Went there the weekend before record store day looking for a Woodkid album. Im pretty good about finding records but always forget about the storage underneath the main shelves and the person at the front quickly and happily helped us find the record on a busy, crowded day.
Always a great experience! The staff is friendly and never gets in the way despite the lack of space sometimes. (Cant help that, I wont dock a star for it. The price you pay for popularity.)For a downtown Austin shop, the prices arent too bad. For example, youll typically have to pay a bit more for new items you can get somewhere else. It makes sense- thats profitmaking for you. So, a new steelbook of Tale of Princess Kaguya is 26.99 there, while at WalMart its 21.99. Only a five dollar markup, which is genuinely a great deal.I love the selection and atmosphere, although some of their newer items go quicker than Id hope.
A must for music lovers. This place has vinyl CD’s and even cassettes. The staff is not under the mistaken belief they are Rockstars, although there is a fair amount of musicians that work there . Music of all genres . Used new vinyl etc... ample parking. Great location. Great inshore performances
Okay experience. Would have stayed longer if it wasnt as hot as Satans a*shole in there. I get that its cold outside, but coming in bundled up was unbearable and I totally didnt enjoy staying for longer than 5 minutes. 🥵 Otherwise, seems like a great stop for used movies and vinyl.
Happening upon a large independent record store, with sections dedicated to local music, was a bit like entering a time machine. In the age of Spotify, my girlfriend and I had long forgotten about the experience of standing at an album display, putting on a pair of headphones and pressing play amongst a flock of fellow music lovers, and then heading to the checkout with a new CD in hand. There’s also a wild collection of movies, toys, clothing and merchandise, so it’s a great stop in for gifts and a must see if you find yourself in Austin.
This is a really cool store. Not only is there a first class selection of music there are books, t-shirts, record players and a host of items perfect for the music lover. I also had the pleasure of seeing an acoustic performance from Margo Price while in store. This is a definite 5 stars.
This place is fantastic. Went their on my birthday. There are not enough words to describe Waterloo. Shopping and looking around would take several weeks or more. The staff is so helpful. CDS, movies, albums and players. Posters, novelty items and that is just a few to mention a few. Even found a mood ring. Drove quite a distance just to buy things. Well worth it. The prices are great too.
A nice step back into the 70s when record stores were the place to start your weekend. This store also has lots of local and retro memorabilia. I give four stars because the staff is really all to young to answer any of my hippie music questions. Like: can you point me in the direction of 70s road trip music? That seemed pretty basic to me. I got blank stares from the youngins. Not surprised. Hire some senior folks inside.
I have loved this place for 30 years. I used to buy cassettes here. Bill, Jon, Jesse, and gang are amazing people. The Stooges played here, Nirvana played here, nostalgia galore and quality music knowledge and products through and throughout. Thank you Waterloo for always being there.
I have been a customer and supporter of Waterloo Records in Austin since I moved here 15 years ago. As my kids have grown, they have become big fans of music themselves. Today I decided to take my boys to some record stores to pick out some music they like. We went to Waterloo Records, where we were greeted by a door guard outside of the building. The sole job of this lady was to make sure that people were wearing masks before entering the building. (Note that this is NOT a city, county or state mandate.) Two of my sons and I had our masks on. The other son, who is autistic, non-verbal, and intellectually disabled, was not wearing a mask. I have a physician’s note stating that he is exempt from wearing a mask due to his disabilities. I explained to the “mask guard” that he is autistic and will not wear a mask. Believe it or not, there is an upper level mask requirement liaison that needed to be consulted by the door mask guard to see if we could enter. She said “I have to get approval because I will get fired if anyone enters the store without a mask on.” Seems intense, but okay. We waited several minutes until the head honcho of masks came out. She told me that they have a very strict mask wearing policy and could not allow my son in the store. They denied entry to my disabled child for not wearing a mask, even though he has been exempt by an educated, board certified physician! No temperature check. No test. No reasonable modification as required by the Americans with Disability Act. My momma blood started boiling! I tried to maintain my composure in front of my children but I was not as successful as I was aiming for. I asked her if she was seriously denying entry to the business to my disabled son for not being able to wear a mask. She tried telling me that it was for my son’s health. I informed her how asinine that is considering every person is masked and asked to hand sanitize while simply LOOKING AT VINYL RECORDS!! I assured her that she would be hearing from me again, as I walked to my car with my kids. This is not a mask or vaccine debate. I have never said a word about either. I am a fully vaccinated person that thinks it’s everyone’s choice. I don’t push my agenda on anyone. This is a moral, disability inclusion issue in which a business is allowed to deny entry to a disabled child for not being able to wear a mask. In a city in which ALL races, religions, genders, sexualities and social classes are welcomed and supported, you should absolutely be ashamed of yourself as a business to be so close minded to not allow one 11 year old autistic boy entry into your store. This is not the last you will hear from me, albeit never in your store again.
