Possibly the best nachos on earth! We sat on the TV side at the bar and had fantastic service. Ceviche was excellent and was a great portion for 2 to share. Our server suggested the ribeye with the nachos and it was absolutely perfect. They even allowed us to have beans on only one half of the plate. Highly recommend.
Wow what a historic restaurant, in business 85 years! Delicious ceviche and enchilada plates. The former owner Mr. Dan Davidson was an incredible storyteller and so very courteous. The current owner and staff are all about hospitality and great customer service! Cant say enough great things about the food and atmosphere here. Definately going back.
Fish sandwich was nothing more than a thin frozen patty heated up , and the onion rings were bland at best . Made us wear a mask to go literally 5 feet to a table , No mask mandate , completely ridiculous. . Food was the worst we have had so far in the valley. McDonald’s has a better fish sandwich.
What a great atmosphere. The restaurant is very small and personal. However, the food makes up for it! Best delicious Chicken Chalupas that Ive tried in a restuarant. Fully loaded with beans, grilled chicken, fresh lettuce, tomatoes and cheese. Ask for a side of salsa. Adds greatly to the plate. Also, theyre known to serve up a delicious burger. My husband orders it all the time.
Hadnt been here in a while. Staff is great, always very kind. Place is always clean. They sanitize often and require masks, which is a plus for us because it means we can bring our baby in more comfortably. You can never go wrong with the Nachos deluxe, tampiquena or Buffalo sandwich. Fajita in any platter is super soft and great tasting!
Hadnt been to the V in a while and was very disappointed. Nobody could ever top the Vs onion rings until now. They were completely different and nasty. The Burger was nothing how it used to be. Service was not good but I guess I was somewhat grateful that they had workers in the 1st place. I hope they didnt change their enchiladas nor fajita nachos deluxe.
What. The. Entire. Eff.Why was this place so good!?This is all I think about, how heavenly this food is.Watch out for tubs over here because Im going back for seconds!!Otherworldly! Also the wait staff was perfect and attentive! Just all around amazing experience!Well done yall!!
I visit this location my husband and I order the fajita with charro beans and rice. The portion was not good at ALL. I cant understand how they are busy with customers when their food is not good. Their wasnt any effort on the presentation it looked like someone had just thrown the food in the plate. Wont be visiting this location ever.
This restaurant is always clean, comfortable, and welcoming. The staff is super friendly and the service is great. I had the grilled shrimp tacos... best EVER! If youre looking for a delicious meal the Vermillion is one place you can always be satisfied no matter what you order.
The Vermilion is a wonderful family and friends place. The food is varied and of good quality; although it is listed as Mexican there is some standard fare such as fish and vegetables offered. Atmosphere is very pleasant and lighting is muted, not garish. Just an all around good choice for dining when you are not sure where to go 😊
Im so disappointed with the quality of the food. Shrimp was too old smelled like too. I can’t believe they would even let that leave the kitchen. You are losing customers by trying to save your inventory. The cheese that was used for the nachos was the lowest quality, probably not even made with milk at all. The Wick cheese is even better. Message to the new owner, you need to improve the quality of the food get some tips some the previous I am saying this with so much respect. Customer service was amazing thank you flor for that. THE FOOD WAS HORRIBLE !
Excellent Mexican/American restaurant in a sport-bar type setting. They have tasty Mexican options such as tacos and enchiladas as well as American choices such as chicken fried steak. Wide range of appetizers too, including standard chips and salsa. The tacos were excellent with tender meat, and the refried beans were very well done. Also, beer options were good and the place as a whole is very well priced. A dinner for two typically will be below $40 including drinks. Will definitely come back here once Im around.
Friendly and truly customer service focused. They were absolutely the BEST staff weve encountered in five years of wintering in South Texas. Hand breaded on premises onion rings were a hit - as was the Mexican food platter with enchiladas. Food was served hot and promptly and the portions were generous and priced fairly.
