Very nice staff. Helped me figure out what I wanted because all the coffee sounded good and it was my first trip in. The lady that helped me recommended their cold brew and it was REALLY good. Strong just like she promised it would be, a nice way to get the day started. I will definitely be returning to try the food and maybe take them up on their bottomless coffee as well.
I had the Irish cream cold foam with the cold brew and a dirty chai here - both very delicious!I also got the raspberry bar, also lovely. They have plenty of seating inside and outside - great for a quick bite or something more slow paced. And as the name of the store suggests, solid cookies!Great atmosphere here, and I will definitely stop by here again when I come to visit Bastrop in the future.
One of the few bakeries to meet my exacting standards. I usually dont like bakeries but do LIKE this one! Would return here. Loved their Chai Latte especially! Really good! Glad to see they had a Paleo/Gf cookie as an option for someone like me who likes less sugary options. Thanks so much!
Boy were we happy to see this lil coffee shop open! It was 100 degrees in Bastrop so we were looking for some iced beverages. After looking at the menu, we decided we were hungry too 😜 Tough Cookie is mostly vegan and has WAY more than cookies. We got the MayBLT, the veggie sausage filled pretzel bread with melted butter and mustard, the hatch pepper and cheese scone, cinnamon roll with icing and a sprinkle cookie. Oh yeah, AND the peanut butter chocolate krispy treat... we were in heaven! Sadly, there’s no indoor seating right now (in fact, one of the bakers came out from the back to tell me to put my mask back on when I took a sip of the coffee I ordered— what a ‘tough cookie!!’ 😜) but the patio was shaded and my family and I were more than comfortable and willing to sit outside. I cannot wait to visit Bastrop again so I can try more of what the Tough Cookie menu has to offer!
When I first moved to the area I Google searched vegan eats and Tough Cookie came up. I was so surprised and excited to find a place my kids and I can find yummy treats! I was not disappointed. This has become our favorite hang out spot and place to go for snacks, treats, coffees and cool, unique gifts and art made by locals! We love the owners and the emoyees. The location is perfect too... a great stop on the way to the park, or from the library. ❤
I did not like their coffee. They said they make their chocolate sauce in house so ordered the mocha and it was not good. It tasted old and had a weird flavor. The chocolate chip cookie was awful it taste like salt. The inside of the bakery had stickers and other things for sell that had obscenities all over them. I found this very distasteful for a business that is supposed to cater to all types. I would not take a kid here. The trail mix cookie was the only good thing about my experience.
Adorably local! This place is the most adorable little hole-in-the-wall cafe you could imagine. Literally everything is local, “reclaimed”, and cobbled-together. Everyone passing through Bastrop should stop here at least once! It’s a bit hard to find. I recommend parking in the lot a few blocks over and walking over.Note: They have a little kitchen playset for kids!
The place has a nice vibe and was playing pretty good music but the lack of tables and chairs made it seem really vacant. The menu was also a bit sloppy and there was a long wait for a simple drink with only one person in front of me. The coffee was pretty good and I really appreciated that the cashier took the time to see if their oatmilk was gluten free. It wasnt but the effort to find out counts. In terms of their baked goods Im pretty everything is still baked there so I wasnt ready to risk the gluten exposure. Overall the place has massive potential but could use some polish for sure.
I happened upon this place and am so grateful I did. The rustic home made charm of this place is punctuated by the ever changing display of local artisans on the walls.I was dubious of vegan bakery items, fearing they would be low on flavor, but have found the opposite to be true. The service is great and the people are so friendly. It is a great place to unwind after a day of shopping downtown.
Fantastic and creative meal options here. I had a Rosie Palmer (lemonade with Hibiscus mint tea) and a really great quiche which was mushrooms, broccoli and Gouda cheese with a shredded sweet potato base instead of a pie crust, making it a gluten-free and Ooh so delish dish. Oh and, cant forget the avomash on pretzel bread side. To Die.
