Only come here if you’re comfortable paying literally $20 a drink. ($15 base on all drinks plus auto 20% gratuity plus tax) There was no service or show to demand the auto gratuity, aside from a bunch of dry ice everywhere, which I assume would be included in their already elevated drink prices.I’m sorry, but I didn’t think the drinks were so elevated above their competitors on rainey to warrant the price tag. The drinks were good, but I would never pay $20 for one. And I only found out the cost after I ordered, so go figure.
Came from out of country and was advised to check this place out. Of all the stops we made over the weekend, this was the one where we had the least fun. Dont get me wrong, the drinks were outstanding which is why this review is getting a 3rd star, but that was pretty much were the positives ended. It was $17 USD per drink and an automatic gratuity of 20% was added despite me not being part of a large group. I can see this being a decent spot to impress a first date, but it was too loud for conversation, so Im not really sure what vibe theyre going for other than pretentious.
Great location and bar layout. The drinks were tasty. However, the matt hatter i ordered was listed at $10, and the drink my little sister ordered didnt have a price. Went to close out and our bill was $30 for two drinks!I highly doubt the drink she ordered was a $20 drink. Then the bar also had already placed a gratuity on our bill which I only caught because of how surprised I was at the price for two drinks.Wont be coming back.
Such a great vibe. Parking lot in the back was easy access. Great music, I was able to sit in the lounge area inside and the couches are really comfortable if you plan to visit for a few drinks with friends. The drinks were worth the prices and very well presented & delicious. I love the unique design of the bar and the lamps on the ceiling outside LOL. Very neat experience, I will definitely be back. 🤟🏽
Very, very cute and boojie upstairs cocktail place. Very small eats menu, at QR code, with inside and outside area.Very friendly staff though we did wait almost 10 min before someone took our drink order at the bar and half of the bartenders were wearing masks. Really great drinks, bottle service, age canned beer.
The Finer Side of DrinkingDuring SXSW the Rainey Street District was packed with people mostly trying to get into the bars with free food and drinks. I ended up entering one of the places but encountered shoulder to shoulder of people in line or just standing around enjoying the festivities. I could not take it anymore where I needed a place to have a drink and work, and remembered a bar with lamps hanging upside down from the ceiling. Twice I have walked up the stairs to see the lamps but quickly had to go back down because the people I was with kept walking down Rainey Street and need to catch up with them. The place was called The Tipsy Alchemist.I was never unable to see what was fully up there until this day where I was alone and went beyond the top of the stairs into this upside down world of the 70 Rainey building. I was able to get a closer look at the lamps hanging on the ceiling and the place seems not very busy in the early afternoon. A few people were staring at their laptops and I walked to the bar to figure out what to order. It all looked very fancy with a glistening bottle collection along the wall and a bartender who liked like he stepped out of GQ Magazine. He asked me what to make for me and he educated me that this was a place where concatenations were custom made for the customer. So I said I wanted a cold sweet citrus flavored drink. The Alchemist was like chef in action where I watched him freeze a glass in CO2 giving off a cold mist, grab a whole bunch of ingredients, and begin an elaborate mixing procedure. It was like watching a shell gamer with alcohol instead a ball. And finally after one more shake he poured a darkish brown substance into the frozen glass and topped it with a thin slice of blood orange.I was worried at first of what I got myself into but after one taste it was the best mixed drink I had in years. It had the perfect combination where it was not too sweet or tart. This personalized mixture was worth what I paid for it and carefully took it to a table on the balcony to enjoy it while looking down at the crowded bars below.Besides balcony seating there are a wide range of seating from tables, bar, couch, pillow chairs and etc.If on Rainey Street keep walking all the way down to experience this place.
Pretty crazy that we almost didn’t come here because the reviews said it was so overpriced. The drinks are $15 which is totally reasonable when you see how much effort goes into making them and how nice the ambiance is. If you’re looking for great drinks and a fun environment this is one of the best bars in Austin.
There is very bad security person. Very rude and aggressive , he is menace to society. Other folks are great, but this person just hushed and spills drinks on people . Please watch video from Friday to Saturday night 12:10 pm. You will understand , how rude and unprofessional this person. Thank god , we did not escalate the situation, with promise to ourselves to never come to this place.