I went to Waterloo looking for vinyl from a small, independent label I love and support. Not only did they have what I went there to find, they had several other releases I didnt know were even available. I couldnt have been happier with my experience and was thrilled with the prices. Ill definitely be going back.
I was there over the Halloween weekend . Spent over $1,000 ! Yes , I have an addiction to CDs ! Great selection . The only reason the rating isn’t higher is that when I got home to California I found one of the disc boxes was empty ! Yes , I was annoyed . Would I go back ? Well , I have an addiction…
If I could give this place 10 stars, I would. For years, it has been one of my favorite places in Austin. I have literally spent thousands of dollars and hundred of hours within these walls.Huge selections of music, pop culture items, music related books, and movies.Selection varies on older, harder to find items, but, if its a new release, chances are, theyve got it.Support these guys. Its one of the best record stores in the nation.
This is one of those magical places that the locals would brag about. And it does live up to the hype. You are likely to find anything that has to do with the musical medium. Be it vinyl records, used and new, cds, movies, or listening devices such as audiophile headphones, record players, etc. One very minor complaint is the high focus on new inventory, to the point where youre more likely to find a recent pressing of an old vinyl record, than an original pressing. For hipsters and millennials that are just looking for the vinyl experience for the sake of novelty and being retro, this is not a big deal. But for those others of us looking to find an old, original pressing of a 45 year old vinyl, wed most likely be out of luck here. Also, expect, with a high degree of certainty, that therell be young teens just hanging out, sitting on the floor, crowding the aisles. The employees dont really care to say anything to them, so set your annoyance level accordingly.Overall, its a nice place to find some good music.
We totally fell in love upon entry. It took me back to the days of going to the record store as a kid. My daughter asked what a 45 was, I had to chuckle. The selection of music is dynamic! They had everything and everybody! The albums, CDs, videos and accessories along with clothing was just mind blowing.
Ive been going here since 1990. Great staff. Great selection. Pro store for vinyl.I want to give a special shout-out to the kind man at the door today who took and processed my return and gave me store credit so I didnt have to wait in the outside line. (The line was long!) Thats service!! Will be shopping here for years to come.
Alright, Alright, Alright. Where to start.. the music selection in both Vinyl, Cds & Cassettes is impressive. I always end up leaving with something because why the heck not? If youre a music junkie definitely swing by! The selection of old & new, indie to even Japanese is stellar. The staff is always helpful and super chill as well.
My review is a 1 STAR review for the following reason. The pros- top notch selections . Reasonable prices. Some nice rarities and audiophile pressings which I love. Great layout of the store and lots of extras. The con, and its a big one. I made an appointment at the store on 1/26/21 and showed up early. Paid $15 for the honor to shop there. No problem, I was pretty confident that I would leave with some vinyl. As an out of town shopper, which I mentioned, the 30 minute time limit is not enough time to shop in this store. About 25 minutes into my visit with 6 new records in my hand I was informed my time was almost up. I was the ONLY SHOPPER IN THE STORE. Fine I said, but I intent to finish the new records section. At the prompt 30 min mark a different employee informed me it was time to go. I politely informed him I was at the H section (working backwards) and I would make my way as quickly as I could to get done. I was rushed to get done in about 5 minutes. I had over $100 of records in my hand and made a quick run of the store. I WAS THE ONLY SHOPPER IN THE STORE. I realize the employees are just sheep here but how RUDE and stupid is it that I am trying to support a brick and mortar independent record store, have a stack of records in my hand and am being asked to leave. No one else in the store, 4 oclock in the afternoon, no one outside waiting to get in. It is my understanding that this is against the common business of goods for money. Paying the idiots salary that told me to leave. I would have purchased so much more if they had allowed me to. I get what they are trying to accomplish with covid and all but use some common sense for the good of your own economy! EVERY RECORD I PURCHASED COULD HAVE BEEN BOUGHT ON AMAZON WITH FREE SHIPPING.
