Strait came through!Clint thanks for keeping that vibe alive. Native Austinite to native Austinite thanks man! Thanks and it was good to be recognized by John Fannin as I entered the department. I aint nobody special so that was cool!John D. Beckerley
Im trying out acoustics and the guy comes in at closing and ask what I want to take. I said just some picks. He says I got 45 seconds. Then he grabs the guitar from me and tells me to get my sunglasses. I didnt realize this was a fire drill. Thanks for rushing me out the door ass hole
Shout out to Chris Cowart in Sales and Sean Haydon, the luthier/guitar tech. Both are very easy to work with and very knowledgable about everything to do with guitars. Sean is a graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, so he is really in tune with all aspects of Music.

2022-03-16What a great experience I had at Straight Music! I finally have a child that is going to join band at school, so we went there to explore the different instruments available. I went in explaining that we are going to buy eventually, but that today was about checking available options. There were two gentlemen who helped us and they couldnt have been more helpful or gracious. They patiently showed us seven different instruments. I did have to buy reeds for the woodwinds to properly test, but that was small price to pay. Absolute excellent customer service!! Go here to fulfill all your musical needs!

2022-05-01Big shout out to Eli and Sean! This guitar shop is a national treasure. Eli allowed me to come in with my guitar and test out amps, and was happy to answer any questions, and helped me decide between a few options. And Sean did an amazing job setting up my fiancees mach 1 and my KM6, was super friendly, very good about keeping in contact and accommodating me. This place also usually has a really good selection of left-handed guitars! Been coming here on and off since I was 15 and happy to keep coming back.

2022-05-09Easy 5 Stars for my most recent experience at Strait Music South. When youre truly in the market for something specific, the music store experience can sometimes feel like a pressure cooker. Any sizable investment takes due diligence and its often hard to do proper vetting of an instrument within the confines of a busy store. Over the past week, Strait has been the exception to that rule. Eli helped me with my purchase of a 12 string acoustic guitar and he was top notch to work with. He was patient and knowledgable, providing great information and insight throughout. I couldnt be more pleased with this transaction and my experience working with Eli. Theres a reason Strait has stood the test of time and why Ill always return. Highly recommended to anyone looking for upper echelon gear and service - and be sure to ask for Eli.

2022-03-30Ive been going to strait music for the entirety of my musical career and theyve always been great. I do miss their old instrument repair technician though. I feel the quality of repairs has shifted a bit since they put someone new in that role. A bit hesitant to bring my horn back for a cleaning and repairs but will give them one more shot

2022-05-07Brian at Strait Music South in Austin went out of his way to assist me on line in ordering exactly what I wanted and all on one order in one day and still managed to save me money AND aggravation. I have not seen such professional, quality attention to customer service in eleven years in the Austin area. I would recommend this shop over any!Save money, save sanity, shop Strait.Paul

2022-08-032 because staff is friendly and has some gear but the repair shop constantly lets me down. I’m about to send my horns to better than new. My $8000 horn gets put in the corner for a month and isn’t put on the list to be repaired and when I call in after a month of no information on price or time they tell me I have to go to the back of the list and wait till the end of October to get my horn back. So now after a month plus of waiting I have to go to another shop far from my home just so I can have it repaired in a timely manner. The issue isn’t so much getting delayed or the wait per se but the fact I get back logged because the guy forgot to put my order in for a month till I call back. I have had to bring my horns back in for re repairs after the fact or have to readjust the screws after the fact. I request synthetic cork and they refuse making me send the horn in more often than needed. I’ll just take them somewhere else and pickup reeds here.