Fun outdoor seating in a chic setting up off the main level of Rainey. Craft cocktails with the price tag. Ordered 2 IPAs that are texas local for $6, came canned but Definitely tasty.Tab total was 12.00 plus .99 tax and a pre-approved 20% tip... making the tab 15.39 for 2 canned beers and checking on us once.Kind of uppity vibe with an interesting mix of people including a middle aged couple making out to the dance club music mix at 4pm on a sunday lol.
Looks nice. Drinks look good. But service is awful. If you don’t tackle a bartender, you will never be served. Ten minutes after sitting down, still hadn’t cleared from last customers, and no bartender bothered to ask anyone in group of six for order or acknowledged existence.
One of my favorite bars in austin and definitely the best bar in Rainey. The atmosphere is a lot more chill than the other bars down the street. At the tipsy alchemist, you are able to enjoy a craft cocktail in a nice setting. The cocktails are pricey but completely worth it.
Great cocktails and the bartender was great. What I didnt appreciate was having an automatic gratuity of 20% added to my check and not have it be clear on the receipt and on the menu. You should always have it be clear that gratuity is added already at least on the menu. This one is on me but I didnt realize that 20% gratuity was already added to the charge and had tipped separately from that 20% charge. If I wanted to give a 40% tip, I would at least like to have some agency in this. Wish I could ask my credit card company for a refund for the additional tip I had given.Im pretty sure most people dont realize that gratuity is already added and double tip. It happened to my friends too.
The drinks here are absolutely phenomenal! I highly reccomend the Edison but which ever you try it will definitely be a unique experience! They are taking all the precautions they can for Covid-19 so I highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time, but its definitely worth the trip!
Really cool vibes here. It had a great selection of drinks and then even better spirits. Two things that kept me from giving 5 stars. First was I wanted some type of food and there was nothing. The second was some of the prices for the liquor were high compared to other bars for the same product. I get it, capitalism and all that but some mark ups where far above what I have ever paid. Great staff, good service, and if all you want is a drink then it is a good option. Just know you might be paying a little more than at other places if you know what you want in a drink.
Meh. Dry ice is flashy, but does not make it actually very sciency. Drinks were tasty, but expensive for what they were. Spot is nicely appointed, but service was too slammed so getting a drink took way too long. Also, it clearly stated when getting on their WiFi that if one didnt want to use that Facebook sign in there was a code, however, none of the servers knew the code and ended up having to ask the owner/manager.
I have never been this disappointed about a bottle service. My friends and I were quoted for a bottle that was $175 and then they charged me $400. We made sure that was the absolute charge or we would not get a bottle. When I brought this to the manager, rather than finding a solution to the miscommunication between the bottle service girl and us, he simply walked away. Nor does the receipt list the price of the bottle, or what we are being charged for.I find that extremely unprofessional on all fronts and if you go here, please be aware with what you are being charged, I’d hate for anyone who doesn’t have that kind of money in their pocket get taken advantage of and then punished based on a miscommunication. As a venue, bar, or restaurant, it is the merchant’s responsibility. to ensure all customers are satisfied.
This bar is a bit of a interesting mix. It’s on rainy street so attracts a lot of college students but the drinks and energy seem to want to be more of a sip and chill vibes. You never know what you’re gonna get when you go. The drinks though are innovative. Alice that works there is absolutely amazing and will discuss each drink with you. I would go on a non weekend night.
Went here for the UFC fight last night on a whim. Man I am glad we stopped in.Fun and intuitive cocktail menu. Drinks were so good and interesting. Although the bar was busy the staff went out of their way to check up on you when they saw your drink was getting low. Which means a lot to me. The ambiance and decor were very cool and modern. I would definitely recognize stopping by and checking this place out.Our bartenders John and Chris took great care of us.I see other reviews bashing the gratuity, I have no problem leaving 20% when the service was as spot on as it was.
While service can be quite slow this place makes extremely high quality drinks and I have personally never had a single thing drink-wise that wasn’t amazing. People that leave 3-4/5 stars simply because it’s not “their vibe” should have their reviews deleted. It’s on Rainey st, it’s going to be loud.
The patio is great and the mimosa deal is awesome, but thats were it ended for us.. We went for cocktails around brunch time because there were lots of TV and my husband wanted to find the US soccer match. We got seated and asked to put it on ESPN. A few minutes later it wasnt on, so he got up and asked at the bar. He found out they dont actually have cable and their subscription satellite feed didnt get the local ESPN channel that had the game. So not having the game was disappointing with so many tvs, but the worst was really that the whole 8 minutes or so we were finding out about the game, no one ever came to wait on us or even check in. So I never got to try the dollar mimosas because we left. We probably just got caught between servers or something.