This place use to be a great place to take the family, Today was the first time I took my son and my daughter, the service and food were horrible, I regret boasting about it to my kids. I asked someone I know what happened to this place apparently they changed owners 5 years ago. Wow! It only took them 5 years to destroy decades of great service, a great ambiance and amazing food. Oh and a Brownsville gem. To quote our waiter “nachos no bueno” 🤣🤣
Had the fish tacos. Nice presentation.Oil dripping out of them. Reheated frozen fish cut in small pieces. Side of beans were very salty. My friend had the beef enchiladas. Very little mined pieces of meat. Smothered in a salty red sauce. Refried beans loaded with grease. Hard tasteless rice. Disappointed I thought the tacos would be filled with fresh chunks of fish. Paid for extra beef on the enchiladas but still a very small portion of meat. Surprised that its restaurant yet gas stations have better tasting better quality food. Comment is meant to be productive so that the chefs get replacedand or food gets bettter.
Food was good but we felt too much unnecessary hostility from the cashier due to mask requirement. We all had masks but as we were walking out the kids did not have them on, were were sitting on the table next to the door...we respect the rules and there was no need for her to be so upset. Thinking twice about going back.
Always good food at reasonable prices , yet this restaurant was sold , has been in Brownsville over 50 yrs ! Some recipes have changes , their enchilada plate is signature, four cheese , classic Vermillion Chile con carne onions pieces in the side and juicy jalapeños! They brought enchiladas , with rice and beans a few chips , a totally different plate called the Pancho Villa , refried beans and rice , these enchiladas didnt have their signature chili con carne plate ! I returned my plate and was then served what I ordered, a cheese burger plate for my guest , totaled about $ 33.00 , still the Vermillion is the best, serving the Brownsville public for over 50 yrs ! Additional bar area for other diners , hope that helps !
Went to have dinner as we there we were put on a waiting list to be seated, we ask if we can sit in the bar since there was a booth and two tables were told that there save for a party of ten people, when the booth is one corner and two tables were in the middle. An there was no reservation sign on any of the three tables. Poor customer service and communication with the staff.
We had dinner at this restaurant the first week of December 2020. We went to this restaurant because it was rated as the best restaurant in Brownsville Texas....... it is Not! Our $45 meal consisted of a chili, that was touted to be homemade, but, I truly believe it was out of a can and if you are wanting salsa to go along with your expensive meal, it is a problem here, you receive little tiny cups of salsa, which seems weird when you are trying to eat chips and salsa and a Mexican dish. The cheeses that were used in the dishes seem to be a cheap type because they hardly had any flavor. I would never recommend this place to anyone. Two positives are that they do take your temperature before you go in and the waitress was super nice.
Very keto friendly with food options and really nice employees. The zucchini melt is to die for! And they have beer on draft!!! Were from McAllen and this is our new favorite Brownsville spot! The portion was pretty big. I could not finish everything. The service is super friendly and I highly recommend this place.
Great and awsome place. I remember growing up. My dad taking me there no dine in, was like the drive in theater. Eat in car. In my dads 2 door 1960 chevy impala. Wow long time ago.. Something about the enchiladas. Not the same. Thats the only reason i go there. I will ask what happened to the enchiladas. And I ment not the same as when I just stand up in the back seat and my dad will drive imagine that.
This place was great had fish tacos friendly people coming in the door we were greeted and then we were seated The Waitresses friendly great my son had a burger kids meal it was huge for a three year old great staff I must see peanut oil free. We had fajita nachos and enchiladas, burgers and onion rings. The beer was cold and the food was AMAZING! The nachos are good every time and the onion rings are so big! Service was great and the restaurant was clean. We love it and will be back.
We didnt want to miss a visit to this popular spot during our visit to the area and werent disappointed. The cheese enchilada dinner was one of the best Ive ever had and my companions chicken fried steak was her first-ever experience with this dish. She enjoyed it, especially the side of fried onion rings which were outstanding. Very friendly staff helped to make our meal a treat.
The food was ok but the service wasnt that great. I had to get the guy picking up dishes and another waitress to bring drinks because the guy waiting on is was too busy talking and playing on his phone. Im also not exactly sure what I paid for because they didnt give a recipt even though I asked for one. It wasnt worth what it cost due to poor service.
Had a better review because I liked the nachos that they serve but my wife and I stopped by and not even got passed the door. The punk little kid at the front lobby made us decide that we will be taking our business elsewhere. Had a great steak at Chedders and my enjoyed the salmon. Hopefully Galaxy bowling opens up soon to enjoy nachos there.