I absolutely hate this place. Its definitely not cool at all. And staff never bend over backwards to find rare and neat stuff, arent super helpful in selections and good taste, and definitely dont provide awesome customer service. They dont even tell you its not opposite day or sarcasm is still a thing. How rude!
Overall best selection in Austin. They do not have the character as some record stores and the staff is not as knowledgeable in general. But they have the best Jazz selection in town and probably the biggest selection of any genre. Dont expect as many deep-finds though.
Awesome record store! Didn’t have nearly as much time to browse like I wanted, but they had exactly what I needed when no one else did, and cheaper than what I could get online. Staff was helpful and friendly and spent some time happily chatting and joking with customers and co workers alike. The kind of banter that happens when you are happy in what you are doing and want to share that happiness. Truly a great place to be, and a very happy vibe!
Great selection of records and local! My big downside is that I wanted to drop by and grab a record, but theyre closed to the public and by appointment only. (This is not communicated well at all). Appointments can be made up to a week out and are 30 minute slots. This is annoying because my shop would take less than 2 min, but I would effectively block someone out of shopping for the remaining 28 min. Other shops seem to be doing fine with limited entry. I ended up just ordering the record from another store because of this. They have curbside pickup 11-7, but sometimes you just want to explore the music!
It Is A Very Good Store But Some Staff Need To Be Nice To Their Loyal Customers Who Drive In From Laredo , Texas . If A Customer Spends Any Money In The Store , There Is No Need To Yell Or Threaten A Customer Who Travels A Long Distance . Think About It Staff You Are Not Helping Mr. Kunz With His Sales . The Customer Is Always Right .
I new to the world of vinyls, so I dont have much to compare this too. I enjoyed my experience. The employees were very helpful and knowledgeable. I purchased my first turntable and bought a few vinyls as well. They have a very large selection, so I was overwhelmed with what to buy first. They also offer CDs and cassettes. I didnt dive into the $5 used vinyl section, but I will the next time I stop in. Dont forget to bring your punch card to earn I believe $20 towards a vinyl.
Their selection of CDs, records and cassettes is amazing. I have been here several times but yet I always find a section of the store to discover. They are up to date with new and old records. Local bands perform somedays as well. Great place for everyone to visit even just to look around. Friendly but helpful staff.A must stop for all visitors in the Austin area!
This place is great! Do you know how hard it is to find a music CD that you absolutely cant find anywhere else? And they have vinyl! How awesome is that? Nowadays more people are turning to vinyl and going back to the days of a turntable. This is the place to go to get you are records!
Waterloo is a really nice store. You can expect pretty high prices, although if you look around enough and know what youre looking at you can find good deals. The movies usually have pretty good deals especially. The vinyl selection is good, however the vast majority are new prints, meaning youre probably not going to find any special old releases or discounted used vinyls. This can be good and bad, of course, just depends what you want. Again the prices are not going to be low, so dont expect a huge bargainThe employees are nice, but in my experience there is no negotiation or haggling like at other shops.
Awesome place. They had a huge selection of records, CDs and band shirts. They had some great rare Grateful Dead and Cramps records along with a ton of others. One of the best things about this place was that they had a easy parking. If you like vinyl, check this place out. I will definitely be back.
I could happily spend the entire weekend in this shop. If you love music this is the place for you. When we arrived there was a band playing to launch their new album- the well - and they were amazing. Some of the records were priced above market price hence the one star off, but did find tonnes of stuff for a good price. Loved it.
Big store lots of new vinyl, but not a lot of used options. Prices are high, I would recommend you look around for the many other record stores in Austin that are off the beaten path, especially if you want used vinyl! The store seems very cooperate and is trying very hard to cater to the tourist. It is a very clean and pretty nice store.