The drinks were great, the service was great for most of our visit. Our original bartender was amazing, his name was either Tim or Tom, he was super funny and explained how the drinks were made we ordered. Even talked me into an egg cocktail! The end of our visit was incredibly awkward. We watched the manager curse at and embarrass our bartender. As former management I would never imagine speaking to an employee in such a volatile way in front of many guests.Very disappointing to see the staff treated that way and brought the whole mood down at the bar.
Service was nice but the drinks weren’t great for $15 each. The old fashioned tasted like well whiskey on the rocks and the straight from the horses mouth looked cool but tasted like a sweet Moscow mule with artificial flavors. Probably a great place to go hang out with friends for a night of drinking, but wasn’t quite what we were looking for.
Came here for a cocktail with friends, was amazed by the setting and location! Looked like a beautiful, fun new spot. So bummed our experience was completely awful.Had to go find a waitress after 15 min of waiting to order some drinks. We ordered one round, and were told “they didn’t have the ingredients” for the drinks we ordered. No problem! We would be happy to order something else, but they attempted them anyway and they tasted awful. We tried to give them back, and the bartender added ingredients to try and improve them instead. So we decided to head out, and my friend had an apple credit card (no numbers are visible on the card), the waitress said she had to take it back to the bar due to their not being any numbers on it, ran it 3 times, then said she needed another card instead. At this point the manager came out, angrily took the 2nd card and took it behind the bar and ran that one.The tab was only $55 and they charged an automatic 20% tip to the bill! Pretty sure this is illegal to do unless it’s parties of 8+ people. We had to dispute the 3X charges on the credit card later that night. Really disappointed in this place, from the poor service, simple transactional issues, and attitudes from the bar manager. Don’t let the fun atmosphere fool you, and take your business elsewhere!
For my first time being there it wasn’t the best experience. I met a friend that was already there and wasn’t greeted friendly at all. I loved the atmosphere and music but did not make up for the automatic 20% gratuity that they add for bartenders that do not deserve it at all!!! I asked for a coke for my girlfriend (that is pregnant) and was served with a dirty highball glass that must of had some sort of garnish that wasn’t washed properly and made me feel concerned for me unborn baby. I then requested to speak with the manager and was told from him that he could “get me a new coke” I replied with my concerns and was just treated as if the answer to my concerns was simply just a new coke. I asked for his corporate number and he claimed there wasn’t one. So Patrick Ruby I hope that there is a corporate number and hope you do get this information so that when situations like this do happen you can be more professional!
I came here with a group of 6. The atmosphere is cool, but the first thing we noticed is that the drinks just do not taste good. They have a lot of alcohol in them which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but I prefer not to feel like I’m drinking straight gasoline. Then when half of our party was at the bar getting drinks, which takes a while, a security guard came over and aggressively said “if I don’t see the rest of your party here soon then I’m taking this table”. We explained they’re right inside, but he said he would give us a couple minutes and then take it. Later on, before the place closed my friends ordered some last drinks. As soon as they sat down with them, the same guy came over and said “I’m going to need to watch you guys chug these drinks and leave”. I’m a waitress so I understand working in the service industry and wanting to go home, but my friends were JUST served their drinks and were asked to chug these cocktails that were like 90% alcohol. Literally why continue to serve alcohol if you want to close up?? So if you decide to come here just prepare yourself to fight off a security guard every 30 minutes
Went expecting science inspired cocktails and left feeling bamboozled. Doesn’t seem to be like the Dallas location.First, they wanted to sit some random people at our table of two. Pretty sure that is against pandemic guidelines.Second, the service is awful and they automatically tack on an unmerited 20% tip. It took 10 minutes to waive down a server to order and we just gave up on ordering another round of drinks since nobody seemed to be interested in providing any service. We couldn’t even get some napkins for the sweating drinks. Nothing motivates me more to write review than when a business offers terrible service on a party of 2 and decided to reward themself with an automatic tip.Lastly, the drinks are mediocre. The cocktails were no different than anything you would get at any chain restaurant. There was no alchemy that I could see or taste. The drinks certainly didn’t make up for the lack of service either.I would not recommend this place.
Was very excited to try this place out. That excitement was short lived - expect to wait 40+minutes for someone to even acknowledge your existence…especially if you’re a POC. Stuck up and unfriendly bartenders. Brought up service issue to other staff member who could care less about our bad experience and just rolled her eyes.