The staff was very attentive & friendly! They had a great menu selection, especially for the kiddos as well, which is always nice. We went during the busy afternoon rush on a Sunday & although the kids got a little impatient, it was SO WORTH THE WAIT!! I had a hard time deciding, should I order one of thier delicious looking burgers or some tacos? Lol, I went on the recommendation from a very nice waitress to try the shrimp tacos. Oh man, they were delicious!! Be sure to give this place a try!
Hadnt been to Vermillion since covid-19 started. My family went yesterday, ordered a small ceviche, 2 cheeseburgers and deluxe nachos. .....$70 bucks! Food was blah at best not worth the price!! Service was not great and thats considering that it waa just our table and 2 people at the bar. Waitress was too focused on HER lunch plate!
The food at this restaurant has its unique flare that has made this place one of Brownsvilles long lasting and favorite restaurants. It would be best to call ahead of time to ensure the establishment has not reserved its seats and to check for availability of seating. The ambient is nice and calm with a waitstaff that is courteous and knowledgeable of their menu.
Excellent lunch and service. My husband liked the Pancho Villa he ordered and my fajita surf and turf was excellent. I particularly liked the beans a la charra .The server was excellent and friendly. He gave us a sample of their famous ceviche because he said it was very popular. It was good, but I am sure an acquired taste, so not for us.The place was very busy at 1:30pm on a cold, rainy Thursday, we waited maybe 5 minutes for a table.Definitely recommend this place. We are holidaying in SPI which only seems to have fried food or burgers. Definitely worth the drive to Brownsville.
This place has a great atmosphere; quiet and perfect lighting. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. We were very surprised to discover that chips and salsa were not delivered, then we found out you have to order them as an appetizer from the menu. Obviously not very pleased with that, since that breaks from the norm for places like this. The food was very tasty and well-proportioned and wed probably go again if in the area.
Food was good. Ordered the fried fish with fries and mashed potatoes. Strangely, it came with a slice of orange??? The place brags about being there since 19something but the smell certainly brags about it louder. Good food if you dont mind the weird smell of the restaurant.
We have had meals here many times over the last 5 years after Vermillion was referred by a well respected local. We have never had a bad experience. The fajita enchiladas are incredible. Try the fajita nachos as an appetizer with a top shelf margarita or michalada. You wont regret it ! 5 STARS !
For my first time here it was pleasant, waiters were friendly and courteous. Was told they specialize in fajita nachos but when we were served the nachos hardly had any meat on the. more cheese than meat but otherwise, they were ok!!!! Oh!! The ice tea (sweet) tastes more like sugar water than ice tea!!!! ☺
Vermillion, without a doubt, has won first place in my ranking of Mexican food. Everything Ive had from here has been flavored so well and cooked to perfection. It does get busy, but is so worth the wait! The staff has always been kind and attentive. I live almost nine hours up north, but my family and I cant come to Brownsville without coming to Vermillion. I only wish I could eat here more often!
Thus is not your average bar. It is very clean, the staff are helpful and friendly and the food is excellent. Decorated for Mardi Gras, both the restaurant and bar were beautifully festive. I had the fried fish tacos and they were delicious. The guacamole was the best I have ever eaten. It was so fresh.I will definitely be coming back.
I would rate zero stars very bad customer service, I was put on hold several times before they took my order and after they took my order I was put on hold again!! Just to be told that they couldnt make my order!!! 30 minute wait for nothing never going back! Beware their service has dropped. Disappointed
I have been a customer of the Vermillion for years and the food is always fantastic! Their beer is cold, servers very friendly, great atmosphere, and always wonderful food! Their nachos are some of the best in Brownsville, and all of their Mexican food is outstanding. If youre looking for something lighter, theyve got you covered with great options including shrimp cocktail, ceviche, lettuce wraps, zucchini melt, fajita fiesta salad, chicken sandwiches and more! My favorites are the nachos, enchiladas, entomatadas, and fajita ranchera!