These guys are a well hidden gem located just beside the river in Bastrop Texas. Surrounded by many shops and just around the corner from Main St., Tough Cookie is a perfect blend of artisan coffee and vegan cuisine. Now, mind you Im not vegan in any way. But the food is so good that I traverse into that cuisine almost every day because of these people. I love them btw. They pride themselves on becoming your friend before you become their customer. They usually have my cup ready before I even get to the counter. Great coffee, great food, great people, great atmosphere, and last but not the least, great internet. If you are in Bastrop Texas, you should stop in. Oh, try the vegan homemade ice cream. Its the bomb!
I work just across Alley B from this gem. First, for those who want/need vegan or gluten-free options, they have a nice selection. Second, while an Avocado Mash isnt haute cuisine, theirs is so good, you wont want to make your own again (tip: get it on pretzel bread, yum!). They have a terrific selection of baked goods every day, and their all day menu has something for everyone (my personal fave: their quiches). Top it all off with friendly staff and reasonable prices, and its hard to go wrong.
Lets just say, WOW! The food was hands down amazing, the friendly staff made the experience even better. I definitley will be eating here again. I suggest the biscuits and gravy and their Cinnamon Roll was so darn tasty. Vegan options were on point. Thanks for letting us slide in last minute! Your bakery is perfect!!
Your restrictions were understandable to the extent they were practical. Standing behind the tape was a little far to operate, but ok. Could not understand order taker or be understood so it was all difficult. Music coming from kitchen didn’t help. Sandwich was dry and bread stale, served with pretzels. Ok.Mostly though, would have appreciated a hello and a little friendliness from anybody on your staff. Have been here before and didn’t have this problem so giving the benefit with stars. We really wanted to patronize your establishment as there aren’t many restaurants around that serve healthy food, and we are plant based.A healthy, less militaristic and welcoming attitude would have gone a long way. Tough cookie is a perfect name for this disappointing experience.
Just ok. If youre really needing a vegan/ vegetarian option its great. Leaves much to be desired. The biscuits and gravy lacked flavor. I also got a pretzel braut and it was extremely greasy. The best thing I had was a snickerdoodle cookie. And even that was 6/10. I hope that the recipes improve because its really great having vegan/ vegetarian options in a smaller town like bastrop. Dont think Ill go back. Id rather make the drive to Austin.
Stopped in this morning for some delicious vegan biscuits and gravy, and a couple vegan cookies for the road to Dallas. The staff was very friendly and the store was well kept. Definitely recommend stopping in if you find yourself in Bastrop. :0) great service and delicious food!!
I always enjoy my experience at Tough Cookie! The staff is super friendly and the owners are an amazing couple. My favorite things to eat are the Curry Chickpea Wrap, Avocado Mash and Ginger Molasses cookie. Their coffee is delicious and was my life line when a worked at a nearby restaurant. The best part is that they are a local business! Support local!
Tough Cookie Bakery catered a bridal shower for us this weekend and it was absolutely perfect! We had a lot of dietary restrictions (soy free, gluten free, nut free) but there were options for everyone. Jennie delivered everything right on time and it all tasted AMAZING. Everyone at the shower asked were we got all the delicious goodies. We will be visiting them again if we’re ever back in Bastrop.
Cozy, cute, rustic, eclectic, and above all YUMMY!!! Wonderful people offer delicious homemade goodness. My kiddos love the fresh made ice cream and sugar cookies with sprinkles. I LOVE the vegan peanut butter fudge. My hubby raves about their coffees. Everything from meals to a snack or treat. Always something scrumptious on their menu. It’s a must try local favorite.
This place is amazing! Their rotating weekly specials and menu options are so good and their bakery items are to die for! Seriously, try the cinnamon roll or the peanut butter chocolate rice krispy bar! I moved from Austin where theres vegan options at every corner to Bastrop and my husband and I are so thrilled to have this spot in town to get our vegan goodies. Before COVID when we first moved to town we loved sitting inside and enjoying a treat in the cozy atmosphere, but the patio and recently added picnic tables outside are nice to sit at as well. Friendly staff and perfect location. I cant say enough good things about Tough Cookie!