Would have given this a 5 star if it weren’t for the their thief of staff.I went here on a slow Thursday night, maybe one other couple in the bar. I had gotten my drinks made by a female staff member.First off, this is the tipsy alchemist and revolves around cool drinks made in a specialty fashion. She did none of that (I know because I had come here a few weeks before and one of the gentleman made great cocktails so I decided to take a friend here)Now get this, not only did this woman make mediocre drinks, she also auto-grat 2 drinks and not tell me (no big deal 20%). but now, I just saw she DOUBLE TIPPED herself. I kept my drink receipt because she gave me a bad vibe and I never do that.TERRIBLE staff. That woman should lose her job.
Im not sure if its just at night but when you sit down and open up the menu you find out theres a $30 per person minimum tab. I wouldnt have gone in had the host told us at the front. The cocktails are pretty good though. Musics kind of loud but otherwise a nice place.
I always have a great time here! I usually always get The Lily, highly recommend. I surprised my friend with bottle service for her birthday here last week and she had an amazing time! The waitstaff were friendly, fun, and attentive, it made the experience 100x better. Thanks Tipsy!
Drinks are very average and overpriced. $15 for all cocktails. They require minimum $30/person order, and force a 20% mandatory service charge. The service sucked, took 10+ min every time we needed a waiter to get something. Music is extremely loud, so its impossible to talk.
The atmosphere is absolutely great. Chill, chic, laid back. Has a great view of Rainey from where you’re sitting at. Drinks were good and the service was pretty decent for the amount of people who were there. The problem is that this establishment purposely gave us the wrong drinks. By that, I mean I ordered a blanco tequila but end up being charged for an añejo, or if you order a regular Hennessy and Coke, they’ll give you Hennessy VSOP. They didn’t have certain drinks on hand as well. So be very aware of what you’re dealing with. Also, there is an automatic 20% gratuity charge. Not a bad setting at all, just sort of sketchy business practices.
Friendly staff with talented bartenders that are just as much a joy to watch making your drink as it is a joy to drink it. Very creative across the board. Warm yet slick ambience. We ordered Two Tone Paint Jobs and they were so good and so not the same old same old that we had to go another round even though we were pressed for time. Highly recommended.
Whatever you do don’t get the craft cocktails...worst I’ve ever had in my life. Seems they use cheap boxed juices or something, can’t tell. Told waiter and my drink was taken and thrown away for another cocktail..still charged! So tacky! If you’re going to charge these prices use fresh ingredients please!
My go-to bar when Im in austin for suree!! Went Halloween night, music was great and the drinks were soooo good!! Our server was so nice! Unfortunately we didnt get her name but staff is very neat and nice. The restrooms are gender neutral, however each stall is like a small room, there is no space between stalls. There is also a restroom attendant cleaning right after use!!! And the bussers clean as they walk by you, so your table is never messy or full!! I honestly loved it!! ( I only drank alcohol while there, I didnt have any food)
Wanted to like this place as it is a cool location and we always are down for a craft cocktail. Unfortunately the drinks were average with a premium price tag, the vibe was douchey, and the experience was pretty lame. I’d say the only worse bar on Rainey is Unbarlievable.
Was not impressed by the weak drinks and cranky bartender today. Not to mention the drink I ordered was listed as $15 on the menu but I was charged $19 and some change. This place is not worth the hype. Another table next to us also expressed their unhappiness while my friend took their picture.
I dont even know where to start. Ive been going to alchemist tipsy since the first time it open doors on Rainey street, in Austin. Im a Rainey SundayFunday regular and been going to Rainey for years. So when alchemist tipsy opened, I was among the first people to go check it out. Every time I had visitors in town, I would take them down to this bar to the extent that Im kinda a regular there and most waiters and waitresses actually recognizes me. However the way me, my friend and his girlfriend were treated by the manager this past Saturday it was sickening and Im so embarrassed even to the thought thta I go there at least twice a week and I had been convincing my friend to go check it out too. We were literally escorted out in an embarrassing manner for refusing to give up a chair to a group of white patrons. The waiter pulled the chair for me so I could join my friends, but the rude manager wouldnt even allow us to say anything or even listen to the waiter who did it. We were beneath him Its unfortunate that I will never go back to this place that I was excited about when I heard that it was coming to Austin because I had visited this same establishment in Dallas and had a good time
Dont bother coming here, especially on the weekends. It is insanely loud, you cant even hear your friends who are right next to you.We ordered a round of shots for our group of 8 people. They only brought us 7. Not a huge deal, we just had to wait longer. Also asked for some water at the same time we ordered the shots, and that never came.