The food was alot better than I expected it to be. We went when it was pretty dead though so the awkward silences made it a little uncomfortable. Felt as though people might eavesdrop. The food was amazing though. That salsa was smokin hot!!!! Youve been warned! Its a shame the one in harlingen didnt last, gonna have to take a trip to Brownsville everytime I want a burger from yall 😬😬😬😬😭
I called to ask for info and lady that answers phone is very rude. She didnt even let me talk and hanged up on me both times I called. Guess Ill go somewhere else to eat... some folks have no business working in food service!!! And the fajitas taste like broiled not grilled.
Omg!!! This is a FABULOUS restaurant and ONE OF A KIND!!! This is one of Vermillions most requested dishes and super delicious.....Fajita Nachos Deluxe ( crispy homemade tortilla chips, homemade beans, thick melty cheddar cheese, juicy fajita chunks and jalapenos) Guacamole added 👍Such a wonderful Birthday meal for me!!! And our waiter provided great service!
This place is always jam packed with people thatll even wait over an hour to be seated. To be completely honest, I dont understand why. Yes, the staff is ready to tend to you and make you feel welcome but the food leaves a whole lot to be desired. My wife and I went to Vermillion last night because we were able to finally find a babysitter and have a night to our selves and we were totally disappointed. About the food, enchiladas our pride and joy (it says it on the menu) are covered with what appears to be canned chili sauce which isnt authentic Mexican at all. The fajitas were very soft but bland at best. The plate was overloaded with refried beans and rice which pretty much all remained on my plate at the end of my meal. I ordered a flour tortilla but damn it was closer to a piece of crunchy cardboard. The last thing that left us with a bitter taste as we walked out was the bill. Paid about 50 dollars for a 25 dollar meal on a good day. I really want to like Vermillion, but it seams that every time we give it a chance we end up going home with a feeling of disappointment. Itll be a good while before we even consider trying it again if ever.
I have being there for a long time, but then we stop going cuz a friend passed his favorite place and then my fiance passed too! But love the employees the old ones but theres a lot of new ones now. We were always there on Friday and Saturday. I just went a few days ago and felt kind of defferent. But love it. Ill be back again when I feel better.
The place boasts of friendly service, but they were polite at best. The music is at a volume that makes me wonder if a college crowd will be coming 8n soon, but Im not hanging around to find out. The fish Vercruz tasted like celery soup with a hint of vegetable broth. If you want to taste fish get something else. The tea is also weak. The refried beans is more like bean paste. The chips and rice are okay.
My favorite place in Brownsville a must if you are visiting. If you are local and have not eaten here..... need to get it fixed burgers are the best. Nachos in any presentation a must. Servers are proud of the place and food. Ceviche is one of the top 3 in town. Of course cold beer.
The food was great, and service was excellent, the guy was on the ball. I had never eaten here before it was my first time, I had never thought I could fall in love with beans, they make the best beans in the RGV. But they need to work on giving customers some elbow room in the bar area I felt like the waiter had to shimmy across the tables, I felt like a tuna in a can. You would think a restaurant with a lot of residual income on their investment could upgrade their facility a little, I know what they are trying to do with their decor but it looks like it hasnt been kept up.
So my wife and I go every here and now and the service is great the food is great.... I also do door dash, I just picked up an order for vermillion at 12 for to plates and the cashier lady that was there is so freaking rude! The short lady that was there is so nice, f that chick love everyone else though
“Fantastic Tex Mex”Tex Mex food does not get any better!!! Great fajitas, nachos, guacamole or chicken fried steak. The beer is varied and cold. The decoration is casual. Two environments: one more casual family style, the other more sports bar with Multiple TVs. A place you will want to revisit.
Came in from out of town and saw this was the place to go for grub and a beer, turns out they are not the hospitable people all the reviews say they are. Tried to order a beer and they would not accept my vertical Texas ID, even though it clearly states my DOB and it is valid. This wouldnt have been too big of a deal accept the manager decided to argue and tells us BS stories about how the TABC sent a guy in with vertical ID that said he was 35, it turned out that it wasnt his real id, but he was of age.. Like what? How does this story make sense? And what does this have to do with me? She wouldnt stop trying to prove how she was in the right for denying my ID. SHE WOULD NOT STOP. I finally said, Can I just order some food now? And she walked away... Please dont go here, went down the street to Don Chucho instead and it was killer, nice people and absolutely slammin food.