We came in 5 minutes before they closed after walking the riverwalk and the 4 of us were so happy to find a place with reasonably priced food. Everything was absolutely amazing, but by far the best were the gluten free raspberry oatmeal bar and the best rice krispy bar I have ever had in my life! Cant wait to come back and have some more stuff! Thank you so much!😁
Went here yesterday. They have piled all the inside furniture up so that there is nowhere to sit. Theres a sign saying that you cannot use the restroom. Theyve got a strip of tape on the floor that youre supposed to stand behind. The tape is far enough back that you cant reach to give them your credit card or to pick up your order. This means you have to cross the tape at some point. So why is it there? Why are they even open? We were the only customers and we didnt bother to order in this very unwelcoming place. I hope they get some common sense. What they should really do is just lock their door and make it an order at the window type of setup.
By far the best original coffee shop in town! Weekly visits here are a must and when I need a place to focus & get my mental groove on for work, it’s the place for me. Or just swinging by with the family to get some delicious treats! The employees are super friendly and the owners are well-respected in our little community.
I’m vegan, and normally I would give all restaurants selling plant based food 4-5 stars. I had the biscuits and gravy and the blt and both were very very bland. Not much flavor at all. Callies kitchen in Tomball has the best bs and g you can find. Really hard for anyone to compete with them. Hopefully the menu is better the next time though, I would go back and give another chance.
This place has some delicious gluten free pastries. Ive tried the raspberry oatmeal bar and it was delicious. Also tried the house chai, and unfortunately that was not as good. The flavor was mild and I could mostly taste milk & water with a hint of chai. There was plenty of outdoor seating and the barista was friendly.
WOW WOW WOW!!!! I attend CRCA high school in bastrop and I always love to walk here and get some great food! I have always loved everything they offer especially the mango fizz 🥭 drink. Every experience I have ever had at this place has been filled with kind people and great food. 10/10 food and 10/10 staff. Love this place so much!!!
This is a bakery that happens to offer coffee. We enjoy visiting smaller towns and eating local and trying local coffee shops. We ask for their recommendations as we tend to be surprised and impressed. Not this time. Slow drip was subpar for my spouse. I’m a little different as I don’t like the taste of coffee. Typically the person will offer a secret concoction. Disappointed that the recommendation was either a latte or mocha. For coffee, I would choose elsewhere. For GF or vegan pastries, I’m confident it would be good.
I live in Austin, and this is hands down my favorite place to eat. There is nothing I have tried that I don’t love. From the drinks (watermelon basil angus Fresca is a favorite) to food (May BLT on pretzel bread) to bakery (raspberry bars, molasses cookies, pb and chocolate bars are on my heavy rotation). It’s local. It’s vegetarian. It’s got a great atmosphere. It makes my heart happy 💖
The organic pretzels was delicious. They made a really good almond milk latte. Yummy cinnamon rolls. I got pretzels to go, they were so good! Made in house. Love all the organic options. Good vegan and vegetarian options. Pretzels were $2.25 each and a good size. Cinnamon rolls were big but pricey $4.50. Coffees reasonable prices and competitive in price.
Good food for being vegan, but definitely not as good as a regular bakery. Just tried 5 different things from here and none of them were as good as a high end regular bakery. Also they definitely go out of their way to force their veganism on you. I would eat here again of I had to, but not if I could avoid it.
Ridiculously nice and friendly staff that make you feel right at home :) food is too good for words, you just have to experience it yourself! and unlike other gourmet vegetarian places the prices are really good! the atmosphere here is very homey and rustic and cute and i love spending time here, they also sell crafts from local artists. 5 million points to house tough cookie!
Tough Cookie Bakery is a wonderful local treasure. Their fresh on the spot made food is delicious and beautiful. For those with dietary or lifestyle choices, most are vegan, GF, or paleo or a combination. The cinnamon rolls are huge and delicious. The African Peanut stew is filling, and it comes with a generous slice of their bread. Come for a cookie, and leave as a friend. Shop Local. Shop Small.
I love this place! Its a great place to get some delicious vegan foods & dessert, but they have non-vegan items as well. The staff are all really nice down to earth people and theres a little play kitchen area for small kiddos. The covered porch offers nice seating in good weather too.