Recently decided to get into vinyl and I had a million questions. The staff was eager to help, very informative, and went the extra mile. Even with how much more difficult their job must be doing only curbside service (and my phone kept dropping the call) it was still a great experience. They even set me up with a punch card for vinyls, and I wasnt even aware Waterloo had this rewards system.Shoutout to Liam especially for taking the time and researching what the best option would be when I discovered I didnt have the right speaker set up to use my new record player!
They have a great selection of new and used records always. It also doesnt have an elitist air the way many great record stores do.This is an excellent place for record collectors old and new. You wont feel judged for getting the latest pop album or video game soundtrack.Their selection of movies is also outstanding with many foreign titles and Criterions. The only problem is slim parking, so do your best to go off peak hours!
This place is the real deal. Theyve got just about any piece of vinyl you could possibly want. Plus an absolutely amazing selection of old movies including all the cult classics you can imagine. Definitely a staple of the Austin experience and totally worth a check if you enjoy vintage movies, music, and more.
We enjoy visiting Waterloo records. They have a large selection of vinyl but they could definitely do better and stock some lesser known bands like bob moses, flora cash, Frank ocean and syml. Parking spots are very small even for compact cars and the vinyl aisles get very crowded. Overall a cool place to look for music.
This is the Most epic record store in America. In my 20 years in Austin Ive seen. Jimmi Cliff, Iggy Pop, to name a couple, recently 13th floor elevators tribute representing our Father of Austin live music Roky Erickson and in my opinion the Father and King of Psychedelic Rock. These Musical geniuses set the standard for generations. So slip inside this house, it starts like a Rollercoaster so real it take your breath away, add a little reverberation. Waterloo the original name for Austin. We must have the Waterloo sunset to keep our heartbeats a beating, thats why music has a heartbeat too. Peace, love and Waterloo records forever. Dont go away like Sun records
One of the few remaining iconic record stores, this place should be preserved. Records aplenty along with band memorabilia and kitsch, one will find something to get for themselves as well as something to gift someone else. And the service is phenomenal! We bought a record player (open box item) and upon coming home in Houston (3 hours away) discovered that it was missing a part. I called and informed them of the situation, they sent me the part by mail at no cost to me.
What a place. Huge selection, used and new. If you want to spend hours going through bins of discount records looking for gem, theyve got you covered. If youre looking to pick up your favorite modern artist on vinyl or cd, theyve got you covered. If you want recommendations or help finding something, the staff are all over it.I had already found some great stuff on their used vinyl new arrivals rack for cheap, and when I was getting ready to leave, one of the guys stopped me and let me know they were about to bring a bunch more stuff out. Thanks to him I walked out with an armful of gems, and every single one of them at a great price.I could not have been happier with this store. As a bonus, my wife was able to bring her dog inside, and everyone was super sweet about it and gave the dog lots of attention. She might have had even more fun than I did. This place deserves every bit of the great reputation it has.
Very helpful in selling a large quantity of DVDs from a friends estate. I love visiting here and putting my hands on real physical media and seeing a vast selection of music with very knowledgeable staff (well, not so much about classical, but I buy that stuff online directly from the labels). I always feel like a kid in a candy store when I visit this place.
It used to be a great place to go, but the selection and patrons have both gotten younger, newer, and insufferable. As Austin has become increasingly more overcrowded in the past decade and vinyl has become trendy, the place is packed to the brim. The vinyl section is often crowded with hipsters who have dubious tastes searching for $30 records.I used to be one of a few people in the vinyl section and was able to have conversations with the employees about music, imagine that. The employees are now always focused on sales, corporate pushes, and bitchy customers at the register that they have no time to chat about music. This is a record store for crying out loud. Two of my favorite employees who’ve worked here for decades no longer recognize me or are excited about music. We used to have amazing conversations about albums and songs that changed our lives. Some of my favorite records were recommendations by employees here and Cheapo. An employee that still works here recommended one of my favorite records and he now wouldn’t know me from Adam. This person and that album changed my life and now there’s no time to chat because it’s all business now. The passion is gone and that’s incredibly depressing
Im visiting Austin and given the reputation I thought the record stores would be worth checking out. You wont be disappointed. The store is small, but they have some QUALITY!! Im into metal and they a really nice selection to choose from. Too nice. I spent too much. And they had some artists that Ive never seen records for in stores- like Rammstein. Theres also a ton of CDs which surprised me a lot. The staff was really nice and chill as well. A pretty awesome little place and Ill have to stop by next time Im in town!