This was supposed to be the best place in town, but it was far from it. This is the first mexican restaurant that I have been to that makes you pay for the chips and dip. It is also the first that doesnt have green dip, but it has Asian hot sauce and Louisiana hot sauce. The food was extremely greasy. The service was ok. The waiter came back often asking if we needed refills. Its just sad that the best thing on my plate was the rice because it wasnt greasy. Even the refried beans tasted greasy. With a fajita plate, I expected more than one tortilla, and at least one of either sour cream or guacamole, but got none of that. It wasnt worth the trip.
I cant believe this is just a neighborhood restaurant. Above all the service matches the quality of the food. And that salsa is primo. Being from NW Louisiana and 6 years in Dallas, I am what I call a Tex-Mex type of guy. This place has more of a Mex-Tex brand of food. The menu may look the same as a Mercardo Juarez or a Jalapeno Tree, but it is different by every extreme of the word. Where up north, they add heat to each bite, here it is replaced with the flavor of the heat, just not the heat. I was worried that my mom would have issue with this on the way down, but here and other places around here have figured out this part to the T.Would stop here anytime I go thru town just wish I didnt have to drive 12 hours just to make it to town.Salsa - Straight off the stove. Not store bought.Lunch specials - Very accommodating in proportion and $.Appetizers - This is how I found the salsa. Glad I did.
When we visited this place 3 years ago, it was great. Now, it seems that they dont care too much about service. Our waitress wasnt attentive, friendly, and we had to keep asking if theyd refill our drinks. Everything seemed rushed and all they seemed to care about was the quick turnover. They completely missed the point about having a happy and returning customer. Charro beans were tasteless, and the fish tacos were okay. Sadly, we will not be returning.
Amazing food, nice trendy place, a gem of Brownsville this restaurant stands out from other local restaurants and deserves praise, the servers are very friendly and the decor is very nice. They have specials and other good stuff, definitely would recommend it. Try the nachos!

2022-01-04I’ve been coming here for years. Every time I stop by this restaurant, I always order their specialty fajita panchos. They have the best fajita panchos in town. Great custom services! He brought us a small bowl of soup which was super delicious! We were very pleased with our server (Eddie)!

2022-05-01This local restaurant is a local favorite and is becoming a historic location.Great service and excellent food. The enchiladas are the best in Brownsviile. For beer drinkers- they serve Shiner Bock on tap. Unfortunately, they do not have a happy hour. Note: Try the fish Veracruzana plate.

2021-12-24Been coming here since 1977. My fave has always been the shrimp plate... simply outstanding. I had mine with an ice cold Dos XX from the draft. As a bonus, the have a Touch Tunes Juke box...just download the app, procure the credits and play your fave music. This place is a true Brownsville original!

2022-03-09Excellent experience! Drop by if youre in town. The fried pickles were so tasty and not at all greasy with a breadcrumb batter. Extensive menu to choose from. The fajita steak was tender and tasty. Nachos were fresh and plentiful. Service was friendly and efficient. We would return here whenever we are in town! Too bad we were too full for dessert!

2022-02-11$3 for a freaking cup of instant decaf coffee!!! Are you freaking kidding me. The environment was a little bit noisy the food was just okay but for a salad, cup of instant coffee, and a 15% tip it was twenty bucks. I will not be going back!

2022-03-01The menu is diverse (many tasty appetizers, plus burgers, sandwiches, seafood, kids plates and a variety of delicious Mexican dishes, including ceviches). The portions are very generous (we had to cancel one of our entrees because the two appetizers we ordered could have been meals in themselves). Prep time is PDQ, and the service is very good (our waiter Mike was outstanding). Also, the prices are very reasonable ($7 to $16 for most anything). No cocktails apparently, but a great selection of lager beers, 5 or 6 popular wine types, and sodas, tea, coffee, etc.

2022-07-24Known for their fajita pancho deluxe plate, which is delicious and consists of tortilla chips, beans, melted cheese, and fajita! I order mine with a side of guacamole. I love ordering coke zeros here, they are always extra carbonated. Excellent michelada on my latest visit 😋😋😋