For being gluten and dairy free my experience was pretty awful. As someone who chooses not to eat particular ingredients, I sought out Tough Cookie because they offered baked goods that catered to my lifestyle. Literally the worst customer service. I would never never go back. First of all when you walk in for some baked goods and coffee, IF there is someone there to greet you - THEYRE RUDE. Secondly, if you ask any questions, THEYRE ANOYED. Third, if they feel you are not welcome, they will ask you to leave. I regret spending any of my money here once I learned they asked my 65 year old FATHER not to come back when he was a regular customer, also CHOOSING to drive to Bastrop like myself, and give money to this business. SICKENING. No reply needed OWNERS!
Love everything about Tough Cookie! Great cold brew coffee and their peanut butter rice krispie treats are my fav :) The owners are so nice and have created a really inviting space. Its easy to pop in for a quick coffee but also comfortable to hang out and get some work done.
I always love coming here because the food is amazing and bottomless coffee!!! Bruh... anyone that reads this and hasnt been is missing out. Think of it as like a cool, cozy Austin cafe but with less people (not crowded) a friendly staff, freshly cooked food and baked goods that are awesome-salsa like grandmas cookies. The decoration is pretty cozy, cool, hip whatever you want to call it it just makes you feel comfortable like if you are at home. At least that is how I feel when I go.And!!! Their guac tastes just like Chipotles, exactly like it, but not as expensive 👍🏻🥑
Tried this place for brunch. I didn’t care for the quiche and while it was -maybe- made there at some point, I’m pretty sure it was not fresh but frozen/reheated; $6 for a very average slice. The rice crispy bar was $3.00....pretty outrageous, but tasty. For vegans there isn’t much choice in Bastrop, I guess.
I really like the vibe here. The coffee was good and hot, the service was friendly. The decor is very nifty, reminds me of home.#letsguide #vegetarianfriendlyThey have a ton of vegetarian options which is really cool to find in Bastrop. Not that Im a vegetarian I love my red meat but I do have friends who are vegetarian and every now and then I try and eat a little more on the leafy side so I dont put on too much weight.
I am so into this place. Just moved to the area and I have found my go to spot for coffee and baked goods. They also serve food, ice cream. They sell freshly baked loaves of bread and do custom baked goods. We commissioned them for a vegan strawberry cake with chocolate icing. It was delicious and the baker, Jennie was communicative and so helpful. Totally worth outsourcing to save my sanity. The vibe is casual and down to earth. There is even a little area for kids to play while you sip on something delish.
Very cute little locally owned, family start up. Delicious coffe, fresh bread to-go, large variety of yummy pastries or more substantial food with vegetarian and gluten free options.. most that you can barely tell are just that. (I follow neither of those diets).Local art up on the wall is a nice touch, as id a small kids corner.
Very cute coffeehouse/bakery/cafe with some food options for those interested in paleo, vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free eating. A nice place with great coffee, friendly & sweet people, and comfy, hometown atmosphere. And theres a small corner playspace for small children that wont stay put! Its a new favorite of ours, tucked in the Historic Bastrop area.
Way more than a bakery, with vegan options, and seating outside on the porch... came for lunch after a race and all the food we had (Hot Mess, Quiche of the Day, Oatmeal, egg and cheese biscuits were delicious, esp the side dish of the salty Avo-mash! Green tea, dirty Chai were the tasty drinks.) Add this place to your list if youre in Bastrop!
The Organic Pretzel is killer! Followed up with a Raspberry Bar and a Snickerdoodle and Im a happy camper. Im not vegan or a vegetarian , but you dont have to be to enjoy good food. Dont be scared, fellas!Polite service and an extremely peaceful porch. I may just become a regular.
Ever find something that’s been there a while but you didn’t even know it, but now that you found it, you can’t contain your excitement and you’re scared to let go because it might disappear? That’s how I felt when I found this place.I’m frustrated that I went so long without knowing it was here! The name is deceiving. I think they’ve done a poor job of marketing, because there’s so much good here that isn’t reflected in the name, & I’ve NEVER seen this place advertised. If you’re a vegetarian or vegan, everything is 1 or the other! ♥️ “So what, I can find vegetarian baked goods anywhere.” But wait, there’s more! They serve breakfast, soups, quiche, BLT’s, grilled cheese, brats, cookies, cinnamon rolls, peanut butter rice crispy bars topped with chocolate (I had 1 of these, they’re incredible), & many more dishes & baked goods I can’t wait to try. Along with a full coffee menu, lemonade, & tea! And they have awesome hours compared to most other comparable places in the area. It’s also in a great location, right next to Copper Shot Distillery & Neighbors.