Nice selection of vinyl.Edit: I got into Saxon Sound System. This is a reggae and rap influenced group of several musicians from the 70s and 80s that is pretty obscure to most people.I asked if they had anything after looking a while expecting that empty retail expression that you get when you ask an underpaid worker something he neither knows or care about.Instead imediately guy says we put that in reggae dancehall. Some people call it that. Most of what I wanted and a lot of what I search for online was right there. I was so greatful the salesperson seemed a little embarrassed. This place is amazing. Every experience I have had there since has been pretty much the same.I am writing this now awhile after this happened because places are closing because of the pandemic. I dont even know the current store hours, but I hope their okay ( along with there amazing sales staff ) I hope we dont lose places like this. The are not easily replicated.
Waterloo Records is one of the best record stores in the country. I have been going there since 1987, and they always have either what I am looking for, and/or at least a hundred other things I want. They are a one-stop source for new and used CDs, records and tapes; popular, rare and cult films on DVD and Blu-ray; and lots of other fun items such as t-shirts, buttons, patches, and collectibles. They host regular in-store appearances of bands, too! All that AND an incredibly knowledgeable and friendly staff means Waterloo is a must-visit!
They dont carry anything and if they do they cant find it.They literally cannot find their own inventory.I cant tell you how many countless times Ive been in there, they tell me they have something in stock, go out on the floor and come back empty-handed.they have no idea where their inventory is.Incredibly frustrating
An Austin icon! You must visit this store if you are a music lover. HUGE selection of vinyl. Great selection of CDs and DVDs and Blu-rays too. They also have some super cool t-shirts and other collectibles as well. Lots and lots of cool stuff just to look at and buy. I could spend hours here!
My favorite record store in Austin. They have a large selection in the Rock/Pop genre and possibly the biggest Metal selection in Austin as well. They also have Punk and Garage/Psych sections, which I dont always see in stores. In addition to vinyl records they carry a large selection of CDs and BluRays. Im particularly a fan of their big criterion collection selection.
An absolute staple to the Austin community. Weekly free concerts in the store, a GIANT vinyl collection to get lost shopping in, and overall great vibe. If youre aimlessly walking in and youre not sure what to buy for new music - ask the people who work there, their taste is impeccable.
Waterloo Records is one of those unique Austin icons. I love their never ending variety of music and videos. I love their frequent e-mail newsletters updating me on upcoming releases. I love their free in-store live performances of great bands. I love their in-store listening parties with free pizza provided by Austins Pizza. I love their knowledgeable and helpful staff. I love their autograph signing tents at music festivals. I love their small limited parking lot and am surprised that I can still find a spot. I love their love for Bob Schneider and Willie Nelson.
Only second time here ever, much better as an adult. Many records and for the most part easy to find what you want. My favorite part really is the weekly rack. They label one section for days of the week, to show when stuff has come in and how long its been. Found a Dave Brubeck album I had been looking for. Also near the check out are the cheaper records where my wife found a record she has really been enjoying for 99 cents. They do have record player so you can listen to potential buys, and the gentleman who checked us out was very friendly and kind!Only downside is, but as most people who buy records are aware of, some vinyls no matter where you go can be pricey.
My son and I visit Austin at least 3 times a year. Never once have we not gone in to Waterloo. We make our list of hard to find items and they always fulfill our needs everytime we visit. Nice to be able to buy in person as so many music stores have closed and most folks are forced to online buy. I hope to see them open for many more years to come.