Came here early evening on Saturday 6/19/21. Vibe and overall feel was fine. Drinks are on the pricey side and mandatory 20% tip is annoying but that’s not the primary reason for my low rating. The garnishes for the drinks were on the bar top uncovered in drink glasses instead of being covered and although I’m unsure as to the health code requirements in TX, what I am sure of was there were dozens of ants and gnats on all the garnishes. So if you had a drink here, you may have ate some insects as a bonus. I took a video as evidence and I pointed it out to the bearded bartender with both arms tattooed (didn’t get his name) and he shrugged me off and didn’t even replace the garnishes. I’ve provided a screenshot from my video as I am unable to upload the full video to Google reviews. I’m happy to provide in another format if needed/asked.
Nice spot with relax setting. Drinks are really good, well crafted and made right in front of you. They have outside seating with portable heaters for when its cold outside. Drinks can be a little pricier than other spots but the quality and mixture is worth it. Good place to chill with friends.
Terrible Service sat there for 15 min and no one came by. When someone finally came by they passed me up and helped the couple right next to us and still ignored us on the way back to the bar. Do not recommend they will not not serve you! Extremely disappointed will not come back!
I guess all of R. Street has become over priced and very touristy. If you’ve gone to this area multiple years ago, don’t expect it to have the same local vibe.Drinks +$17 each. Nice cocktail. The cowboy drink’s glass was A+ (along with the drink itself). Espresso martinis were good but not the best I’ve had.

2022-05-04If I could rate the bartender separately I would as he did exceptional work during our visit and deserves 5 stars and the automatic gratuity plus some. The creativity on the drink menu is superb! The fun twist to typical drinks is entertaining. I was expecting a little more from the establishment as far as decor, style, physical menus, and cleanliness. My opinion is that bars have evolved a lot and in doing so now charge a premium for drinks. The drinks arent the only thing that should increase. The level of customer service, attentiveness, attention to details, and upkeep of an establishment should raise to the level of the prices of the drinks. With bars being so popular owners of these establishments can get away with it, but maybe if more consumers demand better there will be a shift in what is acceptable. In general the service industry has become expectant of gratuity and it seems to be creating a problem regarding quality of customer service. If a tip is supposed to be given based on service provided then the consumer should be able to choose the amount based on the service. When theres an automatic gratuity theres a potential for a lack of motivation for an individual to want to provide outstanding service. This happened during our first visit and with other individuals during this visit. If an owner of an establishment thinks it employees deserve to be rewarded and compensated for their hard work then the owner should pay them the amount they think theyre worth. The gratuity should be an added bonus and not an automatic on everything sold at the establishment.

2022-06-18Loved this place! First off it’s Texas, it’s hot. They have lots of fans, porta coolers and portable air conditioners. The vibe is laid back and they have good music playing. The drinks are spot on, lots to choose from and lots of specialty drinks. I definitely recommend this place!

2022-03-15An interesting place to stop in if youre strolling the Rainey Street District. Very unique modern-evocative specialty drinks served in a trendy “New Austin” setting. It can be a little loud, crowded and busy inside and around the inside bar at times. Although the second story outside seating areas are open and much more quiet for conversing with friends.

2022-06-27Amazing vibes, music and great drinks!! My fav is living the island life very coconuty and mild enough for me to enjoy 1 drink and drive back! They have a huge variety of drinks , they are about $17 per drink, expect it about $22-$25 per drink after taxes and tips.

2021-12-13One of the best espresso martinis Ive ever had! Really fun vibe and excellent cocktails. Loud music and almost a club vibe but great energy and service. Really nice interior with some lounge seating and a decent sized patio.

2021-07-31The Tipsy Alchemist is a loud packed bar on Rainey! Not my type of scene with the loud thumping music, more of a club scene, which is why it didn’t get 5 stars. The Edison was my favorite of the drinks we got which included Violet You’re Turning Violet and The Mad Hatter. They also ha e large shareable drinks that some table got, they were definitely feeling the effects.

2021-08-16Ambiance and atmosphere is great! The service however, not so much. This is a club style bar/eatery right on Rainey street. Staff does not acknowledge that you are seated and waiting. It took them a good 20 minutes to come to our table and take the orders. Good place to go with friends and have a few drinks while enjoying the surroundings and music. But that’s about all.