For only five, yes FIVE dollars, an Americano and toast is actually two FRESHLY ground and tenderly pulled shots of Ruta Maya Espresso and three thick hunk slices of chewy homemade whole grain beer bread slathered in butter and beautiful Raspberry preserves. This is absolutely my new morning ritual. I sipped coffee and listened to Jeff Buckley over the stereo. How can you beat that? There are a ton of baked goods and coffee options here and it looks like some sandwich options in the near future. Do yourself a favour, and try this place out on a lazy morning or before work if you have some time.
I once bought a loaf of jalapeno cheddar pretzel bread from Tough Cookie with the intention of giving it to my new neighbor as a welcome-to-the-neighborhood gift. I am ashamed to say that I ate it all by myself and never took even a crumb of it to my neighbor. I regret nothing.

2022-03-26When traveling the roads of Texas some of the coolest places are the small towns in between the cities. This little spot in Bastrop was a great discovery. Serious about their desserts and coffee. Nice atmosphere and friendly service. I’d imagine this place packed in summer season. Worth a stop for rest and recharge of coffee and sweets.

2022-06-14Lovely little coffee shop in Bastrop. The staff was very friendly, patient, and helpful. The vibe/ atmosphere is very calm and welcoming. I came here once but other members of my family came a few times over the week we were in Bastrop. The whole menu is vegetarian, with plenty of gluten free and vegan options as well. We ordered a handful of menu items and they were all wonderful- half order of biscuits and gravy, a biscuit with peanut butter and jam, and peanut soup. I also had my usual London Fog with oatmilk and it was perfect. My mom raved about the quiche. Cute atmosphere and some little boutique type souvenirs to buy as well. Will definitely be back!

2022-04-10Check this local shop out! I had the Dirty Chai, Queish, & guacamole toast. Everything was very good & the atmosphere is inviting to hangout with friends or just to catch up on some reading. To top it all off, the customer service was so great, they really know how to make people feel welcomed.

2022-05-29Friendly welcoming environment. Loved all the treats they had to offer. The strawberry cake tasted really fresh and their lemonade taste nothing like the artificial kind, it the perfect drink for a hot summer. Worth the stop.

2021-10-10My vegetarian gf gives them 5!I give them a 5 for trying. I didnt find the food all that great, but Im also not vegetarian so what do I know? 🤷♂️Seems like in a world of non vegetarian/vegan options this is a shining beacon. The atmosphere is FANTASTIC by the way, love the patio overlooking Neighbors Kitchen, you feel all tucked away and cozy.Would echo what other reviewers said and that they didnt seem very welcoming, but idk, Im not looking to be friends with my cashiers....all-in-all Id go back again just for the atmosphere.

2021-11-13Very cute local bakery with a lot of character! We only had the cookies and ice cream (sweet tooth!), and they were delicious!A lovely stop on our way through Bastrop.

2022-07-17Very nice place and staff, 100%, but, for my taste, in the effort to be dairy free, vegan, and gluten free, as much as possible, they have lost sight of what most people expect items to taste like at a bakery. If you want healthy, you dont normally eat carbs, much less, bakery treats. The chocolate chip cookies had a weird taste, but the blueberry lemon scone, was soft, mushy, and not sweet as expected in a scone of any flavor. It was not worth the calories, I threw it away.

2022-05-16We found Tough Cookie after going to a nearby place the night before for dinner. After looking up the menu we decided we had to give it a try the next day and were rewarded with an amazing breakfast. I got the Hot Mess and my wife got the breakfast biscuit sandwich with vegan sausage and they were outstanding. We also got lattes and a scone which did not disappoint. Its a place you gotta go if youre in the Bastrop area.