What a fun and quirky little record shop that is totally representative of Austin! They have an amazing selection of not only CDs but vinyls as well (I have found some pretty cool rare and vintage vinyls here) and they even carry books and other music memorabilia. The staff here can be very hit of miss...they can be extremely helpful and passionate about making recommendations or finding whatever you are looking for or they can be very disenfranchised youth who cant be bothered because they are just that cool. But, as far as the store goes, I honestly love to just come and browse through selections old and new and peruse the funny odd ball merch sections. For local or tourist alike, this is a great record shop to check out in downtown Austin!
PHENOMENAL SELECTION! This store has almost everything you can think of in any format necessary. They create a great atmosphere, the staff is friendly, and that area of the city is lovely. Their shows during SXSW are always the best and most fun to attend. I always make sure to come here on a visit to Austin.
This place is the best if your a record collector. Most likely they will have what you are looking for, if they dont, they will order it for you, and have it next time your in the store. They carry all things music. Turntables needles, cds, all music related items. Knowledgeable staff, that can refer you to music similar to your tastes, and the place even has live music on certain days. I try to stop in once a week, if I have a chance.
This is a great music and movie store. One of my favorite things about this store is that they hold various in store events from listening parties to autograph signings to in store performances. They even have sales for when UT wins depending on how much the win by, which I think is a cool idea. They have a very diverse music collection in the store which all music lovers can appreciate. The only thing is that their prices are a little too high for new CDs and movies. Some of the Criterion Collection films are pretty expensive for some of them being used. But they do have good deals here and there. You just have to search for them like low prices on new arrival CDs and Movies as well as a bin with clearance items. This place is definitely one the heart arteries of the music city.
An amazing place with a lot of records (new and used ones), record players and other music related stuff. The crew is really kind and with the best intention to help. Definitively is a must for any music lover on their trip to Austin. Congratulations for such a cool place!
Ive been shopping at Waterloo for about a year now and it has always been my number one choice for buying music. Great selection of vinyl and all the related accessories, and fantastic prices. I had an experience there today that made me want to finally sit down and write a review of this wonder Austin mainstay. The folks there have always been friendly and helpful, but today Michael went above and beyond. He is probably the kindest person Ive encountered as a customer--just one of those people that the world needs more of. Our brief interaction touched me so deeply that I could feel tears welling up as I drove home. Waterloo has always been my favorite place to shop for music, but now I dont think Ill shop anywhere else as long as I live in Austin.
The absolute BEST record store in the world. No, I am not biased or anything, but my enthusiasm for this place is overwhelming. Best record selection, best in-store performances, best free Shiner keg beer, best employees and management. I mean, come on and show me another record store like that. Waterloo even has an excellent website.

2022-04-03One of the coolest stores in ATX, a wonderful place for all the music lovers. They have a good collection of vinyls, record players, CDs, and more. Limited free parking available in front of the store.

2022-07-18Waterloo Records is a welcoming and busy record store. They have a very very wide selection, which I always love to see. Had lots of my favorite artists with new and old albums featured. Although they have a $9.99 and under section, most of the records are priced standardly- which can be expensive for some people. Pretty nice record store.

2021-12-23Cool spot for new/vintage records, cds, movies and toys. Didnt have exactly what I was looking for but still worth checking the place out for the first time. Friendly staff. Masks required and hand sanitizer available through out.

2022-08-12Music is alive and well at Waterloo records. Staff is knowledgeable and pleasant. Their selection is immense and they pay fair prices for used media. You could easily make this a date spot with the Whole Foods across the way serving fresh food just minutes from the doors of the store. Parking a little limited.

2022-07-10This store has so much more than records and video. I plan on doing most of my Christmas shopping there this year.. So much music, everything you could be looking for- and you will surely find music you didnt expect to find as well.. Love this store.

2022-04-23If you enjoy digging through crates this isnt the shop for you. The entirety of the stock is new records. Felt more like a Walmart to me than a record store. If thats what youre looking for then by all means this may be the shop for you, but it was definitely a bummer for me

2022-06-15Cool store to lose yourself looking for THAT record you’re looking for. Found a Tom Petty used vinyl. Not so easy to find this stuff in Italy. Staff was very nice

2021-04-26A large and amazing selection of vinyl. And reasonably priced too! Definitely one of my favorite record stores Ive ever visited.
